The performances of aluminum chloride modified clay (AC-MC), aluminum sulfate modified clay (AS-MC) and polyaluminum chloride modified clay (PAC-MC) in the removal of Aureococcus anophagefferens were compared, and the potential mechanisms were analyzed according to the dispersion medium, suspension pH and clay surface charges. The results showed that AC-MC and AS-MC had better efficiencies in removing A.anophagefferens than PAC-MC. The removal mechanisms of the three modified clays varied. At optimal coagulation conditions, the hydrolysates of AC and AS were mainly monomers, and they transformed into Al(OH)3(am) upon their addition to algae culture, with the primary mechanism being sweep flocculation. The PAC mainly hydrolyzed to the polyaluminum compounds, which remained stable when added to the algae culture, and the flocculation mainly occurred through polyaluminum compounds. The suspension pH significantly influenced the aluminum hydrolysate and affected the flocculation between the modified clay and algae cells.

The rheology of digested sludge affects the flow hydrodynamics, dewaterability, and the polymer consumption in wastewater treatment plants. The rheological characteristics of digested sludge are highly dependent on changes in total solid concentration, temperature, and polymer dose. Hence, this study aims at investigating the impacts of total solid concentration, temperature, and polymer dose on the rheological characteristics and the dewaterability of digested sludge. Investigating the relationship between rheological and physicochemical characteristics of sludge can also serve as a tool to optimize essential process parameters. Different homogenized digested sludge samples were subjected to rheological measurement on rotational stress-controlled rheometer equipped with Peltier concentric cylinder system. The shear stress–shear rate and viscosity–shear rate curves were then developed before and after polymer conditioning at various temperatures and solid concentrations. Different rheological model were fitted to the shear stress–shear rate and viscosity–shear rate rheograms, and the model with the best fitting and more practical significance was selected to determine key rheological parameters. The relationship between dewaterability and digested sludge rheology was also developed. The rheological characteristics of digested sludge during polymer conditioning and flocculation process was significantly affected by temperature and solid concentration; hence, polymer dose can be reduced by operating the dewatering process at optimum temperature condition and varying the polydose as a function of the total solid concentration and viscosity of the digested sludge. The dewaterability as measured in capillary suction time (CST) improved with increasing polymer dose up to 12 kg/t DS but further increase in polymer dose resulted in the deterioration of the dewaterability due to overdosing.

The formation, breakage, and re-growth of flocs were investigated by using modified flocculation tests and numerical simulation to explore the evolution of floc morphology for different hydraulic retention times. The shorter the aggregation time was, the smaller the flocs produced for the same hydraulic conditions were. Another interesting discovery was that broken flocs that formed in shorter aggregation time had the capacity to completely recover, whereas those formed in a longer amount of time had rather worse reversibility of broken flocs. With the addition of the maximum motion step in the representative two-dimensional diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model, there was a transition for flocs from isotropic to anisotropic as the maximum motion step increased. The strength of flocs was mainly affected by the distribution of particles near the aggregated core rather than distant particles. A simplified breakage model, which found that broken flocs provided more chances for diffused particles to access the inner parts of flocs and to be uniformly packed around the aggregated core, was first proposed. Moreover, an important result showed that the floc fragments formed with a larger value of the maximum motion step had more growing sites than did those with a smaller msa value, which was a benefit of following the re-forming procedure.

The breakage and regrowth of flocs formed by sweep flocculation were investigated on different flocculation mechanisms using additional dosage coagulant of poly aluminium chloride (PACl) and non-ionic polyacrylamide (PAM) to explore the reversibility after floc breakage. The optimal dosage of PACl was 0.15 mM (as alum), and zeta potential exceeding 1 mV meant that sweep flocculation was dominant in the pre-flocculated process. Re-coagulation efficiency increased with additional coagulants dosing, and sedimentation rates of flocs re-formed by small additional dosage of non-ionic PAM are faster than that of flocs re-formed by additional PACl. For additional inorganic coagulant (PACl) during regrowth processes, few negatively charged particles that existed in water sample restricted the effect of charge neutralization. An amorphous aluminum hydroxide precipitation could re-activate the weaker points on the broken floc surface, but regrown flocs have loose structure indicating worse settleability. For additional non-ionic PAM dosing, lower dosage showed large values of fractal dimension and average size, probably due to that unfolded curly molecular chain and exposed amide groups of non-ionic PAM which provide superb conditions for amide group interacting with particles. The use of non-ionic PAM in flocculation has advantage of being more effective than the cationic PACl, probably because it may avoid the re-stabilization of broken flocs by polymer adsorption driven by electrostatic attraction. Hence, appropriate dosing of PAM after breakage could improve the flocs characteristics with large size and compact structure.

Poor flocculation of photo fermentative bacteria resulting in continuous biomass washout from photobioreactor is a critical challenge to achieve rapid and stable hydrogen production. In this work, the aggregation of Rhodopseudomonas faecalis RLD-53 was successfully developed in a photobioreactor and the effects of different carbon sources on hydrogen production and aggregation ability were investigated. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production by R. faecalis RLD-53 cultivated using different carbon sources were stimulated by addition of L-cysteine. The absolute ζ potentials of R. faecalis RLD-53 were considerably decreased with addition of L-cysteine, and aggregation barriers based on DLVO dropped to 15–43 % of that in control groups. Thus, R. faecalis RLD-53 flocculated effectively, and aggregation abilities of strain RLD-53 cultivated with acetate, propionate, lactate and malate reached 29.35, 32.34, 26.07 and 24.86 %, respectively. In the continuous test, hydrogen-producing activity was also promoted and reached 2.45 mol H₂/mol lactate, 3.87 mol H₂/mol propionate and 5.10 mol H₂/mol malate, respectively. Therefore, the aggregation of R. faecalis RLD-53 induced by L-cysteine is independent on the substrate types, which ensures the wide application of this technology to enhance hydrogen recovery from wastewater dominated by different organic substrates.

In the present study, magnetic seeding flocculation was applied to remove copper (200 mg/L) and turbidity (180 mg/L) from simulated microetch copper waste. Fe₃O₄ particles (40 to 1600 mesh) were used as magnetic seeds. Poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) were added as coagulant and flocculant, respectively. The effect of operating factors, such as the dosages of the coagulant and flocculant, initial pH of the wastewater, and dosage and size of the magnetic seeds, on copper and turbidity removal was systematically investigated. In addition, settling speed, floc-size distribution, and volume of sludge were measured with and without the addition of magnetic seeds to compare the efficiency of magnetic seeding to that of traditional flocculation. The results indicated that the highest settling speed, the largest floc size, and the smallest volume of sludge were obtained simultaneously when the dosage and size of magnetic seeds were 2.0 g/L and 300–400 mesh, respectively. High removal efficiencies of 98.53 and 94.72 % for copper and turbidity, respectively, were also achieved under this condition; values that are 4.11 and 0.61 % higher, respectively, than those found in traditional flocculation. The high performance might be attributed to efficient collision of particles and slightly moderate vortex centrifugal force of inertia among the magnetic seeds, which could produce larger magnetic flocs with lower moisture.

It is recognized that for successful establishment of a vegetation cover on bauxite residue disposal areas, soil formation and a greater understanding of the processes of soil development are crucial. The stability of microaggregates is a very important physical property that prevents erosion in bauxite residues. Samples were collected from a disposal area in Central China to determine not only the mechanism of aggregation but also clay dispersion. Colloidal stability was assessed by determining organic matter, carbonate, electrolyte, clay mineral, and iron-aluminum oxide forms, as these would contribute to their stability. Organic matter improved microaggregate stability by combining with clay particles and polyvalent cations to form macroaggregates. Polyvalent cations such as calcium had a positive effect on particle flocculation, while organic molecules were more effective at stabilizing microaggregates. Removal of salinity dispersed silt-size aggregates into clay-size aggregates and reduced microaggregate stability. Calcium improved particle aggregation, while sodium had the reverse effect. Quartz powder was added to the residues but did not show any cementing effect, while free and amorphous iron-aluminum oxides were effective binding agents for microaggregate formation. We propose that the presence of organic matter and polyvalent cations, together with incorporation of organic carbon and calcium minerals, may enhance the stability of this material and prove beneficial toward improving its physical condition.

In this work, to evaluate the effectiveness of the coagulation/flocculation using a natural coagulant, using Moringa oleifera Lam functionalized with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, producing flakes that are attracted by an external magnetic field, thereby allowing a fast settling and separation of the clarified liquid, is proposed. The removal efficiency of the parameters, apparent color, turbidity, and compounds with UV₂₅₄ₙₘ absorption, was evaluated. The magnetic functionalized M. oleifera Lam coagulant could effectively remove 90 % of turbidity, 85 % of apparent color, and 50 % for the compounds with absorption at UV₂₅₄ₙₘ, in surface waters under the influence of an external magnetic field within 30 min. It was found that the coagulation/flocculation treatment using magnetic functionalized M. oleifera Lam coagulant was able to reduce the values of the physico-chemical parameters evaluated with reduced settling time.
