The preparation of bifunctional electrospun air filtration membranes by introducing attapulgite for the efficient capturing of ultrafine PMs and hazardous heavy metal ions

The comprehensive sources of particulate matter (PM) require air purification materials to possess both high filtration efficiencies and low air resistances in an effort to provide healthcare. However, the assembly of multiple-layered filters with different functions leads to high pressure drop and high operating cost. Therefore, a multifunctional air filter that can provide excellent air filtration capacity and healthcare is highly desired. Here, a novel bifunctional polyacrylonitrile/attapulgite hierarchical-structured filter with low air resistance and high adsorption capacity was designed and fabricated by embedding attapulgite nanorods during a facile electrospinning process. The hierarchical polyacrylonitrile/attapulgite membranes showed only a ∼64 Pa resistance for 0.1 μm PM. Another benefit of using the attapulgite nanorods is an adsorption effect for hazardous heavy metal ions that accompany airborne ultrafine PMs. Thereby this hierarchical membrane simultaneously exhibits an enhanced filtration performance and hazardous protection ability. Furthermore, due to the electret effect of the attapulgite nanorods, the surface potential of the membrane remains at above 2.2 kV after 600 min of continuous use, which could improve the air filtration efficiency and ensure the long-term service life of the filters. This work may provide a new approach for the design and development of multifunctional air filters for simultaneously capturing ultrafine PMs and any other accompanying hazardous chemicals.

This study focused on the presence of three biocidal products specific to healthcare facilities, i.e. chlorhexidine digluconate (CHD), bis(aminopropyl)laurylamine (BAPLA), and didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), in a hospital sewage system. Five sampling campaigns were conducted in 2016 and 2017 throughout the entire Poitiers University Hospital sewage system. DDAC concentrations ranging from 933 ± 119 to 3250 ± 482 μg/L were detected in 24-h composite samples, while lower concentrations (both within the same range) were detected for the two other compounds (i.e. 25 ± 5 to 97 ± 39 μg/L for CHD and 18 ± 3 to 142 ± 16 μg/L for BAPLA). Based on these findings, a mass balance was determined for these discharged compounds to compare the quantities detected in discharges to the amounts used for healthcare in the hospital. Hence, 60–90% of the quantities of DDAC used were found to be present at the hospital sewage outfall. Higher percentages of CHD (100–242%) were noted because of the high presumably quantities used for antiseptic applications, which were not considered in mass balance calculation. Finally, only 10–30% of BAPLA quantities used were detected at the site outfall. Analysis of the results for the different sampling points revealed the nature of the emission sources. For surface applications of DDAC and BAPLA, management of hospital linen is thus a major source of discharged biocidal products, probably following the washing of biocide-soaked textiles used for hospital facility maintenance. Moreover, discharge of biocidal products from a healthcare establishment depends especially on biocide handling practices in the emitting establishment. For BAPLA, compliance with hospital recommended dosages and practices whereby operators are required to prepare tailored quantities of detergents and disinfectants for each specific task could largely explain the limited release of this compound.

Together with the growing availability of data from electronic records from healthcare providers and healthcare systems, an assessment of associations between different environmental parameters (e.g., pollution levels and meteorological data) and hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality has become possible. This study aimed to assess the association of air pollution and hospitalizations using a large database comprising almost all hospitalizations in Poland. This time-series analysis has been conducted in five cities in Poland (Warsaw, Białystok, Bielsko-Biała, Kraków, Gdańsk) over a period of almost 4 years (2014–2017, 1255 days), covering more than 20 million of hospitalizations. The hospitalizations have been extracted from the National Health Fund registries as daily summaries. Correlation analysis and distributed lag nonlinear models have been used to investigate for statistically relevant associations of air pollutants on hospitalizations, trying by various methods to minimize potential bias from atmospheric parameters, days of the week, bank holidays, etc. A statistically significant increase of respiratory disease hospitalizations has been detected after peaks of particulate matter concentrations (particularly PM₂.₅, between 0.9 and 4.5% increase per 10 units of pollutant increase, and PM₁₀, between 0.9 and 3.5% per 10 units of pollutant increase), with a typical time lag between the pollutant peak and the event of 2 to 6 days. For other pollution parameters and other types of hospitalizations (e.g., cardiovascular events, eye and skin diseases, etc.), a weaker and ununiform correlations were recorded. Ambient air pollution exposure increases are associated with a short-term increase of hospitalizations due to respiratory tract diseases. The most prominent effect was recorded with the correlation of PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀. There is only weak evidence indicating that such short-term associations exist between peaks of air pollution concentrations and increased hospitalizations for other (e.g., cardiovascular) diseases. The obtained information could be used to better predict hospitalization patterns and costs for the healthcare system and perhaps trigger additional vigilance on particulate matter pollution in the cities.

Three-dimensional (3D) batch ECC of raw health care facility wastewater (HCFWW) was adopted using stainless steel (SS) and aluminum (Al) scrap metal particle electrodes. ECC treatment was focused on priority quality parameters viz., chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, and other important water quality parameters. Sludge settling and filterability for post-ECC slurry were investigated after ECC. COD removals of 87.56 and 87.2% were achieved for current densities (CD) 83.33 and 125 A/m² using SS-3D electrodes, and similarly, 86.99 and 86.23% COD removal for Al-3D electrodes. Simultaneously, color removals were 88.50 and 87.60% for CD 166.66 A/m² (4A) using SS and Al-3D electrodes. Water quality parameters viz., nitrate, phosphates, and sulfate were also removed by 93.18%, 96.83%, and 41.07% for SS-3D electrodes, while Al-3D electrodes showed 93.15%, 96.72%, and 25.94% removal. Post-ECC slurry settling was good for all the applied CD using SS-3D electrodes generating dense and sturdy flocs. Al-3D electrodes showed excellent floc settling properties. SS-3D electrode flocs displayed good filterability at 1A with α: 2.497 × 10¹¹ m kg⁻¹ and Rₘ 1.946 × 10¹⁰ m⁻¹. Post-ECC slurry using Al-3D electrodes were viscous causing delayed filterability giving α: 1.1760 × 10¹¹ m kg⁻¹ and Rₘ 1.504 × 10⁹ m⁻¹ for 3A. E. coli was destroyed by 97 and 98% for 2A and 3A respectively. Clear water reclamation of 85–90% and pollutants/contaminants removed within a short HRT of 75 min proved the effectiveness of adopting 3D-ECC for treating raw HCFWW.

The aim of this research is to design a multi-criteria model for environmental assessment of health care organizations. This is a model which guarantees the objectivity of the results obtained, is easy to apply, and incorporates a series of criteria, and their corresponding descriptors, relevant to the internal environmental auditing processes of the hospital. Furthermore, judgments were given by three experts from the areas of health, the environment, and multi-criteria decision techniques. From the values assigned, geometric means were calculated, giving weightings for the criteria of the model. This innovative model is intended for application within a continuous improvement process. A practical case from a Spanish hospital is included at the end. Information contained in the sustainability report provided the data needed to apply the model. The example contains all the criteria previously defined in the model. The results obtained show that the best-satisfied criteria are those related to energy consumption, generation of hazardous waste, legal matters, environmental sensitivity of staff, patients and others, and the environmental management of suppliers. On the other hand, those areas returning poor results are control of atmospheric emissions, increase in consumption of renewable energies, and the logistics of waste produced. It is recommended that steps be taken to correct these deficiencies, thus leading to an acceptable increase in the sustainability of the hospital.

Air pollutants and allergens are the main stimuli that have considerable effects on asthmatic patients’ health. Seamless monitoring of patients’ conditions and the surrounding environment, limiting their exposure to allergens and irritants, and reducing the exacerbation of symptoms can aid patients to deal with asthma better. In this context, ubiquitous healthcare monitoring systems can provide any service to any user everywhere and every time through any device and network. In this regard, this research established a GIS-based outdoor asthma monitoring framework in light of ubiquitous systems. The proposed multifaceted model was designed in three layers: (1) pre-processing, for cleaning and interpolating data, (2) reasoning, for deducing knowledge and extract contextual information from data, and (3) prediction, for estimating the asthmatic conditions of patients ubiquitously. The effectiveness of the proposed model is assessed by applying it on a real dataset that comprised of internal context information including patients’ personal information (age, gender, height, medical history), patients’ locations, and their peak expiratory flow (PEF) values, as well as external context information including air pollutant data (O₃, SO₂, NO₂, CO, PM₁₀), meteorological data (temperature, pressure, humidity), and geographic information related to the city of Tehran, Iran. With more than 92% and 93% accuracies in reasoning and estimation mechanism, respectively, the proposed method showed remarkably effective in asthma monitoring and management.

The aim of the literature review was to describe the environments where the presence of airborne Staphylococcus aureus was confirmed and to catalogue the most often used methods and conditions of bioaerosol sampling to identify the bacteria. The basis for searching of studies on S. aureus in the bioaerosol in different environments was PubMed database resources from the years 1990–2019 (May). The review included studies which were carried on in selected environments: hospitals and other health care facilities, large-scale animal breeding, wastewater treatment plants, residential areas, educational institutions, and other public places. The highest concentrations and genetic diversity of identified S. aureus strains, including MRSA (methicillin-resistant S. aureus), have been shown in large-scale animal breeding. The role of the airborne transmission in dissemination of infection caused by these pathogens is empirically confirmed in environmental studies. Commonly available, well-described, and relatively inexpensive methods of sampling, identification, and subtyping guarantee a high reliability of results and allow to obtain fast and verifiable outcomes in environmental studies on air transmission routes of S. aureus strains.

The economics of death and dying highlighted that environmental factors negatively influence healthcare sustainability. Therefore, this study conducted a system-based literature review to identify the negative externality of environmental damages on global healthcare reforms. Based on 42 peer-reviewed papers in the field of healthcare reforms and 12 papers in the field of environmental hazards, we identified 25 factors associated with death and dying and 15 factors associated with health-related damages across the world respectively. We noted that environmental factors are largely responsible to affect healthcare sustainability reforms by associating with the number of healthcare diseases pertaining to air pollutants. The study suggests healthcare practitioners and environmentalists to devise long-term sustainable healthcare policies by limiting highly toxic air pollutants through technology-embodied green healthcare infrastructure to attained efficient global healthcare recovery.

This paper offers a perspective for the link between air quality and stock returns in China through quantile Granger causality test. Compared to previous studies, the study makes the following innovations. Given the Chinese government plays an important role in economic development, its industrial policies are regarded as a new indispensable supplement of analysis framework apart from investor mood. Next, due to different reflections from cross-industries for different AQ levels, the industry heterogeneity is further considered. Also, nine industries are chosen as a sample, including environmental protection, wind power equipment, steel, photovoltaic equipment, thermal power, tourism, coal, medical service, and medical equipment. Besides, the quantile Granger causality test is robust to misspecification errors when detecting the potential dependence structure between the variables of air quality and stock returns. The empirical results show that the causal link exists in all industries, except medical service. Meanwhile, this impact presents asymmetrical features that when air quality is unhealthy, it has an influence on stock returns of the remaining eight industries. It can be explained by increasing cortisol level, more stringent environmental protection, and industrial policies. These conclusions have essential implications for market participants due to the fact that air quality generates various influences on the stock market. That is why a sustainable environmental design, strict regulatory framework, and special monitoring activities should be highly regarded in China.

Temperature is associated with mortality risk across cities. However, there is lack of study investigating the summer effect on mortality associated with mental/behavioral disorders, especially in cities with subtropical climate. In addition, summer mortality in subtropical cities is different from tropical cities, and previous studies have not investigated the urban environmental inequality on heat mortality associated with mental/behavioral disorders. A register-based study was developed to estimate the temperature effects on decedents on days with 50ᵗʰ percentile of average daily temperature between 2007 and 2014 in Hong Kong (n = 133,359). Poisson regression was firstly applied to estimate the incidence rate ratio (IRR) from the summer temperature effects on all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and mortality associated with mental/behavioral disorders. For a 1 °C increase in average temperature on days with temperature ≥ 24.51 °C, IRRs of mortality associated with mental and behavioral disorders on lag 0 and lag 1 days were 1.033 [1.004, 1.062] and 1.030 [1.002, 1.060], while temperature effects on cardiovascular mortality and respiratory mortality during normal summer days (not extreme heat events) were not significant. A further investigation with linear regression has shown that decedents with mental/behavioral disorders on higher temperature days resided in areas with lower percentage of sky view, lower percentage of vegetation cover, higher level of neighborhood-level PM₂.₅, higher level of neighborhood-level NO, and higher level of neighborhood-level black carbon (BC). In order to develop protocols for community healthcare based on the “Leaving no one behind” scheme documented in the 2016 Sustainable Development Goals report of the United Nations, it is necessary to include heat effects on mental/behavioral disorders, especially people with dementia, for community planning and healthcare development.
