The sequential elution technique (SET) is used to determine the distribution of elements in the different cell fractions of mosses. The extracellular extractants most commonly used in this technique are NiCl2 and EDTA, although there are certain disadvantages associated with their use. In order to avoid such problems, we searched for new extractants that displace extracellularly bound metals, either because they are present at high concentrations (Ca) or because they have a high affinity for cation exchange sites (Hg and Au). The compounds HCl, NaCl, and CaCl2 were tested as extractants of the former type, as possible alternatives for the determination of extracellular metals in the moss Pseudoscleropodium purum. Calcium chloride was finally chosen as is it potentially the most successful in terms of binding to the cation exchange sites without altering the membrane permeability. The concentration chosen was 160 mM, as this yielded maximum displacement of Zn without membrane alterations. An experiment was then carried out to test the efficiency of Ca in extracting extracellular Zn, under laboratory and field conditions. In addition, Hg and Au were tested, at different concentrations, as extractants with high affinity for cation exchange sites, as neither of these elements has previously been used in the SET, and both display electronic characteristics that suggest their potential usefulness in displacing other cations from cation exchange sites. The results obtained show that extraction of extracellularly bound metal by high concentrations of Ca should be ruled out, as total extraction of Zn was not achieved. Both Hg and Au produced membrane alterations at low concentrations and moreover, neither was more efficient at extracting Zn than the reference extractant (20 mM NiCl2).

There are several classes of subsurface colloids, abiotic and biotic. Basically, small particles of inorganic, organic and pathogenic biocolloids variety exist in natural subsurface system. Transport of these pathogenic biocolloidal contaminants (Viruses, bacteria and protozoa) pose a great risk in water resources and have caused large outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Biocolloid transport processes through saturated and unsaturated porous media is of significant interest, from the perspective of protection of groundwater supplies from contamination, assessment of risk from pathogens in groundwater and for the design of better water treatment systems to remove biocolloids from drinking water supplies This paper has reviewed the large volume of work that has already been done and the progress that has been made towards understanding the various basic multi-processes to predicting the biocolloid transport in saturated and unsaturated porous media. There are several basic processes such as physical, chemical and biological processes which are important in biocolloid transport. The physical processes such as advection, dispersion, diffusion, straining and physical filtration, adsorption and biological processes such as growth/decay processes and include active adhesion/detachment, survival and chemotaxis are strongly affected on biocolloid transport in saturated and unsaturated porous media. The unsaturated zone may play an important role in protecting aquifers from biocolloidal contamination by retaining them in the solid phase during their transport through the zone. Finally, author here highlighted the future research direction based on his critical review on biocolloid transport in saturated and unsaturated porous media.

Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, BPA), a representative endocrine-disrupting compound, was carried out in the presence of the Ti-MCM-41 mesoporous molecular sieve in this investigation. The degradation rate was strongly dependent on those factors such as the catalyst, catalyst amount, radiation time, and pH value. The photolysis reaction was found to follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. After the photocatalytic treatment, decomposition of BPA rendered five intermediates as follows: 2-methyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, 1,1-diethoxyethane, isobutanol, and 3-methylbutanal, which could be the direct evidence supporting our proposal for the degradation mechanism.

The main goals of this study were (1) to standardize a simple and reliable embryotoxicity test for environmental contaminants and (2) to evaluate the presence and possible protective role of the multidrug resistance-associated (MRP) protein-mediated multixenobiotic defense in two Mediterranean sea urchin species, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula. Toxic end-point used was the success of the first cell division in sea urchin embryos. Embryotoxicities of three environmentally relevant contaminants: mercuric chloride (HgCl2, 0.05–6 μM), trybutiltin (TBT, 2.5–500 nM), and oxybenzone (OXI, 0.1–100 μM); as well as seawater samples collected from the polluted and unpolluted locations, were determined and compared. A. lixula embryos were more sensitive to all three toxic compounds, and both P. lividus and A. lixula embryos were highly sensitive to TBT at nanomolar concentrations (EC50 49 ± 5 and 36.8 ± 3 nM, respectively). Inhibition of MRP protein by specific inhibitor MK571 caused significant increase in embryotoxic potency of HgCl2 (EC50 0.697 ± 0.03 and 0.245 ± 0.04 μM, respectively), TBT (EC50 24 ± 3 and 7.4 ± 1 nM, respectively) and polluted seawater sample, but not of OXI or unpolluted, natural seawater. Therefore, our results demonstrated for the first time the protective relevance of MRP proteins in early development of these two Mediterranean sea urchin species. Finally, the embryotoxicity protocol described in this study represents a simple and rapid bioassay for determination of environmentally relevant seawater contamination.

To date, numerous studies have employed single type nitrogen (N) addition methods in reporting influences of N deposition on soil extracellular enzymatic activities (EEA) during litter decomposition in forest ecosystems. As natural atmospheric N deposition is a set of complex compounds including inorganic N and organic N, it is essential for investigating responses of soil EEA to various mixed N fertilization. In a subtropical forest stand in Zijin Mountain, East China, various N fertilizers with different inorganic N and organic N ratios were added to soils monthly from 2008 to 2009. Samples were harvested from N fertilized and control plots every 4 months. Subsequently, six EEA were assayed. A laboratory experiment was also conducted simultaneously. Both field and laboratory experiments showed that various mixed N fertilizations revealed different influences on soil EEA. Acceleration of most soil EEA by mixed N fertilization was greater than that of single N fertilization. The majority of soil extracellular enzymes exhibited the highest activities under mixed N fertilization, with the ratio of inorganic N to organic N at 3:7. These results suggested that N type and ratio of inorganic N and organic N were important factors controlling soil EEA, and the 3:7 ratio of inorganic N and organic N may be the optimum for soil EEA.

Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) is a tall (1.0–2.0 m) high biomass perennial herb which accumulates considerable amounts of metals on contaminated sites. An outdoor pot experiment was conducted on a sandy, slightly alkaline soil of moderate fertility to study the uptake of cadmium and the distribution of Cd in plant tissues of A. vulgaris. Cadmium was applied as CdCl2 (a total of 1 l solution of 0, 10, 50 and 100 mg Cd l−1) to 12-l pots with a height of 25 cm. HNO3- and water-extractable concentrations of Cd were correlated with the applied Cd at 2-cm soil depth, but were not correlated at 20-cm soil depth, suggesting that Cd was either not mobile in the soil or completely taken up by mugwort roots. The Cd concentrations in different organs of A. vulgaris and litter increased with increasing soil contamination. Leaf/soil concentration ratios (BCFs) up to 65.93 ± 32.26 were observed. Translocation of Cd to the aboveground organs was very high. The leaf/root Cd concentration ratio (translocation factor) ranged from 2.07 ± 0.56 to 2.37 ± 1.31; however, there was no correlation of translocation factors to Cd enrichment, indicating similar translocation upon different soil contamination levels. In summary, A. vulgaris is tolerant to the metal concentrations accumulated, has a high metal accumulating biomass and accumulates Cd up to about 70% in the aboveground parts. Both a high phytoextraction potential and a high value for phytostabilisation would recommend mugwort for phytoremediation.

Environmental constrains and anthropogenic changes can contribute simultaneously to the limitation of plant performance in Mediterranean urban areas. Photosynthetic efficiency of Quercus ilex L. leaves from the urban area of Naples was evaluated by comparison with leaves from remote site (Vesuvius National Park). The photosynthetic performance of leaves with different age (current year [CY], 1- [1Y] and 2-year old [2Y]) was assessed by measurements of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment contents. The photosynthetic activity at the urban site was higher than that at the remote site for the CY leaves, while the opposite was observed for the 1Y and 2Y leaves. The growth of Q. ilex trees was mainly sustained by the CY leaves at the urban site, whereas at the remote site the photosynthetic activity was not affected by leaf ageing. In the urban environment, Q. ilex leaves strongly decreased the photosynthetic performance with leaf ageing as highlighted by leaf gas exchanges, although the photochemistry did not show any significant change. The mature leaves of urban site drove the reductive power deriving from the photochemistry more in non-assimilative processes rather than in carbon assimilative ones, avoiding a strong decrease of PSII photochemical efficiency.

Sediment cores were analysed from four coastal wetland sites within the Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy to compare mercury speciation and sediment characteristics. The coastal wetland sediments were low in total mercury (mean = 17.4 ± 9.9 ng g−1); however, MeHg concentration was 92 times higher (mean of 249 pg g−1) than intertidal mudflat sediment (mean of 2.7 pg g−1). Total mercury concentrations in intertidal mudflat cores were also low (0.5–23.7 ng g−1) and correlated (Pearson correlation = 0.98; p < 0.01) with % organic carbon; with low concentrations of MeHg present only below depths of 6 cm (mean = 2.7 ± 1.0 pg g−1). Total mercury concentrations were negatively correlated (correlation = 0.56, p < 0.05) with inorganic sulphur (acid volatile sulphides (AVS) and pyrite) while MeHg concentrations were inversely correlated (Pearson correlation = −0.68; p < 0.05) with the pyrite content but not with AVS. Methyl mercury concentrations were not significantly correlated with organic carbon content in the wetland sediments, and mercury-in-biomass enrichment factors were lower (total mercury mean 1.5 ± 1.9 and MeHg mean = 3.6 ± 4.8) than published measurements from mercury polluted sites. Modelling estimates found on average 4.4 times more total mercury mass in the intertidal mudflat sediments relative to vegetated wetlands. A negative relationship was observed between MeHg concentrations (below 20 cm depth) and modelled tidal inundation. The mineral fraction within wetland sediments contained 96.2% of the total mercury mass; however, the highest concentrations of mercury species were in root biomass. This research confirms that vegetated coastal wetlands are key areas for formation of bioavailable methyl mercury, and mercury distribution is tied to organic carbon and sulphur speciation.

Neutral starch microspheres (NSMs) were synthesized with epichlorohydrin as the cross-linking agent from soluble starch by inverse microemulsion method. Anionic starch microspheres (ASMs) were prepared from NSMs by the secondary polymerization with chloroacetic acid as the anionic etherifying agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that microspheres had good sphericity and fine dispersibility, and the average particle size was about 75 μm. The adsorption procedure of Cu2+, Pb2+ on ASMs was carried out by batch experiments, Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the experimental isotherms, the adsorption equilibrium data were found to fit the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model, the Freundlich isotherm was more adequate than the Langmuir isotherm in simulating the adsorption isotherm of Cu2+,the adsorption of Cu2+, Pb2+ on ASMs was a spontaneous, the isosteric heat of adsorption at different adsorption levels was always negative and indicative of an exothermic process. The pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models were used to describe the kinetic data, and the rate constants were evaluated. The experimental data fitted well to the second-order kinetic model, which indicated that the chemical sorption was the rate-limiting step, instead of mass transfer.

The destruction of the surfactants, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBS) and dodecyl pyridinium chloride (DPC), using an advanced oxidation process is described. The use of zero valent iron (ZVI) and hydrogen peroxide at pH = 2.5 (the advanced Fenton process), with and without, the application of 20 kHz ultrasound leads to extensive mineralisation of both materials as determined by total organic carbon (TOC) measurements. For DBS, merely stirring with ZVI and H2O2 at 20°C leads to a 51% decrease in TOC, but using 20 kHz ultrasound at 40°C, maintaining the pH at 2.5 throughout and adding extra amounts of ZVI and H2O2 during the degradation, then the extent of mineralisation of DBS is substantially increased to 93%. A similar result is seen for DPC where virtually no degradation occurs at 20°C, but if extra amounts of both ZVI and hydrogen peroxide are introduced during the reaction at 40°C and the pH is maintained at 2.5, then an 87% mineralisation of DPC is obtained. The slow latent remediation of both surfactants and the mechanism of degradation are also discussed.
