The Bohai Sea, one of the largest marginal seas in China, is extensively influenced by human and industrial activities. The pollutant loads from anthropogenic activities have induced severe ecological problems. The study investigates the physicochemical characteristics of seawater and sediments in Bohai Bay and Laizhou Bay of the Bohai Sea. The diversity and composition of microbial community in sediments are analyzed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The sequencing results present 16 phyla and 31 classes from the samples. Proteobacteria constituted a dominant phylum, of which the classes of Gamma-, Delta-, and Epsilon-are predominant sub-divisions. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling related microbes present high abundance in both bays. The metabolism of organic matters is the main factor that influences the distribution of microbial communities in Bohai Bay, while the inflow of Yellow River is the dominant factor that influences the distribution of microbial communities in Laizhou Bay. Sulfur oxidizing process is expected to be positively influenced by heavy metals, while ammonia (NH4+) oxidizing process is prone to be negatively affected by heavy metals in both bays. Microbial communities in the offshore sediments of Laizhou Bay and the majority microbial communities in Bohai Bay sediments are subject to similar predominant controlling factors. This phenomenon is likely ascribed to ocean circulation. The results of this study can provide constructive guidelines on ecosystem management of marginal seas in Bohai and elsewhere.

Coastal zone is of great importance in the provision of various valuable ecosystem services. However, it is also sensitive and vulnerable to environmental changes due to high human populations and interactions between the land and ocean. Major threats of pollution from over enrichment of nutrients, increasing metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and climate change have led to severe ecological degradation in the coastal zone, while few studies have focused on the combined impacts of pollution and climate change on the coastal ecosystems at the global level. A global overview of nutrients, metals, POPs, and major environmental changes due to climate change and their impacts on coastal ecosystems was carried out in this study. Coasts of the Eastern Atlantic and Western Pacific were hotspots of concentrations of several pollutants, and mostly affected by warming climate. These hotspots shared the same features of large populations, heavy industry and (semi-) closed sea. Estimation of coastal ocean capital, integrated management of land-ocean interaction in the coastal zone, enhancement of integrated global observation system, and coastal ecosystem-based management can play effective roles in promoting sustainable management of coastal marine ecosystems. Enhanced management from the perspective of mitigating pollution and climate change was proposed.

Ocean acidification (OA) is a global problem to marine ecosystems. Cadmium (Cd) is a typical metal pollutant, which is non-essential but extremely toxic to marine organisms. The combined effects of marine pollution and climate-driven ocean changes should be considered for the effective marine ecosystem management of coastal areas. Previous reports have separately investigated the influences of OA and Cd pollution on marine organisms. However, little is known of the potential combined effects of OA and Cd pollution on marine diatoms. We investigated the sole and combined influences of OA (1500 ppm CO₂) and Cd exposure (0.4 and 1.2 mg/L) on the coastal diatom Skeletonema costatum. Our results clearly showed that OA significantly alleviated the toxicity of Cd to S. costatum growth and mitigated the oxidant stress, although the intercellular Cd accumulation still increased. OA partially rescued S. costatum from the inhibition of photosynthesis and pyruvate metabolism caused by Cd exposure. It also upregulated genes involved in gluconeogenesis, glycolysis, the citrate cycle (TCA), Ribonucleic acid (RNA) metabolism, and especially the biosynthesis of non-protein thiol compounds. These changes might contribute to algal growth and Cd resistance. Overall, this study demonstrates that OA can alleviate Cd toxicity to S. costatum and explores the potential underlying mechanisms at both the cellular and molecular levels. These results will ultimately help us understand the impacts of combined stresses of climate change and metal pollution on marine organisms and expand the knowledge of the ecological risks of OA.

Small heterotrophic protists (flagellates and naked amoebae) are very abundant in soil and play a key role in maintaining soil services. Hence, knowledge on how xenobiotics affect these organisms is essential in ecosystem management. Cadmium (Cd) is an increasing environmental issue as both industrial deposition and recycling of heavy metal rich waste products have led to Cd enrichment of soils. Evaluation of toxicity of Cd to micro-organisms is often performed using a solution of pure Cd (e.g. CdCl) in liquid culture. This approach may be highly misleading as interactions between Cd and other substances, e.g. various ions or inherent soil components often strongly modify Cd toxicity. Hence, we compared the toxic effect of Cd to small heterotrophic protists in soil microcosms and liquid culture. We also evaluated how zinc (Zn) affects Cd toxicity, as Zn usually accompanies Cd in a ratio of c. 100:1, and is known to impede Cd toxicity. In the soil microcosms, we also monitored the primary food source of the protists, i.e. culturable bacteria, and used soil respiration as a proxy of soil functioning. Finally, we examined to what extent Cd actually sorbs to soil. We found 1) that c. 10³ times more Cd was required to obtain the same effect in the soil microcosms compared to the liquid culture, 2) that soil sorption explains why Cd, even though highly toxic in aqueous solutions, has very limited effect when applied to soil, and 3) (very surprisingly) that in our experimental systems Zn was as toxic as Cd. Our study suggests that Cd toxicity to soil protists will be small because most Cd in soil will be sorbed to the soil matrix and because the Zn:Cd ratio of 100:1 in most substances, incl. pollutants, will mean that lethal Zn effects will occur before Cd reaches toxic levels.

This study presents the results of field experiments that were designed to investigate the photophysiological characteristics of microphytobenthos (MPB) and to estimate primary production (PP) in Daebu mudflat, which is located at the west coast of Korea. A typical seasonal (or monthly) fluctuation of intertidal MPB PP was found in association with biotic (benthic Chl-a) and/or abiotic parameters (irradiance and temperature) over a period of three years. From a series of field-laboratory experiments using the oxygen micro-profiling method (totaling 28 surveys), three consistent phenomena were observed: 1) winter to early spring algal blooms, 2) seasonal changes in Q10, and 3) temperature dependent MPB photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I). In particular, both the chlorophyll-specific maximum photosynthetic capacity (Pbmax) and the saturated light intensity (Ik), derived from 126 P-I curves (1870 data sets of oxygen micro-profiling in the sediment), were significantly correlated with sediment temperature (p < 0.01). To develop an empirical MPB PP model, the relationships between P-I parameters and environmental variables were parameterized following established exponential forms (e.g., Q10). It was possible to estimate the MPB PP in Daebu mudflat area by using easily accessible explanatory factor, suitable to be used for future explorations of parameters such as sediment temperature, irradiance, chlorophyll concentration, and tidal height. The estimated annual MPB PP based on the empirical PP model were found to be greater than that in the Wadden Sea and average annual PP in the temperate zones of the world. Authors believe that the present approach of the MPB PP estimation could be combined with remote-sensing techniques (e.g., satellites) to support coastal ecosystem management.

Characterizing benthic habitat sensitivities of rapidly-developing countries is of paramount importance. Recent efforts defining the benthic habitat of Qatar's coastal zone with a high-resolution, ground-truthed benthic habitat map has provided a framework on which to develop a habitat sensitivity map. Here we present a sensitivity analysis catered towards identifying habitats with varying sensitivities to natural and anthropogenic stressors on a quantitative scale from 1 to 5, low to high. We have identified that the majority of the coastal area is low risk habitat (i.e. sandflats). However, there are six areas which are assigned as high risk by virtue of their rich occurrences of seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, and coral reefs - [1]. The reefs offshore of Al Zubarah on the west coast of the peninsula; [2] The Al Ruwais fringing reef on the northern tip of the peninsula; [3] The east-coast bays of Al Khor and Al Dhakira; [4] The shore-attached reef complex off Mesaieed (east coast); [5] The Jazirat al Bushayriyah offshore high; and, [6] The entire shelf of Halul Island. The sensitivity analysis presented here builds on a recently-developed benthic habitat map of Qatar's coastal zone and covers a total are of 4500km². Results gleaned from this analysis can be used to support marine spatial planning objectives and ecosystem-based management decision making.

A comprehensive, high resolution, ground truthed benthic habitat map has been completed for Qatar's coastal zone and Halul Island. The objectives of this research were to; 1. Systematically compare and contrast pixel- and object-based classifiers for benthic mapping in a limited focus area and then to, 2. Apply these learnings to develop an accurate high resolution benthic habitat map for the entirety of the Qatari coastal zone. Results indicate object-based methods proved more efficient and accurate when compared to pixel based classifiers. The developed country-wide map covers 4500 km² and underscores the complex interplay of seagrass, macroalgal, and reefal habitats, as well as areas of expansive mangrove forests and microbial mats. The map developed here is a first of its kind in the region. Many potential applications exist for the datasets collected to provide fundamental information that can be used for ecosystem-based management decision making.

The purpose of this study is to develop feasible tools to investigate the cumulative impact of reclamations on coastal ecosystem health, so that the strategies of ecosystem-based management can be applied in the coastal zone. An indicator system and model were proposed to assess the cumulative impact synthetically. Two coastal water bodies, namely Laizhou Bay (LZB) and Tianjin coastal waters (TCW), in the Bohai Sea of China were studied and compared, each in a different phase of reclamations. Case studies showed that the indicator scores of coastal ecosystem health in LZB and TCW were 0.75 and 0.68 out of 1.0, respectively. It can be concluded that coastal reclamations have a historically cumulative effect on benthic environment, whose degree is larger than that on aquatic environment. The ecosystem-based management of coastal reclamations should emphasize the spatially and industrially intensive layout.

The fallowing period is a management measure in aquaculture where the production is paused for a few months to reduce the impact on the benthic environment. We studied the effects of different fallowing periods on the recovery of macrofauna at two salmon farms in Norway. The macrofauna at the farm stations were characterised by high abundances of opportunistic taxa (e.g. Capitella spp.), low diversity and significantly different community structure compared to reference sites. The fallowing initiated macrofauna recovery at both farm stations, indicated by a decline of dominant opportunistic taxa after 2months. Significant changes in taxa composition occurred only after 6months, although indications of disturbance were still evident. Surprisingly, no corresponding spatial or temporal differences were found in the sediment parameters such as redox, TOC and pH. The results suggest that macrofauna is a more sensitive indicator and that the seasonal timing of fallowing may affect recovery dynamics.

Algae-dominance in seagrass beds has been well recognized, however, the competitive relationship between seagrass and macroalgae along land-sea gradients and their ecological effects has received little attention. In this study, a field survey was conducted at the Yellow River Estuary to investigate the effects of macroalgal proliferation on seagrass and macrobenthic invertebrate communities. Our results suggested that strong competitive interaction existed between the two primary producers, and the positive or negative effects of macroalgae on seagrass growth varied along land-sea gradient. Furthermore, the dominant controlling factors on the biomass, density and diversity of macrobenthic invertebrate communities were found to vary accordingly, i.e., from features of the primary producers in the nearshore where macroalgae suppressed seagrass growth to hydrodynamic disturbance in the offshore where macroalgae facilitated seagrass growth. Our study emphasizes the importance to integrate interspecific competition into ecosystem-based management of seagrass ecosystem, and provides references for additional ecological indicators.
