Performance of some biotic indices in the real variable world: A case study at different spatial scales in North-Western Mediterranean Sea

The aim of this study was to analyse the variability of four different benthic biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX, H′, M-AMBI) in two marine coastal areas of the North-Western Mediterranean Sea. In each coastal area, 36 replicates were randomly selected according to a hierarchical sampling design, which allowed estimating the variance components of the indices associated with four different spatial scales (ranging from metres to kilometres). All the analyses were performed at two different sampling periods in order to evaluate if the observed trends were consistent over the time. The variance components of the four indices revealed complex trends and different patterns in the two sampling periods. These results highlighted that independently from the employed index, a rigorous and appropriate sampling design taking into account different scales should always be used in order to avoid erroneous classifications and to develop effective monitoring programs. How heterogeneous distribution of macrobenthos can affect the performance of some biotic indices.

The fractionation and speciation of As in a contaminated soil were investigated, and a remediation strategy was tested. Regarding speciation, we found that As(V) prevails over As(III) whereas more than 40% of total arsenic is in organic form. The fractionation of As was investigated with two sequential extraction methods: a low mobility was found. Then we tested the possibility of using phosphoric acid to extract As from the soil and cleaning the washing effluents by sorption onto montmorillonite. The efficiency of the extraction and of the adsorption onto the clay were also investigated for Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, whose total concentrations and fractionation in the soil are reported here. The extraction percentages for As and metals ranged from 30 to 65%; the residual proportions in the soil are presumably in very unreactive forms. Montmorillonite showed a good uptake capacity towards the investigated pollutants. Arsenic in a contaminated soil was present in different forms and it was extracted by soil washing followed by effluent treatment by sorption onto a natural clay.
Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]Implementing an Operational Ozone Forecasting System Based on WRF/CALMET/CALGRID Models: a 5-Month Case Study over Tuscany, Italy

An ozone forecasting system has been developed based on the CALGRID photochemical dispersion model. The system is implemented as an experimental operational web service at the LaMMA Consortium to forecast ozone pollution over Tuscany region, Italy. It takes advantage of two daily forecasts, one reproducing the meteorology over Tuscany and the other providing chemical boundary conditions. Meteorological forecasts are performed by the Weather Research and Forecasting Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model (WRF-NMM) mesoscale model, which is operative at LaMMA for the daily forecasting service. Calculated at a 10-km resolution, WRF-NMM outputs are downscaled to the 4-km system's final resolution through the CALMET diagnostic model. Daily boundary conditions are forecast by the CHIMERE dispersion model of the PREV'AIR European air quality forecasting system. Since CHIMERE uses the MELCHIOR chemical mechanism, a suitable species conversion was required to the SAPRC-90 mechanism implemented in CALGRID. Emission data are provided by the Regional Inventory of the Sources of Emissions of the Tuscan Regional Authority. Each day, a 96-h simulation is run starting from 00 UTC of the preceding day, used to merely initialize the system, resulting in a 3-day forecast of ozone from today issued to the web in terms of ozone daily mean and maximum concentrations over Tuscany. The system was experimentally run over May to September 2007, resulting in a good accuracy compared to station observations.

A meso-scale pilot plant was set up to test the efficiency of a phytoremediation technique applied to slightly contaminated marine sediments dredged from the port of Livorno (central Italy). The technique applied involved the use of plants (a grass species, Paspalum vaginatum and a shrub species, Tamarix gallica) and earthworms (Eisenia foetida sp.) in order to recreate an active ecosystem in which plants, micro- and macroorganisms could interact with each other through the rhizosphere, for the adsorption, extraction and/or degradation of pollutants. This system enables plants to grow in a fine textured and salt medium highly unsuitable for plant species, and a physical, chemical and biological amelioration of the matrix was observed at the end of the experimentation (after 9 months). The sediment was bio-physically pre-conditioned by mixing it with calcareous material from excavating activities (5:1 v/v) and applying green compost. The presence of microorganisms in the rhizosphere and the earthworms produced a reduction by about 50% of the initial total petroleum hydrocarbon content. The use of a natural chelator with phyto-hormonal properties (humic substances) showed their capability of forming stable complexes, especially with Pb, and their contribution as an agronomic fertiliser. The combined effect of the P. vaginatum and T. gallica in the extraction of heavy metals from the sediment showed promisingly high percentages of metal effectively extracted in comparison with its available fraction (e.g. available Ni = 6.2%; Ni extracted = 15.7%). The technique proposed could be promising for an operational re-use of dredged marine sediments for agricultural purposes, a suitable final destination for the great majority of these contaminated materials from rivers and harbour docks.

In order to find out a new effective accumulator of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) useful for monitoring studies on a large scale and low costs, the accumulation capacity of both biological and artificial matrixes (mosses and polyester fibers, respectively) has been tested. For this purposes, Hypnum cupressiforme and dacron® were exposed to pollution airborne in two sites located nearby an active iron industry and in center of the town of Trieste, where high PAH pollution spots, due to vehicular traffic, are usually detected. The samplers were exposed in six sampling sessions for 21 days. The results obtained were compared with data collected by active PAH samplers, usually employed for official widespread monitoring. The level of correlation between the data sets was calculated. Furthermore, a repeatability study of data was performed. According to the results, both matrixes are good PAH accumulators, though they show different skills.

A set of ten heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) was investigated in surface sediments (0-5 cm) collected in 21 sites of the Gulf of Trieste, Northern Adriatic Sea (Italy). The aim of this work was to obtain a preliminary assessment about the levels and spatial distribution of these selected elements. Ancillary parameters such as grain size, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were also determined. The enrichment factor was calculated to discriminate if a natural condition or a status of anthropogenic contamination occurs. In addition, a set of sediment quality guidelines, mean effect low range and effect medium range quotients, was also applied in order to predict the probability of adverse biological effects on the benthic community.

The concentration of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V and Zn was measured in the aquatic bryophyte Rhynchostegium riparioides after a 4-week transplantation at 83 stations in seven main watercourses and three smaller tributaries of the basin of the River Bacchiglione (NE Italy). The study, carried out in 9 months, aimed at establishing a database for statistical analyses to define a novel index of water quality, specifically calibrated for moss bags, and suitable for bio-monitoring purposes where autochthonous bryophytes are not available. The background level was estimated for each element, the ratio between sample and background concentration was adopted as measure of environmental alteration and a five-class interpretation scale was defined. The 73.8% of measured concentrations reflected a condition of naturality, 16.6% suspect of alteration, 7.6% sure alteration, 1.6% severe alteration and <0.5% extreme alteration. The condition of global environmental alteration (all contaminants) at each station was also defined. Forty-four stations presented absence or suspect of alteration, 39 sure alteration for one or more elements. Bivariate and multivariate analyses revealed (1) highly significant correlations (p < 0.001) between the concentrations of Co-Mn, Sb-Zn, and Fe-V, depending on both natural and human factors, (2) chemical patterns leading to galvanic industries, metallurgy or urban sewages, in some case with a geographical distribution and (3) a gradient of environmental alteration from the Pre-Alps to the lowland. Coloured maps indicate both point sources and widespread environmental alteration, highlighting not only industrial-urban areas but also some apparently undisturbed sites.

Assessing air quality in street canyons is a crucial concern, as the highest pollution levels and threshold exceedances are usually experienced within this kind of urban streets. A brief overview based on experimental studies and modelling techniques undertaken in literature is presented, including characteristic features affecting wind flow and pollutant dispersion within street canyons. In this work, a numerical street canyon model intercomparison has been performed in a typical urban canyon in Florence, Italy. In particular, STREET, Canyon Plume Box Model (CPBM) and Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM) have been applied to compute the street-level 1-h carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations. In addition, the CALINE4 model has been applied to test the site morphology. Input data cover a 1-year time period and include meteorological observations as well as measured traffic volumes and driving speeds. Hourly road emissions have been calculated using the COPERT methodology taking into account vehicle fleet, traffic flows and driving speed, as well as ambient temperature to account for cold overemissions. A preliminary experimental data analysis has been carried out in order to investigate the dependence of observed CO concentrations on meteorological and traffic parameters. Hourly CO concentrations observed over the full year have been used to compare the STREET, CPB and OSP models, resulting in a detailed statistical analysis carried out by wind sector as well as on a seasonal basis.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); their derivatives nitro, and methyl-PAHs; n-alkanes; and organic acids were investigated in the aerosol samples collected during two field campaigns conducted at three sampling stations in an industrialized city in southern Italy. The main sources affecting the atmosphere and its toxicity were investigated by means of the diagnostic ratios of: specific particulate-phase PAHs, marker compounds among nitro-PAHs, alkanes, and acids, the dominant wind direction, daily and seasonal abundance of carcinogenic organic substances. The potential importance of the non-regulated pollutants to assess the air quality was confirmed; in fact the carcinogenic organic compounds showed to have scarce correlation with particulate matter (PM) concentration. An exceptionally high variability of toxic compounds at a daily scale was due to meteorological condition causing periods of extremely high pollution levels.

A study on pH and chemical composition of precipitation was carried out in two Italian sites, one urban (site 1) and one rural (site 2), located approximately 30 km far from Bologna, during a 3-year period. No significative site variation was found. In both locations, bulk deposition pH ranged from slightly acid to slightly alkaline, despite the volume weighted mean concentration of acidic species, NO ₃ ⁻ and SO ₄ ²⁻ (67.4 and 118.4 μeq l⁻¹ in site 1 and 88.7 and 103.8 μeq l⁻¹ in site 2), that were similar to those of typical acidic rainfall region. This might be ascribed to the neutralization reaction of the Ca²⁺, attributed to the calcareous soil and the frequent dusty air mass intrusion from the Sahara. The pair correlation matrix and the analysis of the main components suggested also ammonium and other crustal elements as neutralization agents. The depositional rate of SO ₄ ²⁻ and NO ₃ ⁻ , chemical elements of agricultural interest, amounted to 38 and 28 and 32 and 35 kg ha⁻¹ for site 1 and site 2, respectively. These supplies of nutrient were not negligible and had to be considered on cultivated lands. NH ₄ ⁺ deposition rate on site 2 was 7 kg ha⁻¹, 23% over site 1, probably due to nitrogen fertilization in the fields around the monitoring station. In site 1, SO ₄ ²⁻ presented a seasonal trend, indicating that its principal source was the residential heating. Results emphasized that the entity of the bulk deposition acidification is linked not only to the ions local emission sources (fossil fuel combustions, heating, and fertilizers) but also to the surrounding territory and the prevalent wind that transports through kilometers air masses which may contain acidic and alkaline species.
