Modernization drive in the fisheries sector paradoxically has become marginalization drive for the traditional fishers in Kerala. Poverty and income inequality are two mammoth challenges that affect the fish economy of Kerala owing to resource depletion and unsustainable fishing practices. Poverty alleviation and inclusive development strategies hence have become driving forces to protect the livelihood of the traditional fishers both through institutional nesting and fishers activated strategies through SHGs and cooperatives. The study uses 900 samples based on multi-stage stratified random sampling method from 12 fishing villages of Kerala. The article uses mainly FGT and logistic regression to analyse poverty so to work out the relative poverty between groups and factors determining poverty. Poverty analysis highlights gender wise and activity wise differences in poverty levels, both in the case of severity and depth. An inquiry into the factors determining the non poor shows that gender, number of earners in the households, total members of the households, lost work days due to ill-health and SL! are major determinants of whether an individual is of the threshold of poverty or not.
