Spatial and temporal variations in pentachlorophenol dissipation at the aerobic–anaerobic interfaces of flooded paddy soils

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) dissipation occurs naturally in flooded soils and although dissipation half-lives vary between soil profiles at the millimeter-scale the reason is poorly understood. Vertical variations of PCP dissipation were investigated in three typical Chinese paddy soils; Soil 1 (Umbraqualf), Soil 2 (Plinthudult) and Soil 3 (Tropudult). The soil depth was divided into a surface and a deep layer based upon different PCP dissipations in the surface layer of 40–93, 42–88 and 16–100% for Soils 1–3 respectively. In the deep layer, PCP was greatly dissipated in Soil 2, but much less in Soil 1 and Soil 3. Correlation analysis indicated that SO42− and Fe(III) were negatively related to PCP dissipation. SO42− and Cl- were highly mobile in the flooded soil profiles. Fe(III) reduction increased with increasing soil depth, and was inhibited by high SO42− concentrations.

Evidence from a multi-date regional-scale analysis of both high-flow and annual-average water quality data from Galloway, south-west Scotland, demonstrates that forest land cover continues to exacerbate freshwater acidification. This is in spite of significant reductions in airborne pollutants. The relationship between freshwater sulphate and forest cover has decreased from 1996 to 2006 indicating a decrease in pollutant scavenging. The relationship between forest cover and freshwater acidity (pH) is, however, still present over the same period, and does not show conclusive signs of having declined. Furthermore, evidence for forest cover contributing to a chlorine bias in marine ion capture suggests that forest scavenging of sea-salts may mean that the forest acidification effect may continue in the absence of anthropogenic pollutant inputs, particularly in coastal areas.

Spatially explicit estimates of critical loads of nitrogen (N) deposition (CLNdₑₚ) for nutrient enrichment in aquatic ecosystems were developed for the Rocky Mountains, USA, using a geostatistical approach. The lowest CLNdₑₚ estimates (<1.5 ± 1 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) occurred in high-elevation basins with steep slopes, sparse vegetation, and abundance of exposed bedrock and talus. These areas often correspond with areas of high N deposition (>3 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹), resulting in CLNdₑₚ exceedances ≥1.5 ± 1 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. CLNdₑₚ and CLNdₑₚ exceedances exhibit substantial spatial variability related to basin characteristics and are highly sensitive to the NO₃ ⁻ threshold at which ecological effects are thought to occur. Based on an NO₃ ⁻ threshold of 0.5 μmol L⁻¹, N deposition exceeds CLNdₑₚ in 21 ± 8% of the study area; thus, broad areas of the Rocky Mountains may be impacted by excess N deposition, with greatest impacts at high elevations.

Solid humic acid (HA) particles were dissolved and subsequently coated on a type of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Pb²⁺ sorption from water by the solid HA, the MWCNTs and the obtained HA-MWCNT complexes was compared. The underlying mechanism of the difference in the sorption was discussed with the data at different pHs, results of desorption in the presence and absence of Ca²⁺ and the characterizations using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The effect of MWCNT-contained impurities on the sorption was also examined. It was shown that the surface-bound HA introduced oxygen-containing functional groups and negative charges on the MWCNTs, thus greatly increasing Pb²⁺ sorption on the MWCNTs. Pb²⁺ could be electrostatically attracted into outer-sphere of the electric double layer of the HA-MWCNT complexes, a fraction of which would form coordination complexes with carboxyl groups in the inner- and/or outer-sphere.

To identify different NO₃ ⁻ sources in surface water and to estimate their proportional contribution to the nitrate mixture in surface water, a dual isotope and a Bayesian isotope mixing model have been applied for six different surface waters affected by agriculture, greenhouses in an agricultural area, and households. Annual mean δ¹⁵N–NO₃ ⁻ were between 8.0 and 19.4‰, while annual mean δ¹⁸O–NO₃ ⁻ were given by 4.5–30.7‰. SIAR was used to estimate the proportional contribution of five potential NO₃ ⁻ sources (NO₃ ⁻ in precipitation, NO₃ ⁻ fertilizer, NH₄ ⁺ in fertilizer and rain, soil N, and manure and sewage). SIAR showed that “manure and sewage” contributed highest, “soil N”, “NO₃ ⁻ fertilizer” and “NH₄ ⁺ in fertilizer and rain” contributed middle, and “NO₃ ⁻ in precipitation” contributed least. The SIAR output can be considered as a “fingerprint” for the NO₃ ⁻ source contributions. However, the wide range of isotope values observed in surface water and of the NO₃ ⁻ sources limit its applicability.

Ecological assessments over large spatial scales require that anthropogenic impacts be distinguishable above natural variation, and that monitoring tools are implemented to maximise impact detection and minimise cost. For three heavily modified and four relatively ‘pristine’ estuaries (disturbance category), chemical indicators (metals and PAHs) of anthropogenic stress were measured in benthic sediments, suspended sediments and deployed oysters, together with other environmental variables. These were compared with infaunal and hard-substrate invertebrate communities. Univariate analyses were useful for comparing contaminant loads between different monitoring tools and identified the strongest relationships between benthic and suspended sediments. However, multivariate analyses were necessary to distinguish ecological response to anthropogenic stressors from environmental “noise” over a large spatial scale and to identify sites that were being impacted by contaminants. These analyses provide evidence that suspended sediments are a useful alternative monitoring tool to detect potential anthropogenic impacts on benthic (infaunal and hard-substrate) communities.

The aquatic macrophyte, Potamogeton pusillus was evaluated for the removal of Cu²⁺ and Cr⁺⁶ from aqueous solutions during 15 days phytoextraction experiments. Results show that P. pusillus is capable of accumulating substantial amount of Cu and Cr from individual solutions (either Cu²⁺ or Cr⁺⁶). Significant correlations between metal removal and bioaccumulation were obtained. Roots and leaves accumulated the highest amount of Cu and Cr followed by stems. The bioaccumulation of Cr was significantly enhanced in the presence of Cu, showing a synergic effect on Cr⁺⁶ removal, presenting a good alternative for the removal of these metals from polluted aquifers. To the extent of our knowledge, this is the first report on both enhanced phytoextraction of Cr⁺⁶ in presence of Cu⁺² and bioaccumulation of these heavy metals by P. pusillus.

We examined Hg biogeochemistry in Baihua Reservoir, a system affected by industrial wastewater containing mercury (Hg). As expected, we found high levels of total Hg (THg, 664–7421 ng g⁻¹) and monomethylmercury (MMHg, 3–21 ng g⁻¹) in the surface sediments (0–10 cm). In the water column, both THg and MMHg showed strong vertical variations with higher concentrations in the anoxic layer (>4m) than in the oxic layer (0–4 m), which was most pronounced for the dissolved MMHg (p < 0.001). However, mercury levels in biota samples (mostly cyprinid fish) were one order of magnitude lower than common regulatory values (i.e. 0.3–0.5 mg kg⁻¹) for human consumption. We identified three main reasons to explain the low fish Hg bioaccumulation: disconnection of the aquatic food web from the high MMHg zone, simple food web structures, and biodilution effect at the base of the food chain in this eutrophic reservoir.

Thousands of hectares of wetlands are created annually because wetlands provide beneficial ecosystem services. Wetlands are also key sites for production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), but little is known about MeHg production in created systems. Here, we studied methylmercury in sediment, water, and invertebrates in created wetlands of various ages. Sediment MeHg reached 8 ng g⁻¹ in the newest wetland, which was significantly greater than in natural, control wetlands. This trend was mirrored in several invertebrate taxa, whose concentrations reached as high as 1.6 μg g⁻¹ in the newest wetland, above levels thought to affect reproduction in birds. The MeHg concentrations in created wetland invertebrate taxa generally decreased with increasing wetland age, possibly due to a combination of deeper anoxia and less organic matter accumulation in younger wetlands. A short-term management intervention and/or improved engineering design may be necessary to reduce the mercury-associated risk in newly created wetlands.

Currently HPLC/MS is the state of the art tool for environmental/drinking water perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) monitoring. PFOS can bind to peroxisomal proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα), which forms heterodimers with retinoid X receptors (RXRs) and binds to PPAR response elements. In this bioassay free PFOS in water samples competes with immobilized PFOS in ELISA plates for a given amount of PPARα–RXRα. It can be determined indirectly by immobilizing PPARα–RXRα–PFOS complex to another plate coated with PPARα antibody and subsequent measuring the level of PPARα–RXRα by using biotin-modified PPARα–RXRα probes–quantum dots–streptavidin detection system. The rapid and high-throughput bioassay demonstrated a detection limit of 2.5 ng L⁻¹ with linear range between 2.5 ng L⁻¹ and 75 ng L⁻¹. Detection results of environmental water samples were highly consistent between the bioassay and HPLC/MS.
