Environmental drivers of sheltering behaviour in large reef fishes

Studies of shelter use can provide key insights into the ecology, and structural needs of mobile organisms. Using videos, we examined the usage of tabular corals by large reef fishes, over a 10week period, compared to multiple environmental drivers: visibility, tide (and depth), irradiance, wind speed (as a proxy for wave energy) and water temperature. We found that two of these predictor variables (visibility and wind speed) had a significant effect and together accounted for almost half of the variation in tabular coral usage by fishes. Increases in both variables correlated with increased shelter use. To date use of shelters by fishes has primarily been attributed to UV avoidance. Our results support this notion as more turbid conditions (reduced visibility) have an attenuating effect on UV irradiance. Additionally, tabular corals may reduce the energetic costs of increased wave energy by reducing incidental water velocity beneath the structure.

A series of short-term toxicological tests were conducted on the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis to assess the toxicity of the flame retardant 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabrominated biphenyl ether (BDE-47). BDE-47 increased mortality, morphological damage, and altered population dynamics and fecundity of rotifer. Antioxidant enzymes were differentially changed to maintain the balance between antioxidant and pro-oxidant activity. However, with increases in the concentration of BDE-47, the metabolic and antioxidant activity decreased. Moreover, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde contents increased and the ratio between glutathione and glutathione-SH decreased, indicating oxidative stress. The addition of the ROS-inhibitor N-acetylcysteine alleviated the degree of damage and stimulated the activity of xenobiotic-metabolizing and antioxidant system, which suggested that ROS were the most important loop in the stress response.

This study presents the spatial distribution of total dissolved Cu, Zn, Co, and V during an autumn survey in the East China Sea (ECS). Dissolved Fe and its organic complexation were also investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between Cu, Zn, Co, V, D-Fe and its organic ligands and total dissolved phosphate (TDP) in the coastal waters of the ECS. A correlation analysis shows that Cu, Zn and D-Fe were nutrient-like metals, whereas Co and V were non-nutrient-like metals. A multivariate statistical analysis showed that TDP was associated with D-Fe, Cu, Zn and Co, but was not associated with V. Furthermore, TDP was observed to be positively related with D-Fe, while negatively with Fe′, which indicated that the limitation of TDP decreased the uptake of Fe′. This paper improves our understanding of the association among trace metals, TDP and phytoplankton biomass in the ECS.

Hard-bottom habitats with complex topography and fragile epibenthic communities are still not adequately considered in benthic monitoring programs, despite their potential ecological importance. While indicators of ecosystem health are defined by major EU directives, methods commonly used to measure them are deficient in quantification of biota on hard surfaces. We address the suitability of seafloor imaging for monitoring activities. We compared the ability of high-resolution imagery and physical sampling methods (grab, dredge, SCUBA-diving) to detect taxonomic and functional components of epibenthos. Results reveal that (1) with minimal habitat disturbance on large spatial scales, imagery provides valuable, cost-effective assessment of rocky reef habitat features and community structure, (2) despite poor taxonomic resolution, image-derived data for habitat-forming taxa might be sufficient to infer richness of small sessile and mobile fauna, (3) physical collections are necessary to develop a robust record of species richness, including species-level taxonomic identifications, and to establish a baseline.

Major flood events can dramatically alter the coastal sediment environment. This study established the current sediment distribution in a large sub-tropical embayment, Moreton Bay, Australia, and examined the effect of three recent floods on modifying this distribution. In 2015, surface sediment samples were collected from 223 sites across the study area and analysed for particle size distribution with the resultant sediment distribution mapped. In addition, sampling of flood waters during two major events in 2011 and 2013 was undertaken and particle size distribution of suspended sediment was determined. Data was compared to the result of an earlier large-scale survey completed in 1970, with three large flood events occurring between the two surveys. The sediment environment has undergone a dramatic change with muddy sediments now covering an estimated area of over 860km2, more the double the area found in 1970. Mud is now the dominant sediment type within Moreton Bay.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have broken out frequently throughout the world in recent decades; they are caused by the rapid multiplication of algal cells in near-coastal waters polluted with nitrogen and phosphorus and greatly affect the quality of marine water and human health. Over the past several decades, climate change and increasing environmental degradation have provided favourable growth conditions for certain phytoplankton species. Therefore, it is essential to rapidly identify and enumerate harmful marine algae to control these species. In this study, quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to detect four representative species of HABs that are widespread in the marine water of Hong Kong, namely, Alexandrium catenella, Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Karenia mikimotoi and Heterosigma akashiwo. We applied qPCR with the dye SYBR Green to detect Alexandrium spp. and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. and used TaqMan probe for the enumeration of Karenia mikimotoi and Heterosigma akashiwo. The total genomic DNA of these algae from Hong Kong marine water was extracted successfully using the CTAB method, and for each kind of alga, we constructed a ten-fold series of recombinant plasmid solutions containing certain gene fragments of 18S rDNA and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 as standard samples. Ten-fold dilutions of the DNA of known numbers of the extracted algal cells were also used to create an additional standard curve. In this way, the relationship between the cell number and the related plasmid copy number was established. The qPCR assay displayed high sensitivity in monitoring marine water samples in which the low concentrations of harmful algae were not detected accurately by traditional methods. The results showed that the cell numbers of the four species were all in low abundance. For Alexandrium catenella, the cell abundances at 12 sites ranged from 3.8×102 to 4.3×103cellsL−1, while H. akashiwo, K. mikimotoi and Pseudo-nitzschia ranged from 1.1×102 to 1.3×103, from 23 to 6.5×102 and from 45 to 3.3×103cellsL−1, respectively. The concentrations of these algae were much lower than those observed during outbreaks of HABs in Hong Kong. These results may be useful for local aquaculture development and may provide effective suggestions and a theoretical basis for HAB monitoring and management.

The fate of trace elements in reef depositional environments has not been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to determine the partitioning of Pb in sediments of the Veracruz Reef System, and its relation to local environmental sources. Lead was determined in four geochemical fractions: exchangeable (3.8±0.4μgg−1), carbonate (57.0±13.6μgg−1), organic matter (2.0±0.9μgg−1), and mineral (17.5±5.4μgg−1). For the mineral fraction, lead concentrations were higher in those reefs influenced by river discharge or by long-distance transport of terrigenous sediments. The bioavailable concentration of lead (range: 21.9–85.6μgg−1) indicates that the Veracruz Reef System is a moderately polluted area. As expected, the carbonate fraction contained the highest proportion of Pb (70%), and because the reef framework is largely made up of by biogenic carbonate sediments, hence, it is therefore the most important repository of Pb in coral reef depositional environments.

The activities of the natural radionuclides (238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K) of the surface sediments in the Yangtze Estuary were determined and used to evaluate radiation hazards in the study area. The of activities of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K ranges from 14.1 to 62.3, 26.1 to 71.9, 13.7 to 52.3, and 392 to 898Bqkg−1, respectively, which were comparable to values of other regions in China. The activities of 232Th, 40K and 226Ra were clearly different from the global recommended values. The radium equivalent activity was less than the recommended limit of 370Bqkg−1; therefore, the sediment in this area can be safely used for reclamation. The external hazard index values were less than one. The average absorbed gamma dose rate and annual effective dose equivalent values were slightly greater than the world average value. 226Ra/238U and 232Th/238U ratios could potentially be applied for tracing sediment source.

Eight sandy beaches along the coastline of Qatar and four sea surface stations on the eastern coast, adjacent to Doha Bay, were surveyed between December 2014 and March 2015. Microplastics, mainly low density polyethylene and polypropylene, were found in all samples of sediments and seawater. Blue fibers, ranging between 1 and 5mm, were the dominant type of particle present. Abundances on the sea surface varied between 4.38×104 and 1.46×106particles·km−2, with the highest values being consistently found 10km offshore, suggesting the presence of a convergence zone. No significant temporal variability was detected for sea surface samples. The concentration of microplastics in intertidal sediments varied between 36 and 228particlesm−2, with no significant differences among the 8 beaches examined. These results show the pervasiveness of microplastic pollution in coastal environments of the Arabian Gulf. Potential local sources and sinks for microplastics are discussed.

This study explores how plasticity in biochemical attributes, used as indicators of health and condition, enables the coral Acropora tenuis to respond to differing water quality regimes in inshore regions of the Great Barrier Reef. Health attributes were monitored along a strong and weak water quality gradient, each with three reefs at increasing distances from a major river source. Attributes differed significantly only along the strong gradient; corals grew fastest, had the least dense skeletons, highest symbiont densities and highest lipid concentrations closest to the river mouth, where water quality was poorest. High nutrient and particulate loads were only detrimental to skeletal density, which decreased as linear extension increased, highlighting a trade-off. Our study underscores the importance of assessing multiple health attributes in coral reef monitoring. For example, autotrophic indices are poor indicators of coral health and condition, but improve when combined with attributes like lipid content and biomass.
