Riverine carbon (C) composition and export are closely related to changes in the coastal environment and climate. Excessive C inputs from rivers to seas and their subsequent decomposition could result in harmful algal blooms and ecosystem degradation in the coastal sea. In this study, we explored the C transportation and composition in the 24 major rivers of the Bohai Sea (BS) Rim based on the investigation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), carbon stable isotopes (δ¹³CDOC) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The results showed that the riverine DOC concentrations were high (10.6 ± 6.04 mg/L) in the BS Rim compared with the DOC levels in the main rivers in Eastern China (4.98 ± 2.45 mg/L). The δ¹³CDOC ranged from −28.29‰ to −25.32‰ in the rivers of the BS Rim, suggesting that the DOC mainly originated from riverine plankton, soil organic matter mainly induced by C3 plants, and sewage. The excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy of the CDOM indicated that a soluble, microbial by product-like material accounted for the largest proportion (approximately 40%) of CDOM in these rivers and that CDOM mainly originated from autochthonous riverine sources with high protein-like components. The rivers in the BS Rim transported approximately 0.55 Tg C of DOC to the BS each year, with more than 70% of reactive C based on the CDOM composition. The DOC yields in terms of unit drainage area transported from the small rivers to the BS were higher compared to those of the larger rivers in the world, which indicated that the small rivers in the Bohai Rim could be an important source of the C in the BS. This study would enrich our understanding of environmental evolution in coastal areas with numerous small rivers.

As a redox-sensitive element, manganese (Mn) plays a critical role in Cd mobilization, especially in paddy soil. In an anoxic environment, the precipitation of Mn(II)-hydroxides specifically favors Cd retention, while draining the paddy fields results in substantial remobilization of Cd. However, how the change in Mn redox states during the periodical transit of anoxic to oxic systems affects Cd mobility remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that the radical effect generated during the oxidation of Mn(II)-hydroxides exerts a significant effect on the oxidative dissolution of Cd during the aeration of paddy soils. The extractable Cd concentration decreased rapidly during the reduction phases but increased upon oxidation, while Cd availability produced the opposite effect with soil pe + pH and the extractable Mn concentration. Inhibiting the oxidation of Mn(II)-containing phases by microbes suppressed the production of hydroxyl free radicals (•OH) and Cd mobilization in the drainage phase. Analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and sequential extraction demonstrated that the transformation from the Mn phase of Mn(II) to Mn(III/IV) determines Cd solubility. Altogether, the oxidization of Mn(II)-hydroxides was associated with the generation of significant amounts of •OH. The dissolution of Mn(II)- incorporating phases lead to a net release of Cd into soils during soil aeration.

High-density culturing with excessive feeding of commercial feed has caused heavy metals pollution to agricultural production system. In this study, the dynamic changes and transfer of heavy metals in rice-crayfish coculture system (RCCS) and crayfish intensive culture system (CICS) within a completed culture cycle were systematically quantified. Our results showed that Cd in feed represented more than 50% of the total Cd input, and the inputs of As and Cr were mainly from irrigation. The residues of As and Pb in RCCS were slightly higher than those in CICS, while the residues of Cd and Cr in RCCS were far fewer than those in CICS. Moreover, the metal pollution index in CICS was 0.781, while it was 0.543 in the RCCS. Furthermore, a large proportion of the Cd and Pb in CICS was released into the external environment through drainage. Notably, the absorption and solidification of heavy metals by straw did not increase the residues of As and Pb in the major components of RCCS in the second year. Compared to CICS, RCCS did not produce many heavy metal residues or cause heavy metal discharge pressure on the external environment, and its food product had a low risk of heavy metal contamination.

Amoxicillin (AMO) and amikacin (AMK) are broad-spectrum antibiotics that are most preferably given post-delivery (normal and cesarian) in the maternity hospitals located in Sagar city (Madhya Pradesh), India. Both the antibiotics make their way through sewage/drainage systems into the environment in the form of metabolized and unmetabolized compounds. Growing concern about the contamination of wastewater by antibiotics requires fast, sensitive and eco-friendly techniques. Therefore a simple, rapid and environmental friendly chromatographic method has been developed for simultaneous determination of AMO and AMK in maternity hospital wastewater samples. A micellar liquid chromatographic (MLC) method was developed with a C₁₈ column (250 mm × 4.6 mm), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS; 0.15 M), 1-butanol (7%) as a modifier, pH 5 and photo diode detector (PDA) at 270 nm and 256 nm for AMO and AMK respectively. The method was fast with analysis time below 9 min. In the present MLC method, linearities (r > 0.998), limits of quantification in the range of 0.02–0.04 μg/mL, repeatabilities, and intermediate precision below 4.9% were adequate for the quantification of AMO and AMK. The proposed method can be utilized to detect and quantify both the antibiotics in various samples by hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, pollution control board, municipal corporations, etc.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil often results in elevated Cd concentrations in rice grain, which is a serious concern threatening food safety. Most of the Cd accumulated in rice grain is derived from its remobilization in paddy soil during the grain filling period when paddy water is drained. We have previously shown that the voltaic cell effect controls the oxidative release of cadmium sulfide (CdS) during the drainage period. Metal sulfides with lower electrochemical potentials than CdS can suppress the oxidation of CdS. In the present study, we tested whether amendments of ZnSO₄ or MnSO₄ could enhance the suppressive voltaic effect on Cd release and subsequent accumulation in rice grain. The one-time addition of ZnSO₄ (75 kg/ha Zn) decreased CaCl₂-extractable Cd concentrations in soils by 32–64% in pot experiments and by 16–30% in field trials during the drainage period. Consequently, Cd concentrations in brown rice were reduced by 74–87% and 60–72% in pot experiments and field trials, respectively. Importantly, this effect persisted in the second year without further addition. The amendment of MnSO₄ had similar effects in decreasing soil extractable Cd and Cd concentrations in brown rice. These effects were not attributed to the addition of sulfate. A single application of such doses of ZnSO₄ or MnSO₄ (e.g. 75–150 kg/ha Zn or Mn) only caused a marginal increase in soil Zn or Mn concentrations and had no significant impact on grain yield. Taken together, amendments of ZnSO₄ and/or MnSO₄ (at the rate of 75–150 kg/ha Zn and or Mn) formed a protective voltaic cell partner against the oxidative dissolution of CdS and thus were highly effective in reducing Cd accumulation in rice grain. This work provides a simple but effective method to decrease soil Cd availability during soil drainage and mitigate Cd accumulation in rice to ensure food safety.

The increasing salinization of groundwater renders it challenging to maintain the water quality. Moreover, knowledge regarding the characteristics and mechanism of groundwater salinization in mining areas remains limited. This study represents the first attempt of combining the hydrochemical, isotope (δD, δ¹⁸O, δ³⁷Cl, and ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) and multivariate statistical analysis methods to explore the origin, control, and influence of fluoride enrichment in mining cities. The TDS content of groundwater ranged from 275.9 mg/L to 2452.0 mg/L, and 54% of the groundwater samples were classified as class IV water according to China's groundwater quality standards (GB/T 14848–2017), indicating a decline in the water quality of the study area. The results of the groundwater ion ratio and isotope discrimination analysis showed that dissolution and evaporation involving water-rock interactions and halite were the main driving processes for groundwater salinization in the study area. In addition to the hydrogeological and climatic conditions, mine drainage inputs exacerbated the increasing salinity of the groundwater in local areas. The mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation promoted the F⁻ enrichment, while excessive evaporation and salinity inhibited the F⁻ enrichment. Gangue accumulation and infiltration likely led to considerable F⁻ enrichment in individual groundwater regions. Extensive changes in the groundwater salinity indicated differences in the geochemical processes that controlled the groundwater salinization. Given the particularity of the study area, the enrichment of salinization and fluoride triggered by mining activities cannot be ignored.

Precious metal mining activities have left complex environmental legacies in lakes around the world, including some sites in climatically sensitive regions of the Canadian sub-Arctic. Here, we examined the long-term impacts of past regional gold mining activities on sub-Arctic lakes near Con Mine (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) based on sediment core analysis (paleolimnology). In addition to receiving metal(loid)s from roaster stack emissions, the study lakes were also influenced by salt-rich mine drainage from Con Mine tailings. Water samples from these lakes had some of the highest concentrations for salinity-related variables (e.g. Ca²⁺, Cl⁻, Na⁺) and metal(loid)s (e.g. As, Cu, Ni, Sb) in the Yellowknife area. Furthermore, the presence of halophilic diatom (Bacillariophyceae) taxa (Achnanthes thermalis and Navicula incertata) in the recent sediments of Keg and Peg lakes suggest that the extreme saline conditions are strongly influencing the present biota, more than 10 years after the cessation of gold mining activities at Con Mine. The sedimentary metal(loid) profiles (e.g. As, Cu, Ni) of Kam Lake tracked the influence of regional gold mining activities, particularly those at Con Mine, while the algal assemblages recorded the biological responses to salinization and metal(loid) pollution (e.g. marked decreases in diatom species richness, Hill’s N2 diversity, and chrysophyte cyst:diatom valve ratio). At Kam Lake, the algal assemblage changes in the post-mining era were indicative of climate-mediated changes to lake thermal properties (e.g. rise in planktonic diatoms), nutrient enrichment related to urbanization (e.g. increase in eutrophic Stephanodisucs taxa), and/or a combination of both stressors. The lack of biological recovery (i.e. return to pre-mining assemblages) is consistent with investigations of mine-impacted lakes in temperate regions where elevated contaminant levels and emerging stressors (e.g. climate warming, land-use changes) are influencing lake recovery.

Pore water is a crucial storage medium and a key source of sediment phosphorus. A novel equipment based on electrokinetic geosynthetics (EKGs) was used for isolating phosphorus from eutrophic lake sediments through pore water drainage. Three mutually independent indoor group experiments (A, B, and C) were conducted to investigate the effects of voltage gradient (0.00, 0.25, and 0.50 V/cm) on pore water drainage capacity, phosphorus removal performance, sediment physicochemical properties, and phosphorus storage dynamics. The average reduction in the sediment moisture and total phosphorus content was 2.5%, 4.3%, and 4.6% and 28.15, 75.95, and 112.65 mg/kg after 6 days of treatment for A, B and C, respectively. Efficient pore water drainage through gravity and electroosmotic flow and electromigration of phosphate were the main drivers of sediment-dissolved and mobilized phosphorus separation. A high voltage gradient facilitated the migration of pore water and the phosphorus in it. The maximal effluent total phosphorous (TP) concentration was up to 27.9 times that in the initial pore water samples, and negligible effluent TP was detected when the pore water pH was less than 2.5. The TP concentration was exponentially and linearly related to the pH and electronic conductivity of the electroosmotic flow, respectively. The migration of H⁺ within the sediment matrix promoted the liberation of metals bounded to phosphorus, particularly of Ca–P and Fe–P. Pore water drainage through an EKG resulted in Ex–P separation of up to 87.50% and a 13.84 mg/kg decrease in Ca–P and 125.35 mg/kg accumulation of low mobile Fe–P in the weak acid anode zone.

In order to investigate the impacts of dam-related water impoundment on the spatial-temporal variations and transport of anthropogenic organic pollutants, 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in water samples from the Shuikou Reservoir (SKR) of the Minjiang River. The SKR was formed after the construction of the Shuikou Dam, which is the largest hydropower station in Southeast China. The water samples were collected from the backwater zone of the SKR, in both the wet and dry seasons, corresponding to the drainage and impoundment periods of water flow, respectively. The concentrations of the dissolved PAHs in surface water from the wet season (average of 161 ± 97 ng L⁻¹) were significantly higher (ANOVA, p < 0.01) than those from the dry season (average of 43 ± 21 ng L⁻¹). PAH concentrations in the SKR decreased from upstream (industrialized cities) to downstream (rural towns or counties), indicating high PAH loads caused by intensive urbanization effects. The high proportions of 3-ring PAHs in the wet season were from local sources via surface runoff; while the elevated proportions of 4- to 6- ring PAHs in the dry season reflected atmospheric deposition emerged of these PAHs and/or volatilization of 3-ring PAHs enhanced. Molecular diagnostic ratios of PAH isomers in multimedium and principal component analysis indicated that PAH presence in the SKR was mainly attributed to pyrogenic origin. The isomeric ratios of fluoranthene to fluoranthene plus pyrene in the wet season were homogeneous, implying that there were continuous new inputs along the riverine runoff. However, these ratios showed spatial downward trend in the dry season, indicating continued degradation of PAHs occurred along the transport path during the impoundment period. The input and output fluxes of PAHs in the SKR were 5330 kg yr⁻¹ and 2991 kg yr⁻¹, revealing that the reservoir retained contaminants after impoundment of the hydropower dam.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are a threat to human life. Recently, sewers have been identified as potential reservoirs. The intermittent injection of sewage into adjacent surface waters is inevitable, due to capacity limitations of the urban drainage system. Information regarding the effect to natural freshwater biofilms (NFB) due to the intermittent contaminations are scarce. Therefore, a fundamental screening is necessary. In April, we placed NFB-attachment constructions in a brook upstream and downstream from urban drainage overflow constructions. In meanwhile two sampling campaigns were conducted. The sewage and the brook water were collected to gather information about antibiotic background exposure of ciprofloxacin (CIP), clarithromycin (CLA) and doxycycline (DOX). Six months later we experimentally determined the oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the NFB-communities after a 24 h lasting exposure with additionally dosed antibiotics. Concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 mg L⁻¹ were selected. CIP, CLA and DOX were individually dosed, and also in mixtures. The mean antibiotic background concentration in sewage was in a range of 575.5–1289.1 ng L⁻¹, which mainly exceeded the concentrations published in literature. The determined mean concentration in the brook was in a range of 4.6–539.0 ng L⁻¹. The first significant inhibition of the OUR with individually dosed antibiotics started mainly at a concentration of 1.0 mg L⁻¹. Antibiotics in a mixture with concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg L⁻¹ were as effective as single dosed antibiotics with a concentration of 10.0 mg L⁻¹. The increased antibiotic tolerance and resistance of NFB-communities downstream of the combined sewer overflow (CSO) structure was a consequence of a severe impact due to urban drainage overflows. Hence, NFB-communities downstream of CSO-constructions are hot spots of antibiotic tolerant and resistant subpopulations and access restrictions should be announced, if an infection risk is present.
