Effects of ambient temperature on myocardial infarction: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2018
Sun, Zhiying | Chen, Chen | Xu, Dandan | Li, Tiantian
Previous studies have suggested that ambient temperature is associated with the mortality and morbidity of myocardial infarction (MI) although consistency among these investigations is lacking. We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between ambient temperature and MI. The PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched back to August 31, 2017. The pooled estimates for different temperature exposures were calculated using a random-effects model. The Cochran's Q test and coefficient of inconsistency (I2) were used to evaluate heterogeneity, and the Egger's test was used to assess publication bias. The exposure-response relationship of temperature-MI mortality or hospitalization was modeled using random-effects meta-regression. A total of 30 papers were included in the review, and 23 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled estimates for the relationship between temperature and the relative risk of MI hospitalization was 1.016 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.004–1.028) for a 1 °C increase and 1.014 (95% CI: 1.004–1.024) for a 1 °C decrease. The pooled estimate of MI mortality was 1.639 (95% CI: 1.087–2.470) for a heat wave. The heterogeneity was significant for heat exposure, cold exposure, and heat wave exposure. The Egger's test revealed potential publication bias for cold exposure and heat exposure, whereas there was no publication bias for heat wave exposure. An increase in latitude was associated with a decreased risk of MI hospitalization due to cold exposure. The association of heat exposure and heat wave were immediate, and the association of cold exposure were delayed. Consequently, cold exposure, heat exposure, and exposure to heat waves were associated with an increased risk of MI. Further research studies are required to understand the relationship between temperature and MI in different climate areas and extreme weather conditions.

2018
Yang, Yonggang | Guo, Tingting | Jiao, Wentao
There is less research on the hydrological system and its destruction processes mechanism in the mining areas, especially combined application of isotope technology and chemical signals, which is a key scientific problem that need to be solved. This study takes Jinci spring area in Shanxi as a case study. It is based on the data of hydrology and mining condition from 1954 to 2015, combining monitoring experiments, O18, D, S34 and N15 tracing, chemical and model simulation. This study investigates the hydrological regularity and impacts of mining activities on water quantity and quality, and reveals the destruction process of hydrological system. The results show that: (1) Water chemical type shows an evolutionary trend of HCO3−-Ca2+-Mg2+→SO42--HCO3--Ca2+-Mg2+→SO42--Ca2+-Mg2+, due to the influence of exploitation and fault zones. Isotope tracer shows that mine pit water is formed by a mixture of pore water, karst water and surface water. (2) Although precipitation and seepage have a certain impact on the reducing of groundwater quantity, over-exploitation of water resource is still the main reason for reducing of groundwater quantity. Under the conditions of keeping the exploitation intensity at the current level or reducing it by 10%, groundwater level shows a declining trend. Under the condition of reducing it by 30%, groundwater level starts to rise up. When reducing by 50%, groundwater level reaches its highest point. Coalmining changes the runoff, recharge and discharge paths. (3) From 1985 to 2015, Water quality in the mining area is worsening. Ca2+ increases by 35.30%, SO42− increases by 52.80%, and TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) increases by 67.50%. Nitrates come from the industrial and domestic wastewater, which is generated by mining. The percentage of groundwater coming from gypsum dissolusion is 67.51%, and the percentage from coal measure strata water is 34.49%. The water qualities of river branches are generally deteriorated.

The long-term associations between multiple metals and incident diabetes are uncertain. We aimed to examine the relationship between plasma concentrations of 23 metals and the incidence of type 2 diabetes among Chinese senior adults. We quantified fasting plasma concentrations of 23 metals by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry among 1039 incident diabetes cases and 1039 controls (age and sex matched) nested in a prospective study, the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort. Both cases and controls were free of diabetes at baseline (2008–2010), incident diabetes were identified using the following criteria: fasting glucose ≥ 7.0 mmoL/l; or hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5%; or self-reported physician diagnosis of diabetes or use of anti-diabetic medication during the follow-up visits in 2013. In the conditional logistic regression models, the multivariable adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of diabetes across quartiles (Q1–Q4) of metal concentrations were as follows: titanium, 1.00, 0.92, 1.31, 1.38 (1.00–1.91, Ptrend = 0.011); selenium, 1.00, 1.08, 1.45, 1.27 (0.93–1.74, Ptrend = 0.05); and antimony, 1.00, 0.79, 0.77, 0.60 (0.44–0.83, Ptrend = 0.002). Arsenic was significantly associated with diabetes in the crude model (ORs comparing extreme quartiles 1.30; 1.02–1.65; Ptrend = 0.006), but was not significant after adjustment for socio-demographic factors. No significant associations were found for other metals. In conclusion, titanium and selenium were positively while antimony was negatively associated with incident diabetes.

Acrylonitrile is a colorless volatile liquid mostly present in tobacco smoke. Acrylonitrile exposure has shown to increase oxidative stress in animal studies; however, there was no previous research in human epidemiology. In this study, 853 subjects were recruited from a cohort of Taiwanese adolescents and young adults to investigate the association between urinary concentrations of the acrylonitrile metabolite N-acetyl-S-(2-cyanoethyl)-L-cysteine (CEMA), the oxidative stress product 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. The geometric mean (SD) of CEMA and 8-OHdG concentrations were 4.67 (8.61) μg/L and 2.97 (2.14) μg/L, respectively. 10% elevated in CEMA (μg/L) was positively correlated with the change of 8-OHdG levels (μg/L) (β = 0.325, SE = 0.105, P = 0.002) in multiple linear regression analyses. The urinary CEMA was not related to other CVD risk factors. In subpopulation analyses, the association between CEMA and 8-OHdG was evident in all genders, adolescents, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance score ≥0.89, and environmental tobacco smokers. In this study, we observed that higher levels of CEMA levels were correlated with increased levels of 8-OHdG in this cohort. Future research on exposure to acrylonitrile and oxidative stress was warranted.

Knowledge of environmental risk factors for stroke and their role are limited. We performed a case-cohort study to evaluate the association between serum persistent organic pollutants (POPs) level and stroke risk.526 subcohort members and 111 stroke incidence cases were identified from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II. Serum levels of POPs were measured using gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry. The hazard ratios (HRs) for stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic, and all stroke types) were estimated using the weighted Cox regression model. Age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, physical activity, family history of cardiovascular disease, and hypertension were adjusted in the weighted Cox regression model. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, increased risk for stroke was observed among participants with serum concentration of p,p'-DDE in the highest tertile compared to those in the lowest tertile (HR = 4.10, 95% CI: 1.58, 10.59). A similar association was estimated for PCB118 (HR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.04, 5.22), PCB156 (HR = 3.42, 95% CI: 1.42, 8.23), and PCB138 (HR = 3.80, 95% CI: 1.48, 9.76). For TEQ, stroke was three times as likely to occur among subjects with TEQ in the highest tertile compared to those in the lowest tertile (HR = 3.12, 95% CI: 1.27, 7.65). PCBs were positively associated with ischemic stroke, but not with hemorrhagic stroke.Elevated serum POPs levels were associated with an increased risk of stroke, especially ischemic stroke.

2018
Shi, Kaixiang | Wang, Qian | Fan, Xia | Wang, Gejiao
A heterotrophic arsenite [As(III)]-oxidizing bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens GW4 isolated from As(III)-rich groundwater sediment showed high As(III) resistance and could oxidize As(III) to As(V). The As(III) oxidation could generate energy and enhance growth, and AioR was the regulator for As(III) oxidase. To determine the related metabolic pathways mediated by As(III) oxidation and whether AioR regulated other cellular responses to As(III), isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) was performed in four treatments, GW4 (+AsIII)/GW4 (-AsIII), GW4-ΔaioR (+AsIII)/GW4-ΔaioR (-AsIII), GW4-ΔaioR (-AsIII)/GW4 (-AsIII) and GW4-ΔaioR (+AsIII)/GW4 (+AsIII). A total of 41, 71, 82 and 168 differentially expressed proteins were identified, respectively. Using electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and qRT-PCR, 12 genes/operons were found to interact with AioR. These results indicate that As(III) oxidation alters several cellular processes related to arsenite, such as As resistance (ars operon), phosphate (Pi) metabolism (pst/pho system), TCA cycle, cell wall/membrane, amino acid metabolism and motility/chemotaxis. In the wild type with As(III), TCA cycle flow is perturbed, and As(III) oxidation and fermentation are the main energy resources. However, when strain GW4-ΔaioR lost the ability of As(III) oxidation, the TCA cycle is the main way to generate energy. A regulatory cellular network controlled by AioR is constructed and shows that AioR is the main regulator for As(III) oxidation, besides, several other functions related to As(III) are regulated by AioR in parallel.

Wijesiri, Buddhi | Deilami, Kaveh | Goonetilleke, Ashantha
Changes in land use have a direct impact on receiving water quality. Effective mitigation strategies require the accurate prediction of water quality in order to enhance community well-being and ecosystem health. The research study employed Bayesian Network modelling to investigate the validity of using cross-sectional and longitudinal data on water quality and land use for predicting water quality in a mixed use catchment and the role it plays in the generation of blue-green algae in the receiving marine environment. Bayesian Network modelling showed that cross-sectional and longitudinal data analyses generate contrasting information about the influence of different land uses on surface water pollution. The modelling outcomes highlighted the lack of reliability in cross-sectional data analysis, based on the indication of spurious relationships between water quality and land use. On the other hand, the longitudinal data analysis, which accounted for changes in water quality and land use over a ten-year period, informed how catchment water quality varies in response to temporal changes in land use. The longitudinal data analysis further revealed that the types of anthropogenic activities have a more significant influence on pollutant generation than the change in the area extent of different land uses over time. Therefore, the careful interpretation of the findings derived solely from cross-sectional data analysis is important in the design of long-term strategies for pollution mitigation.

2018

Microplastics (MPs) have adverse effects on aquatic organisms in marine environments; however, there is a lack of information on freshwater environments. This study investigated the dietary uptake, and biodistribution and depuration of MPs in the freshwater diving beetle Cybister japonicus (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) after consumption of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to MPs. The transfer of MPs in diving beetles after consumption of zebrafish was assessed to determine whether the presence of MPs affected diving beetle behavior and predation. We found that diving beetles that consumed MP-exposed fish had a significantly lower ingestion rate than the control. In addition, the trophic transfer rate of MPs was 13–18%. However, MPs were found only in the crop and proventriculus of the beetles, and all particles were depurated within 48 h, likely via regurgitation. As diving beetle is a top predator in freshwater ecosystems and could facilitate transfer from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems via predation, its behavior towards indigestible MPs in its digestive organs (i.e., filtering and vomiting) could represent a meaningful phenomenon as a potential vector for MP transport. This is the first report of the trophic transfer of MPs from fish to dytiscid species, which helps clarify the effects and mechanisms of MPs in freshwater systems.

Mariculture sediment has been recognized as a major contributor of environmental antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which are challenging the treatment of infections worldwide. Both antibiotics and fishmeal are used in aquaculture, and each has the potential to facilitate ARG dissemination, however their combined impact on the sediment resistome and their relative contribution remain unclear. In this study, microcosms were exposed to varying concentrations of tetracycline with or without fishmeal (0.1% wt/wt) for 14 days. Sediment genomic DNA was analyzed using high throughput quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to compare the contribution of fishmeal and tetracycline to antibiotic resistomes and bacterial communities in mariculture sediment. Sixty-seven ARGs were detected potentially correlating to resistance for several major antibiotics. Fishmeal, but not the dose of tetracycline, contributed to the significant increase of both ARG abundance and diversity in the sediment. Based on principle coordinate analysis and hierarchical clustering, ARGs were clustered into two groups depending on whether fishmeal was added. Aminoglycoside, macrolide–lincosamide–streptogramin b (MLSb) and tetracycline resistance genes were the most abundant when fishmeal was used, while a significant increase in mobile genetic element (MGE) abundance was also detected (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, bacterial community structures were detected with distinct patterns between the two groups (Adonis, P < 0.05). Using the Mantel test and partial least squares path modeling, we identified that sediment resistomes were significantly correlated with microbial community structures (P < 0.05) which were mainly driven by nutrients in fishmeal. Together our findings suggested that fishmeal plays a more important role than tetracycline in proliferation of ARGs in mariculture sediment. This study may provide new insights into the mitigation of ARG propagation in mariculture operations.

Melamine and phthalate, mainly di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are ubiquitously present in the general environment. We investigated whether urine melamine levels can modify the relationship between DEHP exposure and markers of early renal damage in children. A nationwide health survey for Children aged ≤12 years possibly exposed to phthalates were enrolled between August 2012 and January 2013. They were administered questionnaires to collect details regarding past DEHP exposure to phthalate-tainted foodstuffs. Urine samples were measured melamine levels, phthalate metabolites and biomarkers of renal damage, including urine microalbumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase (NAG), and β2-microglobulin. The study included 224 children who had a median urine melamine level (μg/mmol creatinine) of 1.61 ranging 0.18–47.42. Positive correlations were found between urine melamine levels and urine ACR as well as urine NAG levels (both Spearman correlation coefficients r = 0.24, n = 224, p < .001). The higher the past DEHP exposure or urine melamine levels, the higher the prevalence of microalbuminuria. An interaction effect was also found between urine melamine levels and past DEHP exposure on urine ACR. Melamine levels may further modify the effect of past DEHP exposure on urine ACR in children.
