Мета. Провести господарську оцінку сортів амаранту ‘Харківський­1’, ‘Геліос’ і ‘Сем’ за внесення абсорбенту торгової марки MaxiMarin, використовуваного для нівелювання нестачі опадів і нерівномірного зволоження в Лісостепу України. Методи. Впродовж 2021–2023 рр. у польових умовах (м. Умань, 48°46¢N, 30°14¢E) досліджували три сорти амаранту й абсорбент торгової марки MaxiMarin у формі гранул, норма внесення якого становила 25 кг/га. Оцінювання сортів здійснювали за такими параметрами: маса листків, суцвіття й коріння, врожайність зеленої маси у фазах цвітіння та повної стиглості. Також визначали врожайність зерна амаранту та вміст у ньому протеїну, жирів і крохмалю. У процесі роботи послуговувались методами дисперсійного й кореляційного аналізів. Результати. Застосований абсорбент істотно вплинув на показники продуктивності, яка характеризувалася значною міжсортовою різницею. Зокрема, середнє збільшення маси листків з однієї рослини для досліджуваних сортів амаранту становило 12,2%, маси суцвіття – 8,9%, або 3,6 г/росл. Найкраще на внесення абсорбенту, що вдосконалило умови вирощування, зреагував сорт ‘Харківський­1’, маса суцвіття якого підвищилася на 12,6%, або 5,3 г/росл. Посилення ростових процесів стало можливим завдяки поліпшеному розвитку кореневої системи та підвищенню її маси залежно від варіанта на 12,3–24,6% (2,1–3,0 г/росл.). Водночас у середньому на 12,4% (11,2–13,3% у різних сортів) збільшився показник загальної маси рослин. Урожайність зеленої маси зростала на 13,6–16,5% (4,75–5,75 т/га) завдяки використанню абсорбенту й була в межах 33,0–40,0 т/га. Найвищими її значеннями характеризувався сорт ‘Сем’ – 34,3 т/га у контролі та 40,0 т/га в дослідах зі внесеним абсорбентом. Його застосування також спричинило збільшення врожайності різних сортів амаранту на 0,30–0,38 т/га, або 16,0–18,3% (найурожайнішим був сорт ‘Сем’ – 2,08 та 2,46 т/га залежно від варіанта досліду) й істотне зменшення концентрації протеїну (на 0,1–10,0%), жирів (на 7,4–19,5%) і крохмалю (на 3,2–8,2%). Висновки. Абсорбенти є ефективним засобом для нівелювання нерівномірного зволоження та забезпечення максимальної реалізації продуктивного потенціалу амаранту, проте поліпшення водного режиму негативно впливає на накопичення протеїну, жирів і крохмалю. | Purpose. To carry out an economic evaluation of amaranth varieties ‘Kharkivskyi­1’, ‘Helios’ and ‘Sem’ for the application of MaxiMarin absorbent used to compensate for lack of rainfall and uneven moisture in the forest steppe of Ukraine. Methods. During 2021–2023, three varieties of amaranth and MaxiMarin brand absorbent in the form of granules were studied in the field (Uman, 48°46¢N, 30°14¢E) at an application rate of 25 kg/ha. The varieties were evaluated according to the following parameters: weight of leaves, inflorescence and roots, yield of green mass in the flowering and full maturity phases. Amaranth grain yield, protein, fat and starch content were also determined. The methods of analysis of variance and correlation were used. Results. The absorbent applied had a significant effect on the productivity indicators, which were characterized by a significant difference between varieties. In particular, the average increase in the mass of leaves per plant for the studied varieties of amaranth was 12.2%, the mass of inflorescence – 8.9%, or 3.6 g/plant. The variety ‘Kharkivskyi­1’ responded best to the introduction of an absorbent that improved growth conditions, the weight of its inflorescence increased by 12.6%, or 5.3g/plant. The strengthening of growth processes was made possible by the improved deve­lopment of the root system and an increase in its mass, depending on the variety, of 12.3–24.6% (2.1–3.0 g/plant). At the same time, total plant weight increased by an average of 12.4% (11.2–13.3% in different varieties). Green mass yield increased by 13.6–16.5% (4.75–5.75 t/ha) due to the use of absorbent and was in the range of 33.0–40.0 t/ha. The highest values were characterized by the variety ‘Sem’ – 34.3 t/ha in the control and 40.0 t/ha in the experiments with added absorbent. Its application also caused an increase in the yield of different varieties of amaranth by 0.30–0.38 t/ha or 16.0–18.3% (the most productive was the variety ‘Sem’ – 2.08 and 2.46 t/ha, depending on the variant of the experiment) and a significant decrease in the concentration of protein (by 0.1–10.0%), fats (by 7.4–19.5%) and starch (by 3.2–8.2%). Conclusions. Absorbents are an effective tool for levelling moisture imbalances and ensuring maximum realization of the productive potential of amaranth, but improving the water regime has a negative effect on the accumulation of protein, fats and starch.

Мета. Дослідити накопичення катехінів, антоціанів, лейкоантоціанів та аскорбінової кислоти в рослинах видів роду Arctium, інтродукованих у Національному ботанічному саду імені М. М. Гришка. Методи. Об’єктом досліджень слугували інтродуковані рослини роду Arctium, а саме: A. lappa L. (лопух справжній), A. tomentosum Mill. (лопух повстистий), A. nemorosum Lej. (лопух дібровний) та A. minus Bernh (лопух малий). Фітохімічні аналізи дослідних зразків органів рослин проводили у різних фазах онтогенезу. Вільні катехіни, антоціани та лейкоантоціани визначали фотоколориметричним методом. Результати. Встановлено, що рослини другого року вегетації накопичують більше катехінів ніж однорічні. Максимальна їх кількість – у листкових пластинках A. lappa та A. minus у фазі бутонізації (180,0 ± 0,3 та 144,0 ± 0,1 мг% відповідно). Вміст лейкоантоціанів у листкових пластинках однорічних рослин варіював від 72,0 ± 0,4 (A. lappa) до 660,0 ± 0,6 мг% (A. minus); дворічних – від 18,0 ± 0,6 (A. nemorosum) до 165,0 ± 0,5 мг% (A. lappa). Найбільше цих сполук виявлено в листковій пластинці A.minus першого року вегетації. Кількість антоціанів у листкових пластинках однорічних рослин змінювалася від 9,0 ± 0,1 (A. nemorosum) до 42,0 ± 0,4 мг% (A. minus), у черешках – від 9,8 ± 0,06 (A. tomentosum) до 117,0 ± 0,6 мг% (A. minus). На другий рік вегетації їх накопичення становило від 12,0 ± 0,3 (A. minus) до 42,0 ± 0,6 мг% (A. tomentosum) у листкових пластинках та від 9,6 ± 0,1 (A. tomentosum) до 48,0 ± 0,1 мг% (A. nemorosum) у черешках. Найбільше антоціанів виявлено в черешках A. minus першого року вегетації. Висновки. За результатами фітохімічних досліджень встановлено, що рослини видів роду Arctium, інтродуковані в Національному ботанічному саду імені М. М. Гришка, протягом вегетації накопичують різну кількість фенольних сполук. Виявлено залежність між часткою флавоноїдів у листках та температурою повітря. Збільшення вмісту антоціанів відбувається за зниження температури, а катехінів, навпаки, – за її підвищення. Максимальна кількість аскорбінової кислоти накопичується в листкових пластинках однорічних рослин видів роду Arctium. | Purpose. To study the accumulation of catechins, anthocyanins, leucoanthocyanins and ascorbic acid in plants of the genus Arctium, introduced to the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden. Methods. Introduced plants of the genus Arctium were used for the study, namely A. lappa L. (greater burdock), A. tomentosum Mill. (woolly burdock), A. nemorosum Lej. (wood burdock) and A. minus Bernh (lesser burdock). Phytochemical analyses of plant organ samples were carried out at different stages of ontogeny. Free catechins, anthocyanins and leucoanthocyanins were determined by the photocolorimetric method. Results. It was found that second year plants accumulate more catechins than first year plants. Their maximum amount is found in the leaf plates of A. lappa and A. minus in the budding phase (180.0 ± 0.3 and 144.0 ± 0.1 mg%, respectively). The content of leucoanthocyanins in the leaf plates of one­year­old plants varied from 72.0 ± 0.4 (A. lappa) to 660.0 ± 0.6 mg% (A. minus); two­year­old plants – from 18.0 ± 0.6 (A. nemorosum) to 165.0 ± 0.5 mg% (A. lappa). Most of these compounds were found in the leaf blade of A. minus in the first year of vegetation. The amount of anthocyanins in leaf plates of one­year­old plants varied from 9.0 ± 0.1 (A. nemorosum) to 42.0 ± 0.4 mg% (A. minus), in petioles from 9.8 ± 0.06 (A. tomentosum) to 117.0 ± 0.6 mg% (A. minus). In the second year of vegetation, their accumulation ranged from 12.0 ± 0.3 (A. minus) to 42.0 ± 0.6 mg% (A. tomentosum) in leaf plates and from 9.6 ± 0.1 (A. tomentosum) to 48.0 ± 0.1 mg% (A. nemorosum) in petioles. Most anthocyanins were found in the petioles of A. minus from the first year of vegetation. Conclusions. The phytochemical studies established that plants of the Arctium genus, introduced to the M. M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden, accumulate varying amounts of phenolic compounds during the growing season. The proportion of flavonoids in leaves was found to be related to air temperature. An increase in temperature leads to a decrease in the content of anthocyanins, while an increase in catechins occurs due to a decrease in temperature. The leaf plates of annual plants belonging to the Arctium genus accumulate the highest levels of ascorbic acid.

Raco/eus trichophorus gen. sp. nov. is described for a tropical sterile filamentous lichenized fungus which overgrows various crustose lichens on bark. It shares some features with Cystoco/eus and Racodium, but is unique in having non-lichenized long lateral spines. The genus, which is known from China, the Ivory Coast, and Peru, is of uncertain systematic position; on the basis of morphological similarities, however, it may be referred to "? Capnodia/es (incertae sedis)" ad interim. In addition, the nomenclature and typification of the monotypic genera Cystoco/eus and Racodium are reviewed, and lectotypes selected for the type of each. The available information on the ecology and distribution of these two genera is also summarized, and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of all three species are presented for the first time.

Мета. Визначити поліморфізм мікросателітних локусів QTL-hotspot-регіону групи зчеплення 4, пов’язаного з толерантністю до посухи, у сортів нуту звичайного української селекції. Методи. Екстрагування та очищення ДНК з проростків ЦТАБ­методом; полімеразна ланцюгова реакція; горизонтальний гель­електрофорез; визначення розмірів продуктів ампліфікації за допомогою програми «Image J». Результати. Встановлено алельні комбінації мікросателітних локусів ICCM0249, NCPGR127, TAA170, NCPGR21, TA130 і STMS11 QTL­hotspot­регіону групи зчеплення 4 геному нуту. За локусами STMS11, NCPGR127 і NCPGR21, які виявилися неполіморфними в межах аналізованої вибірки сортів, детектовано по одному алелю; за ICCM0249 і TAA170 – по два; за TAA130 – три алелі, що вказує на їхню поліморфність. Висновки. Серед семи сортів нуту української селекції три мікросателітні локуси є неполіморфними, а саме: STMS11, NCPGR127 і NCPGR21. Ще три – поліморфними з двома алелями для локусів ICCM0249 і TAA170 і трьома для TAA130. За результатами аналізу сортів встановлено п’ять типів комбінацій алелів мікросателітних локусів ICCM0249, NCPGR127, TAA170, NCPGR21, TA130 і STMS11. У сорту ‘Пам’ять’ ідентифіковано унікальний для досліджуваної вибірки алель розміром 185 п. н. | Purpose. To determine the polymorphism of microsa­tellite loci of the QTL-hotspot-region of linkage group 4, associated with drought tolerance in Ukrainian chickpea varieties. Methods. Extraction and purification of DNA from seedlings using the CTAB method; polymerase chain reaction; horizontal gel electrophoresis; determination of the size of amplification products using the “Image J” prog­ram. Results. Allelic combinations of microsatellite loci ICCM0249, NCPGR127, TAA170, NCPGR21, TA130, STMS11 of the QTL­hotspot­region of linkage group 4 of the chickpea genome were established. It was found that the loci STMS11, NCPGR127, NCPGR21 were not polymorphic within the sample of varieties analyzed, one allele was detected for each locus; two alleles were detected for the loci ICCM0249 and TAA170 and three alleles for the locus TAA130, indica­ting their polymorphism. Conclusions. Microsatellite loci STMS11, NCPGR127, NCPGR21 are non­polymorphic in seven Ukrainian chickpea varieties. Three loci are polymorphic with two alleles for ICCM0249 and TAA170 and three alleles for TAA130. According to the analysis of chickpea varie­ties, five types of allelic combinations of microsatellite loci ICCM0249, NCPGR127, TAA170, NCPGR21, TA130, STMS11 were established. An allele of 185 bp unique to the sample of cultivars studied was identified in the variety ‘Pamiat’

Development and improvement of a female component of MS hybrids of sugar beet were carried out on the basis of the following methods: inereasing frequency of occurrence of sterility maintainers by means of preliminary saturation of the population with alleles of the x and z genes; the use, as a female form, of simple sterile hybrids from the crossing of sterile lines with unrelated O-types; and also the drawing in of complexes of valuable genes from materials of foreign origin.

Мета. Визначити кореляційні зв’язки між урожайністю та показниками якості зерна сортів і селекційних ліній пшениці м’якої озимої. Методи. Дослідження проводили в умовах Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН України (МІП) впродовж 2019/20–2021/22 рр. Оцінювали десять нових сортів і чотири селекційні лінії пшениці м’якої озимої миронівської селекції. Показники якості зерна визначали згідно із загальноприйнятими методами в лабораторії якості зерна МІП. Для встановлення кореляційних зв’язків розраховували коефіцієнти кореляції (r) Пірсона. Результати. Між урожайністю та показниками якості зерна пшениці м’якої озимої встановлено різні за напрямом та силою кореляційні зв’язки ( 0,32 < r < 0,61). Зокрема, в роки досліджень одержано вірогідні прямі коефіцієнти кореляції між урожайністю та показником маси 1000 зерен (r = 0,17–0,46). Також за певних гідротермічних умов вирощування виявлено вірогідну прямолінійну залежність (r = 0,13–0,61) урожайності від водопоглинальної здатності борошна, натури, склоподібності зерна, вмісту білка та клейковини. Виділено сорти й селекційні лінії пшениці м’якої озимої, які під час досліджень мали стабільно прямі кореляційні зв’язки між врожайністю та масою 1000 зерен, склоподібністю зерна, вмістом білка, вмістом клейковини, індексом еластичності тіста, силою борошна, пружністю тіста, водопоглинальною здатністю борошна. Висновки. Виокремлені сорти й селекційні лінії пшениці м’якої озимої можуть бути використані в селекційному процесі як джерела поєднання в одному генотипі високої врожайності та певних підвищених показників якості для створення конкурентоспроможних сортів. | Purpose. To determine the correlations between yield and grain quality indicators of varieties and breeding lines of winter bread wheat. Methods. The study was conducted under the conditions of the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat NAAS of Ukraine (MIW) during 2019/20–2021/22. Ten new varieties and four breeding lines of winter bread wheat of Myronivka breeding were evaluated. Grain quality indicators were determined in the grain quality laboratory of MIW according to conventional techniques. Pearson’s correlation coefficients (r) were calculated to establish correlations. Results. Correlations with different direction and strength were found between yield and quality indicators of winter bread wheat grain (–0.32 < r < 0.61). During the research years, reliable direct correlation coefficients were obtained between yield and the 1000 kernel weight indicator (r = 0.17–0.46). Also, a reliable linear dependence (r = 0.13–0.61) of yield with water absorption capacity of flour, test weight, grain vitreous, with protein and wet gluten content, but only under certain hydrothermal growing conditions. The varieties and breeding lines of winter bread wheat were identified which, during the years of research, showed stable direct correlations between yield and the indicators of 1000 kernel weight, grain vitreous, protein content, wet gluten content, sedimentation value, dough elasticity index, deformation energy, dough tenacity, water absorption capacity of flour. Conclusion. The selected varieties and breeding lines of winter bread wheat can be used in the breeding process as sources for combining high yield with certain improved quality indicators in one genotype to create competitive varieties.

Мета. Дослідити сучасний стан і структуру національних сортових рослинних ресурсів, проаналізувати динаміку їхнього формування, встановити нові виклики та загрози, що постають перед національними інтересами й продовольчою безпекою держави. Методи. У процесі досліджень використовували загальнонаукові методи, зокрема гіпотези, спостереження, пошуковий з елементами екстраполяції джерелознавчої бази даних; аналізу, порівняльного оцінювання та синтезу для формування висновків. Результати. Фізико­географічне розташування України в центрі Європи визначає ресурсний експортно­імпортний сегмент сортів та гібридів, який залежить від міжнародних тенденцій і трендів продовольчого ринку. Останнім часом наша держава втрачає передові позиції на ринку сортових ресурсів сільськогосподарських культур. Частка сортів українських заявників у Державному реєстрі сортів рослин, придатних для поширення в Україні, на початку третього кварталу 2024 року була меншою, ніж іноземних, і трохи перевищувала 44% (кукурудзи – 45,3%, соняшнику – 32,9%, овочів – 23,3%, ріпаку – 19,1%, буряків – 19,2%). Наразі збережено пріоритетність вітчизняної селекції для таких груп: зернові – 52,3%, кормові – 64,2%, лікарські – 88,7%. За прогнозами фахівців, найближчими роками три четверті вирощуваних у нашій державі сортів сільськогосподарських культур будуть мати іноземне походження. Ця ситуація спричиняє значне занепокоєння не лише через посилення імпортної залежності, але й реальну перспективу занепаду вітчизняної селекції та формування ризиків у сфері охорони прав на сорти рослин. Проаналізовано причини такого стану національних сортових ресурсів і тенденції розвитку галузі насінництва основних стратегічних видів з огляду на виробництво насіння як іноземної, так і вітчизняної селекції, частку якого на ринку встановлено під час досліджень. Визначено обсяги та основних виробників кондиційного насіння в Україні. Висновки. Проаналізовано стан сортових рослинних ресурсів, виявлено тенденції та основні проблеми, що виникають у процесі їхнього формування. Визначено головні напрями розвитку та імплементації до норм європейського вітчизняного законодавства у сфері охорони прав на сорти рослин і насінництва.

Мета. З’ясувати посухостійкість рослин сортів англійських троянд.Методи. Польовий, анатомічний, біометричний. Посухостійкість рослин у польових умовах оцінювали за 6-баловою шкалою С. С. П’ятницького (1961). Kількість продихів на одиницю площі листкової пластинки визначали за допомогою сканувального електронного мікроскопа JSM-6700F (JEOL, Токіо, Японія).Результати. Посухостійкість рослин сортів англійських троянд досліджували як у польових, так і лабораторних умовах. За візуальними спостереженнями в періоди з низьким рівнем вологозабезпечення тургор листків не знижувався, тож польову посухостійкість усіх сортів оцінено у 5 балів. За параметрами щільності продихів на одиницю площі листка виділено сорти, які мають максимальні та мінімальні значення цього показника.Висновки. Усі досліджені сорти англійських троянд із колекції Державного дендрологічного парку «Олександрія» НАН України є достатньо посухостійкими в польових умовах. Однак, вони суттєво різняться за показниками щільності продихів на одиницю площі листка рослин. Найбільшу середню кількість продихів на 0,5 мм2 (163,67±7,93 шт.) зафіксовано в рослин сорту ‘Alan Titchmarsh’, найменшу (47,67±1,94 шт.) – у ‘Charles Austin’. Порівняння даних щодо морфології листків англійських троянд та щільності продихів показало, що сортам з меншими розмірами листків (‘Cottage Rose’, ‘Fisherman Friend’, ‘Noble Antony’, ‘Crocus Rose’) притаманна більша кількість продихів на одиницю площі, що вказує на їхню вищу посухостійкість. Отримані дані польових і лабораторних досліджень будуть ураховані під час формування рекомендацій щодо використання троянд для озеленення міських територій, де рослини можуть опинитися в екстремальніших, аніж у дендропарку, умовах. | Purpose. To study the drought resistance of plants of English roses varieties.Methods. Field, anatomical, biometric. The drought resistance of plants in the field was assessed according to S. S. Pyatnitsky 6-point scale (1961). The number of stomata per unit area of the leaf blade was determined using a JSM-6700F scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Tokyo, Japan). Results. The drought resistance of plants of English rose varieties was investigated both in the field and laboratory conditions. According to visual observations, during periods with a low level of moisture supply, leaf turgor did not decrease; therefore, the field drought resistance of all varieties was estimated at 5 points. According to the parameters of stomatal density per unit of leaf area, varieties that have the maximum and minimum values of this indicator were identified.Conclusions. It was found that all studied varieties of English roses from the collection of the State Dendrological Park “Alexandria” of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are quite drought-resistant in the field. But they differed significantly in the density of stomata per unit area. The largest average number of stomata per 0.5 mm2 (163.67±7.93 pcs.) was recorded in the variety ‘Alan Titchmarsh’, the lowest (47.67±1.94) – in ‘Charles Austin’. Comparison of data on leaf morphology of English roses and stomata density showed that varieties with smaller leaf sizes (‘Cottage Rose’, ‘Fisherman Friend’, ‘Noble Antony’, ‘Crocus Rose’) have a greater number of stomata per unit area, which indicates their high drought resistance. The data obtained from field and laboratory studies will be taken into account in the formation of recommendations on the use of roses for landscaping urban areas, where plants may find themselves in more extreme conditions than in an arboretum.

Мета. Вивчити морфологічні й цитологічні особливості пиляків, пилку та маточок рослин роду Miscanthus, отриманих в умовах in vitro. Методи. Препарати маточок, незапліднених насіннєвих зачатків, пиляків та пилку, незабарвлені або забарвлені розчином карміну (2%) в оцтовій кислоті (45%) чи розчином метиленового синього, досліджували методом світлової мікроскопії. Вимірювання для рослин різних видів міскантусу, а також підрахунок кількості пилку різного діаметра здійснювали в десятиразовому повторенні. Результати. Вивчено морфологічні й цитологічні особливості генеративних органів китайського, цукроквіткового та гігантського видів міскантусу. Встановлено, що квітка цієї рослини однодомна, містить як тичинки, так і маточку. Забарвлення пиляків жовте або рожево-жовте, їхні тканини складаються з видовжених клітин довжиною 70–100 мкм. Маточка має зав’язь з двома стовпчиками, що несуть довгі (2,0–2,8 мм) перисті приймочки, колір яких варіюється від білого до яскраво-рожевого. Форма пір’ячок маточки помірно розгалужена; довжина – 160–300 мкм; ширина – 20–30 мкм; розташування почергове; кількість маленьких відгалужень становить 10–15 шт. Пилок різних видів міскантусу відрізняється за якісними та кількісними ознаками, зокрема у M. sinensis і M. sacchariflorus він характеризується округлою формою, вирівняністю та однорідністю (43–48 мкм у діаметрі), а в M. giganteus є більш гетерогенним за розміром (діаметр 23–45 мкм). Пилок має одну округлу орнаментовану пору діаметром 2,7–4,0 мкм. Висновки. За результатами проведених досліджень надано морфологічну та цитологічну характеристику генеративних органів рослин M. sinensis, M. sacchariflorus, M. giganteus, а саме: маточок, пиляків і пилку. Дані, що отримано, слід враховувати в подальшій селекційній роботі у процесі створення ди- та триплоїдних гібридів міскантусу.

Creation of Initial raw for breeding of winter wheat by change of the development type under low temperatures influence was described. Seeds of spring wheat were vernalized in aluminum weighting bottle. By using low temperatures at sawing of M2-6 at the begin ind of optimal terms of sawing of winter wheat, new winter-hardy variety of Voloshkova was bred.

Мета. Оцінити якісні показники зерна сортів ячменю ярого, вирощуваного в різних ґрунтово-кліматичних умовах. Методи. Під час досліджень використовували лабораторний, розрахунковий і статистичний методи, для підготовки висновків – аналізу та синтезу. Результати. У результаті досліджень 2020–2021 рр. вдалося виявити вплив ґрунтово-кліматичних зон (Степу, Лісостепу й Полісся) та умов вирощування на такі показники якості різних сортів ячменю ярого, як вирівняність зерна і вміст білка. Так, вирівняність у різні роки випробувань коливалася від 86,7 (висока, Полісся) до 95,1% (дуже висока, Лісостеп). 2021 року завдяки сприятливим метеорологічним умовам періоду вегетації її показники вдалося збільшити, порівнюючи з 2020 р., на 4,3% у Степу, 4,6% в Лісостепу та майже на 6,0% у Поліссі. У середньому вирівняність зерна, вирощеного в різних філіях УІЕСР, зросла на 5,6%. Максимальні її значення отримано для сортів ‘Avus’ – 93,9% (Степ), ‘Novyi Svitanok’ – 94,5–96,6% (Полісся, Лісостеп). Залежно від ґрунтово-кліматичної зони та року випробування вміст білка в зерні варіювався від 10,9 (низький, Степ) до 13,4% (середній, Лісостеп). У середньому цей показник знижувався у 2021 р. на 2,5% проти 2020 р., і лише в зоні Полісся зафіксували його збільшення на 2,6%. Найвищий уміст білка виявлено в сортів ‘Істр’ – 13,5–13,9% (Степ і Лісостеп) та ‘Геркулес’ – 13,4% (Полісся). Сорти ‘Амадей’, ‘Істр’ і ‘Novyi Svitanok’ поєднали обидві господарсько-цінні ознаки. Оптимальна температура повітря та висока вирівняність сприяють збільшенню врожайності ячменю ярого. Водночас під час формування високого врожаю в культурі знижується вміст білка в зерні. Висновки. У середньому за 2020–2021 рр. вирівняність зерна ячменю ярого становила 92,3% (Степ), 95,4% (Лісостеп) і 93,2% (Полісся); вміст білка в насінні – 11,8% (Степ), 12,4% (Лісостеп) і 11,6% (Полісся). На формування якісних показників насіння ячменю ярого впливали умови вирощування, що склалися у відповідній ґрунтово-кліматичній зоні.

Anthracnose of chili (Capsicum spp.) causes major production losses throughout Asia where chili plants are grown. A total of 260 Colletotrichum isolates, associated with necrotic lesions of chili leaves and fruit were collected from chili producing areas of Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Taiwan. Colletotrichum truncatum was the most commonly isolated species from infected chili fruit and was readily identified by its falcate spores and abundant setae in the necrotic lesions. The other isolates consisted of straight conidia (cylindrical and fusiform) which were difficult to differentiate to species based on morphological characters. Taxonomic analysis of these straight conidia isolates based on multi-gene phylogenetic analyses (ITS, gapdh, chs-1, act, tub2, his3, ApMat, gs) revealed a further seven known Colletotrichum species, C. endophyticum, C. fructicola, C. karsti, C. plurivorum, C. scovillei, C. siamense and C. tropicale. In addition, three novel species are also described as C. javanense, C. makassarense and C. tainanense, associated with anthracnose of chili fruit in West Java (Indonesia); Makassar, South Sulawesi (Indonesia); and Tainan (Taiwan), respectively. Colletotrichum siamense is reported for the first time causing anthracnose of Capsicum annuum in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. This is also the first report of C. fructicola causing anthracnose of chili in Taiwan and Thailand and C. plurivorum in Malaysia and Thailand. Of the species with straight conidia, C. scovillei (acutatum complex), was the most prevalent throughout the surveyed countries, except for Sri Lanka from where this species was not isolated. Colletotrichum siamense (gloeosporioides complex) was also common in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Pathogenicity tests on chili fruit showed that C. javanense and C. scovillei were highly aggressive, especially when inoculated on non-wounded fruit, compared to all other species. The existence of new, highly aggressive exotic species, such as C. javanense, poses a biosecurity risk to production in countries which do not have adequate quarantine regulations to restrict the entry of exotic pathogens.

Мета. Використовуючи статистичні методи, проаналізувати за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності лінії конкурсного випробування пшениці м’якої ярої і виявити серед них такі, що вирізняються високою стабільністю врожайності зерна. Методи. Дослідження проводили протягом 2018–2020 рр. на базі Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. У процесі оброблення отриманих результатів послуговувалися загально­прийнятими методами генетико-статистичного аналізу. Результати. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу в різні роки дає змогу отримати інформацію щодо особливостей реакції генотипів на зміну екологічних умов. У результаті проведених досліджень встановлено, що високопластичними є лінії Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0,59), Erythrospermum 15-32  (bi = 0,44) і Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0,22). За розрахунками, екологічно стабільними вважають лінії, варіанса стабільності яких дорівнює нулю (S2di = 0,00) або близька до нуля (S2di = 0,01). З погляду практичності цінними є лінії із сукупним проявом високої екологічної пластичності та стабільності, а саме: Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0,44; S2di = 0,01), що має низьку норму реакції та може забезпечувати незмінно високий рівень врожайності за будь-яких умов вирощування. Найціннішими є генотипи, що поєднують у собі низький рівень коефіцієнта варіації (CV ≤ 10,0%), високу гомеостатичність і селекційну цінність. Серед них – лінії Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206,42, Sc = 4,11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98,41, Sc = 3,91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78,57, Sc = 3,76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54,84, Sc = 3,75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54,60, Sc = 4,17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35,60, Sc = 3,78) і Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46,66, Sc = 3,58). Висновки. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу має важливе значення для створення нових високопродуктивних сортів з адаптивним потенціалом. Метод оцінки екологічної пластичності та варіанси її стабільності дав змогу диференціювати лінії пшениці м’якої ярої конкурсного випробування за реакцією на зміну умов вирощування. Для оптимальнішого відбору селекційного матеріалу за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності у селекційних програмах слід враховувати ранжовані оцінки генотипів.

За результатами кореляційного аналізу посівних площ проса посівного за період 2011–2020 рр. визначено, що площі під посівами проса посівного в Україні залежать від світових (r = 0,34). Визначено, що високий рівень урожайності проса посівного отримано в зоні Лісостепу, а саме в Полтавській, Хмельницькій, Черкаській, Сумській та Харківській областях (2,20–2,51 т/га). Достатньо високі показники отримано у Вінницькій, Київській (зона Лісостепу) та Кіровоградській (зона Степу) областях (1,86–2,02 т/га). Низьку врожайність за 10 років відзначено у Рівненській, Житомирській та Волинській областях, які належать до зони Полісся (1,09–1,34 т/га). Показано, що протягом 2011–2015 рр. висока варіабельність урожайності проса спостерігалася в Хмельницькій, Вінницькій та Волинській областях. Коефіцієнт варіації становив 42,0–71,3%. У 2016–2020 рр. найбільшу варіацію відзначено в Донецькій, Волинській та Одеській областях. Коефіцієнт варіації – 31,8–43,9%. Визначено, що за період 2011–2015 рр. високою пластичністю врожайності проса посівного характеризуються Вінницька, Донецька, Київська, Кіровоградська, Сумська, Харківська, Хмельницька, Черкаська та Полтавська області. У проміжок із 2016 до 2020 рр. високу пластичність ознаки врожайності відзначено у Вінницькій, Київській, Харківській, Полтавській, Черкаській, Сумській та Хмельницькій областях. Висновки. За результатами проведених досліджень установлено, що під час скорочення посівних площ під просом посівним у світі, обсяг його виробництва в Україні збільшується. Визначено, що найбільша врожайність просо посівного за досліджувані роки отримана в зоні Лісостепу. Відповідно до розрахованої пластичності врожайності проса посівного визначено, що для реалізації біологічного потенціалу сприятливі умови були в Донецькій та Кіровоградській областях зони Степу, у лісостеповій зоні – Полтавська, Київська, Харківська, Хмельницька, Черкаська та Сумська області.

BACKGROUND: Developing drought-tolerant crops critically depends on the efficient response of a genotype to the limited water availability, a trait known as phenological plasticity. Our understanding of the phenological plasticity remains limited, in particular, about its relationships with plant developmental program. Here, we examined the plastic response of spring wheat at tillering, booting, heading, and anthesis stages to constant or periodic drought stress. The response was assessed by morphological and physiological parameters including symptoms. RESULTS: The dynamics of morphological symptoms were indicators of the plasticity identification of drought. We found that spring wheat exhibits higher phenological plasticity during tillering stage followed by the heading stage, while booting and anthesis stages are the most sensitive. Also, the adaptive response is thought to be influenced with the plant height genes. Furthermore, periodic stress caused more pronounced inhibition of yield than the constant stress, with limited resistance resolution under long period. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows the importance of considering the phenological plasticity in designing screens for drought tolerance in spring wheat and proposes tillering as the most informative stage for capturing genotypes with tolerance to limit water availability.

Purpose. To identify spring durum wheat accessions with high yield level and by yield components for their involvement in breeding programs as a source material. Methods. Field, statistical. Results. The results of the study of 65 collection samples of spring durum wheat of various ecological and geographical origin in terms of productivity in 2016–2018 are presented. The research results indicate that the samples of spring durum wheat had different yield level depending on the conditions of the year of cultivation. According to the calculations of the degree of yield stability parameters, the samples were found that ensure its level under fluctuations in weather conditions with regression coefficient close to one as follows ‘Omskiy izumrud’ (RUS), ‘Korona’, ‘Toma’, ‘Nauryz 6’ (KAZ), ‘Dura king’, ‘Candura’ (CAN), ‘Tera’, ‘Novatsiia’ (UKR), thus indicating their semi-intensive type. Collection samples of spring durum wheat that under optimal weather conditions are capable of producing significant yield increase are distinguished by wide ecological reaction. These are samples with regression coefficient more than one ‘MIP Raiduzhna’, ‘Hordeiforme 13-07’ (UKR), ‘Lan’, ‘Salaut’, ‘Ertol’ (KAZ), ‘Bezenchukskaya 205’, ‘Lilek’ (RUS). These samples can be characterized by their adaptive properties as intense ones, with a pronounced response to the environment. Over the years of the research, grain number per spike varied from 35.9 to 38.8 pcs. Year conditions in 2016 were the most favorable for plant growth and development, while index of conditions was 4.1, and the average grain number per spike was 41.4 pcs. Year conditions in 2017 and 2018 were less favorable for growth and development of durum spring wheat, and therefore there was a negative value of index of year conditions (lj = -5.1 and lj = 0.5, respectively) with less grain number per spike (32.2 and 38.2 pcs., respectively). According to the trait «1000 kernel weight», the samples were identified with regression coefficient close to one under fluctuations of weather conditions, i.e ‘Korona’, ‘Raya’ (KAZ), ‘Lilek’, ‘Bezenchukskaya 205’ (RUS), ‘MIP Raiduzhna’ (UKR). The grain weight per spike in the collection samples varied from 1.27 to 1.77 g. The stable samples ‘Ertol’, ‘Salaut’, ‘Damsinskaya yantarnaya’ (KAZ), ‘Lilek’ (RUS), ‘Novatsiia’ (UKR), ‘Duraking’, ‘Candura’ (CAN) promising in spring wheat breeding were identified and can be involved in hybridization. Conclusions. Stable and plastic samples were identified among collection material of spring durum wheat in terms of productivity for involvement in scientific programs as source material.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of agronomic and grain quality traits of 11 spring barley varieties from the Latvian breeding programme grown in two locations for four years. The study was carried out on 11 Latvian spring barley varieties: nine covered varieties ‘Abava’, ‘Ansis’, ‘Austris’, ‘Didzis’, ‘Gāte’, ‘Idumeja’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Kristaps’, and ‘Saule PR’ and two hull-less varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’. Plants of the varieties were grown in field trials of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, at two sites (Priekuļi and Stende) during 2014–2017. Varieties ‘Didzis’, ‘Jumara’, and ‘Ansis’ yielded significantly above the grand mean in eight environments (5.70 t•haE−1; LSD = 0.476 t•haE−1). ‘Didzis’ showed relatively high dynamic yield stability and broad adaptability to all environments (bi = 0.90; b = 1; s2d = 0.07). Grain yield for varieties ‘Jumara’ and ‘Ansis’ showed specific adaptability to unfavourable environments (bi = 0.48 and 0.55, respectively; bi is less than 1). Some covered spring barley varieties were considered to be the best in eight environments with stable and high 1000 grain weight (‘Austris’, ‘Idumeja’), test weight (‘Gāte’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Austris’), lodging resistance (‘Austris’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Didzis’), resistance to Pyrenophora teres (‘Didzis’, ‘Saule PR’) and Blumeria graminis (‘Saule PR’, ‘Didzis’). Both hull-less barley varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’ were distinguished for high crude protein and ß-glucan content.

Purpose. To estimate the ecological plasticity of common millet yield under conditions of Steppe, Forest-Steppe and Forest of Ukraine. Methods. Mathematical and statistical: determination of stability and plasticity by Eberhart & Russell method, correlation analysis. Results. As a result of correlation analysis of millet cultivated areas during the period of 2011?2020, it was revealed that cultivated areas in Ukraine depend on the world ones (r = 0.34). It was determined that a high level of common millet yield was obtained in the forest-steppe zone, namely in Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, Sumy and Kharkiv regions (2.20?2.51 t/ha). Quite high rates of yield were obtained in Vinnytsia, Kyiv (Forest-Steppe zone) and Kirovohrad (Steppe zone) regions (1.86?2.02 t/ha). Low yield over 10 years was noted in Rivne, Zhytomyr and Volyn regions, which belong to the Forrest zone (1.09?1.34 t/ha). It is shown that during 2011?2015 high variability of millet yield was observed in Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia and Volyn regions. The coefficient of variation was 42.0?71.3%. During 2016?2020 significant variation was noted in Donetsk, Volyn and Odesa regions. The coefficient of variation was 31.8?43.9%. In the period from 2016 to 2020, high plasticity of the yield trait was noted in Vinnitsa, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Sumy and Khmelnitsky regions. During 2016?2020 high plasticity trait of millet yield was in Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy and Poltava regions. Conclusions. According to the results of the studies, it was found that with a reduction in the area under millet in the world, the volume of its production in Ukraine increases. It was determined that the hig?hest yield of millet was obtained in the Forest-Steppe zone during the years of observation. Untangling the genetic architecture of grain yield (GY) and yield stability is an important determining factor to optimize genomics-assisted selection strategies in wheat. We conducted in-depth investigation on the above using a large set of advanced bread wheat lines (4,302), which were genotyped with genotyping-by-sequencing markers and phenotyped under contrasting (irrigated and stress) environments. Haplotypes-based genome-wide-association study (GWAS) identified 58 associations with GY and 15 with superiority index Pi (measure of stability). Sixteen associations with GY were “environment-specific” with two on chromosomes 3B and 6B with the large effects and 8 associations were consistent across environments and trials. For Pi, 8 associations were from chromosomes 4B and 7B, indicating ‘hot spot’ regions for stability. Epistatic interactions contributed to an additional 5–9% variation on average. We further explored whether integrating consistent and robust associations identified in GWAS as fixed effects in prediction models improves prediction accuracy. For GY, the model accounting for the haplotype-based GWAS loci as fixed effects led to up to 9–10% increase in prediction accuracy, whereas for Pi this approach did not provide any advantage. This is the first report of integrating genetic architecture of GY and yield stability into prediction models in wheat.

The inconsistent prevalence of abiotic stress in most of the agroecosystems can be addressed through deployment of plant material with stress adaptive plasticity. The present study explores water stress induced plasticity for early root-shoot development, proline induction and cell membrane injury in 57 accessions of Aegilops tauschii (DD-genome) and 26 accessions of Triticum dicoccoides (AABB-genome) along with durum and bread wheat cultivars. Thirty three Ae. tauschii accessions and 18 T. dicoccoides accessions showed an increase in root dry weight (ranging from 1.8 to 294.75%) under water stress. Shoot parameters- length and biomass, by and large were suppressed by water stress, but genotypes with stress adaptive plasticity leading to improvement of shoot traits (e.g., Ae tauschii accession 14191 and T. dicoccoides accession 7130) could be identified. Water stress induced active responses, rather than passive repartitioning of biomass was indicated by better shoot growth in seedlings of genotypes with enhanced root growth under stress. Membrane injury seemed to work as a trigger to activate water stress adaptive cellular machinery and was found positively correlated with several root-shoot based adaptive responses in seedlings. Stress induced proline accumulation in leaf tissue showed marked inter- and intra-specific genetic variation but hardly any association with stress adaptive plasticity. Genotypic variation for early stage plasticity traits viz., change in root dry weight, shoot length, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight and membrane injury positively correlated with grain weight based stress tolerance index (r = 0.267, r = 0.404, r = 0.299, r = 0.526, and r = 0.359, respectively). In another such trend, adaptive seedling plasticity correlated positively with resistance to early flowering under stress (r = 0.372 with membrane injury, r = 0.286 with change in root length, r = 0.352 with change in shoot length, r = 0.268 with change in shoot dry weight). Overall, Ae. tauschii accessions 9816, 14109, 14128, and T. dicoccoides accessions 5259 and 7130 were identified as potential donors of stress adaptive plasticity. The prospect of the study for molecular marker tagging, cloning of plasticity genes and creation of elite synthetic hexaploid donors is discussed.

Мета. Порівняльна оцінка за врожайністю та адаптивністю сортів ячменю ярого Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН різних років реєстрації. Методи. Дослідження проведені в Миронівському інституті пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН у 2013–2017 рр. відповідно до загальноприйнятих методик. Об’єкт досліджень – 19 сортів ячменю ярого миронівської селекції зареєстрованих в Україні за період 1995–2017 рр. Для характеристики взаємодії генотип–середовище та диференціації сортів за врожайністю і стабільністю використали низку найбільш поширених підходів: S. A. Eberhart, W. A. Russel (1966); G. Wricke (1962); C. S. Lin, M. R. Binns (1988); M. Huehn (1990); А. В. Кильчевский, Л. В. Хотылёва (1985); В. В. Хангильдин, Н. А. Литвиненко (1981); J. L. Purchase та ін. (2000); AMMI; GGE biplot. Результати. Частка умов року досліджень у загальній варіації становила 83,40%. Достовірні, але суттєво нижчі значення мали генотип – 10,65% та взаємодія генотип–середовище – 5,95%. Перші дві головні компоненти GGE biplot пояснювали дещо більшу частку взаємодії генотип–середовище (85,58%) порівняно з AMMI моделлю (80,9%). Кореляційний аналіз виявив, що середня врожайність (Mean) мала вищесередній зв’язок як з максимальним (Max) (r = 0,69), так і мінімальним (Mіn) (r = 0,72) її значеннями. Сильну позитивну кореляцію Mean виявлено з парамет­рами: СЦГі (r = 0,88), Hom (r = 0,86), Sc (r = 0,82). Дуже сильний негативний зв’язок Mean відзначено з Pi (r = -0,96). Для Max середній негативний зв’язок спостерігали лише з Pi (r = -0,60). Mіn сильно корелювала з Sc (r = 0,96), СЦГі (r = 0,87), Hom (r = 0,84). Негативну сильну кореляцію відзначено Min з Sgi (r = -0,86). Між деякими показниками виявлено зв’язок від функціонального позитивного: δ2CAЗi і Кgi (r = 1,00), Wi і Lgi (r = 0,98), СЦГі і Hom (r = 0,98), СЦГі і Sc (r = 0,96), S2di і Wi (r = 0,96), Wi і ASV (r = 0,94), Sc і Hom (r = 0,94), δ2CAЗi і bi (r = 0,93), S2di і ASV (r = 0,93) до сильного негативного: Sgi іСЦГі (r = -0,94), Sgi і Sc(r = -0,92), Sgi і Hom (r = -0,91), Pi і СЦГі (r = -0,83), Pi і Sc (r = -0,80), Pi і Hom (r = -0,79). Висновки. Системна порівняльна оцінка статистичними і графічними підходами свідчить, що внесені до Державного реєстру сортів рослин, придатних для поширення в Україні у 2016–2017 рр. сорти ячменю ярого ‘Віраж’, ‘Талісман Миронівський’, ‘МІП Мирний’, ‘МІП Салют’, ‘МІП Сотник’, ‘МІП Азарт’, ‘МІП Богун’ переважають створені на попередніх етапах селекційної роботи сорти як за продуктивним, так і адаптивним потенціалом.

The article gives analysis of practical value of soybean varieties according to productivity and ecological plasticity in different climatic provinces of Ukraine. Ecological estimation of soybean varieties by the methodology of Eberhart and Rassel has been made. This estimation helped to determine variety plasticity and potential to adaptability. It has been established that varieties Almaz and Diona were the best according to the results of ecological research of varieties. The most favourable regions for cultivation of up-to-date soybean varieties have been chosen. Variety Almaz has been defined as the most intensive and plastic soybean variety (average yield during research years was 2.66–2.93 t/hа). Varieties Antratsit and Ametist also have shown high plasticity. The article gives rank estimation of practical value of soybean varieties on the basis of grain productivity.It has been established that all examined varieties had high economic value – coefficient of agronomic stability is higher than 70%.Variety Almaz has the greatest selective value according to homeostatic character. Almaz is the most intensive variety with maximal plasticity grown in Poltava region.Varieties with high indices of adaptability and plasticity which are very valuable for selection and practical use have been singled out.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of agronomic and grain quality traits of 11 spring barley varieties from the Latvian breeding programme grown in two locations for four years. The study was carried out on 11 Latvian spring barley varieties: nine covered varieties ‘Abava’, ‘Ansis’, ‘Austris’, ‘Didzis’, ‘Gāte’, ‘Idumeja’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Kristaps’, and ‘Saule PR’ and two hull-less varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’. Plants of the varieties were grown in field trials of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, at two sites (Priekuïi and Stende) during 2014–2017. Varieties ‘Didzis’, ‘Jumara’, and ‘Ansis’ yielded significantly above the grand mean in eight environments (5.70 t·ha⁻¹; LSD = 0.476 t·ha⁻¹). ‘Didzis’ showed relatively high dynamic yield stability and broad adaptability to all environments (bᵢ = 0.90; b = 1; s²d = 0.07). Grain yield for varieties ‘Jumara’ and ‘Ansis’ showed specific adaptability to unfavourable environments (bᵢ = 0.48 and 0.55, respectively; bᵢ < 1). Some covered spring barley varieties were considered to be the best in eight environments with stable and high 1000 grain weight (‘Austris’, ‘Idumeja’), test weight (‘Gāte’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Austris’), lodging resistance (‘Austris’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Didzis’), resistance to Pyrenophora teres (‘Didzis’, ‘Saule PR’) and Blumeria graminis (‘Saule PR’, ‘Didzis’). Both hull-less barley varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’ were distinguished for high crude protein and ß-glucan content.

The model, Yᵢⱼ = μ₁ + β₁Iⱼ + δᵢⱼ, defines stability parameters that may be used to describe the performance of a variety over a series of environments. Yᵢⱼ is the variety mean of the iᵗʰ variety at the jₜₕ environment, µ₁ is the iᵗʰ variety mean over all environments, β₁ is the regression coefficient that measures the response of the iᵗʰ variety to varying environments, δᵢⱼ is the deviation from regression of the iᵗʰ variety at the jᵗʰ environment, and Iⱼ is the environmental index. The data from two single-cross diallels and a set of 3-way crosses were examined to see whether genetic differences could be detected. Genetic differences among lines were indicated for the regression of the lines on the environmental index with no evidence of nonadditive gene action. The estimates of the squared deviations from regression for many hybrids were near zero, whereas extremely large estimates were obtained for other hybrids.

Purpose. To analyze lines of competitive testing of soft spring wheat in terms of ecological plasticity and stability using statistical methods of analysis and identify lines with high stability of grain yield.Methods. The studies were carried out during 2018–2020, on the basis of the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat NAAS of Ukraine. When considering the results obtained, generally accepted methods of genetic and statistical analysis were used.Results. Evaluation of breeding material in different years makes it possible to obtain information about the characteristics of the reaction of genotypes to changes in environmental conditions. As a result of the studies, it was found that the lines Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0.59), Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0.44), Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0.22) were of high plasticity. Calculations of ecological stability indicate that lines are considered stable, the variance of stability is zero or close to zero. From a practical point of view, lines with a combined manifestation of high ecological plasticity and stability are considered valuable. This was the line Erythro­spermum 15-32 (bi = 0.44; S2di = 0.01) that indicates its low reaction rate and the ability to provide a consistently high level of yield under any growing conditions. The most valuable are the genotypes that combine a low level of the coefficient of variation, high homeostaticity and bree­ding value, which include the lines Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206.42, Sc = 4.11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98.41, Sc = 3.91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78.57, Sc = 3.76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54.84, Sc = 3.75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54.60, Sc = 4.17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35.60, Sc = 3.78), Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46.66, Sc = 3.58).Conclusions. The evaluation of breeding material is of great importance when creating new high-performance varieties with adaptive potential. The method for assessing ecological plasticity and variants of its stability made it possible to differentiate wheat lines of soft spring competitive testing by their response to changes in gro­wing conditions. For a more optimal selection of breeding material in terms of ecological plasticity and stability, breeding programs should take into account ranked estimates of genotypes. | Мета. Використовуючи статистичні методи, проаналізувати за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності лінії конкурсного випробування пшениці м’якої ярої і виявити серед них такі, що вирізняються високою стабільністю врожайності зерна.Методи. Дослідження проводили протягом 2018–2020 рр. на базі Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. У процесі оброблення отриманих результатів послуговувалися загально­прийнятими методами генетико-статистичного аналізу.Результати. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу в різні роки дає змогу отримати інформацію щодо особливостей реакції генотипів на зміну екологічних умов. У результаті проведених досліджень встановлено, що високопластичними є лінії Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0,59), Erythrospermum 15-32  (bi = 0,44) і Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0,22). За розрахунками, екологічно стабільними вважають лінії, варіанса стабільності яких дорівнює нулю (S2di = 0,00) або близька до нуля (S2di = 0,01). З погляду практичності цінними є лінії із сукупним проявом високої екологічної пластичності та стабільності, а саме: Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0,44; S2di = 0,01), що має низьку норму реакції та може забезпечувати незмінно високий рівень врожайності за будь-яких умов вирощування. Найціннішими є генотипи, що поєднують у собі низький рівень коефіцієнта варіації (CV ≤ 10,0%), високу гомеостатичність і селекційну цінність. Серед них – лінії Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206,42, Sc = 4,11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98,41, Sc = 3,91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78,57, Sc = 3,76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54,84, Sc = 3,75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54,60, Sc = 4,17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35,60, Sc = 3,78) і Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46,66, Sc = 3,58).Висновки. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу має важливе значення для створення нових високопродуктивних сортів з адаптивним потенціалом. Метод оцінки екологічної пластичності та варіанси її стабільності дав змогу диференціювати лінії пшениці м’якої ярої конкурсного випробування за реакцією на зміну умов вирощування. Для оптимальнішого відбору селекційного матеріалу за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності у селекційних програмах слід враховувати ранжовані оцінки генотипів.

Plants respond to environmental conditions not only by plastic changes to their own development and physiology, but also by altering the phenotypes expressed by their offspring. This transgenerational plasticity was initially considered to entail only negative effects of stressful parental environments, such as production of smaller seeds by resource- or temperature-stressed parent plants, and was therefore viewed as environmental noise. Recent evolutionary ecology studies have shown that in some cases, these inherited environmental effects can include specific growth adjustments that are functionally adaptive to the parental conditions that induced them, which can range from contrasting states of controlled laboratory environments to the complex habitat variation encountered by natural plant populations. Preliminary findings suggest that adaptive transgenerational effects can be transmitted by means of diverse mechanisms including changes to seed provisioning and biochemistry, and epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation that can persist across multiple generations. These non-genetically inherited adaptations can influence the ecological breadth and evolutionary dynamics of plant taxa and promote the spread of invasive plants. Interdisciplinary studies that join mechanistic and evolutionary ecology approaches will be an important source of future insights.

Мета. Визначити біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного у різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого. Методи. У процесі досліджень використовували лабораторний, розрахунковий і статистичний методи, для підготовки висновків – аналізу та синтезу. Результати. За результатами лабораторних досліджень визначили біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного в різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого типу розвитку, а саме: вміст олії, «сирого протеїну» та глюкозинолатів. Значний вплив на показники якості насіння мають метеорологічні умови впродовж вегетаційного періоду рослин відповідної ґрунтово-кліматичної зони. Встановлено, що у 2022 р. біохімічні показники насіння ріпаку озимого були вищими ніж у 2020 р. Зростання урожайності на 1,6 т/га у зоні Степу, 1,1 т/га – Лісостепу, 1,4 т/га – Полісся забезпечило підвищення вмісту олії на 2,4, 6,6 та 6,7% відповідно. Збори олії з гектара збільшилися на 0,74 т/га у зонах Степу та Полісся, 0,62 т/га – Лісостепу.  У 2022 р., порівнюючи з 2020, спостерігали зниження показника «сирого протеїну»: на 3,1% у зоні Степу, 5,8% – Лісостепу та 5,0% – Полісся. На вміст глюкозинолатів впливали умови років досліджень у відповідних ґрунтово-кліматичних зонах. Степ і Лісостеп мали ідентичні показники – 0,7%, Полісся – 0,8%, тоді як у 2021 р. для зони Степу та Полісся вміст глюкозинолатів у насінні ріпаку був на 0,8 та 0,9% більшим, порівнюючи з показниками, отриманими в інші роки досліджень. Висновки. Встановлено, що в середньому за 2020–2022 рр. загальний вміст олії в насінні ріпаку становив 46,2% (Степ), 47,5% (Лісостеп) і 47,8% (Полісся); вміст «сирого протеїну» – 19,6% (Степ), 18,4% (Лісостеп) і 17,9% (Полісся); вміст глюкозинолатів – 0,7% (Степ та Лісостеп) і 0,8% (Полісся). Збір олії в зоні Степу мав показник 1,31 т/га, Лісостепу – 1,16 т/га, Полісся – 1,33 т/га. Збір білка з гектара становив 0,54 т/га для Степу, 0,44 т/га – Лісостепу та 0,48 т/га – Полісся. Умови вирощування за роки досліджень у відповідній зоні впливають на формування біохімічних показників насіння ріпаку озимого.

Accounting for co-products of vegetable oil production is essential in reviewing the sustainability of biodiesel production, especially since oil crops produce valuable protein-rich co-products in different quantities and qualities. Two accounting methods, allocation on the basis of energy content and system expansion, are compared. Significant differences in results exist between the methods where system expansion is to be preferred because it can take actual use of co-products into account. Results are very sensitive to the choices made in system expansion. Differences can be large, especially between a system expansion where primarily the use of co-products of the oil crops is taken into account and an expansion that also includes direct oil exchange of the vegetable oil used for biodiesel for the marginal oil in the market.

In this study, the seeds of open-pollinated winter rapeseed cultivars, hybrid winter rapeseed cultivars, open-pollinated spring rapeseed cultivars and hybrid spring rapeseed cultivars were investigated. The physical, optical, mechanical, geometric and image texture properties of rapeseeds were compared. Statistical models were developed based on the analyzed parameters to discriminate between seed groups. Most parameters effectively discriminated between cultivars of winter and spring rapeseed, including true density, porosity, L*, a*, b*, and spectral values at 400 nm, 470 nm, 500–530 nm, 560–620 nm, 640–650 nm and 690 nm. Four homogeneous groups were identified based on linear dimensions: F (surface area), S (width) and shape factors W6 (circularity ratio), Rb (Blair-Bliss coefficient) and W13 (roundness). No statistically significant differences in the mean values of hardness or area under the force-displacement graph were observed between seed groups. The model developed based on image texture variables from channel Y (luminance) was characterized by the highest discrimination accuracy of 82–87%. The experimental groups were classified with 89–92% accuracy in the model combining the best variables from each group of physical parameters. Total classification accuracy in neural networks reached 75% for a validation set comprising geometric properties and 91–92% for a validation set containing physical characteristics.

This paper aims to assess and compare the sustainability of rapeseed and sunflower crop cultivation for energy purposes in Italy, by considering environmental and economic performances at the farm level. The analysis focused on twelve representative farming units that were extracted from a sample of 396 farms by applying a cluster analysis. Using an Attributional Life Cycle Assessment method, the values of midpoint environmental impact categories and the carbon footprint of the twelve farms were assessed. The economic performance of rapeseed and sunflower per 1 Mg of biomass cultivation was measured in terms of the value added. In order to combine an environmental and economic assessment, the eco-efficiency ratio was applied to measure the value added per Mg of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere. Three rapeseed farms had the lowest GHG emissions of the whole sample. Practices of intensive farming with high fertilization and mechanization (fertilizer and machinery production and usage) are known to have a negative environmental impact. When the level of productivity is low, the impact is still higher. Regarding the eco-efficiency ratio, of the twelve representative farming units, results showed again that the three rapeseed farms had the highest eco-efficiency ratio. Summarizing both perspectives, findings from the eco-efficiency analysis gave a premium to rapeseed over sunflower crop in terms of the economic value added per kg of GHGs emitted into the atmosphere. The study findings presented a complex picture of the crops and of agricultural practices of each farm that underlines the variability and sensitivity of results in specific case studies. Indeed, the complexity of the matter, including the implications of bioenergy crops for energy and food safety beyond the environmental and economic assessment of the cultivation phase, cannot be ignored. Further studies are needed to apply a multiple perspective to the joint analysis of the sustainability of agricultural processes related to first generation bioenergy crops.

Мета. Визначити біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного у різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого.Методи. У процесі досліджень використовували лабораторний, розрахунковий і статистичний методи, для підготовки висновків – аналізу та синтезу.Результати. За результатами лабораторних досліджень визначили біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного в різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого типу розвитку, а саме: вміст олії, «сирого протеїну» та глюкозинолатів. Значний вплив на показники якості насіння мають метеорологічні умови впродовж вегетаційного періоду рослин відповідної ґрунтово-кліматичної зони. Встановлено, що у 2022 р. біохімічні показники насіння ріпаку озимого були вищими ніж у 2020 р. Зростання урожайності на 1,6 т/га у зоні Степу, 1,1 т/га – Лісостепу, 1,4 т/га – Полісся забезпечило підвищення вмісту олії на 2,4, 6,6 та 6,7% відповідно. Збори олії з гектара збільшилися на 0,74 т/га у зонах Степу та Полісся, 0,62 т/га – Лісостепу.  У 2022 р., порівнюючи з 2020, спостерігали зниження показника «сирого протеїну»: на 3,1% у зоні Степу, 5,8% – Лісостепу та 5,0% – Полісся. На вміст глюкозинолатів впливали умови років досліджень у відповідних ґрунтово-кліматичних зонах. Степ і Лісостеп мали ідентичні показники – 0,7%, Полісся – 0,8%, тоді як у 2021 р. для зони Степу та Полісся вміст глюкозинолатів у насінні ріпаку був на 0,8 та 0,9% більшим, порівнюючи з показниками, отриманими в інші роки досліджень.Висновки. Встановлено, що в середньому за 2020–2022 рр. загальний вміст олії в насінні ріпаку становив 46,2% (Степ), 47,5% (Лісостеп) і 47,8% (Полісся); вміст «сирого протеїну» – 19,6% (Степ), 18,4% (Лісостеп) і 17,9% (Полісся); вміст глюкозинолатів – 0,7% (Степ та Лісостеп) і 0,8% (Полісся). Збір олії в зоні Степу мав показник 1,31 т/га, Лісостепу – 1,16 т/га, Полісся – 1,33 т/га. Збір білка з гектара становив 0,54 т/га для Степу, 0,44 т/га – Лісостепу та 0,48 т/га – Полісся. Умови вирощування за роки досліджень у відповідній зоні впливають на формування біохімічних показників насіння ріпаку озимого. | Purpose. To determine the biochemical indicators of seed quality of winter rape varieties grown under different conditions.Methods. During the research, the following methods were used: laboratory, calculation and statistical, to prepare conclusions – analysis and synthesis.Results. According to the results of laboratory studies, biochemical indicators of the quality of seeds of winter rape varieties, grown in different conditions, were established, namely: the content of oil, “crude protein” and glucosinolates. Meteorological conditions during the vegetation period of plants of the corresponding soil and climate zone have a significant influence on the quality indicators of seeds. Based on the results of the research, it was established that in 2022, compared to 2020, the biochemical indicators of winter rapeseed were higher. The increase in yield by 1.6 t/ha in the Steppe zone, 1.1 t/ha – Forest-Steppe, 1.4 t/ha – Polissia ensured an increase in oil content by 2.4% – Steppe, 6.6% – Forest-Steppe, 6.7% – Polissia and oil collection per hectare by 0.74 t/ha – Steppe and Polissia, 0.62 t/ha – Forest-Steppe. For the content of “crude protein”, a decrease in the index was observed, namely: by 3.1% in the Steppe zone, 5.8% in the Forest-Steppe and 5.0% in the Polissia in 2022 compared to 2020. Meteorological conditions of the research years in the corresponding soil and climatic zones had an influence on the content of glucosinolates. For the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones, the indicators were identical and amounted to 0.7%, 0.8% (Polissia), while in 2021, for the Steppe and Polissia zones, the content of glucosinolates in rapeseed was 0.8% and 0.9% more, compared to the indicators obtained in other years of research.Conclusions. It was established that, on average, for 2020–2022, the total oil content in seeds of rape was 46.2% – Steppe, 47.5% – Forest-Steppe, 47.8% – Polissia; “crude protein” content – 19.6% – Steppe, 18.4% – Forest-Steppe, 17.9% – Polissia; the content of glucosinolates was 0.7% in the Steppe and Forest-steppe zones, 0.8% in the Polissia; oil collection in the Steppe zone 1.31 t/ha, Forest-Steppe – 1.16 t/ha, Polissia – 1.33 t/ha; protein collection per hectare is 0.54 t/ha in Steppe, 0.44 t/ha in Forest-Steppe and 0.48% in Polissia. Growing conditions over the years of research in the corresponding zone affect the formation of biochemical indicators of winter rapeseed.

Мета. Визначити особливості прояву комбінаційної здатності та характеру успадкування пов’язаних з урожайністю ознак ячменю озимого й виділити генетичні джерела та перспективні гібридні комбінації для подальшої селекційної роботи в умовах Лісостепу України. Методи. Дослідження проводили у 2018/19 і 2021/22 рр. у Миронівському інституті пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. Відповідно до загальноприйнятих методик у топкросних гібридів ячменю озимого визначали ступінь фенотипового домінування, істинний гетерозис та ефекти загальної комбінаційної здатності за основними елементами структури врожайності. Результати. Установлено варіабельність рівня прояву досліджених ознак батьківських компонентів і гібридів у різні роки. За показником ступеня фенотипового домінування виявлено мінливість характеру успадкування залежно від ознак, гібридних комбінацій та умов вирощування. Виділено гібридні комбінації з позитивним наддомінуванням і домінуванням за окремими елементами структури врожайності, зокрема продуктивністю рослини: ‘Scarpia’ / ‘МІП Дарій’, ‘Scarpia’ / ‘МІП Корсар’, ‘Абориген’ / ‘МІП Корсар’, ‘Titus’ / ‘МІП Статус’, ‘МІП Янус’ / ‘МІП Статус’, ‘Titus’ / ‘Паладін Миронівський’, ‘Maybrit’ / ‘Паладін Миронівський’, ‘МІП Янус’ / ‘Паладін Миронівський’. Виокремлено сорти з підвищеними ефектами загальної комбінаційної здатності, пов’язаних з урожайністю ознак за різних умов вирощування: продуктивна кущистість – ‘Scarpia’, ‘МІП Дарій’; кількість зерен у колосі – ‘МІП Янус’, ‘МІП Гладіатор’, ‘МІП Статус’; маса 1000 зерен – ‘Titus’, ‘МІП Корсар’, ‘МІП Статус’; маса зерен із рослини – ‘МІП Янус’, ‘МІП Статус’, ‘МІП Дарій’. Висновки. Виділені гібридні комбінації з позитивним наддомінуванням та домінуванням становлять практичну цінність для подальшої селекції на збільшення продуктивності рослини загалом і окремих елементів її структури. Сорти з підвищеними ефектами загальної комбінаційної здатності є цінними генетичними джерелами для залучення у схрещування з метою поліпшення відповідних ознак.

A total of 310 Barley accessions collected from ICARDA, Lebanon and grown in Indian condition at ICARDA-IRP (India Research Platform), Amlaha, (M.P.) were analyzed for morphological and genetic variability using nine agro-morphological traits i.e. Plant height (cm), number oftillers per plant, daysto heading, number of ear headsper pant, length ofear (cm), number of spikelets per earhead, number of grains per earhead, yield per plant (g), and 1000-grain weight (g). The highest coefficient of variation as a result of highest diversity among the genotypes were found for grains per earhead (37.5%), spikelets per earhead (37.5%), yield per plant (35.3%), tillers per plant (31.3%) and earhead per plant (31.2%). However, ear length (16.9%), days to heading (15.4%), 1000-grain weight (13.5%) and plant height (11.2%) have conributued less to diversity with lower cofficient of variation. In cluster analysis, all the characters were used to construct a distance matrix using the Euclidian coefficient, and used to generate dendrogram showing similarity among all the genotypes, distance coefficient ranged between 0 and 200 which reveal the genetic diversity among genotypes. These exotic accessions evaluated can be further used for primary or secondary introduction in Indian breeding program.

Eighteen hybrids generated from crossing six lines with three testers were studied along with their parents for combining ability and gene action involved in the expression of characters in barley to identify suitable parents and desirable hybrid combinations. Observations were recorded for days to ear emergence, days to maturity, the number of productive tillers per plant, ear length (cm.), grains per spike, biological yield per plant (g.), harvest index (%), 1000-grain weight and grain yield per plant (g.). The mean squares for General Combining Ability (GCA) and Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effects were found highly significant for all the traits studied. Among the parents, tester NDB-1173 and lines RD-2909, RD-2899 and RD-2768 were good general combiners for grain yield and its component traits. On the basis of SCA effects, RD-2909 x NDB-943, NDB-1618 x NDB-1173, RD-2768 x NDB-3, HUB-240 x NDB-1173 and RD-2899 x NDB-943 for grain yield were observed as most promising crosses.

Background. Naked barley is a promising food crop. To enhance its production, active breeding is required to create productive varieties. The purpose of this study was to test the STS-marker for the Nud1 gene controlling the hulled phenotype, and use it for the production of naked barley hybrids. Materials and methods. Genotyping of 112 F2 hybrids obtained by crossing the naked black variety ‘Jet’ and the hulled white variety ‘Elf’ was carried out using wF2 and kR1, or tR2 primers in the regular PCR mode to amplify the recessive or dominant alleles of the Nud1 gene, respectively, and also in the multiplex PCR mode, which allows simultaneous amplification of both dominant and recessive alleles of the Nud1 gene. The genotyping data were compared with those on phenotypes of hybrids. Results and discussion. The possibility of using multiplex PCR with a set of primers wF2, kR1, and tR2 for identifying dominant and recessive alleles of the Nud1 gene in hybrid material has been demonstrated. However, while the observed number of hybrids homozygous for the recessive allele nud1 almost completely corresponded to their expected number, the clear predominance of homozygotes for the dominant allele Nud1 and the lack of heterozygotes compared to the expected number of hybrids of these groups indicates erroneous identification of some heterozygotes as dominant homozygotes, which must be taken into account during selection of hulled barleys by genotyping. Conclusions. The STS-marker amplified by primers wF2, kR1, and tR2, can be used to select recessive homozygotes nud1nud1 from hybrid populations, however, additional analysis is required for a more reliable identification of heterozygotes and homozygotes for the dominant allele of the Nud1 gene.

Мета. Виявити особливості успадкування кількості зерен у колосі, схрещуючи різні за походженням, напрямами використання і різновидностями сорти ячменю ярого, та виокремити ефективні генетичні джерела для поліпшення цієї ознаки. Методи. Дослідження проводили в Миронівському інституті пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН у 2019 і 2020 рр. В F1 ячменю ярого двох діалельних схем схрещування за кількістю зерен у колосі визначили ступінь фенотипового домінування, параметри генетичної варіації та комбінаційну здатність. Результати. За показником ступеня фенотипового домінування виявлено всі можливі типи успадкування кількості зерен у колосі. У низки комбінацій схрещування встановлено зміну типу успадкування залежно від умов року. Найбільшу кількість комбінацій із наддомінуванням в обох роках відмічено у комбінаціях з плівчастим остистим сортом ‘Авгур’ та безостим сортом ‘Козир’. За параметрами генетичної варіації у схрещуваннях пивоварних сортів (плівчастих остистих) виявлено відповідність адитивно-домінантній моделі, наддомінування і домінування у локусах, а також односпрямованість домінування на збільшення ознаки, зумовлене домінантними ефектами. У схрещуваннях сортів різних ботанічних різновидностей виявлено зміну дії генів у різні роки. А саме: адитивно-домінантної системи – комплементарним епістазом, неповного домінування – наддомінуванням, односпрямованості домінування на збільшення ознаки – різноспрямованістю. Виділено генетичні джерела підвищеної загальної комбінаційної здатності, зокрема плівчасті остисті сорти пивоварного напряму ‘Quench’ і ‘Авгур’, голозерний та безостий сорти ‘CDC Rattan’ і ‘Козир’ відповідно. На основі констант специфічної комбінаційної здатності визначено найбільш перспективні комбінації для подальшої селекційної роботи. Висновки. Виявлені особливості успадкування кількості зерен у колосі дають змогу оптимально комбінувати батьківські компоненти схрещувань і здійснювати цілеспрямований добір на збільшення ознаки у процесі створення ботанічних різновидностей сортів ячменю ярого різних напрямів використання.

The international collections of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) hosted by 11 CGIAR Centers are important components of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s global system of conservation and use of PGRFA. They also play an important supportive role in realizing Target 2.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals. This paper analyzes CGIAR genebanks’ trends in acquiring and distributing PGRFA over the last 35 years, with a particular focus on the last decade. The paper highlights a number of factors influencing the Centers’ acquisition of new PGRFA to include in the international collections, including increased capacity to analyze gaps in those collections and precisely target new collecting missions, availability of financial resources, and the state of international and national access and benefit-sharing laws and phytosanitary regulations. Factors contributing to Centers’ distributions of PGRFA included the extent of accession-level information, users’ capacity to identify the materials they want, and policies. The genebanks’ rates of both acquisition and distribution increased over the last decade. The paper ends on a cautionary note concerning the potential of unresolved tensions regarding access and benefit sharing and digital genomic sequence information to undermine international cooperation to conserve and use PGRFA.

Purpose. To determine the peculiarities of the manifestation of combining ability and the mode of inheritance of yield-related traits in winter barley and to identify genetic sources and promising hybrid combinations for further breeding efforts under conditions of Ukrainian Forest-steppe. Methods. The research was conducted in 2018/19 and 2021/22 at the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of NAAS of Ukraine. In accordance with generally accepted methods, the degree of phenotypic dominance, heterobeltiosis and effects of general combining ability in the top-cross hybrids of winter barley for key yield components were determined. Results. The variability of the manifestation level of the studied traits in parental components and hybrids in different years were established. According to the indicator of the degree of phenotypic dominance, the variability of the character of inheritance was revealed depending on the traits, hybrid combinations and growing conditions. Hybrid combinations with positive overdominance and dominance of individual yield components were highlighted. In particular, according to plant productivity these combination are: ‘Scarpia’ / ‘MIP Darii’, ‘Scarpia’ / ‘MIP Korsar’, ‘Aborygen’ / ‘MIP Corsar’, ‘Titus’ / ‘MIP Status’, ‘MIP Yanus’ / ‘MIP Status’, ‘Titus’ / ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’, ‘Maybrit’ / ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’ ‘MIP Yanus’ / ‘Paladin Myronivskyi’. The varieties with increased effects of general combining ability for yield-related traits under different growing conditions were distinguished. As follows: productive tillering – ‘Scarpia’, ‘MIP Darii’; grain number per ear – ‘MIP Yanus’, ‘MIP Hladiator’, ‘MIP Status’; 1000 grain weight – ‘Titus’, ‘MIP Korsar’, ‘MIP Status’; grain weight per plant – ‘MIP Yanus’, ‘MIP Status’, ‘MIP Darii’. Conclusions. Selected hybrid combinations with positive overdominance and dominance are of practical value for further breeding to increase individual components and plant productivity in general. The varieties with increased effects of general combining ability are valuable genetic sources for involvement in crossing for improving the certain traits. | Мета. Purpose. To reveal the peculiarities of inheritance of kernel number per spike in crosses of spring barley cultivars of different origin, purpose of use and botanical varieties, as well as to distinguish effective genetic sources for impro­ving the trait.Methods. The study was carried out at the M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat of National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine in 2019 and 2020. In F1 of spring barley in two diallel crossing schemes the degree of phenotypic dominance, parameters of genetic variation, and combining ability for kernel number per spike were determined. Results. According to the indicator of the degree of phenotypic dominance, all possible types of inheritance of kernel number per spike were identified. In a number of crossing compositions, a change in the type of inheritance depending on the conditions of the year was revealed. Most combinations with overdominance in both years were noted in crossings of the covered awned cultivar ‘Avgur’, as well as the covered awnless cultivar ‘Kozyr’. According to the parameters of genetic variation in crosses of malting varieties (covered awned), correspondence of the additive-dominant model, overdominance and dominance in loci, as well as unidirectional dominance to increasing of the trait caused by dominant effects were revealed. When crossing cultivars of different varieties, a change in gene action in different years was found. In particular, additive-dominant system changed to complementary epistasis, incomplete dominance to overdominance, unidirectional dominance to increa­sing of the trait to multidirectional dominance. The genetic sources of increased general combining ability were identified, as follows: covered awned malting cultivars ‘Quench’ and ‘Avgur’, the naked awned cultivar ‘CDC Rattan’, as well as the covered awnless cultivar ‘Kozyr’. Based on the constants of specific combining ability, the most promising crossing combinations for further breeding efforts were determined.Conclusions. The identified peculiarities of the inheritance of kernel number per spike make it possible to optimally combine parental components of crossings and carry out directional selection to increase the trait when developing spring barley cultivars for different use and different botanical varieties. | Мета. Виявлені особливості успадкування кількості зерен у колосі дають змогу оптимально комбінувати батьківські компоненти схрещувань і здійснювати цілеспрямований добір на збільшення ознаки у процесі створення ботанічних різновидностей сортів ячменю ярого різних напрямів використання.

The paper summarizes the experimental data from field and laboratory experiments on the study of the collection material of hull-less barley from ICARDA (Hordeum vulgare L.) on saline soils of the Kyzylorda region. The influence of the type of ripening of the variety and weather conditions of vegetation on the formation and variability of the grain yield of spring hull-less barley is shown. Traits less affected by external factors, such as plant height, spike length, number of spikelets per spike, and number of productive spikes per 1 m2, are determined. It has been established that during the selection, stabilization on such traits occurs in early generations, which increases the efficiency of selection of adaptive varieties. At the present stage, using in hybridization the best hull-less forms ICNBF8-611/Aths, DeirAlla106/Strain205//Rhn-03/3/BF891M-582, Atahualpa/4/Avt/Attiki//Aths/3/Giza121/Pue, Atahualpa/4/Harrington/3/WI2291/Roho//WI2269, and HIGO/LINO with local recognized varieties, 20 hybrid populations have been obtained, and 150 lines selected from them, identified that donors of valuable traits are of particular interest for creating productive cereal varieties.

Genebanks hold comprehensive collections of cultivars, landraces and crop wild relatives of all major food crops, but their detailed characterization has so far been limited to sparse core sets. The analysis of genome-wide genotyping-by-sequencing data for almost all barley accessions of the German ex situ genebank provides insights into the global population structure of domesticated barley and points out redundancies and coverage gaps in one of the world’s major genebanks. Our large sample size and dense marker data afford great power for genome-wide association scans. We detect known and novel loci underlying morphological traits differentiating barley genepools, find evidence for convergent selection for barbless awns in barley and rice and show that a major-effect resistance locus conferring resistance to bymovirus infection has been favored by traditional farmers. This study outlines future directions for genomics-assisted genebank management and the utilization of germplasm collections for linking natural variation to human selection during crop evolution.

Мета. Виявити селекційно-генетичні особливості ячменю ярого за масою 1000 зерен та виділити генетичні джерела для селекції в умовах центральної частини Лісостепу України. Методи. Дослідження проводили в Миронівському інституті пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. Досліджували F1 двох повних (6 ´ 6) діалельних схем схрещувань. Перша схема включала сучасні як вітчизняні, так закордонні сорти ячменю ярого пивоварного напряму (‘МІП Титул’, ‘Авгур’, ‘Datcha’, ‘Quench’, ‘Gladys’, ‘Beatrix’), друга – класичні плівчасті остисті (‘МІП Мирослав’, ‘Sebastian’), безості (‘Козир’, ‘Вітраж’) та голозерні (‘Condor’, ‘CDC Rattan’) сорти. Результати. Виявлено різні типи успадкування маси 1000 зерен, за винятком негативного домінування. Частка комбінацій з відповідними значеннями ступеня фенотипового домінування змінювалась залежно від залучених до схрещувань генотипів та років випробувань. В обох схемах схрещування як у 2019-му, так і у 2020 р. в більшості комбінацій виявлено позитивне наддомінування. Найбільшу кількість комбінацій із проявом гетерозису за різних умов вирощування відзначено в разі залучення до схрещувань сортів ‘Gladys’ і ‘МІП Мирослав’. За параметрами генетичної варіації виявлено, що ознака визначалась переважно адитивно-домінантною системою. Домінування було спрямованим на збільшення маси 1000 зерен. Лише у другій схемі схрещувань у 2019 р. значення показника спрямованості домінування було недостовірним. У локусах виявлено неповне домінування у 2019-му та наддомінування у 2020 р. Достовірно високі ефекти загальної комбінаційної здатності в обидва роки відзначено для сортів ‘Datcha’, ‘Gladys’, ‘МІП Мирослав’, ‘Козир’ і ‘Вітраж’. Висновки. Виявлені селекційно-генетичні особливості вказують, що в переважної більшості створених гібридних комбінацій необхідним буде остаточний добір за масою 1000 зерен у пізніших поколіннях, коли домінантні алелі перейдуть у гомозиготний стан. Як ефективні генетичні джерела для підвищення маси 1000 зерен можуть бути використані остисті сорти ‘Gladys’, ‘МІП Мирослав’ і ‘Datcha’, а також безості – ‘Козир’ і ‘Вітраж’.

Мета. Виявити особливості рівня прояву і варіабельність кількості зерен у колосі ячменю ярого та виділити нові генетичні джерела за поєднанням підвищеного та стабільного рівня прояву ознаки для селекції в умовах центральної частини Лісостепу України. Методи. Дослідження проведено у 2018–2020 рр. в умовах Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. Дослідили 96 колекційних зразків різних підвидів та груп різновидностей ячменю ярого походженням з 15 країн світу. Застосовували низку статистичних параметрів та графічних моделей. Результати. Дисперсійним аналізом AMMI моделі виявлено достовірно високі частки внеску у загальній фенотиповій варіації усіх її складових: умов року (33,8–40,2%), генотипу (35,2–48,9%) і взаємодії генотип–середовище (17,3–29,3%). За показниками гомеостатичності (Homi) і селекційної цінності (Sci) та візуалізаціями GGE biplot диференційовано зразки відповідно до рівня прояву і варіабельності ознаки та виокремлено нові генетичні джерела для селекції. Коефіцієнт фенотипової варіації варіював від низького у дворядних плівчастих зразків (PCV = 9,60%) до наближеного до високого у голозерних (PCV = 18,9%). Високе значення коефіцієнту генотипової варіації виявлено у голозерних (GCV = 10,95%) та шестирядних зразків (GCV = 13,28%). Коефіцієнт успадковуваності ознаки мав значення від високого (H2 = 79,4%) у дворядних зразків до наближеного до низького (H2 = 33,7%) у шестирядних. Очікуване генетичне поліпшення становило від середнього у багаторядних зразків (GAM = 13,10%) до високого у голозерних (GAM = 23,51%). Висновки. Виділено колекційні зразки які поєднують підвищену озерненість та її відносну стабільність: дворядні плівчасті – ‘Тівер’ (UKR), ‘Almonte’ (CAN), ‘Despina’ (DEU), ‘Cымбат’ (KAZ), ‘Смарагд’ (UKR), ‘Новатор’ (UKR); дворядні голозерні – ‘CDC Candle’ (CAN) і ‘Millhouse’ (CAN), багаторядні плівчасті – ‘AC Westech’ (CAN) і ‘AC Alma’ (CAN). Перспективою подальших досліджень є залучення виділених зразків для створення нового вихідного матеріалу та встановлення особливостей успадкування кількості зерен у колосі, а також виявлення взаємозв’язків цієї ознаки з іншими структурними елементами врожайності.

KEY MESSAGE: Evaluation of breeding progress for spring barley varieties in Germany showed that both grain yield and malting quality were considerably improved during the last 33 years, and that genetic effects of protein concentration and malting traits were not associated. Based on historical data, this study aimed to investigate yield potential and malting quality of 187 varieties tested and released in German registration trials to evaluate the value for cultivation and use (VCU) during 1983–2015, and to quantify the environmental variability and the association among traits. We used mixed linear models with multiple linear regression terms to dissect genetic and non-genetic trend components. Grain yield increased by 43% (23.4 dt ha⁻¹) in VCU trials and 35% (14.0 dt ha⁻¹) on-farm relative to 1983. All yield components contributed significantly. Malting quality was also considerably improved by 2.3% for extract content up to 25.1% for friability, relative to 1983, nearly completely due to new varieties. Total variability of individual traits was very different between traits (2.4–24.4% relative to 1983). The relative influence of genotypes on total variation was low for grain yield and its components, whereas it was considerably larger for other traits. We found remarkable differences between phenotypic and genetic correlation coefficients for grain yield and protein concentration with malting traits. The observed positive phenotypic relation between grain yield and malting quality can be attributed to a shift of selection and environmental effects, but genetic correlations showed a negative association. Genetic effects of protein concentration and malting quality were not correlated indicating that both were not genetically linked. Considerable yield progress and improvement of malting quality were achieved despite of their weak to moderate negative genetic dependence.

Background. Naked barley is a promising food crop. To enhance its production, active breeding is required to create productive varieties. The purpose of this study was to test the STS-marker for the Nud1 gene controlling the hulled phenotype, and use it for the production of naked barley hybrids. Materials and methods. Genotyping of 112 F2 hybrids obtained by crossing the naked black variety ‘Jet’ and the hulled white variety ‘Elf’ was carried out using wF2 and kR1, or tR2 primers in the regular PCR mode to amplify the recessive or dominant alleles of the Nud1 gene, respectively, and also in the multiplex PCR mode, which allows simultaneous amplification of both dominant and recessive alleles of the Nud1 gene. The genotyping data were compared with those on phenotypes of hybrids. Results and discussion. The possibility of using multiplex PCR with a set of primers wF2, kR1, and tR2 for identifying dominant and recessive alleles of the Nud1 gene in hybrid material has been demonstrated. However, while the observed number of hybrids homozygous for the recessive allele nud1 almost completely corresponded to their expected number, the clear predominance of homozygotes for the dominant allele Nud1 and the lack of heterozygotes compared to the expected number of hybrids of these groups indicates erroneous identification of some heterozygotes as dominant homozygotes, which must be taken into account during selection of hulled barleys by genotyping. Conclusions. The STS-marker amplified by primers wF2, kR1, and tR2, can be used to select recessive homozygotes nud1nud1 from hybrid populations, however, additional analysis is required for a more reliable identification of heterozygotes and homozygotes for the dominant allele of the Nud1 gene. | Актуальность. Голозерный ячмень является перспективной продовольственной культурой. Для увеличения его производства необходима активная селекционная работа по созданию высокопродуктивных сортов. Целью представленной работы является апробация STS-маркера к гену Nud1, контролирующему пленчатость, для отбора голозерных гибридов ячменя. Материалы и методы. Генотипирование 112 гибридов популяции F2, полученной с помощью скрещивания голозерного черноколосого сорта ‘Jet’ и пленчатого белоколосого сорта ‘Эльф’, проводили с помощью праймеров wF2 и kR1, либо tR2, в режиме обычной ПЦР, которая позволила амплифицировать фрагменты рецессивного, либо доминантного аллелей гена Nud1, соответственно, а также в режиме мультиплексной ПЦР, позволяющей одновременно амплифицировать фрагменты и доминантного, и рецессивного аллелей гена Nud1. Данные генотипирования сопоставляли с фенотипами гибридов. Результаты и обсуждение. Показана возможность использования мультиплексной ПЦР с набором праймеров wF2, kR1, tR2 для выявления доминантных и рецессивных аллелей гена Nud1 в гибридном материале. Однако, если наблюдаемая частота гибридов гомозиготных по рецессивному аллелю nud1 почти полностью соответствовала их ожидаемой частоте при моногенном типе наследования, то явное преобладание гомозигот по доминантному аллелю Nud1 и недостаток гетерозигот по сравнению с ожидаемыми частотами гибридов этих групп указывает на ошибочную идентификацию части гетерозигот как доминантных гомозигот, что нужно учитывать при отборе пленчатых форм с помощью генотипирования. Заключение. STS-маркер, амплифицируемый с помощью праймеров wF2, kR1, tR2, возможно использовать для отбора рецесcивных гомозигот nud1nud1 из гибридных популяций, однако для более надежной идентификации гетерозигот и гомозигот по доминантному аллелю гена Nud1 необходим дополнительный анализ.

The objective of this study is to understand which requirements for cereal cultivars—with regard to climate change adaptation—are in demand by farmers and advisors, and to clarify whether there are any differences in their assessments. A comparative survey was used to collect data from 410 farmers and 114 advisors in Germany. The majority of both farmers and advisors reported perceivable effects of climatic change on plant production. The increase in droughts and hot spells, the increased incidence of torrential rain, and mild winters were mentioned as the main effects of climate change. For climate change adaptation, the farmers and advisors mostly relied on a locally-adapted cultivar selection. It is estimated that eco-stability, grain yield, resistance to lodging and drought tolerance are important cultivar properties. In the study, farmers and advisors equally pointed out the need for additional cultivar evaluation according to eco-stability. Finally, only minor differences regarding farmers’ and advisors’ assessments were found within the study. The outcome of this research points to the need of implementing farmers’ demands in cultivar recommendations. For example, an impartial assessment of cultivars’ eco-stability could help support the choice of cultivars and reduce the growing risks in cereal production with regard to climate change.

An experimental trial was carried out during two successive crop years, (2015/2016 and 2016/2017). The study focused on an F1 generation of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), composed of twenty hybrids, from a complete diallel cross between autochthones and introduced cultivars.The aim is to bring together in one combination the maximum of favorable genes existing in local and introduced genotypes. The evaluation of the genetic determinism of parental lines and their descendants, through the measurement of six quantitative variables, is ensured thanks to a detailed genetic analysis according to the model of Griffing (1956) and confirmed by the graphic model of Hayman (1954).The results obtained reveal the existence of a great genetic variability between the hybrids and between their parents; additive and non-additive genetic effects are involved in the control of the variables evaluated. The variance ratio of general combining ability (GCA) and the specific combining ability (SCA) is less than one unit which explains the preponderance of the dominant genes, with a super dominance involved in the expression of the length of the spike, the number of grains per spike and the productivity per plant; on the other hand, complete and partial dominance respectively control the expression of the height of the plants and the weight of one thousand grains.

The international collections of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) hosted by 11 CGIAR Centers are important components of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s global system of conservation and use of PGRFA. They also play an important supportive role in realizing Target 2.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals. This paper analyzes CGIAR genebanks’ trends in acquiring and distributing PGRFA over the last 35 years, with a particular focus on the last decade. The paper highlights a number of factors influencing the Centers’ acquisition of new PGRFA to include in the international collections, including increased capacity to analyze gaps in those collections and precisely target new collecting missions, availability of financial resources, and the state of international and national access and benefit-sharing laws and phytosanitary regulations. Factors contributing to Centers’ distributions of PGRFA included the extent of accession-level information, users’ capacity to identify the materials they want, and policies. The genebanks’ rates of both acquisition and distribution increased over the last decade. The paper ends on a cautionary note concerning the potential of unresolved tensions regarding access and benefit sharing and digital genomic sequence information to undermine international cooperation to conserve and use PGRFA.
