Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]Rapiers are objects that transcend the common conception of a specialized weapon, more or less well adapted to a niche, to stand as a whole category in themselves. Carefully engineered, technologically complex and difficult to master, rapiers are not only elaborate tools but strong symbols, the personal guardians, for centuries, of life, status, fortune and honour across the many faces of Europe and its areas of influence. Here we will address their where, their when, there how and, above all, their why, starting at the 15th c. all the way to the end of the 17th, approaching both the materiality of their different elements as well as the abstract aspects of the techniques involved in their proper use, to better understand the role these weapons were expected to fulfil in an intricate social contex.
