Polychlorinated biphenyls and its potential role in endometriosis
2017
Yao, Mengyun | Hu, Tingting | Wang, Yinfeng | Du, Yongjiang | Hu, Changchang | Wu, Ruijin
With the progress of global industrialization and environmental deterioration, the relationship between human health and the living environment has become an increasing focus of attention. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, including dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls and non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls), as part of the organic chlorine contaminants, have been suspected as playing a role in the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis. Several population-based studies have proposed that exposure to PCBs may increase the risk of developing endometriosis, while some epidemiological studies have failed to find any association between PCBs and endometriosis. The purpose of this review is to discuss the potential pathophysiological relationship between endometriosis and PCBs with a focus on both dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls and non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls.

2017
Primost, Jezabel E. | Marino, Damián J.G. | Aparicio, Virginia C. | Costa, José Luis | Carriquiriborde, Pedro
In the Pampas, public concern has strongly risen because of the intensive use of glyphosate for weed control and fallow associated with biotech crops. The present study was aimed to evaluate the occurrence and concentration of the herbicide and its main metabolite (AMPA) in soil and other environmental compartments of the mentioned agroecosystem, including groundwater, in relation to real-world agricultural management practices in the region. Occurrence was almost ubiquitous in solid matrices (83–100%) with maximum concentrations among the higher reported in the world (soil: 8105 and 38939; sediment: 3294 and 7219; suspended particulate matter (SPM): 584 and 475 μg/kg of glyphosate and AMPA). Lower detection frequency was observed in surface water (27–55%) with maximum concentrations in whole water of 1.80 and 1.90 μg/L of glyphosate and AMPA, indicating that SPM analysis would be more sensitive for detection in the aquatic ecosystem. No detectable concentrations of glyphosate or AMPA were observed in groundwater. Glyphosate soil concentrations were better correlated with the total cumulative dose and total number of applications than the last spraying event dose, and an increment of 1 mg glyphosate/kg soil every 5 spraying events was estimated. Findings allow to infer that, under current practices, application rates are higher than dissipation rates. Hence, glyphosate and AMPA should be considered “pseudo-persistent” pollutants and a revisions of management procedures, monitoring programs, and ecological risk for soil and sediments should be also recommended.

2017
Zhu, Suling | Lian, Xiuyuan | Liu, Haixia | Hu, Jianming | Wang, Yuanyuan | Che, Jinxing
Air quality is closely related to quality of life. Air pollution forecasting plays a vital role in air pollution warnings and controlling. However, it is difficult to attain accurate forecasts for air pollution indexes because the original data are non-stationary and chaotic. The existing forecasting methods, such as multiple linear models, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and support vector regression (SVR), cannot fully capture the information from series of pollution indexes. Therefore, new effective techniques need to be proposed to forecast air pollution indexes. The main purpose of this research is to develop effective forecasting models for regional air quality indexes (AQI) to address the problems above and enhance forecasting accuracy. Therefore, two hybrid models (EMD-SVR-Hybrid and EMD-IMFs-Hybrid) are proposed to forecast AQI data. The main steps of the EMD-SVR-Hybrid model are as follows: the data preprocessing technique EMD (empirical mode decomposition) is utilized to sift the original AQI data to obtain one group of smoother IMFs (intrinsic mode functions) and a noise series, where the IMFs contain the important information (level, fluctuations and others) from the original AQI series. LS-SVR is applied to forecast the sum of the IMFs, and then, S-ARIMA (seasonal ARIMA) is employed to forecast the residual sequence of LS-SVR. In addition, EMD-IMFs-Hybrid first separately forecasts the IMFs via statistical models and sums the forecasting results of the IMFs as EMD-IMFs. Then, S-ARIMA is employed to forecast the residuals of EMD-IMFs. To certify the proposed hybrid model, AQI data from June 2014 to August 2015 collected from Xingtai in China are utilized as a test case to investigate the empirical research. In terms of some of the forecasting assessment measures, the AQI forecasting results of Xingtai show that the two proposed hybrid models are superior to ARIMA, SVR, GRNN, EMD-GRNN, Wavelet-GRNN and Wavelet-SVR. Therefore, the proposed hybrid models can be used as effective and simple tools for air pollution forecasting and warning as well as for management.

2017
Chen, Szu-Ying | Chan, Chang-Chuan | Su, Ta-Chen
This study examined effects of short-term urban air pollution exposures on inflammation, thrombosis, and autonomic imbalance in subjects at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We enrolled 61 patients with multiple CVD risk factors and measured high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), fibrinogen, D-dimer, and heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Two health examinations for each participant were performed during December 2002 through September 2003. Changes in inflammation and thrombotic markers and HRV indices with exposures to PM2.5, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) at 1- to 3-day lags were analyzed using mixed models. The results showed inflammatory and thrombotic markers increased with 1- to 3-day lagged PM2.5 components and gaseous pollutants exposures. hs-CRP maximally increased 0.19 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.07–0.31] and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.05–0.24) mg/L for an interquartile range (IQR) of 1-day lagged SO2 (2.3 ppb) and CO (0.5 ppm), respectively. D-dimer maximally increased 1.05 (95% CI: 0.13–1.75), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.09–1.21), 0.92 (95% CI: 0.13–1.50), and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.07–1.61) mg/dL for an IQR of 1-day lagged OC (3.9 μg/m3), EC (2.0 μg/m3), SO2, and NO2 (13.4 ppb), respectively. The HRV indices, including low frequency, very low frequency, and the ratio of low frequency to high frequency decreased 19.8 (95% CI: 4.4–32.7), 12.9 (95% CI: 0.8–23.4), and 17.6 (95% CI: 5.4–28.2)% for an IQR of 1-day lagged PM2.5 (20.2 μg/m3), respectively. Our findings demonstrated PM2.5 components and gaseous pollutants exert prolonged inflammatory and thrombotic reactions, while PM2.5 exert an immediate autonomic imbalance.

Cold weather was estimated to account for more than half of weather-related deaths in the U.S. during 2006–2010. Studies have shown that cold-related excessive mortality is especially relevant with decreasing latitude or in regions with mild winter. However, only limited studies have been conducted in the southern U.S. The purpose of our study is to examine impacts of cold weather on mortality in 12 major Texas Metropolitan Areas (MSAs) for the 22-year period, 1990–2011. Our study used a two-stage approach to examine the cold-mortality association. We first applied distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) to 12 major MSAs to estimate cold effects for each area. A random effects meta-analysis was then used to estimate pooled effects. Age-stratified and cause-specific mortalities were modeled separately for each MSA. Most of the MSAs were associated with an increased risk in mortality ranging from 0.1% to 5.0% with a 1 °C decrease in temperature below the cold thresholds. Higher increased mortality risks were generally observed in MSAs with higher average daily mean temperatures and lower latitudes. Pooled effect estimate was 1.58% (95% Confidence Interval (CI) [0.81, 2.37]) increase in all-cause mortality risk with a 1 °C decrease in temperature. Cold wave effects in Texas were also examined, and several MSAs along the Texas Gulf Coast showed statistically significant cold wave-mortality associations. Effects of cold on all-cause mortality were highest among people over 75 years old (1.86%, 95% CI [1.09, 2.63]). Pooled estimates for cause-specific mortality were strongest in myocardial infarction (4.30%, 95% CI [1.18, 7.51]), followed by respiratory diseases (3.17%, 95% CI [0.26, 6.17]) and ischemic heart diseases (2.54%, 95% CI [1.08, 4.02]). In conclusion, cold weather generally increases mortality risk significantly in Texas, and the cold effects vary with MSAs, age groups, and cause-specific deaths.

In recent years, an increasing trend towards investigating and monitoring the contamination of the environment by microplastics (MP) (plastic pieces < 5 mm) has been observed worldwide. Nonetheless, a reliable methodology that would facilitate and automate the monitoring of MP is still lacking. With the goal of selecting practical and standardized methods, and considering the challenges in microplastics detection, we present here a critical evaluation of two vibrational spectroscopies, Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and two extraction methods: thermal extraction desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TED-GC-MS) and liquid extraction with subsequent size exclusion chromatography (SEC) using a soil with known contents of PE, PP, PS and PET as reference material. The obtained results were compared in terms of measurement time, technique handling, detection limits and requirements for sample preparation. The results showed that in designing and selecting the right methodology, the scientific question that determines what needs to be understood is significant, and should be considered carefully prior to analysis. Depending on whether the object of interest is quantification of the MP particles in the sample, or merely a quick estimate of sample contamination with plastics, the appropriate method must be selected. To obtain overall information about MP in environmental samples, the combination of several parallel approaches should be considered.

2017
Grova, N. | Faÿs, F. | Hardy, E.M. | Appenzeller, B.M.R.
A gas chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry method dedicated to the analysis of 50 metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) was applied to urine specimens collected from female Long Evans rats under controlled exposure to a mixture of PAHs (at 7 doses ranging from 0.01 to 0.8 mg/kg, by gavage, 3 times per week for 90 days). On four occasions (day 1, 28, 60 and 90), urine samples were collected over a 24 h period. Among these 50 OH-PAHs, 41 were detected in urine samples. Seven additional OH-PAHs were identified for the first time: 1 corresponding to metabolite of pyrene and 3 of anthracene.Strong linear dose versus urinary concentration relationships were observed for 25 of the 41 OH-PAHs detected in rat urine, confirming their suitability for assessing exposure to their respective parent compound. In addition, some isomers (e.g. 1-OH-pyrene, 3-OH-/4-OH-chrysene, 10-OH-benz[a]anthracene, 8-OH-benzo[k]fluoranthene, 11-OH-benzo[b]fluoranthene and 3-OH-benzo[a]pyrene) that were detected starting from the lowest levels of exposure or even in controls were considered particularly relevant biomarkers compared to metabolites only detected at higher levels of exposure. Finally, on the basis of the excretion profiles (on days 1, 28, 60 and 90) and urinary elimination kinetics of each OH-PAH detected at days 1 and 60, this study highlighted the fact that sampling time may influence the measurement of metabolites in urine.Taken together, these results provide interesting information on the suitability of the analysis of OH-PAHs in urine for the assessment of PAH exposure, which could be taken into consideration for the design of epidemiological studies in the future.

Air pollution plays a pivotal role in the deterioration of many materials used in buildings and cultural monuments causing an inestimable damage. This study aims to estimate the impacts of air pollution (SO2, HNO3, O3, PM10) and meteorological conditions (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity) on limestone, copper and bronze based on high resolution air quality data-base produced with AMS-MINNI modelling system over the Italian territory over the time period 2003–2010. A comparison between high resolution data (AMS-MINNI grid, 4 × 4 km) and low resolution data (EMEP grid, 50 × 50 km) has been performed. Our results pointed out that the corrosion levels for limestone, copper and bronze are decreased in Italy from 2003 to 2010 in relation to decrease of pollutant concentrations. However, some problem related to air pollution persists especially in Northern and Southern Italy. In particular, PM10 and HNO3 are considered the main responsible for limestone corrosion. Moreover, the high resolution data (AMS-MINNI) allowed the identification of risk areas that are not visible with the low resolution data (EMEP modelling system) in all considered years and, especially, in the limestone case. Consequently, high resolution air quality simulations are suitable to provide concrete benefits in providing information for national effective policy against corrosion risk for cultural heritage, also in the context of climate changes that are affecting strongly Mediterranean basin.

As an emerging contaminant, 1-H-benzotriazole (1H-BTR) has been detected in the engineered and natural aquatic environments, which usually coexists with heavy metals and causes combined pollution. In the present study, wild-type and transgenic zebrafish Danio rerio were used to explore the acute toxicity as well as the single and joint hepatotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) and 1H-BTR. Although the acute toxicity of 1H-BTR to zebrafish was low, increased expression of liver-specific fatty acid binding protein was observed in transgenic zebrafish when the embryos were exposed to 5.0 μM of 1H-BTR for 30 days. Besides, co-exposure to 1H-BTR not only reduced the acute toxic effects induced by Cd, but also alleviated the Cd-induced liver atrophy in transgenic fish. Correspondingly, effects of combined exposure to 1H-BTR on the Cd-induced expressions of several signal pathway-related genes and superoxide dismutase and glutathione-s-transferase proteins were studied. Based on the determination of Cd bioaccumulation in fish and the complexing stability constant (β) of Cd-BTR complex in solution, the detoxification mechanism of co-existing 1H-BTR on Cd to the zebrafish was discussed.

In this study, the phototoxicity of cadmium sulfide (CdS), molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanoparticles (NPs) toward Escherichia coli (E. coli) under UV irradiation (365 nm) was investigated. At the same mass concentration of NPs, the toxicity of three NPs decreased in the order of CdS > MoS2 > WS2. For example, the death rates of E. coli exposed to 50 mg/L CdS, MoS2, and WS2 were 96.7%, 38.5%, and 31.2%, respectively. Transmission electron microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope images of E. coli exposed to three NPs showed the damage of cell walls and release of intracellular components. The CdS-treated cell wall was more extensively damaged than those of MoS2-treated and WS2-treated bacteria. WS2 and MoS2 generated superoxide radical (O2⁻), singlet oxygen (¹O2), and hydroxyl radical under UV irradiation, CdS produced only O2⁻ and ¹O2. CdS and WS2 released ions under UV irradiation, while MoS2 did not. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and toxic ion release jointly resulted in the antibacterial activities of CdS and WS2. ROS generation was the dominant toxic mechanism of MoS2 toward the bacteria. This study highlighted the importance of considering the hazardous effect of sulfide NPs after their release into natural waters under light irradiation condition.
