2021
Sun, Tao | Xu, Yingming | Sun, Yuebing | Wang, Lin | Liang, Xuefeng | Jia, Hongtao
Biochar has been widely used in the mitigation of soil potentially toxic metals due to its high efficiency and low cost. Crayfish shell biochar (CSBC) was prepared at 300, 500, and 700 °C (referred to as CS300, CS500, and CS700, respectively) and the performance and mechanism of CSBC for mitigating Pb polluted water and soil was investigated. The results indicated that CSBC prepared at higher temperatures possessed higher pH value and ash content, more abundant pore structure, and higher stability. Pb²⁺ adsorption onto CSBC fitted well with the pseudo second order and intraparticle diffusion models. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb²⁺ increased with the pyrolysis temperature, being 599.70, 1114.53, and 1166.44 mg·g⁻¹ for CS300, CS500 and CS700, respectively. Compared with the control soil samples, the content of available Pb after applying 0.05%–5% CSBC was reduced by 1.87%–16.48% in acidic soils and 1.00%–11.09% in alkaline soils. Moreover, the fractionation of exchangeable Pb was converted to stable organic matter bound, Fe-Mn oxide bound, and residue fractions. XRD, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis showed that ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, and C−π interaction are the dominant interaction mechanisms. Therefore, CSBC can employ as an effective immobilizing agent for the mitigation of Pb contaminated water and soil.

The negative impact of antibiotic pollution on the agricultural system and human health is a hot issue in the world. However, little information is available on the antibiotics toxicity mechanism and the role of silicon (Si) to alleviate the antibiotics toxicity. In this study, strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) showed excitatory response to low-dose SMZ (1 mg L⁻¹), but strawberry root and photosynthetic efficiency were damaged under high level. When SMZ level exceeded 10 mg L⁻¹, H₂0₂, O₂⁻, MDA and relative conductivity increased, while SOD and CAT activities first increased and then decreased. SMZ accumulated more in roots and fruits, but less in stems, and the accumulation increased with the increase of SMZ-dose. Under 1 mg L⁻¹ SMZ, the SMZ accumulation in fruits was 110.54 μg kg⁻¹, which exceeded the maximum residue limit. SMZ can induce the expression of sul1, sul2 and intI1, and intI1 had the highest abundance. Exogenous application of Si alleviated the toxicity of SMZ, which is mainly related to the degradation of SMZ in soil and the reduction of SMZ absorption by strawberry. In addition, Si relieved root damage, promoted the increase of photosynthetic efficiency, and improved the antioxidant system to resist SMZ toxicity.

Rapid urbanization, which is closely related to economic growth, human health, and micro-climate, has resulted in a considerable amount of anthropogenic heat emissions. The lack of estimation data on long-term anthropogenic heat emissions is a great concern in climate and urban flux research. This study estimated the annual average anthropogenic heat fluxes (AHFs) in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in China between 1995 and 2015 on the basis of multisource remote sensing images and ancillary data. Anthropogenic heat emissions from different sources (e.g., industries, buildings, transportation, and human metabolism) were also estimated to analyze the composition of AHFs. The spatiotemporal dynamics of long-term AHFs with high spatial resolution (500 m) were estimated by using a refined AHF model and then analyzed using trend and standard deviation ellipse analyses. Results showed that values in the region increased significantly from 0.15 W· m−2 in 1995 to 1.46 W· m−2 in 2015. Heat emissions from industries, transportation, buildings, and human metabolism accounted for 64.1%, 17.0%, 15.5%, and 3.4% of the total anthropogenic heat emissions, respectively. Industrial energy consumption was the dominant contributor to the anthropogenic heat emissions in the region. During this period, industrial heat emissions presented an unstable variation but showed a growing trend overall. Heat emissions from buildings increased steadily. Spatial distribution was extended with an increasing tendency of the difference between the maximum and the minimum and was generally dominated by the northeast–southwest directional pattern. The spatiotemporal distribution patterns and trends of AHFs could provide vital support on management decision in city planning and environmental monitoring.

Exposure experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the toxicity of ZnO-NPs (10–30 nm) and dissolved Zn at sub-lethal doses (50 and 5 ppm, respectively) to zebrafish (Danio rerio). Humic acid, alginic acid, bovine serum albumin and various natural DOM isolated from rivers as the Milwaukee River-WI (NOMW), Yukon River-AK (NOMA) and Suwannee River-GA DOM (NOMS) were used to represent humic substances (HA), carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (PTN), and natural organic matter (NOM), respectively. Initial experiments were carried out to confirm the toxic effect of ZnO-NPs at 50 ppm, followed by mitigation experiments with different types and concentrations of DOM (0.4–40 mg-C/L). Compared to 0% hatch of 50 ppm ZnO-NPs exposed embryos at 72 h post fertilization (hpf), NOMS, NOMW and HA had the best mitigative effects on hatching (53–65%), followed by NOMA, CHO and PTN (19–35%); demonstrating that the mitigation effects on ZnO-NPs toxicity were related to DOM's quantity and composition. At 96 hpf, 20% of embryos exposed to 50 ppm ZnO-NPs hatched, 100% of embryos reared in embryo medium hatched, and close to 100% of the embryos hatched upon mitigation, except for those mitigated with PTN which had less effect. Dissolved Zn (5 ppm) also exhibited the same toxicity on embryos as ZnO-NPs (50 ppm). However, in the presence of HA, NOM and CHO, the hatching rates at 72 and 96 hpf increased significantly compared to 5% hatch without DOM. The overall mitigation effects produced by DOM followed the order of HA ≥ NOMS > NOM (A&W) > CHO >> PTN, although specific mitigation effects varied with DOM concentration and functionalities. Our results also indicate that the toxicity of ZnO-NPs to embryos was mostly derived from NPs although dissolved Zn released from ZnO-NPs also interacted with embryos, affecting hatching, but to a less extent.

The excessive proliferation of Microcystis aeruginosa can lead to ecological damage, economic losses, and threaten animal and human health. For controlling Microcystis blooms, microorganism-based methods have attracted much attention from researchers because of their eco-friendliness and species-specificity. Herein, we first found that a Paucibacter strain exhibits algicidal activity against M. aeruginosa and microcystin degradation capability. The algicidal activity of DH15 (2.1 × 10⁴ CFU/ml) against M. aeruginosa (2 × 10⁶ cells/ml) was 94.9% within 36 h of exposure. DH15 also degraded microcystin (1.6 mg/L) up to 62.5% after 72 h. We demonstrated that the algicidal activity of DH15 against M. aeruginosa can be mediated by physical attachment and indirect attack: (1) Both washed cells and cell-free supernatant could kill M. aeruginosa efficiently; (2) Treatment with DH15 cell-free supernatants caused oxidative stress, altered the fatty acid profile, and damaged photosynthetic system, carbohydrate, and protein metabolism in M. aeruginosa. The combination of direct and indirect attacks supported that strain DH15 exerts high algicidal activity against M. aeruginosa. The expression of most key genes responsible for photosynthesis, antioxidant activity, microcystin synthesis, and other metabolic pathways in M. aeruginosa was downregulated. Strain DH15, with its microcystin degradation capacity, can overcome the trade-off between controlling Microcystis blooms and increasing microcystin concentration. Our findings suggest that strain DH15 possesses great potential to control outbreaks of Microcystis blooms.

Outdoor air pollution is considered as the most serious environmental problem for human health, associated with some million deaths worldwide per year. Cities have to cope with the challenges due to poor air quality impacting human health and citizen well-being. According to an analysis in the framework of this study, the annual mean concentrations of tropospheric ozone (O₃) have been increasing by on average 0.16 ppb year⁻¹ in cities across the globe over the time period 1995–2014. Green urban infrastructure can improve air quality by removing O₃. To efficiently reduce O₃ in cities, it is important to define suitable urban forest management, including proper species selection, with focus on the removal ability of O₃ and other air pollutants, biogenic emission rates, allergenic effects and maintenance requirements. This study reanalyzes the literature to i) quantify O₃ removal by urban vegetation categorized into trees/shrubs and green roofs; ii) rank 95 urban plant species based on the ability to maximize air quality and minimize disservices, and iii) provide novel insights on the management of urban green spaces to maximize urban air quality. Trees showed higher O₃ removal capacity (3.4 g m⁻² year⁻¹ on average) than green roofs (2.9 g m⁻² year⁻¹ as average removal rate), with lower installation and maintenance costs (around 10 times). To overcome present gaps and uncertainties, a novel Species-specific Air Quality Index (S-AQI) of suitability to air quality improvement is proposed for tree/shrub species. We recommend city planners to select species with an S-AQI>8, i.e. with high O₃ removal capacity, O₃-tolerant, resistant to pests and diseases, tolerant to drought and non-allergenic (e.g. Acer sp., Carpinus sp., Larix decidua, Prunus sp.). Green roofs can be used to supplement urban trees in improving air quality in cities. Urban vegetation, as a cost-effective and nature-based approach, aids in meeting clean air standards and should be taken into account by policy-makers.

2017
Brogan, William R. | Relyea, Rick A.
Understanding the processes that regulate contaminant impacts in nature is an increasingly important challenge. For insecticides in surface waters, the ability of aquatic plants to sorb, or bind, hydrophobic compounds has been identified as a primary mechanism by which toxicity can be mitigated (i.e. the sorption-based model). However, recent research shows that submerged plants can also rapidly mitigate the toxicity of the less hydrophobic insecticide malathion via alkaline hydrolysis (i.e. the hydrolysis-based model) driven by increased water pH resulting from photosynthesis. However, it is still unknown how generalizable these mitigation mechanisms are across the wide variety of insecticides applied today, and whether any general rules can be ascertained about which types of chemicals may be mitigated by each mechanism. We quantified the degree to which the submerged plant Elodea canadensis mitigated acute (48-h) toxicity to Daphnia magna using nine commonly applied insecticides spanning three chemical classes (carbamates: aldicarb, carbaryl, carbofuran; organophosphates: malathion, diazinon, chlorpyrifos; pyrethroids: permethrin, bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin). We found that insecticides possessing either high octanol-water partition coefficients (log Kow) values (i.e. pyrethroids) or high susceptibility to alkaline hydrolysis (i.e. carbamates and malathion) were all mitigated to some degree by E. canadensis, while the plant had no effect on insecticides possessing intermediate log Kow values and low susceptibility to hydrolysis (i.e. chlorpyrifos and diazinon). Our results provide the first general insights into which types of insecticides are likely to be mitigated by different mechanisms based on known chemical properties. We suggest that current models and mitigation strategies would be improved by the consideration of both mitigation models.

2013
Oguntimehin, Ilemobayo | Bandai, Sayuri | Sakugawa, Hiroshi
The negative health effects of simulated acid mists and fluoranthene on juvenile Japanese red pine were investigated, and the methods of protection from these pollutants were examined. The needle gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, chemical contents and visual damage to needles caused by acid mist applied alone or its conjunction with fluoranthene were investigated over 60 d and 20 d, respectively. Acid mist at pH 2 and 3 caused physiological and visual damage, which was enhanced by the addition of fluoranthene to the mist. However, fluoranthene and acid mist at pH 4 and 5 showed only minor effects. These findings indicate that acid mist may be more harmful to pine trees if it occurs in conjunction with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, suppression of the singular and additive effects of these compounds was achieved using mannitol, which may be widely applicable to suppression of reactive oxygen species-mediated plant damage.

2022
Arias, Andrés H. | Alfonso, María B. | Girones, Lautaro | Piccolo, María C. | Marcovecchio, Jorge E.
Evidence shows that the majority of aquatic field microplastics (MPs) could be microfibers (MFs) which can be originated directly from massive sources such as textile production and shedding from garments, agricultural textiles and clothes washing. In addition, wear and tear of tyres (TRWPs) emerges as a stealthy major source of micro and nanoplastics, commonly under-sampled/detected in the field. In order to compile the current knowledge in regards to these two major MPs sources, concentrations of concern in aquatic environments, their distribution, bulk emission rates and water mitigation strategies were systematically reviewed. Most of the aquatic field studies presented MFs values above 50%. MPs concentrations varied from 0.3 to 8925 particles m⁻³ in lakes, from 0.69 to 8.7 × 10⁶ particles m⁻³ in streams and rivers, from 0.16 to 192000 particles m⁻³ estuaries, and from 0 to 4600 particles m⁻³ in the ocean. Textiles at every stage of production, use and disposal are the major source of synthetic MFs to water. Laundry estimates showed an averaged release up to 279972 tons year⁻¹ (high washing frequency) from which 123000 tons would annually flow through untreated effluents to rivers, streams, lakes or directly to the ocean. TRWPs in the aquatic environments showed concentrations up to 179 mg L⁻¹ (SPM) in runoff river sediments and up to 480 mg g⁻¹ in highway runoff sediments. Even though average TRWR emission is of 0.95 kg year⁻¹ per capita (10 nm- 500 μm) there is a general scarcity of information about their aquatic environmental levels probably due to no-availability or inadequate methods of detection. The revision of strategies to mitigate the delivering of MFs and TRWP into water streams illustrated the importance of domestic laundry retention devices, Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) with at least a secondary treatment and stormwater and road-runoff collectors quality improvement devices.
