Occurrence of quinolones in cultured fish from Shandong Province, China and their health risk assessment

The residue levels of 6 quinolones in 160 cultured fish samples from Shandong Province, China were investigated using UPLC-MS/MS. The detection rate was 43.1% and enrofloxacin had the highest detection rate as well as the highest residue concentration. The violation rates were 2.50% for the sum of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin and 1.25% for ofloxacin. Among the 9 fish species, quinolone contamination problems should receive more attention in Carp, Grass carp, Crucian and Catfish. The health risk assessment showed that when calculated by the maximum concentration, the estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of Carp, Grass carp and Crucian for the high consumption group accounted for more than 10% of the acceptable daily intakes (ADIs), indicating that a large intake of these fish species might pose a potential health risk and health risk monitoring of quinolones in cultured fish should be continually performed.

We report lead (Pb) analyses in juvenile (n = 37; mean length = 24.7 ± 2.3 cm) and adult (n = 16; mean length = 52.3 ± 9.3 cm) Centroscymnus coelolepis Mediterranean deep-sea sharks that are compared to Pb content in bathy-demersal, pelagic and shallow coastal sharks. Median Pb concentrations of C. coelolepis muscle (0.009–0.056 wet ppm) and liver (0.023–0.061 wet ppm) are among the lowest encountered in shark records. Stable Pb isotope imprints in adult C. coelolepis muscles highlight that most of Pb in C. coelolepis is from human origin. Lead isotopes reveal the persistence of gasoline Pb emitted in the 1970s in low-turnover adult shark's muscle while associated liver imprints are in equilibrium with recent pollutant Pb signatures suggesting an efficient pollutant Pb turnover metabolism. The comparison of Pb distribution between adult and juvenile cohorts suggests the role of dietary exposure and possible maternal offloading of Pb during gestation, likely associated to vitellogenesis in this aplacental viviparous deep-sea shark.

Anthropogenic nutrient pollution has been identified as one of the key stressors of coastal ecosystems. However, the paucity of long-term nutrient records limits our understanding of both the extent of nutrient pollution as well as of the ecological impacts. Here, using coral skeletal phosphorus (P/Ca), we reconstructed a half-a-century record of seawater phosphate at Port Dickson, Malaysia. The P/Ca in the coral revealed an up to 8-fold increase in coral P/Ca from the late 1970s to 2000s, likely linked to increases in fertilizer use (R² = 0.47) and variabilities in rainfall (R² = 0.17). The rise in coral P/Ca in coincided with a contemporaneous 18 % decrease in coral skeletal density, suggesting phosphate enrichment may impact the growth and structural integrity of reef-building corals. Given the importance of both agriculture and heavy reliance on coral reefs by populations in Southeast Asia, our study highlights continue the need to develop environmental management upstream of coastal zones.

Recreational boating is a leisure and sports activity that has aroused growing interest among users, tourists, and the general public. However, in the last decade, a problem has arisen concerning the abandonment of recreational boats. It is a problem that has become even more acute in times of economic recession. It is, therefore, necessary to find an urgent solution in order to reduce potential environmental risks. This work aims to analyze the state of the question through bibliometrics to know which topics are trending and contrast these findings with a Delphi analysis. The main results focus on the need for greater agility in the court adjudication process and the need for a specific legal framework for the scrapping of recreational craft. In conclusion, it is vital to integrate the circular economy into shipbuilding and scrapping processes to ensure the sustainability of the sector and the environment.

The oil spill that reached Brazilian Coast in 2019 was one of the most extensive disasters and its effects on distinct species are still under investigation. This study evaluated the effects of the oil spill on the crab Pachygrapsus transversus in four reef areas in Northeast of Brazil that are also under different levels of chronic anthropogenic impacts. Changes in population aspects were investigated including maturity, sex ratio, and relative growth considering periods before and after the oil spill. An acute decrease in the number of females captured in areas most affected by oil spill was evident and may be associated with the closure of burrows used for protection. Crabs from the most touristic area presented a decrease in the medium size of carapace and maturation compared to crabs from other less visited areas, which highlights the importance of studying the effects of impacts on marine fauna.

Metal contamination has never been assessed in Ampullae of Lorenzini. This study employed Rhizoprionodon lalandii, as an ecotoxicological model to investigate potential metal accumulation in Ampullae of Lorenzini jelly. No differences between sexes were observed regarding jelly metal concentrations at Rio das Ostras (RJ) or Santos (SP). Statistically significant correlations were noted between total lengths (TL) and condition factors and several metals at both sampling sites, demonstrating the potential for Chondrichthyan sensory capacity disruption and possible effects on foraging success. Maternal metal transfer to Ampullae jelly was confirmed. Rhizoprionodon lalandii is thus, a good model to assess Ampullae of Lorenzini contamination, as this electrosensory organ seems to be highly vulnerable to metal contamination.

In the Bay of Biscay, regional monitoring programmes and data on abundance and distribution of floating marine litter are scarce, contrary to many other European marine regions. Here, a joint analysis of multiyear observations (2017–2019) of floating micro and macrolitter and oceanographic conditions was conducted for the Bay of Biscay by combining microlitter samplings with neuston nets and vessel-based macrolitter observations. Results show spatiotemporal abundance and distribution patterns. The density of floating microlitter increased from 26,056 items/km² in 2017 to 1,802,4611 items/km² in 2019; floating macrolitter densities barely varied amongst year (2.52 items/km² in 2017 and 3.70 items/km² in 2019). No significant correlation was found between densities of micro and macrolitter, neither for the oceanographic variables. We conclude that longer micro and macrolitter monitoring periods and standardized datasets based on the cross-border cooperation are needed to collect more comparable information, evaluate trends, and support decision making in the area.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been demonstrated to participate in plant growth and development as well as response to different biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the knowledge of lncRNA was limited in microalgae. In this study, by RNA deep sequencing, 134 lncRNAs were identified in marine Nannochloropsis oceanica in response to carbon dioxide fluctuation. Among them, there were 51 lncRNAs displayed differentially expressed between low and high CO₂ treatments, including 33 upregulation and 18 downregulation lncRNAs. Cellulose metabolic process, glucan metabolic process, polysaccharide metabolic process, and transmembrane transporter activity were functionally enriched. Multiple potential target genes of lncRNA and lncRNA-mRNA co-located gene network were analyzed. Subsequent analysis had demonstrated that lncRNAs would participate in many biological molecular processes, including gene expression, transcriptional regulation, protein expression and epigenetic regulation. In addition, alternative splicing events were firstly analyzed in response to CO₂ fluctuation. There were 2051 alternative splicing (AS events) identified, which might be associated with lncRNA. These observations will provide a novel insight into lncRNA function in Nannochloropsis and provide a series of targets for lncRNA-based gene editing in future.

Release from the sediment is an important nutrient source to the water column of global oceans, especially for marginal seas with active biogeochemical processes. Benthic nutrient biogeochemistry and its responses to environmental changes were investigated in the eastern marginal seas of China using a two-layer diffusion-advection-reaction diagenetic model. Overall, the sediment represented the primary nutrient source with fluxes of ~−342 ± 197, −1.25 ± 0.50, and −114 ± 56 × 10⁸ mol/month for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate, and silicate, respectively. This could contribute up to ~42% of nutrients requested by primary production (PP), with a DIN/SiO₃²⁻/PO₄³⁻ molar ratio of 273:91:1, which was higher than that in the overlying water (49:47:1). Future benthic nutrient fluxes were predicted under two environmental change scenarios (increasing and decreasing PP and biogenic silica). Our study may help rebuild nutrient budgets in the future and formulate environmental management policies in marginal seas.

Marine debris, directly and indirectly, threatens marine habitat and biota. Fishing activity is generally recognised as a contributor to marine debris, but the relative input from recreational fishing remains unassessed. Here we provide the first comprehensive literature review of recreational fishing marine debris (RFMD) on a global scale. A systematic literature review identified 70 studies related to RFMD, and plastic and metal respectively were the dominant debris materials found. Nearshore coastal areas and reefs, acted as both sources and sinks of RFMD and a diverse suite of potential impacts such as ghost fishing and entanglement were identified at local scales. Overall, research of RFMD is lacking globally, however, its role in marine debris input is likely underestimated. We recommend more research on the volumes and risks, using a standardised classification approach. Where intervention is required, we suggest cooperative approaches between the sector and authorities.
