Phytoremediation of soil Contaminated by Heavy Metals within a Technical Landfill Center Vicinity: Algerian Case Study

The contamination of environment with heavy metals has become a serious problem which can affect the human health. Three heavy metals (Zn, Cd and Pb) were determined in soil and plants for below and aboveground parts along landfill Demina center, located in the wilaya of Jijel, Algeria to evaluate their behavior and uptake by Ditrichia viscosa, Juncus effusus and Solanum nigrum. In our research we tried to study the capacity of these spontaneous plants to accumulate and to translocate heavy metals from soil to their tissues during three years. The heavy metals examined in the soils of the study area showed variations in concentrations, the study area may be practically unpolluted with Zn and Pb (CF; 0.45 and 0.98 successively) and very contaminated with Cd (CF; 8.53). According to the results obtained, the soil is uncontaminated with lead (Igeo=-0.60) and zinc (Igeo= -1.42) but it is heavily contaminated with cadmium (Igeo=2.5) along the study area. Overall the BCFS (bioconcentration factors) are superior to 1, for the all heavy metals and species. However, BCFs follow the following order; BCFZn>BCFPb>BCFCd for Ditrichia viscosa, the following order BCFPb>BCFZn>BCFCd for Juncus effuses and follow the following order; BCFZn>BCFCd>BCFPb for Solanum nigrum. The TFs (translocation factor) of the present study showed that Solanum nigrum can translocate the three of the metals into their aboveground parts.

Mangrove sediments can store high amount of pollutants that can be more or less bioavailable depending on environmental conditions. When in available forms, these elements can be subject to an uptake by mangrove biota, and can thus become a problem for human health. The main objective of this study was to assess the distribution of some trace elements (Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Cr, As, and Cu) in tissues of different plants and snails in a tropical mangrove (Can Gio mangrove Biosphere Reserve) developing downstream a megacity (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam). In addition, we were interested in the relationships between mangrove habitats, sediment quality and bioaccumulation in the different tissues studied. Roots and leaves of main mangrove trees (Avicennia alba and Rhizophora apiculata) were collected, as well as different snail species: Chicoreus capucinus, Littoraria melanostoma, Cerithidea obtusa, Nerita articulata. Trace elements concentrations in the different tissues were determined by ICP-MS after digestion with concentrated HNO₃ and H₂O₂. Concentrations differed between stands and tissues, showing the influence of sediment geochemistry, species specific requirements, and eventually adaptation abilities. Regarding plants tissues, the formation of iron plaque on roots may play a key role in preventing Fe and As translocation to the aerial parts of the mangrove trees. Mn presented higher concentrations in the leaves than in the roots, possibly because of physiological requirements. Non-essential elements (Ni, Cr and Co) showed low bioconcentration factors (BCF) in both roots and leaves, probably resulting from their low bioavailability in sediments. Regarding snails, essential elements (Fe, Mn, and Cu) were the dominant ones in their tissues. Most of snails were “macroconcentrators” for Cu, with BCF values reaching up to 42.8 for Cerithidea obtusa. We suggest that high quantity of As in all snails may result from its high bioavailability and from their ability to metabolize As.

Despite the endeavour to eradicate informal e-waste recycling, remediation of polluted sites is not mandatory in many developing countries and thus the hazard of pollutants remaining in soil is often overlooked. It is noteworthy that a majority of previous studies only analysed a few pollutants in e-waste to reflect the impact of informal e-waste recycling. However, the actual impact may have been largely underestimated since e-waste contains various groups of pollutants and the effect of some emerging pollutants in e-waste remains unexplored. Thus, this study examined the contamination of metals, PBDEs and AHFRs in the vicinity of an abandoned e-waste recycling site. The accumulation and translocation of these pollutants in rice plants cultivated at the nearby paddy field were measured to estimate the health risk through rice consumption. We revealed that the former e-waste burning site was still seriously contaminated with some metals (e.g. Sn, Sb and Ag, Igₑₒ > 5), PBDEs (Igₑₒ > 3) and AHFRs (Igₑₒ > 3), which can disperse to the nearby paddy field and stream. The rice plants can effectively absorb some metals (e.g. Mo, Cr and Mn, BCF > 1), but not PBDEs and AHFRs (BCF < 0.15), from soil and translocate them to the leaves. Alarmingly, the health risk through rice consumption was high primarily due to Sb and Sn (HQ > 20), whereas PBDEs and AHFRs had limited contribution (HQ < 0.08). Our results imply that abandoned e-waste recycling sites still act as the pollution source, jeopardising the surrounding environment and human health. Since some trace metals (e.g. Sb and Sn) are seldom monitored, the impact of informal e-waste recycling would be more notorious than previously thought. Remediation work should be conducted promptly in abandoned e-waste recycling sites to protect the environment and human health.

To investigate the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on boron (B) toxicity in plants under the combined stresses of salt and drought, Puccinellia tenuiflora was grown in the soil with the inoculation of Funneliformis mosseae and Claroideoglomus etunicatum. After three weeks of treatment, the plants were harvested to determine mycorrhizal colonization rates, plant biomass, as well as tissue B, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium concentrations. The results show that the combined stresses reduced mycorrhizal colonization. Mycorrhizal inoculation significantly increased plant biomass while reduced shoot B concentrations. Mycorrhizal inoculation also slightly increased shoot phosphorus and potassium concentrations, and reduced shoot sodium concentrations. F. mosseae and C. etunicatum were able to alleviate the combined stresses of B, salt, and drought. The two fungal species and their combination showed no significant difference in the alleviation of B toxicity. It is inferred that AMF is able to alleviate B toxicity in P. tenuiflora by increasing biomass and reducing tissue B concentrations. The increase in plant phosphorus and potassium, as well as the decrease in sodium accumulation that induced by AMF, can help plant tolerate the combined stresses of salt and drought. Our findings suggest that F. mosseae and C. etunicatum are potential candidates for facilitating the phytoremediation of B-contaminated soils with salt and drought stress.

Fluoxetine, a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, is among the most prescribed pharmaceutical active substances worldwide. This study aimed to assess its accumulation and metabolization in the mussel Mytillus galloprovincialis, considered an excellent sentinel species for traditional and emerging pollutants. Mussels were collected from Ria Formosa Lagoon, Portugal, and exposed to a nominal concentration of fluoxetine (75 ng L−1) for 15 days. Approximately 1 g of whole mussel soft tissues was extracted with acetonitrile:formic acid, loaded into an Oasis MCX cartridge, and fluoxetine analysed by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MSn). After 3 days of exposure, fluoxetine was accumulated in 70% of the samples, with a mean of 2.53 ng g−1 dry weight (d.w.) and norfluoxetine was only detected in one sample (10%), at 3.06 ng g−1 d.w. After 7 days of exposure, the accumulation of fluoxetine and norfluoxetine increased up to 80 and 50% respectively, and their mean accumulated levels in mussel tissues were up to 4.43 and 2.85 ng g−1 d.w., respectively. By the end of the exposure period (15 days), both compounds were detected in 100% of the samples (mean of 9.31 and 11.65 ng g−1 d.w., respectively). Statistical analysis revealed significant accumulation differences between the 3rd and 15th day of exposure for fluoxetine, and between the 3rd and 7th against the 15th day of exposure for norfluoxetine. These results suggest that the fluoxetine accumulated in mussel tissues is likely to be metabolised into norfluoxetine with the increase of the time of exposure, giving evidence that at these realistic environmental concentrations, toxic effects of fluoxetine in mussel tissues may occur.

This study evaluates the geographical distribution of Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe in wild mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis as well as in associated suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments from the Algerian coast. The bioaccumulation (metal concentrations in tissue), bioavailability (metal indices) and bioconcentration of trace metals from the adjacent environment were assessed. The computed pollution load index (PLI) indicates that the sediments are not polluted by these metals, except for Zn which shows a moderate level of contamination. All the metals in SPM samples are in a ‘safe range’ with respect to the computed degree of contamination (DC < 2). The target hazard quotients (THQ) and the hazard index (HI) values indicate a risk level with Fe. However, the Cr measured in mussels is considered ‘extreme’, according to the consumption rate limit for mussels (CRₗᵢₘ) which limits their consumption to 0.5 kg/day.

The distribution and bioconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water, suspended particulate material (SPM), algae, and zooplankton samples from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China, were investigated. The PAHs in the water and SPM samples is significantly associated with chlorophyll a (Chl a), implying the important role of the aquatic productivity on PAH distribution. PAHs in the water or SPM samples were strongly correlated to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) or algal particulate organic carbon (A-POC). Moreover, the log bioconcentration factor (BCF) values (mL g⁻¹) of PAHs in both the algae and zooplankton samples were linearly related to their log octanol-water coefficient (Kow) values. However, the slopes of these relationships were negatively correlated with Chl a, attributing to the difference in the dominant plankton species or the non-equilibrium exchange between air-water-biota. The above results indicate the important role of trophic levels on the distribution and bioaccumulation of PAHs.

Green oysters were found within the Mailiao industrial harbor (MIH) located in Central Taiwan. The metal concentrations in seawater (dissolved and particulate phases), sediment and oyster samples collected within the MIH were analyzed to examine the green oysters. The dissolved and particulate metal concentrations ranged within 0.008–1.47μgl−1 and 0.97–799.2mgkg−1, respectively. The Cu concentration in seawater was dominated in the dissolved phase. In contrast, Cr, Pb and Zn in seawater were chiefly present in the particulate phase. The metal concentrations in sediment and oyster samples ranged within 0.02–148.4mgkg−1 and 0.18–1238mgkg−1 (dry W.), respectively. No anomalous values were found in the analyzed samples, except the Cu content in the oyster samples ranged within 274–1238mgkg−1. The relatively high bioconcentration factor of Cu in oyster and the longer exposure time induced the green oysters occurred within the MIH.

Uptake and biological effects of synthetic glucocorticoids (GCs) were analyzed using common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish were exposed to clobetasol propionate (CP) or clobetasone butyrate (CB) individually or in mixture at 1μgL−1 for 21days. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) of CB was calculated as 100, and BCF of CP was less than 16. No effects were found in fish erythrocyte and leukocyte numbers and serum glucose levels after exposure to the selected GCs. On the other hand, serum concentrations of free amino acids significantly increased in GC-exposed groups. Thus, exposures to synthetic GCs at relatively low concentrations seemed to cause enhancement of protein degradation and subsequent increase of serum free amino acids without a corresponding increase in serum glucose levels, an effect which might be related to partial induction of gluconeogenesis by GC.

Estuarine environments are particularly vulnerable to human impacts. In this study, trace elements in Ruppia megacarpa, Halophila ovalis, sediment and porewater were analysed to assess the potential contamination of the Leschenault Estuary, Western Australia, from a primarily agricultural drain. Sediment concentrations of Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni and were highest nearest the drain while Al, As, Cr, Fe and Zn and were highest further from the drain. H. ovalis showed greater accumulation of Fe, Al, and As than R. megacarpa. Concentrations of Fe, Al, As, and Ni were generally higher in below-ground plant parts than above, suggesting uptake of these trace elements via the sediment-route pathway. This study suggested that the drain was a source of Cu and Mn, with these elements entering the estuary through water inflows. As and Fe, were highest furthest from the drain suggesting input of trace elements from sources other than the drain under study.
