Plastic litter from shotgun ammunition on Danish coastlines – Amounts and provenance
2018
Kanstrup, Niels | Balsby, Thorsten J.S.
Plastic litter in the marine environment is a major global issue. Discarded plastic shotgun ammunition shells and discharged wads are an unwelcome addition and feature among the top ten litter items found on reference beaches in Denmark. To understand this problem, its scale and origins, collections were made by volunteers along Danish coastal shorelines. In all 3669 plastic ammunition items were collected at 68 sites along 44.6 km of shoreline. The collected items were scored for characteristic variables such as gauge and length, shot type, and the legibility of text, the erosion, and the presence of metallic components. Scores for characteristics were related to the site, area, and season and possible influences discussed. The prevalence of collected plastic shotgun litter ranges from zero to 41 items per 100 m with an average of 3.7 items per 100 m. Most ammunition litter on Danish coasts originates from hunting on Danish coastal waterbodies, but a small amount may come from further afield. North Sea coasts are the most distinctive suggesting the possible contribution of long distance drift as well as the likelihood that such litter can persist in marine habitats for decades. The pathway from initial discard to eventual wash-up and collection depends on the physical properties of plastic components, marine tides and currents, coastal topography and shoreline vegetation.Judging from the disintegration of the cartridge and the wear and decomposition of components, we conclude that there is a substantial supply of polluting plastic ammunition materials that has and will accumulate. These plastic items pose a hazard to marine ecosystems and wash up on coasts for many years to come. We recommend that responsible managers, hunters and ammunition manufacturers will take action now to reduce the problem and, thereby, protect ecosystems, wildlife and the sustainability of hunting.

The main purpose of this study is to develop accurate equation for predicting methane emission into the environment during natural gas (NG) purging process. The process is carried out regularly in NG pressure reducing stations. For this purpose, a numerical investigation has been carried out to simulate NG exit flow from a purging valve during opening time. The simulation has been carried out using Ansys-Fluent code. To make the solution and results more similar to actual scenario, the valve is continuously opened in a transient turbulent flow. Initial condition, is assumed steady flow in the pipeline. Three-dimensional modeling is used to simulate the valve and connected pipe, and all of the effective parameters including, inlet pressure, pipeline diameter, valve diameter and purging process time (including the time which valve needs to get completely opened and also purging time) are investigated. For simplicity and also as the main component of NG is methane, methane is considered as working fluid (a real compressible gas). The numerical results show that discharging gas velocity is reached to a supersonic velocity at outlet section of valve. As the highest expected exit velocity is sonic velocity, the supersonic velocity is a surprised result. Looking at the streamlines show that this is due to a convergent-divergent nozzle occurrence (due to re-circulation zone near junction) in discharging pipe. Also results show that discharged mass flow rate has liner relation with pipeline pressure, second degree relation with valve diameter and has fourth-degree relation with valve to pipeline diameter ratio. To make the results more applicable for NG industry, two correlations have been developed for calculating the amount of released gas in steady state and unsteady state condition. Unsteady state correlation is valid for valve opening time and steady state correlation could be used while the valve is completely opened.

2018
Xue, Tao | Zhang, Qiang
Adverse effects of ambient fine particles (PM₂.₅) on sperm quality and oocyte fertilization have been identified by previous research. However, insufficient human studies tested associations between PM₂.₅ and decreased fertility rates. We associated long-term exposure to PM₂.₅ and county-level fertility rates reported by 2010 census across China. Exposure assessments were based on PM₂.₅ maps (2009–2010) with a spatial resolution of 0.1° derived from satellite remote sensing data from another published study. We used a Poisson regression to examine the relationship between PM₂.₅ and fertility rates with adjustment of potential confounders including county-level socioeconomic factors (e.g. sex ratio) and a spatially smoothed trend. We found that fertility rates were significantly decreased by 2.0% (95% confidence interval: 1.8%, 2.1%) per 10 μg/m³ increment of PM₂.₅. We also found a geographical variation of the associations. The study add to epidemiological evidences on adverse effects of PM₂.₅ on fertility rates.

Dioxin-induced toxicities that affect the development of the motor system have been proposed since many years. However, cellular evidence and the molecular basis for the effects are limited. In this study, a cultured mouse myoblast cell line, C2C12, was utilized to examine the effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on myogenic differentiation and expression of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a neuromuscular transmission-related gene. The results showed that TCDD exposure at 10⁻¹⁰ M repressed the myotube formation of C2C12 cells by disturbing the fusion process and suppressing the expression of myosin heavy chain, a myobute structural protein, and not by induction of cytotoxicity. Furthermore, TCDD dose dependently suppressed the transcriptional expression and enzymatic activity of AChE during the myogenic differentiation, particularly in the middle stage. However, the administration of aryl hydrocarbon receptor antagonists, CH223191 and alpha-naphthoflavone, did not completely reverse the TCDD-induced downregulation of muscular AChE during myogenic differentiation. These findings suggest that low dose exposure to dioxin may result in disturbances of muscle differentiation and neuromuscular transmission.

It is critical to estimate the exposure to indoor air pollution of residents spending most of their time in such microenvironments. However, the understanding regarding PM2.5 exposure in residential indoor environments is very limited. In this study, we collected participants' basic information and time–activity patterns, as well as details of other factors related to indoor air pollution exposure, through questionnaires presented to a large population in 37 counties of China. Continuous monitoring of ambient PM2.5 concentrations was performed using an environmental fixed-site monitoring network. Residential indoor PM2.5 concentrations were predicted using a mass balance model based on the data obtained. Evaluation of continuous daily average residential indoor PM2.5 exposure doses for large populations during winter revealed concentrations ranged from 67 to 195 μg/m3. Finally, differences in residential indoor PM2.5 exposure between northern and southern China were investigated. The results suggested that residential indoor PM2.5 concentrations in northern China, associated with heating, were higher than in the south. The established model could be important for improved understanding of human exposure to indoor PM2.5 air pollution.

Biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane was examined in packed quartz and soil column flow-through systems. The inhibitory effects of co-contaminants, specifically trichloroethene (TCE), 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE), and copper (Cu²⁺) ions, were investigated in the columns either with or without bioaugmentation with a 1,4-dioxane degrading bacterium Pseudonocardia dioxanivorans CB1190. Results indicate that CB1190 cells readily grew and colonized in the columns, leading to significant degradation of 1,4-dioxane under oxic conditions. Degradation of 1,4-dioxane was also observed in the native soil (without bioaugmentation), which had been previously subjected to enhanced reductive dechlorination treatment for co-contaminants TCE and 1,1-DCE. Bioaugmentation of the soil with CB1190 resulted in nearly complete degradation at influent concentrations of 3–10 mg L⁻¹ 1,4-dioxane and a residence reaction time of 40–80 h, but the presence of co-contaminants, 1,1-DCE and Cu²⁺ ions (up to 10 mg L⁻¹), partially inhibited 1,4-dioxane degradation in the untreated and bioaugmented soil columns. However, the inhibitory effects were much less severe in the column flow-through systems than those previously observed in planktonic cultures, which showed near complete inhibition at the same co-contaminant concentrations. These observations demonstrate a low susceptibility of soil microbes to the toxicity of 1,1-DCE and Cu²⁺ in packed soil flow-through systems, and thus have important implications for predicting biodegradation potential and developing sustainable, cost-effective technologies for in situ remediation of 1,4-dioxane contaminated soils and groundwater.

In the marine environment, most bivalve species base their reproduction on external fertilization. Hence, gametes and young stages face many threats, including exposure to plastic wastes which represent more than 80% of the debris in the oceans. Recently, evidence has been produced on the presence of nanoplastics in oceans, thus motivating new studies of their impacts on marine life. Because no information is available about their environmental concentrations, we performed dose-response exposure experiments with polystyrene particles to assess the extent of micro/nanoplastic toxicity. Effects of polystyrene with different sizes and functionalizations (plain 2-μm, 500-nm and 50-nm; COOH-50 nm and NH₂-50 nm) were assessed on three key reproductive steps (fertilization, embryogenesis and metamorphosis) of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Nanoplastics induced a significant decrease in fertilization success and in embryo-larval development with numerous malformations up to total developmental arrest. The NH₂-50 beads had the strongest toxicity to both gametes (EC₅₀ = 4.9 μg/mL) and embryos (EC₅₀ = 0.15 μg/mL), showing functionalization-dependent toxicity. No effects of plain microplastics were recorded. These results highlight that exposures to nanoplastics may have deleterious effects on planktonic stages of oysters, presumably interacting with biological membranes and causing cyto/genotoxicity with potentially drastic consequences for their reproductive success.

2018

Dicamba (DIC) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) are two of the most applied auxinic herbicides worldwide, both individually and as part of a mixture. However, the toxicity and interactions achieved when applied as a mixture have not yet been characterised. The equitoxic and non-equitoxic acute toxicity exerted by binary mixtures of Banvel® (57.71% DIC) and DMA® (58.4% 2,4-D) on the Neotropical fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were evaluated. Results revealed mean values of 1.02 (range, 0.96–1.08) for the toxic unit (TU) that induced 50% mortality (TU50 96 h) to the fish exposed to binary equitoxic mixtures of the commercial formulations Banvel®–DMA®. These results suggest that the mixture is nearly concentration additive. Furthermore, results demonstrated the occurrence of synergistic interaction when non-equitoxic combinations of Banvel®-or DMA®-formulated herbicides were assayed. In this context and regardless of their concentrations, either Banvel®- or DMA®-induced toxicity were synergised by the presence of the counterpart within mixtures. The present study represents the first evidence of the lethality exerted by mixtures of two auxinic herbicides—namely, DIC and 2,4-D—reported to date for fish and other biotic matrices. When C. decemmaculatus is used as the target organism, a synergistic pattern is observed following exposure to a mixture of both herbicides.

Anthropogenic activities are driving an increase in sediment contamination in coastal areas. This poses significant challenges for the management of estuarine ecosystems and their adjacent seas worldwide. However, few studies have been conducted on how dynamic mechanisms affect the sediment toxicity in the estuarine environment. This study was designed to investigate the linkages between sediment toxicity and hydrodynamics in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) area. High sediment toxicity was found in the Yangtze River mouth (Region I), the depocenter of the Yangtze River Delta (Region II), and the southeastern area of the adjacent sea (Region III), while low sediment toxicity was found in the northeastern offshore region (Region IV). A spatial comparison analysis and regression model indicated that the distributed pattern of sediment toxicity was likely related to hydrodynamics and circumfluence in the East China Sea (ECS) shelf. Specifically, high sediment toxicity in Region I may be affected by the Yangtze River Pump (YRP) and the low hydrodynamics there, and high toxicity in Region II can be influenced by the low sediment dynamics and fine sediment in the depocenter. The high sediment toxicity in Region III might be related to the combination of the YRP and Taiwan Warm Current, while the low toxicity in Region IV may be influenced by the local coarse-grained relict sand with strong sediment dynamics there. The present research results further suggest that it is necessary to link hydrodynamics and the spatial behavior of sediment and sediment-derived pollutants when assessing the pollution status of estuarine environments, especially for those mega-estuaries and their neighboring ocean environments with complex waves, tides and ocean currents.

Ibuprofen (IBU), as a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), is frequently prescribed by doctors to relieve pain. It is widely released into environmental water and soil in the form of chiral enantiomers by the urination and defecation of humans or animals and by sewage discharge from wastewater treatment plants. This study focused on the alteration of metabolism in the adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) brain after exposure to R-(-)-/S-(+)-/rac-IBU at 5 μg L−1 for 28 days. A total of 45 potential biomarkers and related pathways, including amino acids and their derivatives, purine and its derivatives, nucleotides and other metabolites, were observed with untargeted metabolomics. To validate the metabolic disorders induced by IBU, 22 amino acids and 3 antioxidant enzymes were selected to be quantitated and determined using targeted metabolomics and enzyme assay. Stereoselective changes were observed in the 45 identified biomarkers from the untargeted metabolomics analysis. The 22 amino acids quantitated in targeted metabolomics and 3 antioxidant enzymes determined in enzyme assay also showed stereoselective changes after R-(-)-/S-(+)-/rac-IBU exposure. Results showed that even at a low concentration of R-(-)-/S-(+)-/rac-IBU, disorders in metabolism and antioxidant defense systems were still induced with stereoselectivity. Our study may enable a better understanding of the risks of chiral PPCPs in aquatic organisms in the environment.
