Badania nad rozwojem konia. Część I „Döle”

Inglés. Observations on the growth and development of Döle horses were carried out in the Nowa Wioska stud. 48 horses born in 1951 and 1953 were measured and weighed periodically. It was found that, under Polish conditions, the Döle horses develop rather slowly, reaching maturity only at the age of 4–5 years and showing sometimes considerable growth as late as during the sixth year. The sucling foals grew very quickly; a period of fairly good daily gains followed up to the age about 16 months. Thereafter, the growth rate diminished. The horses under study became longer and bonier with age; the difference between height of rump and height at withers also decreased. The most unsuitable age for selection among the Döle horses was found to be the second year of their life. At this age, they seemed to be short-bodied, narrow-chested, high set with dump much higher than withers, but this should be considered as a transient stage. However, an excessive body length was sometimes visible at this age and this defect, unfortunately, did not disappear, and even increased with age. The late maturity of Döle horses is undoubtedly a disadvantage, as it delays their use for work. Breeding and management practiced should be aimed therefore at enhancing an earlier maturity of these horses.
