Energy resource scarcity and sediment pollution perniciousness have become enormous challenges, to which research has been focused on energy recovery and recycle technologies to solve both above problems. The organic matter stored in anoxic sediments of freshwater ecosystem represents a tremendous potential energy source. The system of aquatic plant coupled with sediment microbial fuel cell (AP-SMFC) has attracted much attention as a more feasible, economical and eco-friendly way to remediate sediment and surface water and generate electricity. However, the research on AP-SMFC has only been carried out in the last decade, and relevant studies have not been well summarized. In this review, the advances and prospects on AP-SMFC were systematically introduced. Firstly, the annual publication counts and keywords co-occurrence cluster of AP-SMFC were identified and visualized by resorting to the CiteSpace software, and the result showed that the research on AP-SMFC increased significantly in the last decade on the whole and will continue to increase. The bibliometric results provided valuable references and information on potential research directions for future studies. And then, the research progress and reaction mechanism of AP-SMFC were systematically described. Thirdly, the performance of AP-SMFC, including nutrients removal, organic contaminants removal, and electricity generation, was systematically summarized. AP-SMFC can enhance the removal of pollutants and electricity generation compared with SMFC without AP, and is considered to be an ideal technology for pollutants removal and resource recovery. Finally, the current challenges and future perspectives were summarized and prospected. Therefore, the review could serve as a guide for the new entrants to the field and further development of AP-SMFC application.

Identifying risks to ecosystems from contaminants needs a diversity of bioindicators, to understand the effects of these contaminants on a range of taxa. Molluscs are an ideal bioindicator because they are one of the largest phyla with extremely high ecological and economic importance. The aim of this study was to evaluate if laboratory bred Potamopyrgus antipodarum has the potential to show the impact of contaminants from various land use activities and degree of pollution on a freshwater ecosystem. We assessed the impact of contaminants arising from runoff and direct discharges in Merri Creek by measuring organism level responses (survival, growth, and reproduction), and sub-organism level responses (glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) activity and catalase (CAT) activity) in snails after 28-d of deployment at nine sites in Merri Creek and one site in Cardinia Creek. In Merri Creek, the top two sites were reference sites (with low impact from human activities), while the rest were impact sites (impacted by various anthropogenic land uses). Cardinia Creek (an additional reference site) had lower human activity. High concentrations of heavy metals, nutrients, and/or synthetic pyrethroids (bifenthrin) dominated these sites, which are likely to have contributed towards the negative responses observed in the snails. There was little influence from environmental conditions and site location on the endpoints because we found a similar response at an additional reference site compared to the reference sites in Merri Creek. At the organism level, reproduction increased and/or reduced, while CAT was affected at the sub-organism level. Potamopyrgus antipodarum has the potential to be a sensitive bioindicator for Australian conditions because the snails responded to varying concentrations of contaminants across different land use activities and showed similar sensitivity to P. antipodarum found in other regions of the globe and other bioindicators.

Degradation of freshwater ecosystems by uncontrolled human activities is a growing concern in the tropics. In this regard, we aimed at testing an integrative framework based on the IFEQ index to assess freshwater ecosystem health of river basins impacted by intense livestock and agricultural activities, using the Muchacho River Basin (MRB) as a case study. The IFEQ combine multiple lines of evidence such as riverine hydromorphological analysis (LOE 1), physicochemical characterization using ions and pesticides (LOE 2), aquatic macroinvertebrate monitoring (LOE 3), and phytotoxicological essays with L. sativa (LOE 4). Overall, results showed an important reduction in streamflow and an elevated increase in ion concentrations along the MRB caused by deforestation and erosion linked to agricultural and livestock activities. Impacts of the high ion concentrations were evidenced in macroinvertebrate communities as pollution-tolerant families, associated with high conductivity levels, represented 92 % of the total abundance. Pollution produced by organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) was critical in the whole MRB, showing levels that exceeded 270-fold maximum threshold for malathion and 30-fold for parathion, the latter banned in Ecuador. OPPs concentrations were related to low germination percentages of Lactuca sativa in sediment phytotoxicity tests. The IEFQ index ranged from 44.4 to 25.6, indicating that freshwater ecosystem conditions were “bad” at the headwaters of the MRB and “critical” along the lowest reaches. Our results show strong evidence that intense agricultural and livestock activities generated significant impacts on the aquatic ecosystem of the MRB. This integrative approach better explains the cumulative effects of human impacts, and should be replicated in other basins with similar conditions to help decision-makers and concerned inhabitants generate adequate policies and strategies to mitigate the degradation of freshwater ecosystems.

Our knowledge of the processes leading to the bioaccumulation of rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic biota is limited. As the contamination of freshwater ecosystems by anthropogenic REE have recently been reported, it becomes increasingly urgent to understand how these metals are transferred to freshwater organisms in order to develop appropriate guidelines. We exposed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to an REE, yttrium (Y), to either a range of Y-contaminated prey (Daphnia magna) or a range of Y-contaminated water. For the feeding experiment, the relationship between the Y assimilation by O. mykiss and the Y subcellular fractionation in D. magna was evaluated. Assimilation efficiency of Y by O. mykiss was low, ranging from 0.8 to 3%. These values were close to the proportion of Y accumulated in D. magna cytosol, 0.6–2%, a theoretical trophically available fraction. Moreover, under our laboratory conditions, water appeared as a poor source of Y transfer to O. mykiss. Regardless of the source of contamination, a similar pattern of Y bioaccumulation among O. mykiss tissues was revealed: muscles < liver < gills < intestine. We conclude that the trophic transfer potential of Y is low and the evaluation of Y burden in prey cytosol appears to be a relevant predictor of Y assimilation by their consumers.

This work aimed at predicting the toxic effects of phenolic compounds in Ba River on the health of female sharpbelly (Hemiculter lucidus) by the de novo transcriptomic analysis of the liver. Sharpbelly, a native fish living in freshwater ecosystem of East Asia, were sampled upstream, near, and downstream of a wastewater discharge to the Ba river. Based on the occurrence of bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), and 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) in the water and fish sampled from each site, up-, mid-, and down-stream were interpreted as control, high, and low treatment groups, respectively. In the mid-stream group the Fulton’s condition factor (CF) and body weight were remarkably increased by approximate 20%; the gonado-somatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) in mid-stream fish showed a similar increasing trend but lacking of statistical difference. Exposure to wastewater effluent caused 160 and 162 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in up-mid and down-mid stream groups, respectively. Two sets of DEGs were primarily enriched in the signaling pathways of drug metabolism, endocrine system, cellular process, and lipid metabolism in the mid-stream sharpbelly, which may alter the fish behavior, disrupt the reproductive function, and lead to hypothyroidism, hepatic steatosis, etc. Taken together, our results linked the disrupted signaling pathways with activities of phenolic compounds to predict the potential effects of wastewater effluent on the health of wild fish.

The quality of freshwater undoubtedly reflects the health of our surrounding environment, society, and economy, as these are supported by various freshwater ecosystems. Monitoring efforts have therefore been considered a vital means of ensuring the ecological health of freshwater environments. Nevertheless, most aquatic environmental monitoring strategies largely focus on bulk water sampling for analysis of physicochemical and key biological indicators, which for the most part do not consider pollution events that occur at any time between sampling events. Because benthic biofilms are ubiquitous in aquatic environments, pollution released during sporadic events may be absorbed by these biofilms, which can act as repositories of pollutants. The aim of this study was to assess whether benthic biofilm monitoring could provide an efficient way of properly characterizing the extent of pollution in aquatic environments. Here, bulk water and benthic biofilms were sampled from three Hong Kong streams having various pollution profiles, and subsequently compared via high-resolution microscopy, metagenomic analysis, and analytical chemistry. The results indicated that biofilms were, indeed, reservoirs of environmental pollutants, having different profiles compared with that of the corresponding bulk water samples. Moreover, the results also suggested that biofilms sampled in polluted areas were characterized by a higher species richness. While the analytical testing of benthic biofilms still needs further development, the integration of chemical-pollutant profiles and biofilm sequencing data in future studies may provide unique perspectives for understanding and identifying pollution-related biofilm biomarkers.

This study investigated bacterial diversities in surface water and sediment of the East Lake located in Wuhan, China. Bacterial community of lake water was mainly composed of Proteobacteria (31.1%), Actinobacteria (25.0%), Bacteroidetes (18.6%), Cyanobacteria (18.9%), Planctomycetes (2.4%) and Verrucomicrobia (1.4%), while more abundant and richer bacterial community was found in the sediments, e.g. 46.1% for Proteobacteria, 10.1% for Bacteroidetes, 8.7% for Chloroflexi, 8.4% for Acidobacteria, 5.0% for Cyanobacteria, 3.6% for Firmicutes, 3.1% for Planctomycetes, 2.8% for Actinobacteria and 2.3% for Nitrospirae. The decreased bacterial community richness and abundance was found in poor-quality water. Moreover, Bacterial Eutrophic Index (BEI) was firstly put forward to quantitatively describe the water quality of a freshwater ecosystem, which was defined as the ratio of abundance of Cyanobacteria and Actinobacteria in water. It was demonstrated BEI was well correlated to Carlson's Trophic State Index (TSI) (Spearman's ρ = 0.848, p < 0.01). The average TSI and BEI were determined to be 64 and 0.81, suggesting that East Lake could be classified as a medium eutrophic level.

To get an overview about distribution, levels and temporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and halogenated flame retardants (HFR) of emerging concern, different types of environmental samples archived in the German Environment Specimen Bank as well as fish filet samples from the Arctic (n = 13) and Antarctica (n = 5) were analysed for 43 substances (24 PBDE, 19 HFR) using a multi-column clean-up and GC-API-MS/MS or GC-MS. Sample types were herring gull egg (n = 3), blue mussel (n = 3) and eelpout filet (n = 3) from the German North- and Baltic Sea, bream filet (n = 7), zebra mussel (n = 6) and suspended particulate matter (SPM, n = 7) from German freshwater ecosystems as well as tree leaves (n = 9)/shoots (n = 10), soil (n = 4), earthworm (n = 4) and deer liver (n = 7) as representatives of German terrestrial ecosystems. PBDE and emerging HFR were present in each investigated matrices from Germany and Polar regions showing their widespread distribution. The presence in Arctic and Antarctic fish samples confirms their long-range transport potential. Average concentrations of total emerging HFR were highest in SPM (26 ng g⁻¹ dry weight (dw)), zebra mussel (10 ng g⁻¹ dw) and herring gull egg (2.6 ng g⁻¹ dw). Lowest levels were measured in fish filet samples from Antarctica (0.02 ng g⁻¹ dw). Average total PBDE concentrations were highest in bream filet (154 ng g⁻¹), herring gull egg (61 ng g⁻¹ dw), SPM (21 ng g⁻¹ dw), and zebra mussel 18 (ng g⁻¹) and lowest in deer liver (0.04 ng g⁻¹ dw). The patterns of non-fauna terrestrial samples (leaves, shoots, soil) as well as SPM were dominated by DBDPE and BDE209. Elevated proportions of DPTE and in most cases the absence of DBDPE characterized all fauna samples with the exception of Polar samples. Overall, emerging HFR appeared to be less bioaccumulative than PBDE. Temporal trends were generally decreasing with few exceptions such as DBDPE.

Nearshore environments are a critical transitional zone that connects the marine and terrestrial/freshwater ecosystems. The release of anthropogenic chemicals into nearshore ecosystems pose a human and environmental health risk. We investigated the microbial diversity, abundance and function in metal-contaminated sediments collected from the Rongjiang, Hanjiang and Lianjiang River estuaries and adjacent coastal areas using high throughput sequencing. The concentration of nutrients (NO3-N, NO2-N, NH4-N, PO4-P) and metal (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As, Hg) contaminants were higher at the mouth of the rivers compared to the coastal lines, and this was confirmed using cluster analysis. Estimates obtained using geoaccumulation index showed that about 38.9% of the sites were contaminated with Pb and the pollution load index showed that sediment from the mouth of Hanjiang River Estuary was moderately polluted with metals. In the nearshore sediment samples collected, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria were the dominant phylum with relative abundances of 46.6%, 8.05%, 6.47%, 5.26%, and 4.59%, respectively. There was no significant correlation between environmental variables and microbial abundance and diversity except for total organic carbon (TOC) (diversity; r = 0.569, p < 0.05) and Cr (diversity; r = 0.581, p < 0.05). At phyla level, Nitrospirae had a significant negative correlation with all metals except Cr, while OD1 had a significant positive correlation with all the metals. Overall, changes in nearshore sediment microbial communities by environmental factors were observed, and these may affect biogeochemical cycling.

Graphene oxide (GO) possesses versatile applicability and high hydrophilicity, thus may have frequent contact with aquatic organisms. However, the ecological risks of GO in aquatic ecosystems remain largely unexplored currently. This study evaluated the comprehensive toxicological effects of GO on Daphnia magna, a key species in fresh water ecosystem. The results revealed nonsevere acute toxicities, including immobility (72 h EC₅₀: 44.3 mg/L) and mortality (72 h LC₅₀: 45.4 mg/L), of GO on D. magna. To understand the underlying mechanism of GO exposure, changes in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) of D. magna exposed to GO were correlated, which revealed elevated GO-mediated oxidative stress and damages, especially in the long-time and high-dose exposure groups. The observations of in vivo fluorescence labeled with 2′, 7′-dichlorofluorescin further demonstrated that reactive oxygen species were concentrated in daphnia guts, which corresponded with the high bioaccumulation level (5 mg/L, 24 h body burden: 107.9 g/kg) of GO in daphnia guts. However, depuration of GO from daphnia was not difficult. Daphnia almost released all GO within 24 h after it was transferred to clean water. These results hence suggest that GO could accumulate and induce significant oxidative stress in the gut of D. magna, while D. daphnia can also relieve the acute toxicity by depurating GO.
