Biochar has a wide range of feedstocks, and different feedstocks often resulted in different properties, such as element distribution and heavy metal immobilization performance. In this work, batch experiments were conducted to assess the effectiveness of biochar pyrolyzed from kitchen waste (KWB), corn straw (CSB), and peanut hulls (PHB) on immobilization of Cd and Pb in contaminated soil by planting swamp cabbage (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk.) with a combination of toxicological and physiological tests. The results showed that biochar could all enhance the soil pH, and reduce extractable Pb and Cd in soil by 22.61%–71.01% (KWB), 18.54%–64.35% (CSB), and 3.28%–60.25% (PHB), respectively. The biochar led to a drop in Cd and Pb accumulation in roots, stems, and leaves by 45.43%–97.68%, 59.13%–96.64%, and 63.90%–99.28% at the dosage of 60.00 mg/kg, respectively. The root length and fresh weight of swamp cabbage were promoted, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) decreased after biochar treatment. The distribution of heavy metal fractions before and after biochar treatment indicated that biochar could transform Cd and Pb into a state of lower bioavailability, thus inhibiting Cd and Pb uptake by swamp cabbage. Biochar with different feedstocks could be ranked by the following order according to immobilization performance: KWB > CSB > PHB.

Bioaccumulation and toxicity of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances and metal in plants have been confirmed, however their contamination in soil and plants still requires extensive investigation. In this study the combined effects of chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether potassium sulfonate (F53B) and chromium (Cr) on water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk) were investigated. Compared with each single stress, the combination of F53B and Cr (VI) reduced the biomass and height and increasingly accumulated in the roots and destroyed the cell structure. Besides, the co-contamination led to the immobilization of F53B and Cr (VI) in soil, which affected their migration in soil and transfer to plants. The antioxidant response and photosynthesis of the plant weakened under the single Cr (VI) and enhanced under the single F53B treatment; however the contamination of F53B and Cr (VI) could also reduce this effect, as confirmed by the gene expression of MTa, psbA and psbcL genes. This study provides an evidence of the environmental risks resulting from the coexistence of F53B and Cr (VI).

Predicting the translocation of organic contaminants to plants is crucial to ensure the quality of agricultural goods and assess the risk of human exposure through the food web. In this study, the performance of a modified plant uptake model was evaluated considering a number of chemicals, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), with a range of physicochemical properties; different plant species (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk (swamp morning glory), Chrysanthemum coronarium L. (crown daisy), Zea mays L. (corn), Brassica rapa pekinensis (Chinese cabbage), Cucurbita moschata (pumpkin), Raphanus sativus L. (radish), Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) and Capsicum annuum L. (pepper)); and different types of soil (paddy soil, laterite soil and black soil). The biases of predictions from a previously used partition-limited model were −76.4% to −99.9% relative to the measured concentrations. An overall transmission factor (αtf=0.39), calculated from a linear regression of the measured bioavailable fraction (Cbᵢₒ) and the total concentration in plants, was considered a crucial modification and was included in the modified model. Cbᵢₒ was found to better represent the chemical content available in soil for root uptake. The results from this study improve the accuracy of predictions for vegetation-uptake assessments by modifying the partition-limited model and then validating the modified model using comparisons between predicted data and measured values. The accuracy of the concentrations of organic contaminants in plants improved: when using the modified model, 89.5% of the predictions were within 40% of the actual value. The average bias was limited to 1.5%–30.5%. The model showed great potential to predict plant uptake using the bioavailable fraction concentration in soil.

The increasing discharge of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) into the environment has generated serious public concern. The recent awareness of the environmental impact of this emerging class of pollutants and their potential adverse effects on human health have been documented in many reports. However, information regarding uptake and intracellular distribution of PPCPs in hydrophytes under hydroponic conditions, and potential human exposure is very limited. A laboratory experiment was conducted using ¹⁴C-labeled triclosan (TCS) to investigate uptake and distribution of TCS in six aquatic plants (water spinach, purple perilla, cress, penny grass, cane shoot, and rice), and the subcellular distribution of ¹⁴C-TCS was determined in these plants. The results showed that the uptake and removal rate of TCS from nutrient solution by hydrophytes followed the order of cress (96%) > water spinach (94%) > penny grass (87%) > cane shoot (84%) > purple perilla (78%) > rice (63%) at the end of incubation period (192 h). The range of ¹⁴C-TCS content in the roots was 94.3%–99.0% of the added ¹⁴C-TCS, and the concentrations in roots were 2–3 orders of magnitude greater than those in shoots. Furthermore, the subcellular fraction-concentration factor (3.6 × 10²–2.6 × 10³ mL g⁻¹), concentration (0.58–4.47 μg g⁻¹), and percentage (30%–61%) of ¹⁴C-TCS in organelles were found predominantly greater than those in cell walls and/or cytoplasm. These results indicate that for these plants, the roots are the primary storage for TCS, and within plant cells organelles are the major domains for TCS accumulation. These findings provide a better understanding of translocation and accumulation of TCS in aquatic plants at the cellular level, which is valuable for environmental and human health assessments of TCS.

To evaluate the influence of surface coatings on nano-fertilizers uptake and their phytotoxicity to crops and its health risk to Chinese adults, trisodium citrate (TC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) coatings were prepared on the surface of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), respectively, with 100 and 500 mg/L of bare CuO NPs, TC-CuO NPs, and PEG-CuO NPs were exposed to soil-grown Ipomoea aquatica Forssk. Combined bio-transmission electron microscopy and micro-CT observed cellular migration of coated CuO NPs in symplastic and apoplastic pathways, as well as nanoparticles transported through vascular tissues to the above-ground parts. Since TC-CuO NPs had less inhibition on vascular phylogeny of I. aquatica roots which was determined by RT-qPCR, their migration in plants was more efficient, thus exhibiting greater phytotoxicity to shoots. Meanwhile, coatings significantly reduced the phytotoxicity of CuO NPs by stimulating plant antioxidant defense. The risk of CuO nano-fertilizers on human dietary safety was evaluated, the HQ > 1 in the 500 mg/L CuO NPs treatment indicated a potential health risk to Chinese adults, which was reduced by the coatings. This work explored for the first time the mechanism of coating effects on nanoparticles migration efficiency and phytotoxicity at the molecular level and demonstrated that the migration of nanoparticles between tissues could have an impact on phytotoxicity. It implied that coating can be tailored to target nanoparticles to specific regions of the plant. In addition, this study highlights the potential health risks associated with the consumption of I. aquatica fertilized with CuO NPs and provides valuable insights into the environmental applications of nano-fertilizers.

Benzene kresoxim-methyl (BKM) is an important methoxyacrylate-based strobilurin fungicide widely used against various phytopathogenic fungi in crops. Uptake, translocation and accumulation of BKM in vegetables remain unknown. This study was designed to investigate uptake, translocation, and accumulation of ¹⁴C-BKM and/or its potential metabolites in Chinese flowering cabbage and water spinach. ¹⁴C-BKM can be gradually taken up to reach a maximum of 44.4% of the applied amount by Chinese flowering cabbage and 34.6% by water spinach at 32 d after application. The ¹⁴CO₂ fractions released from the hydroponic plant system reached 37.8% for cabbage and 45.8% for water spinach, respectively. Concentrations of ¹⁴C in leaves, stems and roots all gradually increased as vegetables growing, with relative 44.9% (cabbage) and 26.8% (water spinach) of translocated from roots to edible leaves. In addition, ¹⁴C in leaves was mainly accumulated in the bottom leaves, which was visualized by quantitative radioautographic imaging. The bioconcentration factor of ¹⁴C ranged from 7.1 to 38.2 mL g⁻¹ for the cabbage and from 8.6 to 24.6 mL g⁻¹ for the water spinach. The translocation factor of BKM ranged from 0.10 to 2.04 for the cabbage and 0.10–0.46 for the water spinach throughout the whole cultivation period, indicating that the cabbage is easier to translocate BKM from roots to leaves and stems than water spinach. In addition, the daily human exposure values of BKM in both vegetables were much lower than the limited dose of 0.15 mg day⁻¹. The results help assess potential accumulation of BMK in vegetables and potential risk.

The mechanism of enhanced accumulation of organic contaminants in crops with engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) were investigated by co-exposure of crops (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk (Swamp morning-glory), Cucumis sativus L. (cucumber), Zea mays L. (corn), Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) and Cucurbita moschata (pumpkin))to a range of chemicals (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)) and ENMs (TiO2, Ag, Al2O3, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) in soil. Induced by 50 mg kg−1 graphene co-exposure, the increase range of BDE-209, BaP, p,p′-DDE, HCB, PYR, FLU, ANT, and PHEN in the plants were increased in the range of 7.51–36.42, 5.69–32.77, 7.09–59.43, 11.61–66.73, 4.58–57.71, 5.79–109.07, 12.85–109.76, and15.57–127.75 ng g−1, respectively. The contaminants in ENMs-spiked and control soils were separated into bioavailable, bound and residual fractions using a sequential ultrasonic extraction procedure (SUEP) to investigate the mechanism of the enhanced accumulation. The bioavailable fraction in spiked soils showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) from that in the control, while the bound fraction increased in equal proportion (p > 0.05) to the reduction in the residual fraction. These results implied that ENMs can competitively adsorbed the bound of organic contaminants from soil and co-transferred into crops, followed by a portion of the residual fraction transferred to the bound fraction to maintain the balance of different fractions in soils. The mass balance was all higher than 98.5%, indicating the portion of degraded contaminants was less than 1.5%. These findings could expand our knowledge about the organic contaminants accumulation enhancement in crops with ENMs.

The Niger Delta (Nigeria) is an exemplar of a legacy of environmental pollution. Limited knowledge on spatial and temporal pollutant distributions in the region highlights the need for biomonitoring approaches to study impacts on sentinel organisms. This study evaluated whether infrared (IR) spectroscopy and multivariate analysis could detect alterations in biomolecules in samples in differing exposure scenarios, i.e., spatial and temporal using African catfish (Heterobranchus bidorsalis) or water spinach (Ipomea aquatica). Significant spectral differences between tissues isolated from African catfish based on site or season were observed; in a region where fish appeared not to be present, water spinach was used as a surrogate sentinel organism. Using one-way ANOVA, the spectral categories were significant (P < 0.0001). The applicability of IR spectroscopy to detect subtle changes in target biological molecules within sentinel organisms along with its low-cost yet high-throughput potential suggests that biospectroscopy permits real-time evaluation of environmental exposure effects.

Antimony (Sb) is an emerging contaminant and until recently it was assumed to behave in a similar way to arsenic (As). Arsenic and Sb often co-occur in contaminated sites, yet most investigations consider their toxicity to plants singly. More research is needed to understand the interactions between As and Sb in soils and plants. This study investigated the interactive effect of As and Sb in terms of soil bioavailability, plant toxicity and bioaccumulation on the commercially important agricultural plant, water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) using a pot experiment. Plants were exposed to As and Sb individually (As ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎, Sb ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎) and as a mixture (As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎) at different concentrations. Plant growth was measured using shoot and root dry mass, length and chlorophyll a content of leaves. At the end of the bioassay, bioavailable metalloids were extracted from the soil as per a sequential extraction procedure (SEP) and plant tissue was analysed for metalloid content. For As, there were no differences observed between the bioavailability of As in the As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎ and As ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎ treatments. For Sb, no increase in bioavailability was observed with co-contamination compared to single-Sb exposures for most concentrations except at 1250 mg/kg. Single-Sb was not toxic to I. aquatica shoot dry mass and length, but there was greater shoot Sb accumulation in the As + Sb ₍cₒₘbᵢₙₑd₎ than the Sb ₍ᵢₙdᵢᵥᵢdᵤₐₗ₎ treatment. In contrast, single-As was toxic to I. aquatica growth. When As and Sb were present together in the soil, there was a synergistic toxicity to shoot dry mass (EC₅₀ Toxic Unit (TU) was less than 1) and additive toxicity (EC₅₀ equal to 1 TU) to shoot length. This work shows that the co-occurrence of As and Sb in soil increases Sb bioavailability and can cause synergistic toxicity to an important agricultural crop.

Compound-Specific Isotope Analysis (CSIA) is employed to investigate the biodegradation of metalaxyl in soil and plant. By studying the degradation of metalaxyl in unsterilized and sterilized soil with two initial concentrations of metalaxyl, microbial degradation has the most significant effect on the degradation of metalaxyl in soil. In addition, biodegradation and isotope fractionation of metalaxyl in water spinach with root application and leaf application are investigation by CSIA. It is shown that both absorption and degradation of metalaxyl in the roots and leaves of water spinach can cause the shift of δ¹³C values. Specifically, the δ¹³C values decreased during absorption while increased in degradation of metalaxyl in the roots and leaves of water spinach, indicating that the lighter isotope is absorbed in the absorption process at first and then degraded. Furthermore, the relationship between carbon isotope ratios and residual concentration of metalaxyl can be described by the Rayleigh equation, and the biodegradation rate of metalaxyl could be calculated by using CSIA without measuring the concentration of metalaxyl both in soil and plant. Therefore, the use of CSIA can quantitatively assess the degradation behavior of pesticide pollution in the environment and provide a certain scientific evidence and technical support in the process of environmental remediation.
