In many water-scarce countries, waste water is used for irrigation which poses a health risk to farmers and consumers. At the same time, it delivers nutrients to the farming systems. In this study, we tested the hypotheses that biochar can be used as a filter medium for waste water treatment to reduce pathogen loads. At the same time, the biochar is becoming enriched with nutrients and therefore can act as a fertilizer for soil amendment. We used biochar as a filter medium for the filtration of raw waste water and compared the agronomic effects of this “filterchar” (FC) and the untreated biochar (BC) in a greenhouse pot trial on spring wheat biomass production on an acidic sandy soil from Niger. The biochar filter showed the same removal of pathogens as a common sand filter (1.4 log units on average). We did not observe a nutrient accumulation in FC compared to untreated BC. Instead, P, Mg and K were reduced during filtration while N content remained unchanged. Nevertheless, higher biomass (Triticum L. Spp.) production in BC (+72%) and FC (+37%) treatments (20 t ha⁻¹), compared with the unamended control, were found. There were no significant differences in aboveground biomass production between BC and FC. Soil available P content was increased by BC (+106%) and FC (+52%) application. Besides, mineral nitrogen content was reduced in BC treated soil and to a lesser extent when FC was used. This may be explained by reduced sorption affinity for mineral nitrogen compounds on FC surfaces. Although the nutrients provided by FC decreased, due to leaching in the filter, it still yielded higher biomass than the unamended control.

Polar regions are fragile ecosystems threatened by both long-range pollution and local human contamination. In this context, the environmental distribution of the Personal Care Products (PCPs) represent a major knowledge gap. Following preliminary Antarctic studies, Fragrance Materials (FMs) were analyzed in the seawater and snow collected in the area of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, to investigate local and long-range contamination. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), including Retene, were determined in parallel to help the identification of the governing processes. Concentrations of FMs up to 72 ng L⁻¹ were detected in the surface snow near the settlement and at increasing distances, in relation to the prevailing winds. PAHs follow a similar scheme, with levels of Retene up to 1.8 μg L⁻¹, likely deriving from the occurrence of this compound in the coal dust due to the previous mining activities in the area. The snow seasonal deposition of FMs and PAHs was estimated in a snowpit dug at the top of the Austre Brøggerbreen glacier, indicating the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of these compounds.

The increasing adoption of intelligent transportation system (ITS) data in smart-city initiatives worldwide has offered unprecedented opportunities for improving transportation air quality management. In this paper, we demonstrate the effective use of ITS and other traffic data to develop a link-level and hourly-based dynamic vehicle emission inventory. Our work takes advantage of the extensive ITS infrastructure deployed in Nanjing, China (6600 km2) that offers high-resolution, multi-source traffic data of the road network. Improved than conventional emission inventories, the ITS data empower the strength of revealing significantly temporal and spatial heterogeneity of traffic dynamics that pronouncedly impacts traffic emission patterns. Four urban districts account for only 4% of the area but approximately 30%–40% of vehicular emissions (e.g., CO2 and air pollutants). Owing to the detailed resolution of road network traffic, two types of emission hotspots are captured by the dynamic emission inventory: those in the urban area dominated by urban passenger traffic, and those along outlying highway corridors reflecting inter-city freight transportation (especially in terms of NOX). Fine-grained quantification of emissions reductions from traffic restriction scenarios is explored. ITS data-driven emission management systems coupled with atmospheric models offer the potential for dynamic air quality management in the future.

Although the aggregation of graphene oxide (GO) has been widely researched, the influence of the GO size on the homoaggregation behavior and its interaction with environmental media are still unexplored. In this work, critical coagulation concentration (CCC) values for GO with different sizes, from micro to nanosheet, were measured with NaCl and CaCl₂ electrolytes, and the results indicated that GO with the largest size presented the smallest CCC value. Aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) was selected as a natural solid particle representative to mimic the interaction between GO and environmental media. Batch experiments were conducted in solution with different pH and ionic strength. Results indicated that the attachment capacity of large GO onto Al₂O₃ particles was greater than that of small GO. The experimental data were well fitted with Freundlich model. The electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding interaction dominated the interaction process between GO and Al₂O₃. These findings are important for better understanding in the environmental fate and transport of GO.

The mutual influences of C₆₀ fullerene (C₆₀) and heavy metal ions (Cd, Cu, and Pb) on the uptake, transportation, and accumulation of these coexisting pollutants in four rice cultivars planted in agricultural soil were investigated during the whole life cycle of rice. The biomass of the rice plants was not affected significantly by the presence of C₆₀. C₆₀ exposure exerted different impacts on the bioaccumulation of Cd, Cu, and Pb in various rice tissues. For example, the bioaccumulation of Cd in rice 9311 panicles was significantly decreased (p < .05) when it was exposed to 1000 mg/kg C₆₀, whereas the changes of Cu and Pb levels in panicles were not statistically significant. C₆₀ was absorbed by rice roots and transported to the stems and panicles, and it tended to form aggregates in rice tissues. C₆₀ concentrations in the roots, stems, and panicles of the four rice cultivars that were harvested after a 130-day exposure to 600 mg/kg C₆₀ were 40–292, 4.4–24.5 and 0.077–1.2 mg/kg (dry weight), respectively. C₆₀ and heavy metal ions exhibited different uptake and transportation mechanisms, which depended on the rice cultivar, soil heavy metal ion concentration, and C₆₀ exposure time and concentration. For example, the average C₆₀ in the four rice cultivars was increased sharply, from 47.4 to 196.3 mg/kg from the tillering to booting stages, whereas Cd levels increased only slightly, from 23.1 to 25.9 mg/kg. The study demonstrated that the bioaccumulation of C₆₀ and heavy metal ions under co-contamination scenario differs from under single contaminant. The accumulation of C₆₀ in rice panicles may increase the concern of food safety.

The problem of effective assessment of risk posed by complex mixtures of toxic chemicals in the environment is a major challenge for government regulators and industry. The biological effect of the individual contaminants, where these are known, can be measured; but the problem lies in relating toxicity to the multiple constituents of contaminant cocktails. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that diverse contaminant mixtures may cause a greater toxicity than the sum of their individual parts, due to synergistic interactions between contaminants with different intracellular targets. Lysosomal membrane stability in hemocytes from marine mussels was used for in vitro toxicity tests; and was coupled with analysis using the isobole method and a linear additive statistical model. The findings from both methods have shown significant emergent synergistic interactions between environmentally relevant chemicals (i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, biocides and a surfactant) when exposed to isolated hemocytes as a mixture of 3 & 7 constituents. The results support the complexity-based hypothesis that emergent toxicity occurs with increasing contaminant diversity, and raises questions about the validity of estimating toxicity of contaminant mixtures based on the additive toxicity of single components. Further experimentation is required to investigate the potential for interactive effects in mixtures with more constituents (e.g., 50–100) at more environmentally realistic concentrations in order to test other regions of the model, namely, very low concentrations and high diversity. Estimated toxicant diversity coupled with tests for lysosomal damage may provide a potential tool for determining the toxicity of estuarine sediments, dredge spoil or contaminated soil.

The occurrence and transportation of antibiotics in biofilms from natural and engineered sources have attracted increasing interests. Nevertheless, the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the responses of biofilms to the exposure to antibiotics are not clear. In this study, the effects of EPS on the sorption and biological responses to one representative antibiotic, sulfamethizole (STZ), in model biofilms were investigated. Proteins dominated the interactions between the EPS and the STZ and the EPS from a moving bed biofilm reactor exhibited the strongest interaction with the STZ. The EPS served as important reservoirs for the STZ and the tested biofilms all showed reduced sorption capacities for the STZ after the EPS were extracted. The respiratory rates and typical enzymatic activities were reduced after the EPS were extracted. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing results confirmed that the bacterial community in the biofilm without the EPS was more vulnerable to antibiotic shock as indicated by the community diversity and richness indices. A greater increase in the abundance of susceptible species was observed in the natural biofilm. The results comprehensively suggested that the EPS played important role in biosorption of STZ and alleviated the direct damage of the antibiotic to the cells; in addition the extent of the bacterial community response was associated with the origins of the biofilms. Our study provided details on the responses of multi-species biofilms to the exposure to an antibiotic and highlighted the role of the EPS in interacting with the antibiotic, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the bioremediation of antibiotics in real-life natural and engineered biofilm systems.

Concentrations of 26 brominated flame retardants (BFRs), including 19 polybrominated diphenyl ethers congeners (PBDEs), 3 isomers of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), and 4 alternative BFRs (alt-BFRs; hexabromobenzene, pentabromotoluene, 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromphenoxy)ethane, and decabromodiphenylethane) were determined in outdoor settled dust and pine needles collected across mainland China. BFRs were extensively found in the two matrices, with mean total concentrations at 4090 and 314 ng/g dry weight (dw), in dust and pine needles, respectively. The total BFRs concentrations in dust significantly varied among three mixed-land-use categories, with mean concentrations of 74.3, 1284, and 25,525 ng/g dw in rural, urban, and point source areas, respectively. For PBDE congeners, dust samples contained predominantly BDE-209 (69.2% of the total BFRs), whereas lower brominated PBDEs such as BDE-28 (19.7%), −47 (11.0%), and −99 (12.2%) accounted for higher proportions in pine needles. Spatial distribution of BFRs showed distinct geographical signatures with the highest levels found in South Central China. Application of McLachlan's framework to our data suggested that the uptake of BFRs in pine needles was controlled primarily by kinetically limited gaseous deposition and by particle-bound deposition. Assessment on human exposure to BFRs through outdoor dust ingestion revealed a low risk for Chinese adults and toddlers.

In August 2016, continuous measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and trace gases were conducted at an urban site in Wuhan. Four high-ozone (O3) days and twenty-seven non-high-O3 days were identified according to the China's National Standard Level II (∼100 ppbv). The occurrence of high-O3 days was accompanied by tropical cyclones. Much higher concentrations of VOCs and carbon monoxide (CO) were observed on the high-O3 days (p < 0.01). Model simulations revealed that vehicle exhausts were the dominant sources of VOCs, contributing 45.4 ± 5.2% and 37.3 ± 2.9% during high-O3 and non-high-O3 days, respectively. Both vehicle exhausts and stationary combustion made significantly larger contributions to O3 production on high-O3 days (p < 0.01). Analysis using a chemical transport model found that local photochemical formation accounted for 74.7 ± 5.8% of the daytime O3, around twice the regional transport (32.2 ± 5.4%), while the nighttime O3 was mainly attributable to regional transport (59.1 ± 9.9%). The local O3 formation was generally limited by VOCs in urban Wuhan. To effectively control O3 pollution, the reduction ratio of VOCs to NOx concentrations should not be lower than 0.73, and the most efficient O3 abatement could be achieved by reducing VOCs from vehicle exhausts. This study contributes to the worldwide database of O3-VOC-NOx sensitivity research. Its findings will be helpful in formulating and implementing emission control strategies for dealing with O3 pollution in Wuhan.
