Application of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) passive samplers for monitoring PAHs in groundwater Texto completo

Equilibrium passive sampling continues to find increasing use for performing in situ assessments and monitoring of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). Although this method has been successfully used in several field studies including open surface waters and sediments, comparatively, their use in groundwater has been very limited. In this study, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) passive samplers were deployed for 80 days in three groundwater wells contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Prior to deployment, LDPE was loaded with performance reference compounds (PRCs) consisting of deuterated PAHs and their release used to ascertain system equilibrium. Within the 80-day deployment period, LDPE-groundwater equilibrium was confirmed for PAHs with molecular weights (MWs) in the range of 178 to 228 (i.e. anthracene, chrysene). Measured freely dissolved concentrations (Cw) were between one to three orders of magnitude lower than the total filtered concentrations (Ctotal) in the studied wells. The sum of PAHs (ΣPAHs) measured based on Cw and Ctotal were 2.05, 0.07 and 29.2 μg L−1 and 197, 59.7 and 1010 μg L−1, at wells 1, 2 and 3, respectively. A separate dataset, comprising long-term (2010 to 2022) concentrations of PAHs in total (i.e., unfiltered) groundwater, is also presented to provide insight into PAH contamination levels at the assessed groundwater wells based on conventional measurement. Estimated in situ LDPE daily clearance volumes (2.34 to 27.56 Ld−1) for the target analytes were far less than the daily turnover of ground water (144 to 348 Ld−1) encountered in the wells eliminating the possibility of depletive sampling of the groundwater by the passive samplers. These results represent the first published study on the practical application of equilibrium passive sampling using LDPE for monitoring and quantitatively assessing PAHs in groundwater. Also, this work demonstrates that LDPEs are a useful tool for measuring the Cw of PAHs in groundwater, a critical contaminant in many ecological and human health risk assessments. | publishedVersion

Large nutrient levels and herbivory stress, particularly when acting together, drive a variety of responses in seagrass communities that ultimately may weaken their carbon balance. An in situ three-months experiment was carried out in two contrasting seasons to address the effects of two levels of nutrient load and three levels of artificial clipping on Cymodocea nodosa plants. Nutrient enrichment shifted the community from autotrophic to heterotrophic and reduced DOC fluxes in winter, whereas enhanced community carbon metabolism and DOC fluxes in summer. Herbivory stress decreased the net primary production in both seasons, whereas net DOC release increased in winter but decreased in summer. A reduction of seagrass food-web structure was observed under both disturbances evidencing impacts on the seagrass ecosystems services by altering the carbon transfer process and the loss of superficial OC, which may finally weaken the blue carbon storage capacity of these communities.

peer reviewed | The northwestern shelf of the Black Sea has been affected by eutrophication and bottom hypoxia since the sixties. Consequently, the macrozoobenthos has suffered a well-established decline in biodiversity. However, the nature of the current benthic communities remains questionable. From 1995 to 2017, we compiled species and abiotic data for 138 sites over the shelf. Through an appropriate multivariate analytical approach, we identified benthic community changes solely due to organic pollution variations. Our results show signs of recovery with an increase in biodiversity and proportion of species vulnerable to organic enrichment. These changes were related to a decrease in riverine loads and subsequent eutrophication. However, some long-lived species typical of the area still did not exhibit noticeable recovery, which suggests that either the recovery process has not yet been achieved or some environmental conditions are still not met to warrant a sea floor ecosystem state substantially healthy. | 14. International audience | Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is a major urban perturbation, which can have detrimental effects on wildlife. Recent urban planning has led to an increased use of white light emission diodes (LEDs) in cities. However, little is known about the effects of this type of ALAN on wild vertebrates, especially during reproduction. We designed an experiment to test the impact of ALAN on the activity rhythms (daily time of first activity (TFA) and time of last activity (TLA)) of captive House sparrows (Passer domesticus) during several reproductive stages (from pre-breeding to post-breeding). We also tested the impact of ALAN on reproductive performance (laying date, clutch size, hatching and fledging success). Experimental birds were active earlier in the morning (earlier TFA) relative to controls although experimental and control birds did not differ in their TLA. The effect of ALAN on TFA was apparent during specific stages only (pre-breeding and chick-rearing stages), suggesting that sparrows actively adjust their activity in response to ALAN only during specific periods. This impact of ALAN on activity did not persist through the whole breeding season, suggesting that sparrows may habituate to ALAN. Alternatively, they may not be able to sustain a long-term increased activity in response to ALAN because of sleep deprivation and related physiological costs. Finally, we did not find any impact of ALAN on the reproductive performance of captive house sparrows held under optimal conditions. This suggests that ALAN may not be dramatically detrimental to the reproduction of this urban exploiter, at least when food availability is not constraining.

High altitude (alpine) lakes are efficient sentinels of environmental processes, including local pollution and long-range atmospheric transfer, because these lakes are highly vulnerable to ongoing climate changes and increasing anthropogenic pressure. Towards improving the knowledge of trace element geochemistry in the water column of alpine lakes, we assessed 64 physico-chemical parameters, including macro- and micronutrients, major and trace element concentrations in the water column of 18 lakes in the Pyrenees, located along the border between France and Spain. Lake depth, morphology, retention time and watershed rock lithology did not exhibit sizable impact on major and trace element concentrations in the water column. However, acidic (pH = 4.7 ± 0.2) lakes were distinctly different from circumneutral lakes (pH = 6.8 ± 0.5) as they exhibited >10 times higher concentrations of SO42− and trace metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb, Co, Ni, Be, Al, Ga and REEs). While some of these elements clearly mark the presence of sulphide-rich minerals within the watershed (Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb), the increased mobility of lithogenic elements (Be, Al, Ga and REEs) in acidic lakes may reflect the leaching of these elements from silicate dust derived from atmospheric deposits or surrounding granites. At the same time, compared to circumneutral lakes, acidic lake water displayed lower concentrations of dissolved oxyanions (As, Mo, V, B and W) and elevated SO42− concentrations. The latter could lead to efficient Ba removal from the water column. The exploitation of metal ores within the watershed of three lakes clearly impacted high Zn and Cd concentrations observed in their water column, despite two of these lakes not being acidic. We conclude that local impacts have a greater effect on the water column than long-range atmospheric inputs and that dissolved trace element concentration measurements can be used for revealing sulphide-rich minerals or acid mine drainage within the lakes’ watershed.

International audience | Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the atmosphere is of particular concern due to its adverse effects on human health and its impact on global warming. southeast Asia is a hot spot for fossil fuel combustion with recurrent release of large plumes spreading over the ocean and neighbouring countries. Due to the complex mixture of PM2.5, the atmospheric sources contribution related to local and regional emissions in Hanoi (northern Vietnam) is still ill-constrained. Here, we present a year-round study (November 2019 to December 2020) with measurements of 18 metals and metalloids (MM) and lead isotopes in the PM2.5 fraction to quantify weather-related atmospheric inputs and to assess risk to human health. Anthropogenic inputs from fossil fuel combustion accounted for about 80% in PM2.5. We found high PM2.5-bound MM concentrations often exceeding national and global standards with a low risk of chronic inhalation and carcinogenicity, mainly attributable to Cr. During winter monsoon (northeastern winds), stable weather conditions led to the enrichment of long-range air mass transport of local particulate emissions. During the summer monsoon (southeastern winds), warm and moist winds reduced coal contribution in PM2.5. Our study highlights the need for a strict implementation of policies to control hazardous MM emissions by reducing fossil fuel combustion. On the one hand, reducing coal-related activities could reduce Cr emissions and therefore improve the risks to human health. On the other hand, public policies should encourage conversion to green transport in order to reduce petrol combustion and thus limit global warming.

International audience | <div><p>Aerated compost teas (ACTs) are rich in soluble humic substances (SHS) that have high affinity for metals, notably Cu. Using a batch experiment, we measured the extent to which two ACTs altered Cu dynamics in vineyard topsoils one day and 21 days after their addition. Soils were extracted with 0.01 M KCl, and total Cu concentration, free Cu ion fraction and size distribution of Cu ligands were measured in the extraction solution to assess the impact of ACT on the mobility of Cu. Diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) measurements were carried out to assess the effect of ACT on Cu bioavailability, and the dissociation rate of Cu-SHS complexes was measured. The results revealed that ACT increased the mobility of Cu from a factor 1.2 to 5.8 depending on the soil, the ACT and the incubation time. Cu mobilization was associated with an increase in absorbance at 254 nm and a decrease in the free Cu ion fraction in the KCl extract. Associated with the strong agreement between the size distribution of SHS and that of Cu ligands in the KCl extract of soils treated with ACT, these results showed that Cu was mobilized through complexation by the SHS present in ACTs. A fraction of the SHS supplied with ACTs sorbed onto the soil constituents, notably in calcareous soils where this fraction reached 86% for ACT B. Between 15% and 50% of the SHS remaining in solution degraded between day one and day 21 under the presumed action of microflora. This explains why the Cu mobilization efficiency of ACTs was on average lower in calcareous soils than in non-calcareous soils, and decreased with time. Lastly, ACT increased the bioavailability of Cu in soils from a factor 1.3 to 4.2, due to the relatively high dissociation rate of Cu-SHS complexes.</p></div>

International audience | Wetlands are among the most threatened ecosystems on the planet and pollution is a major factor causing the decline of wetland biodiversity. Despite the increasing use of pesticides, their fate and effects on freshwater reptiles remain largely unknown. We studied the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), a long-lived species at risk with a high exposure potential to pesticides. Between 2018 and 2020, we measured 29 pesticides and metabolites in 408 blood samples of turtles from two populations in the Camargue wetland (France). We were able to quantify 24 compounds and at least one pesticide or one degradation product in 62.5% of samples. Pesticide occurrences and concentrations were low, except for a herbicide widely used in rice cultivation and locally detected in water: bentazone that reached high blood concentrations in E. orbicularis. The occurrence and the concentration of pesticides in E. orbicularis blood depended mainly on the site and the sampling date in relation to pesticide application. Individual characteristics (sex, age, body condition) did not explain the occurrence or the concentration of pesticides found in turtle blood. Assessing the exposure of aquatic wildlife to a cocktail of currently-used pesticides is a first and crucial step before studying their effects at the individual and population levels.

Antibiotics, frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, can negatively impact the health of resident organisms. Although the study on the possible effects of antibiotics on these organisms has been increasing, there is still little information available on the molecular effects on exposed non-target organisms. In our study we used a label free proteomic approach and sea bream, Sparus aurata, to evaluate the effects of exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the antibiotic compounds ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfadiazine (SULF) and trimethoprim (TRIM) produced at the protein level. Individuals of sea bream were exposed to single compounds at 5.2 ± 2.1 μg L− 1 of CIP, 3.8 ± 2.7 μg L− 1 of SULF and 25.7 ± 10.8 μg L− 1 of TRIM for 21 days. After exposure, the number of differentially expressed proteins in the liver was 39, 73 and 4 for CIP, SULF and TRIM respectively. In the brain, there was no alteration of proteins after CIP and TRIM treatment, while 9 proteins were impacted after SULF treatment. The differentially expressed proteins were involved in cellular biological, metabolic, developmental, growth and biological regulatory processes.
