Hemodynamic effects of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in halothane-anesthetized dogs
1989
Bednarski, R.M. | Muir, W.W. III.
Hemodynamic effects of spontaneous ventilation, intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (IPPV), and high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) were compared in 6 dogs during halothane anesthesia. Anesthesia was induced with IV thiamylal Na and was maintained with halothane (end-tidal concentration, 1.09%). During placement of catheters, dogs breathed spontaneously through a conventional semiclosed anesthesia circuit. Data were collected, and dogs were mechanically ventilated, using IPPV or HFOV in random order. Ventilation was adjusted to maintain PaCO2 between 38 and 43 mm of Hg during IPPV and HFOV. Cardiac index, aortic blood pressure, and maximum rate of increase of left ventricular pressure were significantly (P less than 0.05) less during HFOV than during spontaneous ventilation, whereas right atrial and pulmonary artery pressure were significantly greater during HFOV than during spontaneous ventilation. During IPPV, only the maximum rate of increase of left ventricular pressure was significantly less than that during spontaneous ventilation.

1989
Copland, V.S. | Haskins, S.C. | Patz, J.
Oxymorphone was administered IV to dogs 4 times at 20-minute intervals (total dosage, 1 mg/kg of body weight, IV) on 2 separate occasions. Minute ventilation, mixed-expired carbon dioxide concentration, arterial and mixed-venous pH and blood gas tensions, arterial, central venous, pulmonary arterial, and pulmonary wedge pressures, and cardiac output were measured. Physiologic dead space, base deficit, oxygen transport, and vascular resistance were calculated before and at 5 minutes after the first dose of oxymorphone (0.4 mg/kg) and at 15 minutes after the first and the 3 subsequent doses of oxymorphone (0.2 mg/kg). During 1 of the 2 experiments in each dog, naloxone was administered 20 minutes after the last dose of oxymorphone; during the alternate experiment, naloxone was not administered. In 5 dogs, naloxone was administered IV in titrated dosages (0.005 mg/kg) at 1-minute intervals until the dogs were able to maintain sternal recumbency, and in the other 5 dogs, naloxone was administered IM as a single dose (0.04 mg/kg). Naloxone (0.01 mg/kg, IV or 0.04 mg/kg, IM) transiently reversed most of the effects of oxymorphone. Within 20 to 40 minutes after IV naloxone administration and within 40 to 70 minutes after IM naloxone administration, most variables returned to the approximate values measured before naloxone administration. The effects of oxymorphone outlasted the effects of naloxone; cardiovascular and pulmonary depression and sedation recurred in all dogs. Four hours and 20 minutes after the last dose of oxymorphone, alertness, responsiveness, and coordination improved in all dogs after IM administration of naloxone. Cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, or excitement was not observed after naloxone administration.

1989
Collins, M.T. | Backstrom, L.R. | Brim, T.A.
Transverse sections of snouts from 171 cross-bred (principally Yorkshire X American Landrace) pigs were evaluated for evidence of turbinate atrophy by use of conventional (atrophic rhinitis [AR] score) and morphometric methods. Of the 171 pigs, 35 were clinically normal (AR score, 0), 65 had mild AR (AR score, 1), 41 had moderate AR (AR score, 2), and 30 had severe AR (AR score, 3). Turbinate cross-sectional area (TA) and the ratio of TA to nostril cross-sectional area, called turbinate area ratio (TAR), had the lowest correlations (r = 0.24 to 0.55) with conventional AR score. Among clinically normal pigs, TA was greater in older pigs as expected, but the TAR values also were significantly (P less than 0.0001) different betwee n 15-week-old pigs (55 kg) and 22-week-old pigs (100 kg). Turbinate perimeter and turbinate perimeter ratio (TPR) were not influenced by pig age or source. The TPR values were closely correlated with subjective visual AR scores (r = 0.73), with AR scores derived by measuring the space between the ventral portion of the scroll and the floor of the nasal cavity (r = 0.72), and the actual size of this space in millimeters (r = 0.71). Mean TPR values for pigs assigned visual AR scores of 0, 1, 2, or 3 were 1.54, 1.25, 0.97, and 0.73, respectively. The 95% confidence intervals around these mean TRP values were discreet and did not overlap. Turbinate perimeter ratio, therefore, may be a more reliable morphometric measure of atrophic rhinitis and also provides parametric data suitable for quantitative analysis.

1989
Aguilera-Tejero, E. | Mayer-Valor, R. | Gomez-Cardenas, G.
To differentiate the origin of high total lactate dehydrogenase (LD) activity in canine sera, a spectrophotometric method based on the preferential inhibition of cardiac LD isoenzymes by pyruvate was performed. Comparison with the electrophoretic separation of LD isoenzyme activities and determination of the hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase-to-LD ratio indicated that the method proposed gave a better discrimination between cardiac and hepatic LD activities than did the other tests.

1989
Fitzgerald, P.R. | Mansfield, M.E.
Sixteen 7-week-old Holstein male calves were inoculated with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria zuernii. Four calves (controls) were euthanatized and necropsied at 14 and 20 days after inoculation (DAI). Two calves were treated with 20 mg of dexamethasone (IM) on 13, 14, and 15 DAI and euthanatized and necropsied 17 DAI and 2 calves were given similar treatments and necropsied 20 DAI. The 8 other calves were euthanatized and necropsied 20 DAI. Two were started on the anticoccidial drug decoquinate in feed 13 DAI; 2 others were given decoquinated on the same schedule plus dexamethasone on 13, 14, and 15 DAI. Two calves were given the antibiotic narasin in feed beginning 13 DAI and 2 calves were given parasin on the same schedule plus dexamethasone on 13, 14, and 15 DAI. All calves, except 2 controls necropsied 14 DAI and 4 calves given decoquinate, discharged moderate-to-large numbers of oocysts in feces and had moderate-to-severe changes in fecal consistency. Histologic examintions revealed large numbers of endogenous stages in tissues of calves treated or not treated with dexamethasone. Few endogenous stages were observed in tissues from calves that were given decoquinate or decoquinate plus dexamethasone. Calves given narasin or narasin plus dexamethasone had moderate-to-large numbers of endogenous stages in the tissues.

1989
Lavoie, J.P. | Spensley, M.S. | Smith, B.P. | Mihalyi, J.
Colostral volume and IgG and IgM concentrations were determined in 6 multiparous mares at foaling and then every 2 hours from 16 to 20 hours after parturition. Serum IgG and IgM concentrations at foaling also were determined in each mare. The rate of mammary secretion was 292 +/- 26 ml/h (range, 202 to 389 ml/h), and the colostral volume was 5.1 +/- 0.5 L (range, 3.2 to 7.0 L). The colostral IgG and IgM contents were 440 +/- 106 g (range, 199 to 855 g) and 3.1 +/- 0.9 g (range, 0.7 g to 7.1 g), respectively. There was no significant correlation between serum and initial colostral IgG and IgM concentration or between serum and total colostral IgG or IgM values. The colostral IgG and IgM concentrations at foaling correlated well with the total colostral IgG and IgM contents, respectively. The initial 250 ml of colostrum contained 10 +/- 1.4% (range, 6.0 to 13.9%) and 6 +/- 1.0% (range, 2.4 to 8.5%) of the total IgG and IgM contents, respectively, and the initial 500 ml of colostrum contained 20 +/- 2.7% (range 12.0 to 27.1%) and 14 +/- 1.2% (8.2 to 17%) of the total colostral IgG and IgM contents, respectively.
Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]Interaction of turkey complement with Escherichia coli isolated from turkeys
1989
Ellis, M.G. | Arp, L.H. | Lamont S.J.
The role of turkey complement in a serum bactericidal reaction was determined using serum-sensitive and serum resistant Escherichia coli isolated from turkeys. Inactivation of complement by heating serum (56 C for 40 minutes) or by treating serum with 10mM EDTA eliminated bactericidal activity. Serum sensitive E coli organisms were killed by turkey serum treated with 10 mM ethylene glycol-bis-beta-(aminoethyl ether)-N, N, N,' N,'-tetraacetic acid and 5 mM MgCl2. Exposure of normal turkey serum to serum-sensitive or serum resistant E coli resulted in equivalent reductions in hemolytic activity of serum. Treatment of serum-resistant E coli with antibody rendered the bacteria sensitive to bactericidal effects of normal turkey serum. Serum-sensitive E coli organisms were readily killed by an alternative complement pathway, serum-sensitive and serum-resistant E coli activated the complement system equally well, and antibody was required for complement-mediated killing of certain serum-resistant E coli organisms from turkeys.

1989
Bogaard, A.E.J.M. van den | Hazen, J. | Maes, J.H.
The detection of volatile fatty acids (VFA) by gas chromatography of 85 purulent specimens from abscesses or pyogenic infections in cats, dogs, rodents, and ruminants was compared with the results of bacteriologic culturing, and proved to be a rapid means of presumptively diagnosing anaerobic infections. Of 83 bacteriologically positive specimens, 52 (61%) yielded obligate anaerobes and in 50 specimens, 1 or more VFA (butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, isovaleric acid, caproic acid, or isocaproic acid) was detected. Forty-six specimens were positive for culturing of anaerobes and for detection of 1 or more of these VFA. By contrast, pus from infections caused by (facultative) aerobic microorganisms contained no VFA or only acetic and/or propionic acid.
Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]Comparison of the effect of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, corticosteroids, and sodium hyaluronate in the potentiation of a subinfective dose of Staphylococcus aureus in the midcarpal joint of horses
1989
Gustafson, S.B. | McIlwraith, C.W. | Jones, R.L.
Four groups of 8 horses each had 1 midcarpal joint injected with 33 colony-forming units (CFU) of viable Staphylococcus aureus plus: 1 ml of saline solution (group 1, control), 250 mg of polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG, group 2), 100 mg of methylprednisolone acetate (group 3), or 20 mg of sodium hyaulronate (group 4). Horses were euthanatized, and samples were obtained on the basis of clinical signs of septic arthritis that were nonresponsive to phenylbutazone administration. One group-1 horse, all 8 group-2 horses, 3 group-3 horses, and 4 group-horses 4 were culture-positive for S aureus and had clinical signs, results of synovial fluid analysis, and histopathologic findings that were consistent with sepsis. The addition of 250 mg of PSGAG increased the development of sepsis significantly (P = 0.001), compared with results in control horses. Differences in the development of sepsis between horses injected with methylprednisolone acetate or sodium hyaluronate and control horses were not significant.

1989
Alva-Valdes, R. | Wallace, D.H. | Foster, A.G. | Ericsson, G.F. | Wooden, I.W.
The efficacy of ivermectin as an in-feed formulation was evaluated against naturally acquired gastrointestinal helmiths, lungworms, and sarcoptic mites (experiment 1; n = 24) and against induced infection with intestinal nematodes (experiment 2; n = 24) in pigs. Treatments consisted of ivermectin administered in feed at concentrations calculated to provide 100 or 200 microgram/kg of body weight/d for 7 days or of nonmedicated feed (controls) for 7 days. At concentration of 100 microgram of ivermectin/kg/d, efficacy against naturally acquired infections was 97.7% for Ascaris suum, 97.8% for Metastrongylus spp, greater than 99% for Oesophagostomum spp, 100% for Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus, and 89.7% for Ascarops strongylina. Against induced infections (fourth-stage larvae), efficacy was 100% for A suum and 96.9% for Oesophagostomum spp. At concentration of 200 microgram of ivermectin/kg/d, efficacy against naturally acquired infections was 100% for A suum, Hyostrongylus rubidus, Metastrongylus spp; and 85.9% for Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus. Against induced infection (fourth-stage larvae), efficacy was 100% for A suum and 95% for Oesophagostomum spp. At concentrations of 100 and 200 microgram of ivermectin/kg/d, efficacy against Sarcoptes scabiei var suis was evidenced by elimination of the mite by posttreatment day 14.
