1-bromopropane is a US Environmental Protection Agency-identified significant hazardous air pollutant with concerned adverse respiratory effect. We aimed to investigate the relationship between 1-bromopropane exposure and pulmonary function and the underlying role of oxidative damage, which all remain unknown. Pulmonary function and urinary biomarkers of 1-bromopropane exposure (N-Acetyl-S-(n-propyl)-L-cysteine, BPMA) and oxidative damage to DNA (8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG) and lipid (8-iso-prostaglandin-F2α, 8-iso-PGF2α) were measured for 3259 Chinese urban adults from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. The cross-sectional relationship of BPMA with pulmonary function and the joint relationship of BPMA and 8-OHdG or 8-iso-PGF2α with pulmonary function were investigated by linear mixed models. The mediating roles of 8-OHdG and 8-iso-PGF2α were evaluated by mediation analysis. Additionally, a panel of 138 subjects was randomly convened from the same cohort to evaluate the stability of BPMA repeatedly measured in urine samples collected over consecutive three days and intervals of one, two, and three years, and to estimate the longitudinal relationship of BPMA with pulmonary function change in three years. We found each 3-fold increase in BPMA was cross-sectionally related to FVC and FEV₁ reductions by 29.88-mL and 25.67-mL, respectively (all P < 0.05). Joint relationship of BPMA and 8-OHdG rather than 8-iso-PGF2α with reduced pulmonary function was observed. Moreover, 8-OHdG significantly mediated 9.44% of the BPMA-related FVC reduction. Findings from the panel revealed a fair to excellent stability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.43–0.79) of BPMA in repeated urines collected over a period of three years. Besides, BPMA was longitudinally related to pulmonary function reduction in three years: compared with subjects with persistently low BPMA level, those with persistently high BPMA level had 79.08-mL/year and 49.80-mL/year declines in FVC and FEV₁, respectively (all P < 0.05). Conclusively, 1-bromopropane exposure might impair pulmonary function of urban adult population, and oxidative DNA damage might be a potential mechanism underlying 1-bromopropane impairing pulmonary function especially FVC.

Microplastic pollution is currently one of the most intensely studied ecological issues. Numerous studies have estimated the distribution and concentration of microplastics in various environments and determine how they affect their inhabitants. Much less effort has been place on assessing the possible effects of microplastics on interactions between organisms, including interspecific competition. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that the presence of microplastics affects the proportion of individuals of coexisting species and the elimination rate of the inferior competitor. The hypothesis was tested in competitive experiments done in the absence and presence of spherical non-biodegradable polystyrene and polyethylene and biodegradable polyhydroxybutyrate in environmentally relevant densities. In each of the experiments, we used three different pairs of closely related planktonic species of the genus Daphnia composed of the superior and inferior competitor: D. pulex and D. magna, D. magna and D. galeata, D. pulex and D. galeata. The results support our hypothesis and demonstrate each microplastic type had a different effect on the density of the competing species. The presence of polystyrene and polyethylene lowered the density of the superior competitor in each of the three pairs, at least partially due to a reduction in the number of gravid females, but not their fecundity. The presence of the polyhydroxybutyrate, in turn, increased the population density of D. magna in the variants with each of the two remaining species. Moreover, the presence of microplastics affected the elimination rate of the inferior competitor, i.e. polystyrene expedited the exclusion of D. magna by D. pulex, and polyhydroxybutyrate hampered the exclusion of D. magna by D. pulex. Our results suggest that long-term exposure to environmentally relevant densities of both non-biodegradable and biodegradable microplastics may affect the relative abundance of co-occurring species in zooplankton communities, and thus the functioning of aquatic ecosystems.

Soil fumigants aim to control soil-borne diseases below levels that affect economic crop production, but their use also reduces the abundance of beneficial microorganisms. Previous studies have shown that adding various types of fertilizers to soil after fumigation can reshape the soil microbial community and regulate crop growth. We fumigated soil with dazomet (DZ) that had been cropped continuously for more than 20 years. After fumigation we applied silicon fertilizer, potassium humate organic fertilizer, Bacillus microbial fertilizer or a mixture of the last two. We studied the effects of different fertilizers treatments on the soil's physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, key soil pathogens and beneficial microbes. We found that fertilizers applied after fumigation promoted soil beneficial microorganisms (such as Fimicutes, Chloroflexi, Bacillus and Actinomadura) restoration; increased Fusarium and Phytophthora pathogen mortality, the content of ammonium nitrogen, sucrase enzyme activity; and increased strawberry fruit yield. A significant increase in strawberry yield was positively correlated with increases in beneficial microorganisms such as Gemmatimonadota, Firmicutes, Bacillus and Flavisolibacter. We concluded that organic fertilizer applied after fumigation significantly increased the number of beneficial microorganisms, improved the physicochemical properties of the soil, increased soil enzyme activities, inhibited the growth of soil pathogens to increase strawberry fruit yield. In summary, organic fertilizer activated soil beneficial microorganisms after soil fumigation, promoted soil health, and increased strawberry fruit yield.

Widespread conversion of coastal wetlands into aquaculture ponds in coastal region often results in degradation of the wetland ecosystems, but its effects on sediment's potential to produce greenhouse gases remain unclear. Using field sampling, incubation experiments and molecular analysis, we studied the sediment CH₄ production potential and the relevant microbial communities in a brackish marsh and the nearby aquaculture ponds in the Min River Estuary in southeastern China. Sediment CH₄ production potential was higher in the summer and autumn months than in spring and winter months, and it was significantly correlated with sediment carbon content among all environmental variables. The mean sediment CH₄ production potential in the aquaculture ponds (20.1 ng g⁻¹ d⁻¹) was significantly lower than that in the marsh (45.2 ng g⁻¹ d⁻¹). While Methanobacterium dominated in both habitats (41–59%), the overall composition of sediment methanogenic archaea communities differed significantly between the two habitats (p < 0.05) and methanogenic archaea alpha diversity was lower in the aquaculture ponds (p < 0.01). Network analysis revealed that interactions between sediment methanogenic archaea were much weaker in the ponds than in the marsh. Overall, these findings suggest that conversion of marsh land to aquaculture ponds significantly altered the sediment methanogenic archaea community structure and diversity and lowered the sediment's capacity to produce CH₄.

Both cancer and diabetes mellitus are serious health issues, accounting more than 11 million deaths worldwide annually. Targeted use of plant-mediated nanoparticles (NPs) in treatment of ailments has outstanding results due to their salient properties. The current study was designed to investigate the safe production of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Acacia nilotica. Different concentrations of AgNO₃ were tested to optimize the protocol for the synthesis of AgNPs from the bark extract. It was demonstrated that 0.1 M and 3 mM were found to be the optimum concentrations for the synthesis of AgNPs. Standard characterization techniques such as UV–vis spectrophotometry, SEM, SEM-EDX micrograph, spot analysis, elemental mapping and XRD were used for the conformation of biosynthesis of AgNPs. Absorption spectrum of plant-mediated AgNPs under UV–vis spectrophotometer showed a strong peak at 380 nm and 420 nm for AgNPs synthesized at 0.1 M and 3 mM concentration of salt. The SEM results showed that AgNPs were present in variable shapes within average particle size ranging from (20–50 nm). Anticancer, antidiabetic and antioxidant potential of green AgNPs was investigated and they showed promising results as compared to the positive and negative controls. Hence, AgNPs were found potent therapeutic agent against the human liver cancer cell lines (HepG2), strong inhibitor for α-glucosidase enzyme activity and scavenging agent against free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Further studies are however needed to confirm the molecular mechanism and biochemical reactions responsible for the anticancer and antidiabetic activities of the particles.

In agricultural fields, pesticides are widely used, but their residual presence in the environment poses a threat to humans, animals, insects, and ecosystems. The overuse of pesticides for pest control, enhancement of crop yield, etc. leaves behind a significant residual amount in the environment. Various robust, reliable, and reusable methods using a wide class of composites have been developed for the monitoring and controlling of pesticides. Researchers have discovered that carbon nanomaterials have a wide range of characteristics such as high porosity, conductivity and easy electron transfer that can be successfully used to detect pesticide residues from food. This review emphasizes the role of carbon nanomaterials in the field of pesticide residue analysis in different food matrices. The carbon nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes, carbon dots, carbon nanofibers, graphene/graphene oxides, and activated carbon fibres are discussed in the review. In addition, the review examines future prospects in this research area to help improve detection techniques for pesticides analysis.

In general, the remediation performance of heavy metals can be further improved by metal-oxide modified biochar. This work used MgO-modified rice husk biochar (MgO-5%@RHB-450 and MgO-5%@RHB-600) with high surface activity for simultaneous remediation and removal of heavy metals in soil and wastewater. The adsorption of MgO-5%@RHB-450/MgO-5%@RHB-600 for Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cr(VI) followed the pseudo-second order, with the adsorption capacities reaching 91.13/104.68, 166.68/173.22, 80.12/104.38 and 38.88/47.02 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The addition of 1.0% MgO-5%@RHB-450 and MgO-5%@RHB-600 could effectively decrease the CaCl₂-extractable Cd concentration (CaCl₂–Cd) by 66.2% and 70.0%, respectively. Moreover, MgO-5%@RHB-450 and MgO-5%@RHB-600 facilitated the transformation of exchangeable fractions to carbonate-bound and residual fractions, and reduced the exchangeable fractions by 8.1% and 9.6%, respectively. The mechanisms for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater by MgO-5%@RHB-450 and MgO-5%@RHB-600 mainly included complexation, ion exchange and precipitation, and the immobilization mechanisms in soil may be precipitation, complexation and pore filling. In general, this study provides high-efficiency functional materials for the remediation of heavy metal pollution.

2022
Harwood, Amanda D. | Nutile, Samuel A. | Simpson, Adam M.
Remediation of hydrophobic organic contaminants using activated carbon is an effective means by which to clean up contaminated areas. Predicting remediation success using laboratory experimentation with soil, however, is unclear. Current remediation efforts involving activated carbon addition to floodplain soils downstream of the Velsicol Chemical Corporation Superfund Site (VCCSS) have offered the opportunity to directly compare in situ activated carbon remediation with laboratory experimentation. The objective of the current study was to compare bioaccumulation of DDT, DDD, and DDE (DDX) residues by earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed to laboratory-aged (LA) or field-aged (FA) soils from four locations. Samples were evaluated at 0-, 3-, and 9-months post-remediation to determine the ability of laboratory studies to predict in situ remediation. Floodplain soils downstream from the VCCSS were amended with 2% by weight activated carbon in the field and the laboratory, and then aged for 3- or 9-months. At 0-, 3-, and 9-months bioaccumulation assays were conducted with LA and FA soils and tissue concentrations were compared within study sites. In both LA and FA soils, activated carbon caused significant reductions (37.01–92.94%) in bioaccumulated DDX in earthworms. Field-collected worms showed a similar trend in reduction of bioaccumulated DDX, suggesting activated carbon remediation was successful in reducing bioavailable DDX for native organisms within the floodplain soils. The rate of reduction in bioavailable DDX, however, was significantly faster in LA soils (β = −0.189, p < 0.0001) compared to FA soils (β = −0.054, p < 0.0038). Differences in temperature and methods of activated carbon incorporation between LA and FA soils may account for the differences in remediation rate, suggesting laboratory experiments may overpredict the extent or speed in which remediation occurs in the field. Therefore, use of laboratory studies in predicting success of activated carbon remediation may be most effective when conditions mimic field remediation as closely as possible.

Huo, Yanru | An, Zexiu | Li, Mingxue | Sun, Jianfei | Jiang, Jinchan | Zhou, Yuxin | He, Maoxia
Low-molecular-weight (LMW) phthalate acid esters (PAEs) tend to enter the atmosphere, flying for several kilometers, so it is easy to endanger human health. This work is the first to use quantum chemistry calculations (Gaussian 16 program) and computational toxicology (ECOSAR, TEST, and Toxtree software) to comprehensively study the ozonolysis mechanism of six LMW PAEs (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dipropyl phthalate (DPP), diisopropyl phthalate (DIP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)) in the atmosphere and the toxicity of DMP (take DMP as an example) in the conversion process. The results show that the electron-donating effect of the ortho position of the LMW PAEs has the most obvious influence on the ozonolysis. We summarized the ozonation reaction law of LMW PAEs at the optimal reaction site. At 298 K, the law of initial ozonolysis total rate constant of the LMW PAEs is kDIP > kDPP > kDIBP > kDMP > kDEP > kDBP, and the range is 9.56 × 10⁻²⁵ cm³ molecule⁻¹ s⁻¹ — 1.47 × 10⁻²² cm³ molecule⁻¹ s⁻¹. According to the results of toxicity assessment, the toxicity of products is lower than DMP for aquatic organisms after ozonolysis. But those products have mutagenicity, developmental toxicity, non-genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and corrosiveness to the skin. The proposed ozonolysis mechanism promotes our understanding of the environmental risks of PAEs and provides new ideas for studying the degradation of PAEs in the tropospheric gas phase.

Soil studies have reported the effect of Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) on soil microbial communities. However, how soil microbial communities and function shift after HCH addition into the red and purple soil remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the HCH residue fate, and the functional composition and structure of microbial communities to HCH in the two soils. Under the 100 g/ha and 1000 g/ha treatment, the dissipation rate of HCH was 0.0386 and 0.0273 in the purple soil, 0.0145 and 0.0195 in the red soil. The enrichment of HCH degrading genes leads to a higher HCH dissipation rate in the purple soil. PCoA results demonstrated that HCH addition has a different effect on the community diversity in the two soils, and Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the major phyla in the two soils. The soil microbiome average variation degree values of red soil were higher than purple soil, which indicated that the soil microbiome in the purple soil was more stable than in the red soil under HCH addition. PICRUSt2 results indicated that functional genes involved in the carbon, nitrogen biogeochemical cycles and HCH degradation were more tolerant to HCH addition in the purple soil. This study provides new insights into understanding of the effect of HCH addition on soil microbial communities and function in the red and purple paddy soil.
