BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is believed to be one of the major causes of tissue damage in aquatic animals exposed to heavy metals. It leads to certain changes in the antioxidant and enzyme system. Given the fact that research on the effect of sub-acute toxicity of silver nitrate in shrimps is not very developed, the present study can be conducive to formulating the international standards of contamination of shrimps with silver nitrate.OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the toxic effects of silver nitrate on the changes in the antioxidant and enzyme systems of hepatopancreas, muscle and gills of Litopenaeus vannamei.METHODS: After acclimatization of shrimps, they were exposed to silver nitrate with concentrations of 0.0084, 0.021, 0.042 and 0.063 mg/L for 21 days. At the end of the experimental period, gill, muscle and hepatopancreas were sampled, and the changes in the antioxidant system (SOD, GPx and GST) and metabolic enzymes (ALT, ALP, AST and LDH) were examined.RESULTS: There was no significant difference in terms of SOD and GST activity in the gill and muscle of the exposed shrimps (P>0.05). However, GPx in treatment 4 increased significantly in gill and muscle while it saw a decrease in hepatopancreas (P<0.05). In hepatopancreas, GST significantly increased in treatments 3 and 4 (P<0.05) whereas SOD did not show any significant changes compared with other treatments (P>0.05). The metabolic enzymes of the muscle did not show any significant differences in any of the treatments (P>0.05), but in gill, the level of ALT in treatment 4 decreased significantly while the levels of AST and LDH in treatment 3 and 4 significantly increased (P<0.05). In hepatopancreas, the activity of ALT in treatments 2 and 4, AST in treatments 3 and 4, and ALP in all treatment except treatment 1 saw significant reduction. Nevertheless, LDH in treatments 3 and 4 had a significant rise (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: A significant increase in GST and LDH as well as a significant decrease in GPx and ALT, AST and ALP enzymes in the hepatopancreas revealed that the antioxidant and enzyme system of shrimps is further disturbed with the rise in silver nitrate concentration in the hepatopancreas compared to the gill and muscle.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin C (vit C) and magnesium L-threonate (MgT) on the learning ability and memory of mice intoxicated with lead acetate.

The scarcity of green during summer months imposes nutritional stress on farm animals. In this study we examined the effect of nutritional stress on various biochemical parameters of rabbits.Control and green deprived groups each of 20, weaned New Zealand White rabbits, of either sex, were randomly placed and observed for two months. Then green was re-introduced in deprived group for again two months. Blood sera harvested at every 15th day and analyzed using RA 50 Chemistry auto analyzer. Significant (p0.05) decrease of alkaline phosphatase (AKP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and increase in gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and serum cholesterol was observed in rabbits green deprived group.

To characterize the roles of C-peptide in vascular homeostatic processes, we examined the genes regulated by C-peptide in LEII mouse lung microvascular endothelial cells. Treatment of the cells with C-peptide increased the expression of c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) mRNA dose-dependently, accompanied by an increase in JNK1 protein content. Prior treatment of the cells with PD98059, an ERK kinase inhibitor or SB203580, a p38MAPK inhibitor, abrogated the C-peptide-elicited JNK1 mRNA expression. These results indicate that C-peptide increases JNK1 protein levels, possibly through ERK- and p38MAPK-dependent activation of JNK gene transcription.

Objective: This research assesses the utilization of sieved olive pulp (SOP) in the diet of growing rabbits through the use of an exogenous enzyme or dry yeast as a pretreatment. Materials and Methods: One hundred sixty-eight male V-Line rabbits aged 5 weeks (weighing 550 ± 25 gm) were randomly divided into seven groups with eight replicates each as follows: the control group was fed a basal diet without supplementation; while the other six groups were fed basal diets containing 20% and 25% of SOP and supplemented with 0.1 gm/kg Econase (E), 0.5 gm/kg dry yeast (Y), and a combination of both. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. Results: The results indicated that supplementation of E, Y, and EY into rabbit diets containing SOP improved live body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and nutrient digestibil¬ity. A higher dressing percentage was observed in the groups fed a 20% and 25% SOP diet sup¬plemented with EY (p &lt; 0.05). The treated groups showed an increase in total protein, albumin, globulin, A/G ratio, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase (p &lt; 0.05), while there was a significant decrease in triglycerides, total cholesterol, and malondi¬aldehyde levels (p &lt; 0.05) compared to the control. Rabbit groups fed an SOP diet supplemented with E, Y, or EY demonstrated higher (p &lt; 0.05) economic efficiency compared to the control. Conclusion: Supplementing the diet of rabbits containing SOP with exogenous enzymes and/or dry yeast enhances the nutritional value of SOP while improving rabbit performance, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant status.
