Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture are a significant contributor to total Danish emissions. Consequently, much effort is currently given to the exploration of potential strategies to reduce agricultural emissions. This paper presents results from a study estimating agricultural GHG emissions in the form of methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide (including carbon sources and sinks, and the impact of energy consumption/bioenergy production) from Danish agriculture in the years 1990–2010. An analysis of possible measures to reduce the GHG emissions indicated that a 50–70% reduction of agricultural emissions by 2050 relative to 1990 is achievable, including mitigation measures in relation to the handling of manure and fertilisers, optimization of animal feeding, cropping practices, and land use changes with more organic farming, afforestation and energy crops. In addition, the bioenergy production may be increased significantly without reducing the food production, whereby Danish agriculture could achieve a positive energy balance.

The identification of nitrate (NO₃⁻) sources and biogeochemical transformations is critical for understanding the different nitrogen (N) pathways, and thus, for controlling diffuse pollution in groundwater affected by livestock and agricultural activities. This study combines chemical data, including environmental isotopes (δ²HH₂O, δ¹⁸OH₂O, δ¹⁵NNO₃, and δ¹⁸ONO₃), with land use/land cover data and a Bayesian isotope mixing model, with the aim of reducing the uncertainty when estimating the contributions of different pollution sources. Sampling was taken from 53 groundwater sites in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico, during 2018. The results revealed that the NO₃⁻ (as N) concentration ranged from 0.01 to 109 mg/L, with more than 32% of the sites exceeding the safe limit for drinking water quality established by the World Health Organization (10 mg/L). Moreover, according to the groundwater flow path, different biogeochemical transformations were observed throughout the study area: microbial nitrification was dominant in the groundwater recharge areas with elevated NO₃⁻ concentrations; in the transition zones a mixing of different transformations, such as nitrification, denitrification, and/or volatilization, were identified, associated to moderate NO₃⁻ concentrations; whereas in the discharge area the main process affecting NO₃⁻ concentrations was denitrification, resulting in low NO₃⁻ concentrations. The results of the MixSIAR isotope mixing model revealed that the application of manure from concentrated animal-feeding operations (∼48%) and urban sewage (∼43%) were the primary contributors of NO₃⁻ pollution, whereas synthetic fertilizers (∼5%), soil organic nitrogen (∼4%), and atmospheric deposition played a less important role. Finally, an estimation of an uncertainty index (UI90) of the isotope mixing results indicated that the uncertainties associated with atmospheric deposition and NO₃⁻−fertilizers were the lowest (0.05 and 0.07, respectively), while those associated with manure and sewage were the highest (0.24 and 0.20, respectively).

Biosolid, i.e., dehydrated sludge from effluent treatment stations, has been progressively used as an agricultural fertilizer due to its high organic matter and nutrient contents. Elephant grass (Cenchrus purpureus (Schumach.) Morrone) presents easy adaptation and high yields, being used for animal feeding and for energy purposes. The objective of this work was to analyze the production and bromatological parameters of elephant grass with four different doses of biosolid, one of chemical fertilizer and a control plot, with two replicates each. A field experiment was carried out using a randomized block design with three blocks, totaling 18 plots, which received biosolid fertilization at 1×, 2×, 4×, and 8× the levels recommended by the Brazilian National Environment Council, along with conventional chemical fertilization and no fertilization, all under similar drip irrigation. Tukey’s test indicated a significant difference at p < 0.01 for total production in the first cut and acid detergent fiber in the second cut. At p < 0.05, significant differences were detected for total nitrogen and total protein in the first cut. The elephant grass yield under “1× biosolid” was similar to that reached with chemical fertilization. Physical and bromatological characteristics indicated potential use as animal feed and energy source. For doses higher than specified by Brazilian standards (2×, 4×, and 8×), further studies are required to verify possible contamination from heavy metals, pathogenic microorganisms, and n.

The quality of feed, including its microbiological characteristics, is important for the organization of full-value feeding of animals in agriculture. So, the means of non-reagent processing of feeds, including cavitation treatment, are becoming more widespread. In our study, it was shown that the amount of mesophilic aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms (QMAFAnM) decreases after a 5-min treatment of the test samples (chalk, fuz, bran, and zeolite) (1.1–35 times) compared to untreated samples, while an increase in the duration of exposure is proportional to the expression of the bactericidal effect. A study of the bioluminescent response of the test strain Escherichia coli K12 TG1 under the influence of the test samples showed inhibition of bioluminescence under the action of chalk and an increase in luminescence during incubation with fusa and bran. When examining the growth rates of strains E. Coli 675 and Bifidobacterium longum B379M, it was found that water and zeolite treated with cavitation suppressed the growth of E. coli 675, while the growth of Bifidobacterium longum B379M was higher than the control values at the end of the experiment. So, cavitation processing can cause the death of microflora of feed additives, at the same time, as a result of the dissociation of a complex of organic polymers, contributing to the positive response of probiotic strains. These studies can be used in agriculture in the preparation of feed additives from waste from the processing industry.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of graded levels of dietary bentonite supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, nutrient digestibility, and histopathology of certain organs in rabbits fed a diet naturally contaminated with aflatoxin. In total, 125 weanling New Zealand White male rabbits were randomly assigned to five treatment groups each of five replicates. Treatments were as follows: T1, basal diet with no aflatoxin and no additives (positive control diet, PCD); T2, basal diet naturally contaminated with 150 ppb aflatoxin and no additives (negative control diet, NCD); T3, NCD plus 0.5% Egyptian bentonite; T4, NCD plus 1% Egyptian bentonite; and T5, NCD plus 1% Egyptian bentonite. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. Results showed a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the body weight and the body weight gain in the NCD, while they were improved (P < 0.05) in groups fed diets supplemented with different levels of bentonite. The relative weight of the liver and kidneys were higher in the NCD, while the liver weight was relatively high in the group fed NCD supplemented with 0.5% bentonite, and it was not significant in other bentonite-supplemented groups. Bentonite supplementation improved the digestibility coefficients of various nutrients. Bentonite addition decreased the histopathological lesions in liver, kidney, and intestine caused by aflatoxin-infected diets. In conclusion, bentonite supplementation overcame the negative effect of aflatoxin, enhanced growth performance traits, decreased the relative weights of the liver and the kidney which are usually increased by aflatoxin, caused significant improvement in nutrients’ digestibility, and decreased the histopathological lesions caused by aflatoxin-infected diets. The level of 2% bentonite is recommended for ameliorating the aflatoxin effects.

Recycling sewage sludge by applying it to agricultural land is strategically important in the European Union and is regulated by Directive 86/278/EEC, aimed at protecting the soil and humans from the presence of unwanted substances. However, because of the ruminant feeding habits, there is a risk that animals grazed on pasture or fed crops grown on land treated in this way may ingest biosolids adhered to foliage and/or on the top soil. This paper describes an episode of toxicity in a dairy herd consuming silage from a field fertilized with sewage sludge produced in a wastewater treatment plant. The affected cows were recumbent, unable to rise and suffered diarrhoea. Analysis of tissues (fresh weight) from a cow that subsequently died revealed severe hepatic iron loading (6720 mg/kg) and secondary multi-trace element hepatic deficiency, particularly of copper (0.812 mg/kg) and manganese (0.436 mg/kg), but also selenium (0.164 mg/kg) and zinc (19.9 mg/kg). The study findings indicate that the use of sewage sludge in agriculture can cause secondary multi-trace element deficiencies in ruminants. Careful attention should be taken when crops are ensilaged avoiding top-soil sewage sludge contamination, since the acidification process may greatly increase Fe bioavailability.

Water represents 71% of all earth area and about 97% of this water is salty water. So, only 3% of the overall world water quantity is freshwater. Human can benefit only from 1% of this water and the remaining 2% freeze at both poles of earth. Therefore, it is important to preserve the freshwater through increasing the plants consuming salty water. The future prosperity of feed resources in arid and semi-arid countries depends on economic use of alternative resources that have been marginalized for long periods of time, such as halophytic plants, which are one such potential future resource. Halophyte plants can grow in high salinity water and soil and to some extent during drought. The growth of these plants depends on the contact of the salted water with plant roots as in semi-desert saline water, mangrove swamps, marshes, and seashores. Halophyte plants need high levels of sodium chloride in the soil water for growth, and the soil water must also contain high levels of salts, as sodium hydroxide or magnesium sulfate. There are many uses for halophyte plants, including feed for animals, vegetables, drugs, sand dune stabilizers, wind shelter, soil cover, wetland cultivation, laundry detergents, and paper production. This paper will focus on the use of halophytes as a feed additive for animals. In spite of the good nutritional value of halophytes, some anti-nutritional factors as nitrates, nitrite complexes, tannins, glycosides, phenolic compounds, saponins, oxalates, and alkaloids may be present in some of them. The presence of such anti-nutritional agents makes halophytes unpalatable to animals, which tends to reduce feed intake and nutrient use. Therefore, the negative effects of these plants on animal performance are the only objection against using halophytes in animal feed diets. This review article highlights the beneficial impact of considering halophytes in animal feeding on saving freshwater and illustrates its nutritive value for livestock from different aspects.
