Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) promote cyanobacteria dominating eutrophicated waters, with aquatic plant decrease and even disappearance. To uncover the toxic mechanism of cyanobacterial VOCs on aquatic plants, we investigated the growth, photosynthetic pigment levels, photosynthetic abilities and related gene expression in duckweed treated with β-cyclocitral and β-ionone, 2 main components in the VOCs. The levels of chlorophylls and carotenoids gradually declined with raising the concentration of the 2 compounds and prolonging the treatment time. Their decline should result from the down-regulation of 8 genes associated with photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis and up-regulation of 2 genes involved in carotenoid degradation. The reduction was also found in the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and O₂ evolution rate, which should result from the lowered photosynthetic pigment levels and down-regulation of 38 genes related with photosynthetic process. The frond numbers, total frond area and fresh weight gradually decreased with raising the 2 compound concentration, which may result from the lowered photosynthetic abilities as well as down-regulated expression of 7 genes associated with growth-promoting hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction. It can be speculated that cyanobacterial VOCs may poison aquatic plants by lowering the photosynthesis and growth through altering related gene expression.

Bibliometric network analysis has revealed that the widespread distribution of microplastics (MPs) has detrimental effects on marine organisms; however, the combined effects of MPs and climate change (e.g., warming) is not well understood. In this study, Prorocentrum donghaiense, a typical red tide species in the East China Sea, was exposed to different MP concentrations (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg L⁻¹) and temperatures (16, 22, and 28 °C) for 7 days to investigate the combined effects of MPs and simulated ocean warming by measuring different physiological parameters, such as cell growth, pigment contents (chlorophyll a and carotenoid), relative electron transfer rate (rETR), reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The results demonstrated that MPs significantly decreased cell growth, pigment contents, and rETRₘₐₓ, but increased the MDA, ROS, and SOD levels for all MP treatments at low temperature (16 °C). However, high temperatures (22 and 28 °C) increased the pigment contents and rETRₘₐₓ, but decreased the SOD and MDA levels. Positive and negative effects of high temperatures (22 or 28 °C) were observed at low (1 and 5 mg L⁻¹) and high MP (10 mg L⁻¹) concentrations, respectively, indicating the antagonistic and synergistic effects of combined warming and MP pollution. These results imply that the effects of MPs on microalgae will likely not be substantial in future warming scenarios if MP concentrations are controlled at a certain level. These findings expand the current knowledge of microalgae in response to increasing MP pollution in future warming scenarios.

An emerging stress of pesticides in plant and soil is closely watched as it affects crop antioxidant systems, nutritional quality, and flavor. Although selenium (Se) can enhance the resistance of plants, the protective mechanism of nanoselenium is still not known under the long-term pesticide stress in tea trees. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of foliar application of nanoselenium for a two-year field experiment on tea plants under pesticide-induced oxidative stress. Compared to control, nano-Se (10 mg/L) markedly enhanced the protein, soluble sugar, carotenoid, tea polyphenols, and catechins contents. High levels of theanine, glutamic acid, proline, and arginine were found to be induced most likely by adjusting the GS-GOGAT cycle. Se-supplementation may promote tea leaves’ secondary metabolism, thus increasing the accumulation of total phenols and flavonoids (apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, and rutin). It also minimized the accumulation of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anion by activating the antioxidants enzymes including in the AsA-GSH cycle. Selenium-rich tea also showed better fragrance and flavor. In summary, nano-Se can ameliorate the nutrients quality and abiotic stresses resistance of crops.

Currently, there is a lack of information about the influence of foliar-applied nanoplastics on crop growth and nutritional quality. To fill the knowledge gap, soil-grown lettuces (Lactuca sativa L.) were foliar-exposed to polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) at 0, 0.1 and 1 mg/L for one month. Foliar exposure to PSNPs significantly decreased the dry weight, height, and leaf area of lettuce by 14.3%–27.3%, 24.2%–27.3%, and 12.7%–19.2%, respectively, compared with the control. Similarly, plant pigment content (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid) was considerably reduced (9.1%, 8.7%, 12.5%) at 1 mg/L PSNPs. However, the significant increase in electrolyte leakage rate (18.6%–25.5%) and the decrease in total antioxidant capacity (12.4%–26%) were the key indicators of oxidative stress in lettuce leaves, demonstrating the phytotoxicity of PSNPs by foliar exposure. In addition, the remarkable reduction in micronutrients and essential amino acids demonstrated a decrease in nutritional quality of lettuce caused by PSNPs. Besides, SEM and TEM analysis indicated the possible absorption of PSNPs through leaves stoma and the translocation downwards to plant roots. This study provides new information about the interaction of airborne NPs with plants. It also warns against atmospheric NPs pollution that the adverse effects of airborne NPs on crop production and food quality should be assessed as a matter of urgency.

Polyacrylonitrile polymer (PAN), a common representative textile material and a microplastic, has significant influence on phytoplankton algae, especially with co-exposure with other pollutants, e.g. Cu²⁺. In the present study, we carried out experiments to reveal the population size variation trends of Chlorella pyrenoidosa over time (during a whole growth cycle of 6 days) under PAN and/or Cu²⁺. The levels of pigments (chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll and carotenoids), chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, and other physiological and biochemical indices, containing total protein measurements of H₂O₂, catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) under different treatment groups were measured to explain the physio-ecological mechanism of the effect of PAN and/or Cu²⁺ on the growth of C. pyrenoidosa. The results showed that PAN, Cu²⁺ and the combination of PAN and Cu²⁺ inhibited the growth of C. pyrenoidosa. Chlorophyll a and b decreased significantly with increasing levels of pollutants (PAN and/or Cu²⁺); however, the carotenoid levels increased with increasing levels of pollutants (PAN and/or Cu²⁺) for the first three cultivation days. The oxygen-evolving complexes (OECs) of C. pyrenoidosa had been damaged under Cu²⁺ pollution. The results also showed that CAT activity, MDA content and H₂O₂ activity of C. pyrenoidosa increased with increasing levels of pollutants (PAN and/or Cu²⁺); however, total protein content decreased with increasing levels of pollutants (PAN and/or Cu²⁺) at the first cultivation day. These results indicate that pollutants (PAN and/or Cu²⁺) are harmful to the growth of the C. pyrenoidosa population and negatively affect the levels and function of the pigments in C. pyrenoidosa by decreasing chlorophyll a and b levels, increasing carotenoid levels, and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity.

Phosphorus (P) plays a critical role in eutrophication and algal growth; therefore, improving our understanding of the impact of P is essential to control harmful algal blooms. In this study, Microcystis aeruginosa was treated with 5-h ambient irradiation in the medium with different dissolved inorganic P (DIP) concentrations, DIP-free, moderate-DIP, and high-DIP, to explore its growth and other physiological responses. Compared to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), UV-A (320–400 nm) and UV-B (280–320 nm) radiation had inhibitive effects on the photosynthesis and growth of M. aeruginosa, while high P availability could alleviate or eliminate the negative effects of UV radiation. The photosynthetic parameters had a minimum reduction and quickly recovered after re-inoculation under high-DIP conditions. Confirmed by SEM, photosynthetic pigments, the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and other methods, ambient UV radiation exerted oxidative stresses rather than direct lethal effects on M. aeruginosa. Photosynthetic parameters indicated that algal UV-adaptation processes could include decreasing photo-induced damages and increasing self-repair efficiency. The P acquired by M. aeruginosa cells can have two function, which included alleviating UV-induced negative effects and sustaining algal growth. Consequently, UV-adaptation processes of M. aeruginosa resulted in an elevated demand for DIP, which resulted to increased P uptake rates and cellular P quota under moderate and high-DIP conditions. Therefore, the production of carotenoid and phycocyanin, and SOD activity increased under UV stress, leading to a better adaptation capability of M. aeruginosa and decreased negative effects of UV radiation on its growth. Overall, our findings demonstrated the significant interactive effects of P enrichment and irradiation on typical cyanobacteria, and the strong adaptation capability of M. aeruginosa in the eutrophic UV-radiated waters.

Growing evidence suggests that anthropogenic noise has deleterious effects on the behavior and physiology of free-living animals. These effects may be particularly pronounced early in life, when developmental trajectories are sensitive to stressors, yet studies investigating developmental effects of noise exposure in free-living populations remain scarce. To elucidate the effects of noise exposure during development, we examined whether noise exposure is associated with shorter telomeres, duller carotenoid-based coloration and reduced body mass in nestlings of a common urban bird, the great tit (Parus major). We also assessed how the noise environment is related to reproductive success. We obtained long-term measurements of the noise environment, over a ∼24-h period, and characterized both the amplitude (measured by LAₑq, LA₉₀, LA₁₀, LAₘₐₓ) and variance in noise levels, since more stochastic, as well as louder, noise regimes might be more likely to induce stress. In our urban population, noise levels varied substantially, with louder, but less variable, noise characteristic of areas adjacent to a highway. Noise levels were also highly repeatable, suggesting that individuals experience consistent differences in noise exposure. The amplitude of noise near nest boxes was associated with shorter telomeres among smaller, but not larger, brood members. In addition, carotenoid chroma and hue were positively associated with variance in average and maximum noise levels, and average reflectance was negatively associated with variance in background noise. Independent of noise, hue was positively related to telomere length. Nestling mass and reproductive success were unaffected by noise exposure. Results indicate that multiple dimensions of the noise environment, or factors associated with the noise environment, could affect the phenotype of developing organisms, that noise exposure, or correlated variables, might have the strongest effects on sensitive groups of individuals, and that carotenoid hue could serve as a signal of early-life telomere length.

Pharmacologically active compounds found in reclaimed wastewater irrigation or animal manure fertilizers pose potential risks for agriculture. The mechanism underlying the effects of ketoprofen on rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was investigated. The results showed that low concentrations (0.5 mg L⁻¹) of ketoprofen slightly stimulate growth of rice seedlings, while high concentrations can significantly inhibit growth by reducing biomass and causing damage to roots. Ketoprofen affects photosynthetic pigment content (Chla, Chlb, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll synthesis gene (HEMA, HEMG, CHLD, CHLG, CHLM, and CAO) expression. Fluorescence parameters such as minimum fluorescence (F₀), maximum fluorescence (Fₘ), variable fluorescence (Fᵥ), potential photosynthetic capacity (Fᵥ/F₀), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fᵥ/Fₘ), electron transfer rate (ETR), and Y(II), Y(NPQ), Y(NO) values were affected, showing photosynthetic electron transfer was blocked. Active oxygen radical (O₂•−and H₂O₂), malondialdehyde and proline content increased. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities, glutathione content and antioxidant-related gene (FSD1, MSD1, CSD1, CSD2, CAT1, CAT2, CAT3, APX1, APX2) expression were induced. Higher integrated biomarker response values of eight oxidative stress response indexes were obtained at higher ketoprofen concentrations. Ultrastructure observation showed that ketoprofen causes cell structure damage, chloroplast swelling, increase in starch granules, and reduction in organelles. This study provides some suggested toxicological mechanisms and biological response indicators in rice due to stress from pharmacologically active compounds.

In this study, we investigated the physiological and photochemical influences of nanoTiO2 exposure on tomato plants (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). Tomato plants were exposed to 100 mg L−1 of nanoTiO2 for 90 days in a hydroponic system. Light irradiances of 135 and 550 μmolphoton m−2 s−1 were applied as environmental stressors that could affect uptake of nanoTiO2. To quantify nanoTiO2 accumulation in plant bodies and roots, we used transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and X-ray powder diffraction. Phenotypic and physiological influences such as color change, growth rate, fruit productivity, pigment concentration, and enzyme activity (SOD, CAT, APX) were monitored. We observed numerous effects caused by high irradiance and nanoTiO2 exposure, such as rapid chlorophyll decrease, increased anthocyanin and carotenoid concentrations, high enzymatic activity, and an approximately eight-fold increase in fruit production. Moreover, light absorption in the nanoTiO2-treated tomato plants, as measured by a ultraviolet–visible light spectrometer, increased by a factor of approximately 19, likely due to natural pigments that worked as sensitizers, and this resulted in an ∼120% increase in photochemical activities on A, ФPSII, ФCO2, gsw, and E.
