Survey of trichinosis in breeding and cull swine, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Serum samples obtained from 40,927 swine at various locations in North Carolina between Aug 1, 1987 and July 31, 1988, were tested for antibodies to Trichinella spiralis, using an ELISA based on a larval T spiralis excretory-secretory antigen. In the ELISA, samples were considered to have positive results if the optical density (OD) reading was equal to or 5 times greater than the mean OD value of 4 negative-control sera from trichina-free swine. Of the 40,927 serum samples tested, 154 (0.38%) were positive by ELISA; the rate for breeding swine was 0.35% (105/30,162), and the rate for cull swine was 0.45% (49/10,765). Of the 49 seropositive samples from cull swine, 11 were from out of the state, 22 had no identification, and 16 were known to originate from North Carolina. Seropositivity had a bimodally seasonal distribution, with peaks in March and September. There was no difference between the mean age of seropositive and seronegative swine, but males were at greater risk for seropositivity than were females. Pigs from lots with < 100 sera tested were at increased risk for seropositivity, as were pigs from the central coastal region of North Carolina.

Growth and development of mixed bred Charollais x white-and-black young stock and black-and-white bull-calves since 8-month old age till and 15-month old age were studied in the conditions in the Republic of Belarus. In course of studied there were analyzed linear growth; young stock growth intensity; forage consumption; efficiency of experimental results. On the basis of obtained data there was determined the absolute growth rate of bull-calves at certain growing periods. Research results showed that dramatic changing of technology of management and feeding of mixed bred Charollais x white-and-black young stock bulls after weaning period caused the decrease of daily average live weight gain from 8-month old age till and 15-month old age in comparison with white-and-black cattle on 99 grams or 14%. Analysis of exterior of experimental animals confirmed the priority of mixed bred young cattle over white-and-black herdmates. Analysis of influence of boar genotype by MUC4 gene on viability of progeny was realized in the conditions in the Republic of Belarus, as well as the evaluation of possibilities of association of polymorphic variants of gene with fattening and meaty qualities of obtained from the boars progeny were conducted. In course of studies there was analyzed the polymorphism of MUC4 gene at producer boars of studied breeds. There was revealed high occurring frequency of desirable allele MUC4**c and MUC4**cc genotype in all studied populations. Boars of Belarusian Meaty breed with genotypes MUC4**cc by MUC4 gene authentically (P less than 0,01) exceeded boars with genotype MUC4**cg according to piglet viability indexes at weaning period on 5,6%. For the further evaluation of the potential role of MUC4gene in marker selection there was realized determination of relations between genotypes of studied marker and other economic traits of swine (fattening and meaty traits of boar progeny). There was stated the authentic increasing of fattening and meaty traits of stores obtained from boars with homozygous genotype MUC4**cc in comparison with progeny fathers of which in their genotype had mutant allel MUC4**g. For the forecasting and modeling of genotypes resistant to colibacillosis there was presented a scheme of selection boars and sows of different genotypes by MUC4 gene for the increasing of progeny viability. According to the scheme the preferred selection was MUC4**cc x MUC4**cc. This selection was recommended for the self-replacement and creation of nuclear stock

Investigation of quality and quantity indexes of sperm production of boars of Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc breeds of Danish selection was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. Quality and quantity indexes were analyzed in accordance with ejaculate volume, spermium concentration and activity at different age-specific periods in the comparative aspect. Thorough analysis of quality indexes (ejaculate volume; spermium concentration; spermatozoon motility; sperm quantity) of semen production of studied breeds at different age-specific stages (before 7 months old; 7-10 months; 10-12 months; 12 months and older) was presented. Coefficients of variation of valuation indexes of semen production were stated. Research results showed that the lowest ejaculate volume was typical for boars of Duroc breed, but the quantity of spermium in ejaculate of this breed since 10-month old age was the highest – 92,6 milliard, that made it possible for this breed of boars to take premier place according to the index of spermium quantity in ejaculate. The same index for boars of Landrace and Yorkshire at age of 12 months old and older was 77,5 and 76,3 milliards, respectively. High variability of indexes of evaluation of semen production was due the reason that the research was taking place at the period of formation of productivity over the whole pig stock. Research results proved that indexes of semen production of producer boars of Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc breeds of Danish selection depended on the breed and high variability indexes

Research results showed that in the conditions of correct organization and application of technological methods of livestock breeding and feeding it was possible to achieve high livability rate of sheep and lambs up to 90%. Also it was possible to get a substantial break of infection chain of many sheep diseases (especially those which had a respiratory nature). Research results showed that simultaneous application of convalescent-phase serum against sheep acute respiratory diseases, as well as Nitox 200 and Invamek for treatment of sheep and especially 2-3 month old lambs with respiratory infectious diseases promoted the recovery of 80-100% of animals.

The analysis of data on a complex of reproductive qualities crossing sows has shown, that the combinations used in the classical scheme of variable crossing have appeared are less effective in comparison with the combinations including foreign meat breeds. It is recommended to change the traditional scheme of variable crossing, having excluded from it the Belarus black-motley breed and having entered foreign breeds of L and D and also to use hybrid male pigs (D x P)

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was realized a complex evaluation of producer bulls of different genotypes of origin for the further correction and breeding in different categories of agricultural enterprises. In course of the study there was conducted a preliminary (without quality evaluation of daughters) estimation of bulls which gave a precise performance of each bull, made it possible to correct its type and direction of breeding. Research made it possible to considerably increase the genetic trend in accordance with indexes of milk productivity which would make it possible to form a regional type of black-and-white cattle with the given indexes of productivity and reproduction. In course of the study there were analyzed the following breeds: black-and-white, Holstein, Hungarian breeding, Swedish breeding. Comparative evaluation of reproductive qualities of bulls in accordance with age-specific and breed types was presented. Body conformations of bulls of Holsten and Black-and-white of different ae-specific groups were stated. Results of complex evaluation of full-grown, under 5 year-old and replacement producing bulls of Holstein and Black-and-white breeds were presented.

Evaluation of amino-acid, mineral, and vitamin content, as well as indexes of meat safety obtained from young stock of cattle of different genotypes in accordance with possibility of its application as raw material for baby food production was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. In course of study there were used bull calves of white-and-black breed, Limousin breed and their crossbreeds. Research results showed that young stock of Limousin breed, Limousin x white-and-black crossbreds, and white-and-black breed (control group) gave high quality meat. In meat of animals of experimental groups there was stated high quality of almost all nonessential amino acids and nonreplaceable amino acids, in meat of crossbreeds there was noted considerable increasing of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In it there was 12,31% of linoleic acid against 4,75 in Limousin breed and 2,77% in white-and-black breed; and eicosatetraenoic acid – 2,4% against 1,24% and 0,7%, respectively. Also in meat of experimental bull calves there was stated higher content of vitamins, calcium and phosphorus, while the content of cuprum and zinc decreased

Determination of genetic structure of different population lines of Belarusian white-and-black breed in accordance with locus of kappa-casein gene (CSN3) was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. In course of study there were used DNA samples of Belarusian white-and-black breed cows (380 samples) and bioprobes of servicing bulls (83 samples). With the help of endonuclease Hindill there were revealed two alleles of kappa-casein (A and B) in DNA preparations. As a result of genetic typing of breeding animals by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) methods there were revealed three genotypes CSN3**AA, CSN3**AB, and CSN3**BB. The frequency of occurrence of desirable genotype CSN3**BB of Belarusian white-and-black breed of cows depending on breed and linear pertain varied from 2,2% up to 7,69%, for servicing bulls – from 0 up to 11,1% . The majority of homozygotic cows with undesirable cow genotype CSN3**AA belonged to the following lines: of Ruties Edward (2,31646 - 92,3%), Niko (86,0%), Vis Ajdal (933122 - 71,9%), Reflection Sovereign (198998 – 63,9%). The desirable CSN3**BB genotype in most of the cases was stated at Annas-Adema (30587) and Hiltes-Adema (37910) lines. Presence of heterozygote genotype predominated in Annas-Adema (46,1%) and Montvik Chiftein (36,3%) lines. Realized analysis of cow population lines of Danish and Holstein breeds showed that the average frequency of occurrence of CSN3**B allel was 17%, but lower concentration (15%) of CSN3**b allel was typical for the Danish breeds. Frequency of occurrence of CSN3**B allel in Holsten lines was 18%. In was revealed that in 86,6% of cases bulls were the genetic carriers of CSN3**A allel and only 11,4% of animals had the desirable allel CSN3**B in their genotype
