It is likely that pollution from chemical facilities will affect the health of any exposed population; however, the majority of scientific evidence available has focused on occupational exposure rather than environmental. Consequently, this study assessed whether there could have been an excess of cancer-related mortality associated with environmental exposure to pollution from chemical installations – for populations residing in municipalities in the vicinity of chemical industries. To this end, we designed an ecological study which assessed municipal mortality due to 32 types of cancer in the period from 1999 to 2008. The exposure to pollution was estimated using distance from the facilities to the centroid of the municipality as a proxy for exposure. In order to assess any increased cancer mortality risk in municipalities potentially exposed to chemical facilities pollution (situated at a distance of ≤5 km from a chemical installation), we employed Bayesian Hierarchical Poisson Regression Models. This included two Bayesian inference methods: Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA) and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC, for validation). The reference category consisted of municipalities beyond the 5 km limit. We found higher mortality risk (relative risk, RR; estimated by INLA, 95% credible interval, 95%CrI) for both sexes for colorectal (RR, 1.09; 95%CrI, 1.05–1.15), gallbladder (1.14; 1.03–1.27), and ovarian cancers (1.10; 1.02–1.20) associated with organic chemical installations. Notably, pleural cancer (2.27; 1.49–3.41) in both sexes was related to fertilizer facilities. Associations were found for women, specifically for ovarian (1.11; 1.01–1.22) and breast cancers (1.06; 1.00–1.13) in the proximity of explosives/pyrotechnics installations; increased breast cancer mortality risk (1.10; 1.03–1.18) was associated with proximity to inorganic chemical installations. The results suggest that environmental exposure to pollutants from some types of chemical facilities may be associated with increased mortality from several different types of cancer.

Natural sources, such as soil and wind-erosion dust (SWD), biomass open burning (BOB), sea salt spray (SSAS) and biogenic source (BIO), are major contributors to atmospheric emissions of trace elements (TEs) globally. In this study, we used a comprehensive approach to account for area-, production- and biofuel consumption-based emission factor calculation methods, and thus developed an integrated high-resolution emission inventory for 15 types of TEs (As, B, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, V and Zn) originated from natural sources in China for the year 2015. The results show that national emissions of TEs in 2015 range from 7.45 tons (Hg) to 1, 400 tons (Zn) except for the extremely high emissions of Mn (10, 677 tons). SWD and BIO are identified as the top two source contributors, accounting for approximately 67.7% and 26.1% of the total emissions, respectively. Absolute emissions of TEs from natural sources are high in the Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Tibet autonomous regions with large areas of bare soil and desert. However, emission intensity of TEs per unit area in the Southern provinces of China is higher than those in Northern China and Southwestern China, with the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces displaying the highest emission intensity. Our results suggest that controlling SWD can play a significant role in reducing fugitive particulate matter and the associated emissions of TEs from natural sources in China; and desertification control is particularly critical in the Northwest provinces where the majority of deserts are located.

Straw amendment and plant root exudates modify the quality and quantities of soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) and then manipulate the fractions of soil selenium (Se) and its bioavailability. Two typical soils with distinct pH were selected to investigate the effect of different contributors on DOM-Se in soil. The mechanisms relying on the variation in DOM characteristics (quality, quantity and composition) were explored by UV–Vis, ATR-FTIR and 3D-EEM. Straw amendment significantly (p < 0.05) suppressed the selenate bioavailability. The reduction in wheat Se content was greater in krasnozems than in Lou soil, as more HA fraction appeared in krasnozems. The root exudates of wheat mainly elevated the low molecular hydrophilic compounds (Hy) in soil, which contributed to the SOL-Hy-Se fractions and thus grain Se in soils (p < 0.01). However, straw amendment promoted DOM transforming from small molecules (Hy and FA) to aromatic large molecules (HA), when accompanied with the reduction and retention of Se associated with these molecules. As a result, selenium bioavailability and toxicity reduced with DOM amendment and DOM-Se transformation.

Pesticides are widely and intensively used in the world for crops protection. High pesticide loadings can potentially pollute the water resource. However, little is known about the usage, environmental emission and fate of pesticides in river basins. Here, we firstly established a pesticide emission estimation method, and investigated the environmental fate of three commonly used pesticides (chlorpyrifos, triazophos, and isoprothiolane) in Dongjiang River basin, southern China using mathematical modelling approach in combination with field monitoring. The distributed hydrological model SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was applied to model the emission of the target pesticides from farmland to stream water, and their fate in the basin. A satisfactory model calibration for flow and suspended sediment was obtained based on eight-year observation data of four hydrological monitoring stations in Dongjiang River basin. The differences between the simulation and observation of pesticides were almost within an order of magnitude, including more than 53% differences within 0.5 order of magnitude. In the river basin, 78860 kg of chlorpyrifos, 54990 kg of triazophos and 35320 kg of isoprothiolane were sprayed onto the crops, the estimated annual emissions of the basin come up to 1801 kg, 3779 kg, and 2330 kg under the conditions of rainfall, surface runoff and percolation. After a series of environmental processes including settlement and degradation within the channels, the predicted export masses for chlorpyrifos, triazophos and isoprothiolane were reduced to 266 kg, 1858 kg, 1350 kg, respectively. Successful prediction suggests that the reliable estimation method combing the SWAT modelling can help us understand the source, concentration levels and fate of pesticides in river basin in different scales. Combing the method of emission and fate modelling method we proposed, countries and regions lacking pesticide-application database can facilitate better management of pesticides.

Meiobenthic nematodes have been designated as sensitive global models in the development of biomonitoring and ecotoxicology monitoring programs howbeit the sensitivity of these organisms against oxidative stress biomarkers have never been addressed. The present study aimed to decipher this research axis after selecting and culturing a single nematode species from an entire community through original laboratory protocols. The purpose of this investigation was to change the grain size of the sediment into the immediate environment of nematodes by progressively adding a biosubstrate made from Sepia officinalis endoskeletton. At the end of the experiment, Metoncholaimus pristiurus became the unique component of the nematode species when the sediment was enriched with 80% of S. officinalis powder. After the mono-species level had been achieved, the selected species was fed on an another biosubstrate made from bodies of Porcellio scaber under the identical laboratory controlled conditions of light and temperature adopted during the selection process. Accordingly, the bioassay protocol this study layed new foundations for the study of meiobenthic nematodes in the biomarker field. Our results revealed that, in case of M. pritiurus, discernible oxidative stress responses are valid for catalase and gluthatione S-transferase. Indeed, for both enzymes, a clear increase in the activity was recorded, and the response was more reinforced when zinc and permethrin were administrated in combination. The relevance of the protocols proposed in this work parallels their global applicability to reach and maintain the monospecific level in laboratory by using biosubstrates made from animals widely distributed. It is true also that our data provided the first results in terms of biochemical biomarkers for meiobenthic nematodes and showed that the selected taxa, M. pristiurus, could be one of the first marine taxa responding early to the tested stressors, zinc and permethrin, even at very low concentrations.

MSW landfill releases a lot of harmful pollutants such as H₂S, NH₃, and VOCs. In this study, two laboratory-scale biocovers such as biochar (BC) derived from agricultural & forestry wastes (AFW) pyrolysis, and sludge modified the biochar (SBC) were designed and used to remove the harmful pollutants. In order to understand in-situ biodegradation mechanism of the harmful pollutants by the SBC, the removal performances of the harmful pollutants together with the bacterial community in the BC and SBC were investigated in simulated landfill systems for 60 days comparing with the contrast experiment of a landfill cover soil (LCS). Meanwhile, the adsorption capacities of representative harmful pollutants (hydrogen sulfide, toluene, acetone and chlorobenzene) in the LCS, BC, and SBC were also tested in a fixed bed reactor. The removal efficiencies of the harmful pollutants by the SBC ranged from 95.43% to 100.00%, which was much higher than that of the LCS. The adsorption capacities of the harmful pollutants in the SBC were 4 times higher than that of the LCS since the SBC exhibited higher BET surface and N-containing functional groups. Meanwhile, the biodegradation rates of the harmful pollutants in the SBC were also much higher than that of the LCS since the populations of the bacterial community in the SBC were more abundant due to its facilitating the growth and activity of microorganisms in the porous structure of the SBC. In addition, a synergistic combination of adsorption and biodegradation in the SBC that enhanced the reproduction rate of microorganisms by consuming the absorbed-pollutants as carbon sources, which also contributed to enhance the biodegradation rates of the harmful pollutants.

A novel Z-scheme photocatalyst consisting of acidified graphitic carbon nitrogen (ag-C₃N₄)/carbon quantum dots/CdIn₂S₄ (CN/CQDs/CIS) was successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. The optimized CN-2/CQDs-3/CIS exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic performance in the degradation of ibuprofen under visible-light irradiation. Based on a series of characterizations, the ag-C₃N₄ and CQDs were distributed uniformly on the surface of the cubic spinel structure of CIS, with intimate contact among the materials. This intimate heterogeneous interface facilitated the migration of photogenerated carriers, further leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance. These results also indicated that the CQDs not only connect ag-C₃N₄ with CIS through covalent bonds but also enhance the visible-light adsorption. According to the analysis of the UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and Mott-Schottky curves, the mechanism of the Z-scheme heterojunction is proposed. The CQDs serve as electron mediators and transfer the electrons in the conduction band (CB) of ag-C₃N₄ to recombine with the holes in the valence band (VB) of CIS in the Z-scheme, leading to the enhanced separation efficiency of the photogenerated electrons in the CB of ag-C₃N₄ and the holes in the VB of CIS. The pollutant IBU was degraded by h⁺, ·O₂⁻ and ·OH, as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis.

Deltamethrin (DLM) is an important member of the pyrethroid pesticide family, and its widespread use has led to serious environmental and health problems. Exposure to DLM causes pathological changes in the liver of animals and humans and can lead to liver fibrosis. However, the mechanism of DLM-induced liver fibrosis remains unclear. Therefore, to address its potential molecular mechanisms, we used both in vivo and in vitro methods. Quails were treated in vivo by intragastric administration of different concentrations of DLM (0, 15, 30, or 45 mg kg⁻¹), and the chicken liver cancer cell line LMH was treated in vitro with various doses of DLM (0, 50, 200, or 800 μg mL⁻¹). We found that DLM treatment in vivo induced liver fibrosis in a dose-dependent manner through the promotion of oxidative stress, activation of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and phosphorylation of Smad2/3. Treatment of LMH cells with different concentrations of DLM similarly induced oxidative stress and also decreased cell viability. Collectively, our study demonstrates that DLM-induced liver fibrosis in quails occurs via activation of the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway.

Thiacloprid is widely used in agriculture and may affect pollinators. However, its molecular effects are poorly known. Here, we report the global gene expression profile in the brain of honey bee foragers assessed by RNA-sequencing. Bees were exposed for 72 h to nominal concentrations of 25 and 250 ng/bee via sucrose solution. Determined residue concentrations by LC-MS/MS were 0.59 and 5.49 ng/bee, respectively. Thiacloprid exposure led to 5 and 71 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. Nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial ribosomal proteins and enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation, as well as metabolism enzymes and transporters were altered at 5.49 ng/bee. Kyoto Encylopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis revealed that mitochondrial ribosome proteins, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, pyrimidine, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism and additional metabolic pathways were altered. Among 21 genes assessed by RT-qPCR, the transcript of farnesol dehydrogenase involved in juvenile hormone III synthesis was significantly down-regulated. Transcripts of cyp6a14-like and apolipophorin-II like protein, cytochrome oxidase (cox17) and the non-coding RNA (LOC102654625) were significantly up-regulated at 5.49 ng/bee. Our findings indicate that thiacloprid causes transcriptional changes of genes prominently associated with mitochondria, particularly oxidative phosphorylation. This highlight potential effects of this neonicotinoid on energy metabolism, which may compromise bee foraging and thriving populations at environmentally relevant concentrations.

This study presents the distribution characteristics and possible sources of fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and its components, as well as policy-related pollution reduction in the Chinese cities of Jinan, Shijiazhuang (SJZ), Chengdu, Wuxi, Wuhan, and Harbin (HRB). PM₂.₅ samples were collected using mid-volume samplers during the autumn of 2017 in all six cities. The samples were analyzed to determine the ambient PM₂.₅ compositions, including the concentrations of water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs), carbonaceous aerosols, and elements concentrations. The chemical ratios of organic carbon to elemental carbon and nitrate to sulfate as well as the enrichment factors of elements were calculated to establish the possible sources of PM₂.₅ in all six cities. The highest PM₂.₅ concentration was 152 μg/m³ in SJZ, while the lowest concentration was 47 μg/m³ in HRB. During the sampling period in these six cities, the PM₂.₅ concentrations exceeded the World Health Organization recommended daily average air quality guidelines by 2.4–6.1 times, and WSIIs, carbonaceous aerosols, and elements accounted for 31.8%–61.6%, 9.8%–35.1%, and 0.9%–2.5% of the PM₂.₅, respectively. In 2013, the Chinese government formulated the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) for controlling air pollution, and effective measures have been implemented since then. Compared with previous studies conducted during 2009–2013 before the implementation of the APPCAP, the concentrations of PM₂.₅ and most of its components decreased to varying degrees, and large changes in the chemical ratios of PM₂.₅ components were observed. These results indicate that PM₂.₅ sources vary among these six cities and that China has improved the ambient air quality in these cities through the implementation of air pollution control policies. The APPCAP have achieved considerable results in continuously reducing pollution concentrations, although the air pollution concentrations observed in this study remain high compared with those of other countries.
