Effects of Surface Active Additives on the Enzymatic Treatment of Phenol and Its Derivatives: a Mini Review Texto completo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Phenolic wastewaters represent a serious health and environmental problem. The remediation of phenolic wastewaters using oxidoreductase enzymes has emerged as an attractive environmentally friendly treatment method. However, the loss of enzyme activity during the treatment remains a key limitation. Thus, the aim of this article is to review and assess the recent progress in utilizing surface active additives (i.e., polymers, biopolymers, surfactants, and biosurfactants) for the reduction of enzyme inhibition and, thus, the enhancement of enzymatic remediation of phenolic wastewaters. RECENT FINDINGS: The reported effect of polymeric and surfactant additives on the enzymatic remediation of phenolic pollutants is mixed. Some studies reported significant enhancements while others demonstrated minimal or no gains. More seriously, it has been reported that these fossil-based additives might lead to a higher toxicity of the treated wastewaters. Bio-based (biopolymers and biosurfactants) additives might address this toxicity issue; however, the bio-based additives are not always as effective as the fossil-based ones. Despite the beneficial effect, with some exceptions, of additives, the enhancement level varies widely, probably due to the variations in the reaction environment. Thus, to draw meaningful and reliable conclusions on which additive(s) is more promising, thorough studies under unified conditions are needed. Additionally, generation of secondary pollutions associated with the fossil-based additives urges the replacement of such additives with bio-based ones. However, the effectiveness of the bio-based additives is still not sufficiently documented, stressing the need for more in-depth studies.

We explored the possibility that an underground pathway, “submarine groundwater discharge” (SGD), may contribute to the observed coastal contamination from a large industrial complex on the Gulf of Thailand. Three surveys were performed to map the area for the natural groundwater tracers radon, thoron and salinity. The results from all three surveys were internally consistent showing a point source adjacent to a large pier that serves the complex. It may be that a piling, driven into the ground to support the pier, intercepted a shallow aquifer and this resulted in an underground pathway between land and sea. Some low-density sediments are enriched in radium, we suspect from fly ash from a nearby power plant. Water quality parameters showed that total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) correlated strongly to nitrite, dissolved inorganic phosphate and silica, indicating a common source. Data analysis shows that diffuse seepage accounts for more discharge than the point source.

Ocean-going ships are mostly driven by high‑sulfur heavy fuel oil, which poses public health and environmental concerns. Emission control areas (ECA) have been developed for the regulatory control of the sulfur content in fuel. We tracked 28 sample vessels that entered and exited Shanghai Port, to understand how air pollutants, including oxysulfides (SOx), nitric oxide (NOx), and particulate matter smaller than 10 μm (PM₁₀), would change under the ECA regulations. Emission reductions vary with the types and sizes of the ships. In our sample pool, oil/chemical tankers and container ships have the highest decline rates of SOx emissions at 26.8%–56.4% and 17.4%–56.6%, respectively. Cruise ships, container ships, and liquefied gas carriers occupy the highest share ratios of pollutant emissions in the sample pool because of the higher average gross tonnage and correspondingly higher-rated power of the ships' main engines. As expected, SOx and PM₁₀ emissions under hoteling conditions (operations while stationary at dock) can be considerably reduced by switching to low-sulfur fuel. Using fuel with the much lower sulfur content of 0.1% m/m in the ECA, the SOx and PM₁₀ emissions of our sample pool could be reduced considerably by up to 94.4% and 78.3%, respectively, compared to the 0.5% m/m sulfur content used during ship hoteling.

Concentrations, spatial distribution and sources of aliphatic hydrocarbons (AH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in surface seawater of the Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic. This area is one of the most industrialized and urbanized areas in the northern Adriatic with intense maritime traffic. The surface seawater samples were collected at 31 sites and total hydrocarbon concentrations were determined. In general, concentrations (0.1 to 43.2 μg l⁻¹, mean 4.8 μg l⁻¹, Chrysene equivalents) were higher in summer. Concentrations of total aliphatic hydrocarbons were from 17.2 to 2326.5 μg l⁻¹ (mean 543.3 μg l⁻¹). The major component was the unresolved complex mixture (UCM), comprising from 78% to 97% of the total aliphatic hydrocarbons. Total PAH concentrations varied from 89 ng l⁻¹ to 294 ng l⁻¹ (mean 179 ng l⁻¹). The most contaminated sites were the marina of San Giusto and the municipal harbor of Piran.Different evaluation indeces were applied to determine the origin of hydrocarbons. The prevailing origin of aliphatic hydrocarbons is petrogenic, with the significant contribution of the biogenic at some sites. The results presented indicate the fresh inputs of hydrocarbons, which are subject to intense degradation processes. The PAH group profile showed the predominance of 2–3 ring PAHs. PAHs were of mixed origin with more pronounced petrogenic origin, presumably due to oil spills from ships and boats. The presence of a relatively high content of perylene in seawater is an indication of its terrestrial input.According to the presented results and compared to results from different areas worldwide, the seawater in the Gulf of Trieste can still be considered slightly to moderately polluted with PAHs.

Antibiotic resistance has become an important focus of research in the aquaculture environment. However, few studies have evaluated antibiotic resistance during the seedling period in marine fish cage-culture areas. In this study, culture-dependent methods and quantitative polymerase chain reaction were used to identify and detect cultivable heterotrophic antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), respectively, during the seedling period in a marine fish cage-culture areas of Hainan, China. Bacterial resistance to amoxicillin, erythromycin, and gentamicin was generally high (average on 27.67%, 23.61% and 37.32%, respectively), whereas resistance to furazolidone and nitrofurantoin was generally low (average on 0.14% and 7.425%). Alteromonas (32.72%) and Vibrio (24.77%) were the dominant genus of ARB. Most ARB were opportunistic pathogens, belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria (96.02%). The abundance of sul family genes was higher than that of tet family genes. Overall, the abundance of ARGs and the resistance rates in HW was highest.

Ocean acidification (OA) has potential to affect marine phytoplankton in ways that are partly understood, but there is less knowledge about how it may alter the coupling to secondary producers. We investigated the effects of OA on phytoplankton primary production, and its trophic transfer to zooplankton in a subtropical eutrophic water (Wuyuan Bay, China) under present day (400 μatm) and projected end-of-century (1000 μatm) pCO2 levels. Net primary production was unaffected, although OA did lead to small decreases in growth rates. OA had no measurable effect on micro-/mesozooplankton grazing rates. Elevated pCO2 had no effect on phytoplankton fatty acid (FA) concentrations during exponential phase, but saturated FAs increased relative to the control during declining phase. FA profiles of mesozooplankton were unaffected. Our findings show that short-term exposure of plankton communities in eutrophic subtropical waters to projected end-of-century OA conditions has little effect on primary productivity and trophic linkage to mesozooplankton.

Plastic pollution is a major ecological catastrophe that endangers vulnerable species. Small plastic fragments and filaments enter the food web in the ocean threatening marine species health. Here microplastics between 0.5 and 5 mm were quantified from eight beaches of southwest Bay of Biscay (Spain) within Natura-2000 Special Protection Areas for birds. Sand samples were taken using a randomized quadrat-based protocol. Between 145 and 382 particles per kg of dry sand were found, which is relatively high in comparison with other European beaches. Microfibers were more abundant than microplastics. PERMANOVA revealed a significant effect of the beach location (inside versus outside the estuary). Open beaches contained a higher microplastic density than sheltered ones suggesting that many beached microplastics come from the ocean. Birds are at risk in the studied protected spaces as revealed from high concentrations of fibres in depositions of European shag and gulls.

The distribution of floating litter in marine waters, influenced by currents and wind drag, often determines the dispersal of its encrusting fauna. In the present paper, we observed for the first time the colonization of rafting floats from abandoned, lost or derelict fishing gears (ALDFG) by the four protected deep-sea species: Errina aspera, Desmophyllum pertusum, Madrepora oculata Pachylasma giganteum.Overall, 41 floats, colonized by deep benthic species, were found stranded on the shore of the Sicilian coast of the Strait of Messina, between 2016 and 2019. Species composition, number and occurrence of colonizing organisms were analyzed. On the basis of the species composition (the association between E. aspera, P. giganteum and Megabalanus tulipiformis), the knowledge on their ecology, biogeography, path of local currents, it was possible to define that the area of origin of the most part of these fishing net floats was the Strait of Messina.

Beach accumulation surveys can be used as a proxy to estimate litter flows into the marine environment. However, litter loads can be influenced by various factors including catchment area characteristics, weather conditions and ocean water movements. This complexity is evidenced by the results of five beach surveys conducted in Cape Town in 2017. Observed average litter accumulation rates across the beaches ranged from 36 to 2961 items·day⁻¹·100 m⁻¹. Item mass ranged from 0.01–367 g, with items weighing <1 g contributing 61–85% of count. Plastic items accounted for 94.5–98.9% of total count and this prevalence appears to have increased relative to older data (1989–1994). The top ten identifiable items accounted for 40–57% of plastic debris. Nine of these were associated with foods commonly consumed on-the-go, including polystyrene packaging, snack packets and straws. A mitigation approach focused on these items may address one third to one half of marine litter sources in Cape Town.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a molecular pump, responsible for extruding xenobiotics. The aim of the study was to demonstrate the role of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in cadmium (Cd) exhaustion. The activity of P-gp was regulated in Crassostrea gigas, which was previously exposed to Cd by using rifampicin (inducer) and verapamil (inhibitor), respectively. Comparing with Crassostrea gigas depurated in natural seawater, Cd content increased significantly from 14.28 mg/kg dw to 17.49 mg/kg dw accompanied by a changed metallothionein level from 9.84 μg/g fw to 10.67 μg/g fw after 25 μg/L verapamil treatment, while Cd content after 25 μg/L rifampicin treatment reduced to 12.21 mg/kg dw. Moreover, after treatment with rifampicin and verapamil, beneficial metal elements, fats, and proteins were maintained, and the tissue-dependent difference was found in the variation of antioxidant defenses and oxidative damage in Crassostrea gigas. In brief, the study provided new evidence on possibility of Cd removal by inducing P-glycoprotein.
