Influence of humic acid structure on the accumulation of oxyfluorfen in tropical soils of mountain agroecosystems

Herbicide application is a practice commonly used in agricultural systems because it is an efficient method of weed control. An inherent characteristic of some herbicides used in mountain agriculture, such as oxyfluorfen, is high adsorption to soil organic matter (SOM). Thus, intensive management that changes the quantity and quality of SOM, such as soil tillage and the massive application of organic fertilizers such as poultry litter, may favor soil contamination by this herbicide and alter its dynamics in the environment. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the structures of humic substances (HSs) in the soil of forest areas and areas with intensive production of vegetables, relating them to the accumulation of the herbicide oxyfluorfen in tropical mountain agroecosystems. Organic carbon content was quantified in HSs, humic acid (HAs) were structurally characterized by CP/MAS ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy, and the oxyfluorfen molecule was detected and quantified using the QuEChERS residue detection method with subsequent analysis by LC-MS/MS. Oxyfluorfen was not detected in the forest areas, but it was detected in the vegetable growing areas at points with the lowest slope and high contents of organic matter and clay, with values of up to 0.13 mg kg⁻¹. The intensification in the SOM mineralization process, promoted by the intensive management adopted in the vegetable growing areas, resulted in a 16.46% reduction in COT, a 58.84% reduction in the carbon content in the form of SH and a reduction in the structures that give recalcitrance to the HA molecule (CAₗₖyₗ-H,R, CCOO–H,R, CAᵣₒₘₐₜᵢc-H,R, and CAᵣₒₘₐₜᵢc-O) when compared to those values in the forest area, presenting HAs with more aliphatic and labile properties. Thus, due to the structural characteristics of the HAs in the vegetable production areas, the herbicide oxyfluorfen showed a close relationship with the more aliphatic oxygenated structures, namely, CAₗₖyₗ-O,N, CAₗₖyₗ-O and CAₗₖyₗ-di-O.

The increasing demand for fresh water coupled with the need to recycle water and nutrients has witnessed a global increase in wastewater irrigation. However, the development of antibiotic resistance hotspots in different environmental compartments, as a result of wastewater reuse is becoming a global health concern. The effect of irrigation water sources (wastewater, surface water, fresh water) on the presence and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (blaCTX₋ₘ₋₃₂, tet-W, sul1, cml-A, and erm-B) and class 1 integrons (intI1) were investigated in the irrigation water-soil-crop continuum using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Sul1 and blaCTX₋ₘ₋₃₂ were the most and least abundant ARGs in three environments, respectively. The abundance of ARGs and intI1 significantly decreased from wastewater to surface water and then fresh water. However, irrigation water sources had no significant effect on the abundance of ARGs and intI1 in soil and crop samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that UV index and air temperature attenuate the abundance of ARGs and intI1 in crop samples whereas the air humidity and soil electrical conductivity (EC) promotes the ARGs and intI1. So that the climate condition of semi-arid regions significantly affects the abundance of ARGs and intI1 in crop samples. The results suggest that treated wastewater might be safely reused in agricultural practice in semi-arid regions without a significant increase of potential health risks associated with ARGs transfer to the food chain. However, further research is needed for understanding and managing ARGs transfer from the agricultural ecosystem to humans through the food chain.

Several studies highlighted the ubiquitous presence of ibuprofen and aluminum in the aquatic environment around the world and demonstrated their potential to induce embryotoxic and teratogenic defects on aquatic species individually. Although studies that evaluate developmental alterations induced by mixtures of these pollutants are scarce; and, since environmental contamination presented in the form of a mixture of toxicants with different chemical properties and toxicity mechanisms capable of generating interactions; the objective of this study was to evaluate the developmental defects, teratogenic alterations, and oxidative stress induced by individual forms and the mixture of ibuprofen (IBU) and aluminum (Al) on zebrafish embryos. Oocytes exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of IBU (0.1–20 μg L-1) and Al (0.01–8 mg L-1) and one binary mixture. The LC50 and EC50 were obtained to calculate the teratogenic index (TI). The IBU LC50, EC50, and TI were 8.06 μg L-1, 2.85 μg L-1 and 2.82. In contrast, Al LC50 was 5.0 mg L-1with an EC50 of 3.58 mg L-1 and TI of 1.39. The main alterations observed for individual compounds were hatching alterations, head malformation, skeletal deformities, hypopigmentation, pericardial edema, and heart rate impairment. The mixture also showed significant delays to embryonic development. Moreover, oxidative stress biomarkers of cellular oxidation and antioxidant defenses at 72 and 96 hpf significantly increased. Results show that environmentally relevant concentrations of ibuprofen (IBU), aluminum (Al), and their mixture promote a series of developmental defects, teratogenic effects, and oxidative disruption on D. rerio embryos, and the interaction of both substances altered the response. In conclusion, morphological and biochemical tests are suitable tools for assessing the health risk of aquatic wildlife by exposure to individual and mixed pollutants in freshwater bodies.

The present research is mainly focusing on the characterization of X-ray developer solution and its toxic tolerance studies with Desmodesmus armatus towards the phycoremediation studies for removal of pollutants, silver, and concomitant lipid production. The characterization results suggested the presence of 1.229 ± 0.004 g/l BOD, 27.29 ± 0.230 g/l COD with a silver content of 0.01791 ± 0.000 g/l. The tolerance and toxicity limits of with X-ray developer solution reveals the remarkable growth of microalgae in 3:1.dilution ratio of BBM in the X-ray developer solutions. The phycoremediation with 19 days period shown the noticeable results with a relative BOD (20.86%), COD (13.88%), with 57.10% corresponding total phosphorous removal. The phycoremediation also has proven better relative silver removal potential of 44.06% on the 19th day with concomitant 1.392% lipid production. Overall, the present study shows the potential phycoremediation strategy of hazardous X-ray developer solutions with possible concurrent lipid production through a sustainable approach.

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) have become the most widely used insecticides in the world. However, information on the NEO concentrations in tap water based on nationwide surveys is limited in China. In this study, the levels of six NEOs were measured in tap water samples collected from 38 cities in China. Across all sampling locations, the overall frequency of detection for at least one NEO was 100%, indicating that NEOs are ubiquitous in tap water from China. Imidacloprid was the most abundant NEO (median: 7.59 ng/L), followed by (in decreasing order) clothianidin (5.46 ng/L), dinotefuran (4.55 ng/L), thiamethoxam (4.50 ng/L), acetamiprid (2.72 ng/L), and thiacloprid (0.38 ng/L). Significantly positive correlations (r = 0.655–0.902, p < 0.001) among all pairs of NEOs were observed, which showed that the sources of NEOs in tap water were common or related. Across all sampling locations, regional differences in concentrations (ΣNEOs; sum of six NEOs varied from 0.79 ng/L to 415 ng/L) were observed within China, showing an increasing trend from northern to southern China. Although the estimated daily intake of NEOs were much lower than the reference dose, the potential health risk of NEOs via tap water consumption should raise more public concern considering the high detection rates of NEOs in tap water.

Public concern over the health implications of antimicrobials employed in aquaculture has resulted in adoption of strict regulations for their use. This study employed a high-throughput protocol covering 86 compounds in six pharmaceutical groups to screen feed and sediments from 20 tilapia ponds randomly in 18 farms of an aquacultural unit in southern China, one of important tilapia fillet suppliers in the world. Seventeen samples of commercial feeds from manufacturer-sealed bags in the farms were tetracyclines-free but not antibiotic-free. All the sealed-bag feeds contained quinolones and two feeds had sulfonamides (up to 140 μg kg⁻¹). Meanwhile, seven leftover-feeds in opened bags contained added antimicrobials: tetracyclines (570–2790 μg kg⁻¹) in all and florfenicol (20–294 μg kg⁻¹) in four. All the feeds regardless sealed or not had large amounts (221–2642 μg kg⁻¹) of salicylic acid (possible antimicrobial substitute) and caffeine, and one sealed-bag feed even was quantified with medroxyprogesterone. Surface sediments (0–10 cm) from the ponds were detected with 36 compounds and sublayer sediments (10–20) with 8 compounds. Large amounts of salicylic acid were present in both surface and sublayer sediments accounting up to 10% of total pharmaceutical residues. Surface sediments were dominated by antibiotics (5.2–172 μg kg⁻¹), mainly sulfonamides and quinolones, contributing 68% of the total quantitative compound mass. Sublayer sediments were also enriched in quinolones (up to 260 μg kg⁻¹). Surprisingly, all sediments contained progesterone (up to 8.0 μg kg⁻¹) in coincidence to the feed with medroxyprogesterone, perhaps arising from endocrine abuses or cross-contamination. Although high levels of other pharmacologic residues (caffeine) in sediment posed greater than medium ecological risks, antibiotic residues contributed only 2–35% to the risk. These findings suggest that antibiotic-free feed may be insufficient to control antibiotic abuse in aquaculture and that additional regulatory actions may be necessary, such as veterinary prescription as human antibiotic uses.

Stormflow runoff is the most important agent for phosphorus (P) input to reservoirs, as the particulates contained in runoff carry a substantial amount of P. The settling process of particulates affects the P content of water, and the distribution of particulates determines the P distribution in reservoir sediment. An understanding of flood impacts on the transport, transition, and accumulation of P in a reservoir is critical to reservoir management. In this study, water samples before and after flooding and sediment samples after flooding were collected from Biliuhe Reservoir in Northeast China. P content and load in the water and P-fractions and particle sizes of the sediments were analyzed. Results showed that total particulate P (TPP) increased sharply from 1.56 to 26.72 t after flooding, whereas dissolved organic P (DOP) decreased markedly from 3.24 to 1.17 t, which was largely caused by biological uptake directly or indirectly before flooding. Orthophosphate (PO43−) shared a similar trend with TPP, indicating that PO43− could be adsorbed onto settling particulates, helping to reduce the reactive P introduced by flooding. Reservoir sediment showed a fining trend downstream and the clay fraction exhibited an obvious correlation with P-fractions, demonstrating that the distribution of particulate matter determined P distribution in the sediment. This study also found that particulates from the largest tributary (Biliu River) were only minimally transported from its reservoir entrance to the dam because of a longer travel distance, while contrastingly, particulates from a smaller tributary (Bajia River) were maximally carried to the dam because of a shorter distance. Our fundings suggests that surface water in the reservoir should be released prior to flooding in order to mitigate control of P in the water, moreover, it is necessary to strengthen the effectiveness of pollutant control projects at the reservoir entrance of the Bajia River.

Mining-related activities in the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR) are known to emit polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and related compounds to ambient air. This is a concern due to the toxicity of PAHs, including their transformation products such as nitrated (NPAHs) and oxygenated (OPAHs) PAHs. This is the first study that provided a more extensive outlook into the sources, occurrence in air, and spatial and seasonal patterns of NPAHs and OPAHs in the AOSR by using passive air sampling. A sampling campaign from 2013 to 2016 revealed concentrations of NPAHs that were much lower than those of OPAHs. The highest concentrations of NPAHs were concentrated in the region associated with extensive mining activities, with ∑NPAH concentrations ranging from 20 to 250 pg/m³. Within the oil sands (OS) mineable area, NPAHs associated with primary release appear more commonly, while NPAHs produced via oxidative transformation are predominant outside of this area. The concentrations of ∑OPAH ranged from 400 to 2400 pg/m³, with the highest air concentrations in the region located south of the main OS activity zone, with peak concentrations attributed to a 2016 forest fire event. Uptake of PAHs from ambient air and their subsequent conversion to generate OPAHs is believed to play an important role in wildfire emissions of OPAHs. The seasonal trend investigation was inconclusive, with NPAHs slightly higher during the winter, while OPAHs were slightly elevated during summer. A preliminary comparison of ambient concentrations of OPAHs and NPAHs in the AOSR to measurements in the Greater Toronto Area revealed a similar range of concentrations, but also a unique presence of certain NPAHs such as 4-nitrobiphenyl, 2-nitrodibenzothiophene, 2,8-dinitrodibenzothiophene and 6-nitrobenzo-(a)-pyrene. This indicates that AOSR might have its own NPAH profile – creating the need to better understand associated NPAH toxicity and propensity for long range transport.

The phytoplankton community can be affected by multiple environmental factors such as climate, meteorology, hydrology, nutrients, and grazing. The complex interactive effects of these environmental factors as well as the resilience of phytoplankton communities further make the prediction of phytoplankton communities’ dynamics challenging. In this study, we analyzed multiple environmental factors and their relative importance in predicting both phytoplankton shifting and cyanobacteria abundance in two regulated shallow lakes in central China. Our results indicated that the phytoplankton community in the study areas could be mainly classified into 1. Cryptophyta dominated group, 2. Biologically diverse group, and 3. Cyanobacteria dominated group. The Multinomial Logistic Regression model indicated the Cryptophyta dominated group was sensitive to temperature, while other groups were sensitive to both temperature and nutrients. The interactive effects of temperature and nutrients were synergistic in the cyanobacteria dominated group, while they were antagonistic or minor in other groups. The Negative Binomial Regression model suggested high total phosphorus and low total nitrogen but not temperature were responsible for high cyanobacteria abundance. The conditional plot indicated nutrients affected cyanobacteria abundance more significantly under low wind speeds and lake volume fluctuations, and cyanobacteria abundance in the cyanobacteria dominated group maintained high levels with increasing hydrological dynamics. Our results demonstrated that environmental factors played inconsistently significant roles in different phytoplankton groups, and reducing nutrients could decrease adverse effects of warming and water project constructions. Our models can also be applied to forecast phytoplankton shifting and cyanobacteria abundance in the management of regulated shallow lakes.

Urban horticulture (UH) has been proposed as a solution to increase urban sustainability, but the potential risks to human health due to potentially elevated soil heavy metals and metalloids (HM) concentrations represent a major constraint for UH expansion. Here we provide the first UK-wide assessment of soil HM concentrations (total and bioavailable) in UH soils and the factors influencing their bioavailability to crops. Soils from 200 allotments across ten cities in the UK were collected and analysed for HM concentrations, black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) concentrations, pH and texture. We found that although HM are widespread across UK UH soils, most concentrations fell below the respective UK soil screening values (C4SLs): 99 % Cr; 98 % As, Cd, Ni; 95 % Cu; 52 % Zn. However, 83 % of Pb concentrations exceeded C4SL, but only 3.5 % were above Pb national background concentration of 820 mg kg⁻¹. The bioavailable HM concentrations represent a small fraction (0.01–1.8 %) of the total concentrations even for those soils that exceeded C4SLs. There was a significant positive relationship between both total and bioavailable HM and soil BC and OC concentrations. This suggest that while contributing to the accumulation of HM concentrations in UH soils, BC and OC may also provide a biding surface for the bioavailable HM concentrations contributing to their immobilisation. These findings have implications for both management of the risk to human health associated with UH growing in urban soils and with management of UH soil. There is a clear need to understand the mechanisms driving soil-to-crop HM transfer in UH to improve potentially restrictive C4SL (e.g. Pb) especially as public demand for UH land is growing. In addition, the UH community would benefit from education programs promoting soil management practices that reduce the risk of HM exposure - particularly in those plots where C4SLs were exceeded.
