MicroMundo@Sevilla: ¿resistiremos a la próxima pandemia?

Conceptualmente originado en la Universidad de Yale, el proyecto MicroMundo se importó y se adaptó a la idiosincrasia de España en el año 2016, extendiéndose rápidamente por varias Universidades de la península ibérica. El nodo MicroMundo@Sevilla comenzó su andadura en el año 2017 con un triple objetivo social: i) concienciar a los jóvenes sobre el uso racional de antibióticos; ii) fomentar la investigación hacia el descubrimiento de nuevos antimicrobianos; y iii) incentivar la vocación científica de los estudiantes jóvenes. Desde su creación, esta iniciativa a nivel de la provincia de Sevilla ha ido ampliándose en cada edición hasta la irrupción de la pandemia de COVID-19, interrumpiéndose su realización durante 1 año. Posteriormente, el proyecto ha ido progresando de nuevo hasta alcanzar e incluso superar en el curso 2022/2023 los niveles de repercusión prepandémicos. En esta edición la actividad se ha realizado en 11 centros educativos pertenecientes a Sevilla capital y provincia, llegando a 455 alumnos preuniversitarios e implicando a 35 profesores e investigadores y 15 estudiantes de la Universidad de Sevilla. Los alumnos preuniversitarios han participado en cinco sesiones realizadas en sus propios centros de enseñanza en las que, supervisados por el equipo docente de la Universidad, han determinado la capacidad antibiótica de varias cepas aisladas por ellos mismos a partir de muestras de suelo de su elección. Como resultado se obtuvieron 200 cepas inhibidoras del crecimiento de bacterias de los géneros Bacillus (92 aislados) y Klebsiella (108 aislados) y que podrían tener utilidad en el descubrimiento de nuevos antimicrobianos. Además de este valioso material biológico, el proyecto MicroMundo@Sevilla ha permitido a los estudiantes participantes tomar consciencia de la posible pandemia que nos acecha debido a las resistencias y escasez de antibióticos. Iniciativas como la aquí presentada pueden ayudar a evitar esta amenaza.

Conceptually originated at Yale University, the MicroMundo project was imported and adapted to the Spanish peculiarity in 2016, quickly spreading to various Universities in the Iberian Peninsula. The MicroMundo@Sevilla node began its journey in 2017 with three social objectives: i) to raise awareness among young people about the rational use of antibiotics; ii) to promote research towards the discovery of new antimicrobials; and iii) to encourage the scientific vocation of young students. Since its creation, this initiative encompassing the province of Sevilla has been expanding in each edition until the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, being interrupted for 1 year. Subsequently, the project has resumed until reaching and even exceeding the pre-pandemic impact levels in the 2022/2023 academic year. In this edition, the activity has been conducted in 11 educational centers belonging to Sevilla city and province, reaching 455 pre-university students, and involving 35 professors and researchers and 15 undergraduate students from the University of Sevilla. The pre-university students have participated in five sessions carried out in their own educational centers in which, supervised by the University teaching team, they have determined the antibiotic capacity of various strains isolated by themselves from soil samples of their choice. As a result, 200 strains that inhibit the growth of bacteria of the genera Bacillus (92 isolates) and Klebsiella (108 isolates) were obtained, and they might be useful in the discovery of new antimicrobials. In addition to this valuable biological material, the MicroMundo@Sevilla project has allowed participating students to become aware of the potential pandemic lurking us due to resistance and shortage of antibiotics. Initiatives like the one presented here can help to avoid this threat.
