Microplastics and nanoplastics in global food webs: A bibliometric analysis (2009–2019)

This paper presents the research landscape on microplastics and nanoplastics (M/NPs) in global food webs based on a bibliometric analysis of 330 publications published in 2009–2019 extracted from Web of Science. The publications increased tremendously since 2013. Marine Pollution Bulletin is one of the top productive journals for this topic. The publication landscape related to M/NPs in global food webs, as interdisciplinary research, is highly dependent on the funding availability. The high productivities of England, China, USA and European countries are attributed to the funding from the agencies at regional or national levels. Keyword analysis reveals the shift of research hotspots from investigations on M/NPs absorbed by various organisms in the ecosystems to studies on the trophic transfer of M/NPs and sorbed contaminants in the food webs and their associated adverse impacts. Funding agencies play important roles in leading the future development of this topic.

Ecosystems play critically important roles in supporting human society, while human activities seriously disturb their initial balance. Lots of researches on ecosystem services are conducted due to the increasing concern on ecological security worldwide. In order to provide valuable insights for understanding the primary performance of ecosystem services–related studies, a qualitative and quantitative analysis by using a bibliometric tool is performed in this study. Journal impact factor, CiteScore, and h-index are used for identifying influential journals, while h-index is used for recognizing productive countries/territories and institutions. Social network analysis of countries/territories and institutions is visualized, respectively, so that relationships among them can be uncovered. Citation analysis of publications and co-occurrence analysis of high-frequency keywords are also performed to explore hotspots and popular methods in this field. This study uncovers a holistic picture on the primary performance of ecosystem services–related literatures published from 1997 to 2016, including journals, countries/territories, and institutions. Results find that forest, agriculture, and wetland ecosystems attract lots of attention. Finally, major methods used for ecosystem services evaluation are identified and discussed. Research outcomes will provide valuable insights to stakeholders interested in ecosystem services.

Green consumption can facilitate sustainable industrial development and improve the overall efficiency of resource utilization. In response to rapid economic development and increasing environmental emissions, it is critical to promote green consumption so that the whole society can move toward sustainable development. This study aims to systematically review studies on green consumption by means of meta-analysis, bibliometric analysis, and social network analysis. The results show that green consumption is an interdisciplinary research field, involving environmental science, social science, medical science, economics, and other disciplines. Most productive countries, institutions, authors are identified so that the new researchers in this field can find their research partners. Keywords analysis results help identify the research hotpots in this field. It is suggested that future green consumption research should focus on behavior mechanism, stakeholder coordination, and policy evaluation. In general, the results obtained from this study provide valuable information for researchers and practitioners to promote green consumption research.

The relationship between industrial structure and carbon emissions has been widely identified as a critical research topic by international organizations and academics. Using bibliometrics analysis, this study aimed at dissecting the global characteristics and trends of research on industrial structure and carbon emissions. Based on the 806 documents from 2004 to 2019 in Web of Science, this work was implemented from four aspects, including basic characteristics analysis, country/territory and institution analysis, category and journal analysis, and reference and keyword analysis. The results of this study showed rapid growth trends of research on industrial structure and carbon emissions from 2015 to 2019. The collaborations among countries and institutions were extensive worldwide with China, the USA, and the UK as the main participants. Furthermore, the corresponding research topics, research priorities, and research paths were summarized according to the references co-citation analysis and keywords cluster analysis, which from the perspective of the correlation between different types of industry with carbon emissions. Finally, the timezone view of the top 100 keywords indicated that the emerging trends in the research on industrial structure and carbon emissions were regional analysis, industrialization, and environmental efficiency, and prediction of carbon emissions peak and the spatial distribution in different types of industries were the hotspots in recent years. The findings provide a better understanding of global characteristics and trends that have emerged in this field, which can also offer reference for future research.

Resource management should follow a circular flow so that important substances such as phosphorus are not wasted in the form of water bodies’ pollutants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate innovations focussing on the recovery of phosphorus in constructed wetland (CW) treatment systems, as well as related removal mechanisms and the more recent development and application of new substrates with high removal efficiency and potential for phosphorous recovery. Using bibliometric analysis, the most important P removal pathways were identified and investigated, concluding that substrate choice is one of the main aspects to be considered when aiming for phosphorous removal, and many improvements were obtained through the application of materials from either natural or artificial origins as well as construction waste and by-products of industrial processes. Thus, it is important that the chosen materials for a wetland substrate must present affinity with phosphorous, recycling possibility, low cost and local availability, in order to approach the concepts of circular economy and sustainable development.

With increasing attentions on climate change, solid wastes, over-tourism, and improved environmental awareness worldwide, eco-tourism has been widely promoted worldwide. This requires that governmental agencies at different levels should prepare appropriate policies to facilitate eco-tourism and local communities should take necessary actions to preserve their natural resources, protect their environment, and support sustainable tourism. Academically, literatures on eco-tourism have increased faster with an annual growth rate of 10–30% during the recent years. Under such a circumstance, it is important to conduct a comprehensive review so that research progress on eco-tourism can be summarized and future research directions can be identified. Based on 1771 publications published during 2001–2018, a systematic method combining bibliometric analysis and network analysis is applied in this study to uncover the dynamic trends, academic collaboration, and research hotspots related with eco-tourism. Results show that the total number of relevant publications has gradually increased. Key journals include Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Conservation Biology, and Biological Conservation. Authors from USA have the most publications and international co-authorships, while the most influential institution is the Chinese Academy of Science. Moreover, research keywords have been identified, including eco-tourism, management, biodiversity, national park, sustainability, and sustainable tourism. Research findings of this study provide valuable insights to further improve eco-tourism research so that this emerging research field can be proactively fostered.

Metal-organic frameworks, an emerging class of porous material, have developed rapidly in recent years. In order to clarify the application of metal-organic frameworks in the field of environmental science, 1386 articles over the last 20 years were obtained from Scopus and analysed by the bibliometric method. And the collaboration between countries, institutions and authors and the co-occurrence of keywords were also conducted using VOSviewer. The results indicated that this area of research has entered a fast-developing stage. The number of articles published has grown from 7 articles in 1999 to 378 articles in 2018. The most productive country was China with 626 articles published. The most productive institution was the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the most productive author was Jhung SH from Kyungpook National University of South Korea. Although metal-organic frameworks have been widely used in adsorption and catalytic degradation of pollutants from the environment, the removal mechanism of pollutants by MOFs, the stability improvement and the cost reduction of metal-organic frameworks are still the main challenges for their practical applications.

In recent years, climate change and carbon sinks have been widely studied by the academic community, and relevant research results have emerged in abundance. In this paper, a scientometric analysis of 747 academic works published between 1991 and 2018 related to climate change and carbon sinks is presented to characterize the intellectual landscape by identifying and revealing the basic characteristics, research power, intellectual base, research topic evolution, and research hotspots in this field. The results show that ① the number of publications in this field has increased rapidly and the field has become increasingly interdisciplinary; ② the most productive authors and institutions in this subject area are in the USA, China, Canada, Australia, and European countries, and the cooperation between these researchers is closer than other researchers in the field; ③ 11 of the 747 papers analyzed in this study have played a key role in the evolution of the field; and ④ in this paper, we divide research hotspots into three decade-long phases (1991–1999, 2000–2010, and 2011–present). Drought problems have attracted more and more attention from scholars. In the end, given the current trend of the studies, we conclude a list of research potentials of climate change and carbon sinks in the future. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of climate change and carbon sink research to better understand the global trends and directions that have emerged in this field over the past 28 years, which can also provide reference for future research in this field.

The booming construction industry has led to many environmental and occupational health and safety problems. Construction dust caused irreversible damage to the health of frontline workers and polluted the surrounding air environment, which has attracted the attention of researchers and practitioners. In this study, to systematically sort and analyze the distribution of construction dust (CD) research, its hot areas, and the evolution of its fronts, papers with “construction dust” as the subject term in the Web of Science Core Collection Database since 2010 are visually analyzed using CiteSpace. The characteristics of these papers, including the quantity trend, quality, author group, affiliated institution type, and journal type, are summarized, and keyword co-appearance and paper co-citation knowledge maps are produced. The results show that (1) China is the backbone of CD research, and the research results account for a considerable proportion of the total. (2) Respiratory dust and atmospheric aerosols, marble dust, PM₂.₅, and other hot issues have always attracted international attention. And exposure assessment and spatial distribution were the main focuses in the study of CD. (3) The direction of CD research will explore in a more subtle and intelligent direction in the future, for example, monitoring and control equipment under the technical support of big data technology and machine learning and face recognition. By combining bibliometrics with a systematic review, we aim to analyze the research foci and future development direction deeply, providing scholars with a comprehensive view of the field.

This article presents a bibliometric study of 200 European publications released between 2001 and 2016, about the contamination of mushrooms by selected elements. The analysis includes figures on the type of analyte, its concentration, the species of fungi, and its country of origin. In the literature review, 492 species of mushrooms (wild-growing and cultured) found in 26 European countries and their concentration of 74 associated elements were analysed. The papers, which dealt mainly with the heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) concentrations of mushrooms, primarily came from Turkey, Poland, Spain, and the Czech Republic. More than 50% of the publications provided data about edible mushrooms. The results of the bibliometric analysis showed that over the 16 years, European research on fungal contamination by selected analytes has not lessened in popularity and is ongoing. Many of the studies underlined the need to assess the risk to human health arising from the consumption of contaminated mushrooms taken from various habitats. These results were the effect of, among other things, the strong interest in studies carried out on edible species, in which concentrations of mainly heavy metals that are dangerous to health and are marked were indicated (Cd, Pb, and Hg).
