Rare earth elements (REEs) are widely used in optoelectronic industries, and they can be emitted into the environment and may induce biological effects. In this study, we investigated the provenance and bioaccessibility of REEs in atmospheric particles (APs) collected from areas impacted by the optoelectronic industry. The geoaccumulation index (Igₑₒ) values showed that Y, Eu, and Tb were much more enriched in the APs from the optoelectronic recycling sites than in those from the optoelectronic producing sites and were not enriched in the APs from the optoelectronic administrative sites and background sites. The characteristic parameters and the distribution patterns of REEs demonstrated that the AP samples from the recycling sites and producing sites showed remarkably positive Eu and Tb anomalies. According to the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, the optoelectronic industry was quantitatively determined to contribute 82.8% of Y, 86.5% of Eu, and 83.4% of Tb. Furthermore, an in vitro physiologically based extraction test (PBET) was performed to assess the bioaccessibility of REEs in the APs. The results showed that the bioaccessibility of all the REEs in the APs was below 50.0% in the human gastrointestinal tract, with higher values in the gastric phases than in the intestinal phases. In particular, extremely low gastric bioaccessibilities of Tb and Ce and relatively high gastric bioaccessibilities of Y and Eu were observed in the APs from the recycling sites and producing sites, which may due to the chemical composition of the compounds containing REEs that are used in the optoelectronic industry. In conclusion, our results provide additional information about the contribution and influence of the optoelectronic industry on the provenance and bioaccessibility of REEs in APs.

Microplastic pollution is widespread across most ocean basins around the world. Microplastics (MPs) are small plastic particles that have a significant impact on the marine environment. Various research on plastic pollution have been conducted in several regions. However, currently, there is limited data on the distribution and concentration of MPs in the mid-west Pacific Ocean. Therefore, this study we investigated the abundance, distribution, characteristics, and compositions of MPs in this region. Sea surface water samples collected from 18 stations showed a microplastic concentration range of 6028–95,335 pieces/km² and a mean concentration of 34,039 ± 25,101 pieces/km². Highest microplastic concentrations were observed in the seamount region of western Pacific. We observed a significant positive correlation between microplastic abundance and latitude across the study region. It was observed that microplastic concentrations decreased with increasing offshore distance at sites located on a 154° W transect. Fibres/filaments were the dominant microparticles observed in this study (57.4%), followed by fragments (18.3%). The dominant particle size range was 1–2.5 mm (35.1%), followed by 0.5–1 mm (28.5%), and the dominant particle colour was white (33.8%), followed by transparent (31.0%) and green (24.6%). The most common polymer identified by μ-Raman was polypropylene (39.1%), followed by polymethyl methacrylate (16.2%), polyethylene (14.1%) and polyethylene terephthalate (14.2%). The possible sources and pathways of microplastics in the study area were proposed based on the morphological and compositional characteristics of particles, their spatial distribution patterns, and shipboard current profiling (ADCP). Our study contributes to the further understanding of MPs in remote ocean areas.

Phytoremediation coupled with agro-production is considered a sustainable strategy for remediation of trace element contaminated fields without interrupting crop production. In this study hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii was intercropped with a leguminous plant fava bean (Vicia fava) in cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) co-contaminated field to evaluate the effects of intercropping on growth performance and accumulations of trace elements in plants with plant growth promoting endophyte (PGPE) consortium application. The results showed, compared with monoculture, intercropping coupled with inoculation application promoted biomass as well as Cd and Pb concentrations in individual parts of both plants, thus increasing the removal efficiencies of trace elements (4.49-folds for Cd and 5.41-folds for Pb). Meanwhile, this superposition biofortification measure maintained normal yield and nutrient content, and limited the concentration of Cd and Pb within the permissible limit (<0.2 mg kg⁻¹ FW) in fava bean during the grain production. These results demonstrated a feasible technical system for phytoremediation coupled with agro-production in slightly or moderately Cd and Pb co-contaminated field, and also provided useful information for further investigation of interaction mechanisms between intercropping and PGPEs inoculation.

Amaranth (Amaranthus mangostanus L.) has superior capability for accumulating cadmium (Cd) and has the potential to be used for phytoremediation of Cd contaminated soils. Iron (Fe) is chemically similar to Cd and may mediate Cd-induced physiological or metabolic impacts in plants. The purpose was to investigate the model of time-dependent and concentration-dependent kinetics of Cd absorption under Fe deficiency, understanding the physiological mechanism of Cd absorption in amaranth roots. The kinetic characteristics of Cd uptake by amaranth grown in Cd enriched nutritional solution with or without Fe addition and with methanol-chloroform, carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), and lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) were compared using 109Cd2+ isotope labeling technique. The results showed that Cd uptake was time-dependent and about 90–93% of uptake occurred during the first 150 min. The kinetics of Cd uptake showed that two stages were involved. The saturation stage fitted the Michaelis-Menten model when concentrations of Cd were lower than 12.71 μmol/L and then the absorption of Cd by roots was increased linearly during the second stage. Only linear absorption was observed with methanol-chloroform treatment while the metabolic inhibitor CCCP inhibited only the saturation absorption process, and the Ca channel inhibitor LaCl3 partially inhibited the two stages of absorption. These results indicated that the root absorption of 109Cd2+ was enhanced under Fe deficiency which induced more Fe transporters in the root cell membrane, and the Ca channel, apoplastic and symplastic pathways enhanced the Cd absorption in roots.

The current study was conducted to (1) examine seasonal and spatial distribution of heavy metals and metalloid in sediment from the Saigon River and (2) apportion and quantify their pollution sources. Ninety-six sediment samples were taken in the rainy and dry season on 13 sampling sites, distributed over the lower reaches of the River, to analyze for exchangeable concentration of 11 heavy metals and metalloid (Al, B, Cd, Co, Fe, In, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn), pH, EC, organic carbon content, and particle-size distribution. Generally, the concentration of 11 elements was ranked in the order Mn > Al > Fe > Zn > Sr > In > B > Ni > Co > Pb > Cd. Hierarchical cluster analysis grouped 13 sampling sites into two parts based on the similar concentration of the 11 elements. Three-way analysis of variance showed that the total exchangeable concentration of 11 elements was significantly higher in the rainy season than in the dry season and in the upper part than in the lower part of the river. Principal component analysis/factor analysis and correlation analysis revealed that three pollution sources (PS) may contribute to enriching the 11 examined elements in the sediment. These sources included (PS1) from catchment through water erosion over natural areas, explaining 83%, (PS2) mixed sources from catchment through water erosion over agricultural fields and inside Ho Chi Minh City, accounting for 6%, and (PS3) mixed sources from lowland areas, explaining 7.8% of the total variance of the elements. In brief, the sediment concentration of 11 metals and metalloid varied with season and space and three major pollution sources from river catchment, inside Ho Chi Minh City, and lowland contributively enriched the elements in the sediment of the River.

Environmental distribution and concentration of tetrabromobisphenol A bis- (2-hydroxyethyl) ether (TBBPA-DHEE) and tetrabromobisphenol A mono- (hydroxyethyl) ether (TBBPA-MHEE), are obscure due to the lack of available analytical methods. Here two novel immunoassays were established to systematically investigate their distributions in Taizhou, Eastern China. Five monoclonal antibodies against pollutants were generated with two designed haptens through animal immunization. After matched with different coating antigens/antibodies, ELISAs were established (LOD for TBBPA-DHEE, 0.12 ng/mL, based on OVA-M3/mAb-D4G6; LOD for TBBPA-MHEE, 0.79 ng/mL, based on OVA-M3/mAb-D2G6) and applied for investigation of their occurrences at a typical e-waste recycling area after 2-year samples collection, where the total 33 water, 32 soil and 16 biological samples were collected with the highest concentrations of 3.46 ng/mL, 2.76 ng/g (dry weight, dw) and 5.01 ng/g (dw), respectively. Meanwhile, our study also indicated that at the centralizing e-waste recycling sites the serious pollution for both chemicals still existed despite of various efforts. Besides, obvious improvements were observed at an abandoned e-waste recycling region treated and remedied for many years by the local Chinese government. These findings highlight the importance of policy decisions in treatment of pollutants to reduce organic pollutant-related health risks.

This study forms the first basic assessment of microphytobenthos (MPB) dynamics in micro-estuaries and micro-outlets in southern Africa. It examines MPB community responses to environmental variables and further investigates MPB composition qualitatively across different micro-estuaries and micro-outlets over four seasons in a warm temperate region of the subcontinent. Combinations of multivariate analyses were used to explore similarities and differences in MPB communities between systems. Human-induced catchment changes between microsystems ranged from no alteration (rating 0; mostly micro-outlets) to extreme modification (rating 5; mostly micro-estuaries). Two hundred and sixty-seven MPB taxa were identified within all the microsystems, with 247 and 230 MPB taxa being observed in the micro-estuaries and micro-outlets, respectively. The MPB communities differed slightly in terms of microsystem types and seasons, but no significant differences were observed. Multivariate analyses (i.e. Boosted Regression Trees, Canonical Correspondence Analysis) showed that water column variables were significant and important in structuring MPB communities, with soluble reactive phosphorus, sediment pH, turbidity, ammonium and temperature being documented as key drivers. The MPB community composition clearly reflected the influence of catchment anthropogenic activities on species composition and structure. Moderately modified catchments resulted in MPB community structure variation among water bodies in relationship to land use and salinity gradients. The study found that; (i) by virtue of their size, microsystems and their catchments are likely to be particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures when compared to systems of larger size; (ii) a typical impacted state may reflect reduced environmental heterogeneity which, compared to larger systems, may be achieved over much shorter time periods (following a particular event) or under much less intensive impacts; and (iii) the response in terms of MPB structure may predictably reflect a concomitant change from a complex community dynamic (structure and spatio-temporal attributes) to one that approaches a homogeneous structure (poor spatial zonation, strong taxonomic dominance, low species diversity).

2,6-Dichloro-4-nitrophenol (2,6-DCNP) is an emerging chlorinated nitroaromatic pollutant, and its fate in the environment is an important question. However, microorganisms with the ability to utilize 2,6-DCNP have not been reported. In this study, Cupriavidus sp. CNP-8 having been previously reported to degrade various halogenated nitrophenols, was verified to be also capable of degrading 2,6-DCNP. Biodegradation kinetics assay showed that it degraded 2,6-DCNP with the specific growth rate of 0.124 h⁻¹, half saturation constant of 0.038 mM and inhibition constant of 0.42 mM. Real-time quantitative PCR analyses indicated that the hnp gene cluster was involved in the catabolism of 2,6-DCNP. The hnpA and hnpB gene products were purified to homogeneity by Ni-NTA chromatography. Enzymatic assays showed that HnpAB, a FAD-dependent two-component monooxygenase, converted 2,6-DCNP to 6-chlorohydroxyquinol with a Kₘ of 3.9 ± 1.4 μM and a kcₐₜ/Kₘ of 0.12 ± 0.04 μΜ⁻¹ min⁻¹. As the oxygenase component encoding gene, hnpA is necessary for CNP-8 to grow on 2,6-DCNP by gene knockout and complementation. The phylogenetic analysis showed that the hnp cluster originated from the cluster involved in the catabolism of chlorophenols rather than nitrophenols. To our knowledge, CNP-8 is the first bacterium with the ability to utilize 2,6-DCNP, and this study fills a gap in the microbial degradation mechanism of this pollutant at the molecular, biochemical and genetic levels. Moreover, strain CNP-8 could degrade three chlorinated nitrophenols rapidly from the synthetic wastewater, indicating its potential in the bioremediation of chlorinated nitrophenols polluted environments.
