El rol del nexo agua-energía en la transición a ciudades inteligentes: revisión bibliográfica | The role of water-energy nexus in the transition to smart cities

La rápida urbanización está ocurriendo simultáneamente con el cambio climático. Ambos desafíos han llevado a académicos, responsables políticos y profesionales a reclamar nuevos paradigmas de planificación y gestión urbana, incluyendo conceptos como el de ciudades inteligentes y nexo agua-energía, que contribuyen a mejorar la seguridad y eficiencia de la gestión de los recursos, logrando una mejora en la eficiencia global del sistema y un avance en cuanto a los ODS. El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue determinar mediante una revisión bibliográfica sistemática el estado actual del conocimiento y el debate académico respecto al nexo agua-energía en la transición a ciudades inteligentes. Los resultados muestran que, si bien son pocos los trabajos que actualmente discuten en forma profunda las interrelaciones entre ambos conceptos y generan propuestas y discusiones respecto a la necesidad de su estudio en conjunto; la evolución del tema en los últimos años ha incrementado tanto en número de trabajos como también en la forma de abordarlos y por lo tanto, es posible que la investigación siga en aumento debido a la necesidad de resolver los problemas urbanos desde un enfoque inteligente e integral, en el cual el nexo juega un papel fundamental.

A rapid urbanization is happening simultaneously with climate change, both unprecedented challenges have led scholars, political actors and professionals to claim for new paradigms of urban planning and management, including concepts such as smart cities and water-energy nexus, which contribute to improve the security and efficiency of the management of resources, achieving an improvement in the overall efficiency of the system and improving the penetration of renewable energies, which enables the achievement of the SDGs. The main objective of this work was to determine through a systematic bibliographic review the current state of knowledge on the water-energy nexus in the transition to smart cities. The results show that, although there are few works that currently discuss in depth the interrelations between both concepts and generate proposals and discussions regarding the need to study them together; the evolution of the topic in recent years has increased both in number of works and in the way they are approached, and therefore, it is possible that research will continue to increase due to the need to solve urban problems from an intelligent and comprehensive approach, in which the nexus plays a fundamental role.
