Rare earth elements (REEs) concentrated in soils have attracted increasing attention about their impact on soil health as emerging contaminants. However, the sources of REEs enriched in soils are diverse and need to be further investigated. Here, surface soil samples were collected from southern Jiangxi Province, China. REEs contents and soil physicochemical properties were determined, and cerium (Ce) and europium (Eu) anomalies were calculated. Moreover, we established a model to further identify the main sources of REEs accumulation in the studied soils. Results show that the abundance of soil REEs reveals larger spatial variation, suggesting spatially heterogeneous distribution of REEs. The median content of light REEs in soils (154.5 mg kg⁻¹) of the study area was higher than that of heavy REEs and yttrium (35.8 mg kg⁻¹). In addition, most of the soil samples present negative Ce anomalies and all the soil samples present negative Eu anomalies implying the combined effect of weathering and potential exogenous inputs on soil REEs. Positive matrix factorization modeling reveals that soil REEs content is primarily influenced by soil parent materials. Potential anthropogenic sources include mining-related leachate, traffic exhaust, and industrial dust. These results demonstrate that the identification of sources of soil REEs is an important starting point for targeted REEs sources management and regulation of excessive and potentially harmful REEs levels in the soil.

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are critical elements for a wide range of applications and consumer products. Their growing extraction and use can potentially lead to REY and anthropogenic-REY chemical complexes (ACC-REY) being released in the marine environment, causing concern regarding their potential effects on organisms and ecosystems. Here, we critically review the scientific knowledge on REY sources (geogenic and anthropogenic), factors affecting REY distribution and transfer in the marine environment, as well as accumulation in- and effects on marine biota. Further, we aim to draw the attention to research gaps that warrant further scientific attention to assess the potential risk posed by anthropogenic REY release. Geochemical processes affecting REY mobilisation from natural sources and factors affecting their distribution and transfer across marine compartments are well established, featuring a high variability dependent on local conditions. There is, however, a research gap with respect to evaluating the environmental distribution and fate of REY from anthropogenic sources, particularly regarding ACC-REY, which can have a high persistence in seawater. In addition, data on organismal uptake, accumulation, organ distribution and effects are scarce and at best fragmentary. Particularly, the effects of ACC-REY at organismal and community levels are, so far, not sufficiently studied. To assess the potential risks caused by anthropogenic REY release there is an urgent need to i) harmonise data reporting to promote comparability across studies and environmental matrices, ii) conduct research on transport, fate and behaviour of ACC-REY vs geogenic REY iii) deepen the knowledge on bioavailability, accumulation and effects of ACC-REY and REY mixtures at organismal and community level, which is essential for risk assessment of anthropogenic REY in marine ecosystems.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are generally defined as a homogenous group of elements with similar physical-chemical properties, encompassing Y and Sc and the lanthanides elements series. Natural REEs contents in soils depend on the parent material, the soil genesis processes and can be gradually added to the soil by anthropogenic activities. The REEs have been considered emerging pollutants in several countries, so the establishment of regulatory guidelines is necessary to avoid environmental contamination. In Brazil, REE soils data are restricted to some regions, and knowledge about them in the Amazon soils is scarce, although this biome covers more than 40% of the Brazilian territory. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine the REE content in soils of two hydrographic basins (Solimões and Rio Negro) of the Amazon biome, establish their Quality Reference Values (QRV) and to investigate the existence of enrichment of REEs in urban soils. The ΣREE(Y + Sc) content of Solimões surface samples was 109.28 mg kg⁻¹ and the ΣREE(Y + Sc) content in the subsurface samples was 94.11 mg kg⁻¹. In soils of Rio Negro basin, the ΣREE(Y + Sc) was 43.95 15 mg kg⁻¹ surface samples and 38.40 mg kg⁻¹ in subsurface samples. The ΣREE(Y + Sc) in urban topsoils samples was 38.62 mg kg⁻¹. The REEs contents pattern in three studied areas are influenced in different amplitude by natural soil properties. The REEs content in urban topsoils were slightly higher than the Rio Negro pristine soils, but the ecological risk was low. QRVs recommend for Solimões soils ranged from 0.01 (Lu) to 145.6 mg kg⁻¹ (Ce) and for Rio Negro soils ranged from 0.05 (Lu) to 15.8 mg kg⁻¹ (Ce).

Our knowledge of the processes leading to the bioaccumulation of rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic biota is limited. As the contamination of freshwater ecosystems by anthropogenic REE have recently been reported, it becomes increasingly urgent to understand how these metals are transferred to freshwater organisms in order to develop appropriate guidelines. We exposed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to an REE, yttrium (Y), to either a range of Y-contaminated prey (Daphnia magna) or a range of Y-contaminated water. For the feeding experiment, the relationship between the Y assimilation by O. mykiss and the Y subcellular fractionation in D. magna was evaluated. Assimilation efficiency of Y by O. mykiss was low, ranging from 0.8 to 3%. These values were close to the proportion of Y accumulated in D. magna cytosol, 0.6–2%, a theoretical trophically available fraction. Moreover, under our laboratory conditions, water appeared as a poor source of Y transfer to O. mykiss. Regardless of the source of contamination, a similar pattern of Y bioaccumulation among O. mykiss tissues was revealed: muscles < liver < gills < intestine. We conclude that the trophic transfer potential of Y is low and the evaluation of Y burden in prey cytosol appears to be a relevant predictor of Y assimilation by their consumers.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are of major concern due to their high persistence and toxicity. Recently, rare earth elements (REEs) concentration in aquatic ecosystems has been increasing due to their application in modern technologies. Thus, this work aimed to study, for the first time, the influence of REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium) and of salinity (10 and 30) on the removal of PTEs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb) from contaminated waters by living macroalgae (Fucus spiralis, Fucus vesiculosus, Gracilaria sp., Osmundea pinnatifida, Ulva intestinalis and Ulva lactuca). Experiments ran for 168 h, with each macroalga exposed to saline water spiked with the six PTEs and with the six PTEs plus nine REEs (all at 1 μmol L⁻¹) at both salinities. Results showed that all species have high affinity with Hg (90–99% of removal), not being affected neither by salinity changes nor by the presence of other PTEs or REEs. Cd showed the lowest affinity to most macroalgae, with residual concentrations in water varying between 50 and 108 μg L⁻¹, while Pb removal always increased with salinity decline (up to 80% at salinity 10). REEs influence was clearer at salinity 30, and mainly for Pb. No substantial changes were observed in Ni and Hg sorption. For the remaining elements, the effect of REEs varied among algae species. Overall, the results highlight the role of marine macroalgae as living biofilters (particularly U. lactuca), capable of lowering the levels of top priority hazardous substances (particularly Hg) and other PTEs in water, even in the presence of the new emerging contaminants - REEs. Differences in removal efficiency between elements and macroalgae are explained by the contaminant chemistry in water and by macroalgae characteristics.

Pharmacologically active compounds found in reclaimed wastewater irrigation or animal manure fertilizers pose potential risks for agriculture. The mechanism underlying the effects of ketoprofen on rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was investigated. The results showed that low concentrations (0.5 mg L⁻¹) of ketoprofen slightly stimulate growth of rice seedlings, while high concentrations can significantly inhibit growth by reducing biomass and causing damage to roots. Ketoprofen affects photosynthetic pigment content (Chla, Chlb, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll synthesis gene (HEMA, HEMG, CHLD, CHLG, CHLM, and CAO) expression. Fluorescence parameters such as minimum fluorescence (F₀), maximum fluorescence (Fₘ), variable fluorescence (Fᵥ), potential photosynthetic capacity (Fᵥ/F₀), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fᵥ/Fₘ), electron transfer rate (ETR), and Y(II), Y(NPQ), Y(NO) values were affected, showing photosynthetic electron transfer was blocked. Active oxygen radical (O₂•−and H₂O₂), malondialdehyde and proline content increased. Superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities, glutathione content and antioxidant-related gene (FSD1, MSD1, CSD1, CSD2, CAT1, CAT2, CAT3, APX1, APX2) expression were induced. Higher integrated biomarker response values of eight oxidative stress response indexes were obtained at higher ketoprofen concentrations. Ultrastructure observation showed that ketoprofen causes cell structure damage, chloroplast swelling, increase in starch granules, and reduction in organelles. This study provides some suggested toxicological mechanisms and biological response indicators in rice due to stress from pharmacologically active compounds.

Nickel is a ubiquitous heavy-metal pollutant in lakes and severely affects aquatic organisms. Aquatic plants are often initially linked to having heavy metal contents and further are proposed as phytoremediation agent to remove heavy metal from water. Although the toxic effects of nickel on aquatic plants are thoroughly explored, the effective investigation to increase Ni tolerance is still in its infancy. The role of rare-earth elements (REEs) in plant resisting heavy-metal pollution has recently received considerable interest. To explore the physiological effects of REEs on Potamogeton crispus under Ni stress, we explored whether or not the additive exposure to low-dose yttrium (Y; 2.5 μM) promotes the polyamine metabolism, antioxidation, and photosynthesis performance of P. crispus under Ni stress values of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 μM. Results showed that Y exposure did not influence Ni bioaccumulation in P. crispus. Furthermore, Y exposure alleviated the adverse effects of Ni stress to convergent degrees because Y positively converts putrescine into spermidine and spermine, inhibits oxidative stress, increases the total chlorophyll content, and maximum/potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II. We concluded that low-dose Y can positively regulate polyamine transformation, inhibit oxidative stress, stimulate photosynthesis, and finally promote the resist ability of P. crispus to nickel stress. Thus, REEs have potential to be applied in regulating submerged plant tolerance to aquatic heavy-metal pollution.

Studies have shown that residents living near rare earth mining areas have high concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) in their hair. However, the adverse effects of REEs on human health have rarely been the focus of epidemiological studies. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between REEs in hair and the risk of hypertension in housewives. We recruited 398 housewives in Shanxi Province, China, consisting of 163 women with hypertension (cases) and 235 healthy women without hypertension (controls). We analyzed 15 REEs (lanthanum (La), samarium (Sm), europium (Eu), gadolinium (Gd), terbium (Tb), dysprosium (Dy), holmium (Ho), erbium (Er), thulium (Tm), ytterbium (Yb), lutetium (Lu), Yttrium (Y), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), and neodymium (Nd)) and calcium (Ca) accumulated in housewives hair over a period of two years. The results revealed that, with the exception of Eu, concentrations of the REEs in hair were higher in the cases than in the controls. The univariate odds ratios (ORs) of the 14 REEs were >1, and four of the REEs (Dy, Tm, Yb, and Y) also had adjusted ORs > 1. The increasing dose-response trends of the four REEs further indicated the potential for increased hypertension risk. Moreover, the REEs were negatively correlated with Ca content in hair. These results might suggest an antagonistic effect of REEs on Ca in the human body. It was concluded that high intake of REEs might increase the risk of hypertension among housewives.

Understanding how engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) interact with natural organic acids is important to ecological risk assessment of ENPs, but this interaction remains poorly studied. Here, we investigate the dispersion stability, ion release, and toxicity of yttrium oxide nanoparticles (nY2O3) suspensions after exposure to two low molecular weight natural organic acids (LOAs), namely benzoic acid and gallic acid. We find that in the presence of LOAs the nY2O3 suspensions become more stable with surface zeta potential more positive or negative, accompanied by small agglomerated size. LOA interaction with nY2O3 is shown to promote the release of dissolved yttrium from the nanoparticles, depending on the concentrations of LOAs. Toxic effects of the nY2O3 suspensions incubated with LOAs on Scenedesmus obliquus as a function of their mixture levels show three types of signs: stimulation, inhibition, and alleviation. The mechanism of the effects of LOAs on the nY2O3 toxicity may be mainly associated with the degree of agglomeration, particle-induced oxidative stress, and dissolved yttrium. Our results stressed the importance of LOA impacts on the fate and toxicity of ENPs in the aquatic environment.

Both occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos-mineral fibres can be associated with lung diseases. The pathogenic effects are related to the dimension, biopersistence and chemical composition of the fibres. In addition to the major mineral elements, mineral fibres contain trace elements and their content may play a role in fibre toxicity. To shed light on the role of trace elements in asbestos carcinogenesis, knowledge on their concentration in asbestos-mineral fibres is mandatory. It is possible that trace elements play a synergetic factor in the pathogenesis of diseases caused by the inhalation of mineral fibres. In this paper, the concentration levels of trace elements from three chrysotile samples, four amphibole asbestos samples (UICC amosite, UICC anthophyllite, UICC crocidolite and tremolite) and fibrous erionite from Jersey, Nevada (USA) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For all samples, the following trace elements were measured: Li, Be, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Pb, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Th, U. Their distribution in the various mineral species is thoroughly discussed.The obtained results indicate that the amount of trace metals such as Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn is higher in anthophyllite and chrysotile samples, whereas the amount of rare earth elements (REE) is higher in erionite and tremolite samples. The results of this work can be useful to the pathologists and biochemists who use asbestos minerals and fibrous erionite in-vitro studies as positive cyto- and geno-toxic standard references.
