On the 12-November of 2012 world scientific community of genetics, plant breeders will celebrate the 125-th birthday of N.I. Vavilov, the first scholar of the day.

Cucumber is the one of the leading vegetable crops grown in the open and protected ground of the Russian Federation. However, in recent years the production area of this crop decreased because of a number of reasons, one of which is the loss of cucumber crops from diseases. The most economical and environmentally safe method of cucumber protection from diseases is the development and utilization of resistant varieties. By selection on artificial and natural infective zones in VNIISSOK a new variety of cucumber Vodopad and parthenocarpic hybrid F1 Krasotka have been developed.

The studies found that in the crosses of S. melongena with wild species, used as a male and female component, the interspecific hybrids have the traits of the generative organs of wild species: the shape and flower size, color, shape and fruit size.

Dr. Pivovarov V.F. is the leading scientist in the field of ecology, introduction, horticulture, breeding and seed production of vegetable crops. Dr. Pivovarov V.F. is well-experienced in the field of solution of theoretical and practical problems. V.F. Pivovarov has founded the scientific school of the ecological breeding of vegetables with the complex resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

November 25, 2012 the international scientific community of geneticists and plant breeders will be celebrating the 125thanniversary of the birth of botanist and genetics, agronomist, geographer and founder of the national school of biology and breeding, Academician Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov. A III-rd International Scientific-Practical Conference «Modern trends in plant breeding and seed production of vegetable crops. Traditions and Prospects» took place in VNIISSOK in August 2012, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the scientist.

Sakhalin island is one of the regions of Russia with extreme climatic conditions. The first scientist in the field of biology, agriculture, and agro-ecology of Sakhalin region was Zimina Tatiana Alekseevna, Doctor of agricultural science. On the 26th November of 2011 the scientific community of genetics and plant breeders celebrated the 90-th birthday of Zimina T.A. The stuff of VNIISSOK cherish the memory of her as one of the talented scientist and devotee citizen.

The conveyor of production of canning green pea varieties of VNIISSOK breeding is represented.

On May 21 - 24, 2012 the 6th International Symposium on Edible Alliaceae was held at Japan (Fukuoka). The symposium was devoted to innovation in agriculture and food science for edible Alliaceae crops. The symposium provided a leading opportunity for scientists, growers and market players from around the world to discuss and share information on genetics and breeding, cultivation, quality control and so on in bulb onion, garlic, and bunching onion.

After many years of breeding work in the laboratory of plant breeding and seed production of floral crops of VNIISSOK five varieties of bearded iris (Hybrid) have been developed: St. George, Breeze, Zhirafik, Maestro, Elegy, with the original color of flowers that are resistant to adverse weather conditions (rain, hail, etc. etc.), as well as to diseases and pests, heat and winter resistance.
