Anthropogenic noise compromises the anti-predator behaviour of the European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.)
2017
Spiga, Ilaria | Aldred, Nicholas | Caldwell, Gary S.
Anthropogenic noise is a significant pollutant of the world's oceans, affecting behavioural and physiological traits in a range of species, including anti-predator behaviours. Using the open field test, we investigated the effects of recordings of piling and drilling noise on the anti-predator behaviour of captive juvenile European seabass in response to a visual stimulus (a predatory mimic). The impulsive nature of piling noise triggered a reflexive startle response, which contrasted the behaviour elicited by the continuous drilling noise. When presented with the predatory mimic, fish exposed to both piling and drilling noise explored the experimental arena more extensively than control fish exposed to ambient noise. Fish under drilling and piling conditions also exhibited reduced predator inspection behaviour. Piling and drilling noise induced stress as measured by ventilation rate. This study provides further evidence that the behaviour and physiology of European seabass is significantly affected by exposure to elevated noise levels.

2017
Gil-Alana, Luis A. | Solarin, Sakiru Adebola
This paper deals with the analysis of the global and per capita NOx and VOC emissions in the U.S. and the evaluation of the effectiveness of a number of environmental policies conducted by the government during the last 50 years. For this purpose we have employed fractional integration techniques, which are more flexible than other standard approaches based on the dichotomy between stationary I(0) and nonstationary I(1) behavior. Using the I(d) class of models, our results indicate first that the two NOx series display orders of integration substantially higher than 1, and though the VOC series display smaller orders, the unit root hypothesis cannot be rejected, indicating lack of mean reversion in the four series examined. Including dummy variables for each of the breaks referring to the environmental policies, the results show that the five policies investigated (at 1965, 1967, 1970, 1977 and 1990) were effective in reducing the number of emissions, being particularly important the one that was adopted in 1970.

2017
Reitsma, Joshua | Murphy, Diane C. | Archer, Abigail F. | York, Richard H.
As nitrogen entering coastal waters continues to be an issue, much attention has been generated to identify potential options that may help alleviate this stressor to estuaries, including the propagation of bivalves to remove excess nitrogen. Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) from numerous Cape Cod, MA, (USA) sources were analyzed for nitrogen content stored in tissues that would represent a net removal of nitrogen from a water body if harvested. Results showed local oysters average 0.69% nitrogen by total dry weight (mean 0.28gN/animal) and quahogs average 0.67% nitrogen by total dry weight (mean 0.22gN/animal); however, these values did vary by season and to a lesser extent by location or grow-out method. The differences in nitrogen content were largely related to the mass of shell or soft tissue. Nitrogen isotope data indicate shellfish from certain water bodies in the region are incorporating significant amounts of nitrogen from anthropogenic sources.

Reductions of zooplankton biomasses and grazing pressures were observed during overfishing-induced trophic cascades and concurrent oil spills at global scales. Recent phytoplankton increments followed, once Fe-, P-, and N-nutrient limitations of commensal diazotrophs and dinoflagellates were also eliminated by respective human desertification, deforestation, and eutrophication during climate changes. Si-limitation of diatoms instead ensued during these last anthropogenic perturbations of agricultural effluents and sewage loadings. Consequently, ~15% of total world-wide annual asthma trigger responses, i.e. amounting to ~45 million adjacent humans during 2004, resulted from brevetoxin and palytoxin poisons in aerosol forms of western boundary current origins. They were denoted by greater global harmful algal bloom [HAB] abundances and breathing attacks among sea-side children during prior decadal surveys of asthma prevalence, compiled here in ten paired shelf ecosystems of western and eutrophied boundary currents. Since 1965, such inferred onshore fluxes of aerosolized DOC poisons of HABs may have served as additional wind-borne organic carriers of toxic marine MeHg, phthalate, and DDT/DDE vectors, traced by radio-iodine isotopes to potentially elicit carcinomas. During these exchanges, as much as 40% of mercury poisonings may instead have been effected by inhalation of collateral HAB-carried marine neurotoxic aerosols of MeHg, not just from eating marine fish. Health impacts in some areas were additional asthma and pneumonia episodes, as well as endocrine disruptions among the same adjacent humans, with known large local rates of thyroid cancers, physician-diagnosed pulmonary problems, and ubiquitous high indices of mercury in hair, pesticides in breast milk, and phthalates in urine.
Mostrar más [+] Menos [-]In situ estimates of horizontal turbulent diffusivity at the sea surface for oil transport simulation
2017
Matsuzaki, Yoshitaka | Fujita, Isamu
Despite many previous in situ estimates of horizontal diffusivity below the sea surface, horizontal diffusivity at the sea surface, which is a parameter required in the prediction of oil diffusion, has not been formulated. This study conducted in situ estimations to quantify horizontal diffusivity at the sea surface. To measure the horizontal diffusivity at and below the sea surface, clusters of thin sponge rubbers (simulating spilled oil), together with drifting buoys, were deployed on successive occasions in Sagami Bay, Japan. The experimental results revealed that horizontal diffusivity was larger at the sea surface than below. Based on the results, a procedure for estimating horizontal diffusivity at the sea surface was introduced to predict the diffusion of spilled oil, which was verified using numerical simulations. The simulation results showed good agreement with observations, suggesting the procedure is appropriate for the estimation of horizontal diffusivity at the sea surface.

2017
Kubo, Atsushi | Kanda, Jota
Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) contents, their stable C and N isotope ratio (δ13C and δ15N), and chlorophyll a ([Chl a]sed) of surface sediments were investigated monthly to identify the seasonal variations and sources of organic matter in Tokyo Bay. The sedimentary TOC (TOCsed) and TN (TNsed) contents, and the sedimentary δ13C and δ15N (δ13Csed and δ15Nsed) values were higher in summer than other seasons. The seasonal variations were controlled by high primary production in the water column and hypoxic water in the bottom water during summer. The fraction of terrestrial and marine derived organic matter was estimated by Bayesian mixing model using stable isotope data and TOC/TN ratio. Surface sediments in Tokyo Bay are dominated by marine derived organic matter, which accounts for about 69±5% of TOCsed.

This study report the impact of heavy metals on cytopathology and DNA damage in the gills and hepatopancreas of Perna viridis collected from Ennore estuary and the Kovalam coastal waters. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed significant differences among all variables at the scale of plots. The ultrastructural alterations such as lack of microvilli, distorted mitochondria, electron dense particles and the presence of large mucous droplets were common in the gill and hepatopancreatic cells of mussels from Ennore estuary. However, the gill and hepatopancreatic cells of P. viridis from Kovalam revealed normal compartmentalization of cells. The percentage of tail DNA in the mussels from Ennore estuary was recorded as 12.44 and 10.14% in the gills and hepatopancreas respectively. Overall, it has been demonstrated that the Comet and cytopathological assays are useful biomarkers to assess the level of pollution and it provide reliable information on ecotoxicology and genotoxicology of coastal waters.

2017
Fujioka, Takahiro | Masaki, Shunya | Kodamatani, Hitoshi | Ikehata, Keisuke
The ultraviolet (UV)-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) is a powerful technology commonly utilised in recent potable water reuse (PR) schemes. The AOP involves the generation of highly reactive free radicals (e.g. hydroxyl, HO•) and is primarily applied for the removal of two target trace organic chemicals—N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and 1,4-dioxane — in the PR schemes. Both of these organics are not well removed by the reverse osmosis (RO) process. NDMA is a probable carcinogen and is often present in reclaimed water at concentrations higher than the guidelines established for PR. This review aimed to provide an understanding of the current UV-based advanced oxidation technologies for NDMA removal in PR, their limitations and the future of advanced technologies for their removal. NDMA is readily photolysed by direct UV irradiation, while an AOP such as UV/H₂O₂ process is necessary for the destruction of 1,4-dioxane. Unfortunately, the generation of hydroxyl radicals through UV photolysis of H₂O₂ is largely inefficient with conversion on the order of 20% under normal plant operations and the addition of H₂O₂ (e.g. 3 mg/L) provides only a negligible improvement in NDMA destruction. However, AOP can also be achieved without continuous chemical addition through the application of UV irradiation to heterogeneous photocatalysts (e.g. TiO₂). The UV/TiO₂ process generates hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen molecules, both of which degrade NDMA into by-products (e.g. methylamine or dimethylamine). Recent studies revealed that modification of the surface morphology of TiO₂ can not only enhance NDMA destruction but also alter the composition of the degradation by-products.

2017

Atmospheric reactive nitrogen (N) has induced large impacts on air pollution and ecosystem health worldwide. Atmospheric reactive N emission and deposition have largely increased in China since 1980 due to rapid agricultural, industrial, and urban development. But scientific gaps still remain in the regional and temporal variability in atmospheric N emissions and deposition. Meanwhile, the environmental impacts of N pollution and deposition are of great concern in China. This paper overviews the status of anthropogenic N emissions and deposition and their linkages to air pollution in China. The major findings include two aspects: (1) anthropogenic reactive N (e.g., NH₃ and NOₓ) emissions contribute greatly to secondary inorganic aerosol formation and haze pollution and (2) dry N deposition is comparable in importance to wet N deposition, suggesting that both dry and wet deposition should be quantified simultaneously. Future research challenges on atmospheric N emission and deposition are discussed as well. China needs to (1) reduce the uncertainties of national emission inventory of various N species, especially organic N compounds; (2) establish national networks for atmospheric N concentration and deposition monitoring; and (3) evaluate ecological and environmental impacts of N pollution and deposition in typical ecosystems. Last but not least, N deposition modeling tools should be improved based on localized parameters and further used in future N regulation.

At present, few studies have investigated the marine litter abundance, composition and distribution on rocky bottoms due to sampling constraints. We surveyed by means of the ROV imaging technique a system of biogenic rocky outcrops classified as a Site of Community Importance in the Adriatic Sea. A mean density of 3.3 (±1.8) items/100m2 was recorded, with a strong dominance of fishing- and aquaculture-related debris, accounting for 69.4% and 18.9% of the total, respectively. The abundance of litter over the rocky bottoms was significantly higher than that on soft substrates, and its spatial distribution proved to be related to hydrographic factors. Litter-fauna interactions were high, with most of the debris (65.7%) entangling or covering benthic organisms, in particular habitat constructors such as the endangered sea sponge Geodia cydonium. Unless appropriate measures are undertaken to address this problem, the abundance of marine litter in the area is likely to increase.
