Plastic comprises of variety of polymers and has many applications, but the waste generated by plastic pose threat to environment and marine life. Plastic can be classified into two types: thermoplastics and thermosetting and are divided into 7 different categories: (Polyethylene Terephthalate [PETE], High-Density Polyethylene [HDPE], Polyvinyl Chloride [PVC], Low-Density Polyethylene [LDPE], Polypropylene [PP], Polystyrene or Styrofoam [PS] & Polycarbonate or ABS [others]). To curb the deleterious effects of plastic waste various methods have been devised and utilized that include chemical, physical and biological treatments. One of the aspects primarily focused by the researchers is the phenomenon of biodegradation and there are many microorganisms (bacteria) that have the ability to carry out this particular process. These bacteria assist biodegradation by production of several enzymes like PETases and MHETases. There are few microorganisms that have been listed which cannot be applied for industrial use due to its low biodegradation capacity. To overcome this problem, PHA is one of the alternatives to replace the synthetic plastic due to its high degrading capacity.

In this study we analysed total mercury (THg) levels in European hake (Merluccius merluccius) – an ecologically and commercially important species throughout the Mediterranean – caught in the northern and central Adriatic Sea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluating THg levels in hake fillets in relation to ecological (season) and biological (body size, sex, sexual maturity, lipid content) parameters. THg levels in muscle showed no sex-related differences; in contrast, significant season-related differences were found in females, with higher levels in spring-summer compared with autumn-winter. No season-related differences were seen in males. A significant sex effect was found for body size and sexual maturity. Females showed a correlation between THg level and length, THg being significantly higher in mature compared with immature specimens. No significant sex effect was found for muscle lipid content, because a correlation between THg concentration and tissue lipids was found in both sexes. Since the mean THg concentration found in M. merluccius fillets (0.64 ± 0.29 mg kg⁻¹ dry weight; range, 0.20–1.53) was consistently under the level set by EU regulations, this study demonstrates that European hake caught in the northern and central Adriatic is safe for human consumption.

The status of contamination by chemical pollutants on large filter feeding sharks is still largely unknown. This study investigated for the first time the presence of legacy, emerging contaminants and trace elements in multiple tissues of basking sharks. In general, skin showed higher concentration of legacy and emerging contaminants probably due to pollutants being adsorbed onto the dermal denticles of the skin rather than accumulated in the tissue itself. Contaminants measured in both subcutaneous tissue and muscles appeared to strongly correlate with each other, indicating that the former might be a good proxy of muscle contamination in basking sharks. Considering the migratory nature of this species, longevity and feeding ecology, this species represents the perfect candidate to act as early warning bioindicator of regional contamination. In this context, non-lethal subcutaneous biopsies could allow the early detection of any temporal variation in the bioaccumulation of pollutants in the Mediterranean Sea.

Although the simplification of multivariate histopathological data into univariate indices can be useful for the assessment of environmental quality, this implies a great loss of information. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness, in the context of environmental quality assessment, of an approach that integrates individual histopathological responses in a discriminated manner with the results of contaminants by means of multivariate analyses. This analysis was compared to the diagnosis of environmental quality provided by the use of the univariate Bernet histopathological index. Contaminant loads (sediments and fish) and the liver histopathology of Cathorops spixii were integrated through multivariate analysis. Integrated individual histopathological responses allowed classifying environmental quality from more to less impacted sites, while the univariate index showed some inconsistencies with chemical loads and allowed identifying only the most impacted site.

This study is the first attempt to provide original data on plastics debris occurrence in beach sediments of the Gulf of Skikda in Algeria (southwestern Mediterranean). Sediment samples from seven beaches were collected to extract, quantify and characterize mesoplastics and microplastics. Particles were classified by size into mesoplastics (5–25 mm) and large microplastics (1–5 mm). Overall, microplastics were the most abundant size fraction in terms of number of items. The average mass of mesoplastics was twice that of microplastics, revealing a notable reservoir of plastics that is scarcely ever reported in the literature. The predominant types were fragments and pellets, white/transparent in color. The average concentrations of total plastic were 1067.19 ± 625.62 items/m², 106.98 ± 62.39 items/kg, and 50.65 ± 9.82 g/m², showing variability between beaches and within sampling sites. Thus, the Skikda coast has high levels of pollution compared to other areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

This study aims to evaluate the seasonal and spatial characteristics of hydrochemistry and DO isotopes and identify the eco-environmental threats under the background of saline intrusion and human activities in Yellow River Delta (YRD). Analyses for major ions (i.e., K⁺, Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, SO₄²⁻, HCO₃⁻ and Cl⁻), nitrate ion (NO₃⁻) and isotopic composition are performed for precipitation, river water, wetland water and sea water. Based on the range of δ²H and δ¹⁸O as well as their relations, the mixing between multiple sources and evaporation are confirmed. Electrical conductivity (EC), concentration of NO₃⁻, soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and magnesium hazard (MH) are employed as indicators to reflect the ecological risks from salinity, agricultural pollutants, sodium and magnesium. By hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), the samples of wetland water are grouped associated with those of river water. The characteristic reflects 3 patterns of risks in wetlands, including saline intrusion, human activities and their mixed influence.

Release of petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants poses a serious problem to the terrestrial as well as marine ecosystem. This study investigated and compared the potency of different biodegradation strategies for mitigating total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) of petroleum refinery sludge by an integrated action of bioaugmentation and biostimulation vis-à-vis separate bioaugmentation and biostimulation approaches. The implementation of a concomitant bioaugmentation-biostimulation strategy (BABSS) involving the indigenously developed bacterial consortium and poultry litter extract showed the best performance by mitigating the TPH up to 90.3 ± 3.7% in 21 days. The GC-FID analysis confirmed the efficacy of different TPH degradation strategies. The kinetic study of TPH degradation of BABSS resulted first-order with rate 0.11 day⁻¹. Thus, the BABSS proved to be more efficient in degrading TPH in an eco-friendly manner and hence, may pave the way for better management of petroleum hydrocarbon pollutants, while providing a sustainable solution to the disposal of poultry wastes.

Estuaries experience variable physicochemical conditions, especially after hurricanes and due to anthropogenic sources of pollution. Their microbial communities are not as well understood in terms of community structure and diversity, particularly in response to stresses from pollution and severe events. This study presents a 16S rRNA-based description of sediment microbial communities in the Houston Ship Channel-Galveston Bay estuary after Hurricane Harvey in 2017. A total of 11 sites were sampled, and microbial genomic DNA was isolated from sediment. The presence and abundance of specific bacterial and archaeal taxa in the sediment indicated pollutant inputs from identified legacy sources. The abundance of certain microbial groups was explained by the mobilization of contaminated sediment and sediment transport due to Harvey. Several microorganisms involved in the biodegradation of xenobiotics were observed. The spatial occurrence of Dehalococcoidia, a degrader of persistent polychlorinated compounds, was explained in relation to sediment properties and contaminant concentrations.

So far, the adverse effects of excess Fe in shrimp have been ignored for years as it was thought that extra Fe supplementation was not needed in the practical diets. Nowadays, Fe concentration in commercial shrimp feed from feed enterprises could be around 301.34–545.5 mg/kg, which is mainly due to the fish meal containing up to 1500 mg/kg Fe. Therefore, the purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of Fe supplementation on the growth performance, tissue Fe deposition, hepatopancreas lipid metabolism, intestinal function in L. vannamei. The results showed that although growth performance was not influenced by the dietary Fe supplementation, excess Fe supplementation (955.00 mg/kg) significantly increased hepatopancreas Fe deposition and induced lipolysis. Moreover, excess Fe supplementation impaired intestinal immune function and disrupted microbiota homeostasis. These findings might provide partial theoretical evidence for the effect of dietary Fe supplementation on physiological metabolism in L. vannamei.

Penguins accumulate mercury due to their long-life span together with their high trophic position. We sampled adult and juveniles' feathers from three colonies of Spheniscus magellanicus from Tierra del Fuego along an inshore-offshore corridor. We integrated toxicological information (mercury concentrations) and foraging biomarkers (δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N) into a common data analysis framework (isotopic niche analysis) to evaluate the influence of age, location, and foraging behaviors on mercury concentrations. Adults had higher feather mercury concentrations, δ¹³C, and δ¹⁵N values compared to juveniles. Also, adult and juvenile feather mercury concentrations differed between colonies, with lower mercury concentrations at the nearest inshore colony relative to the farther offshore colonies. Trophic position and the isotopic niche analyses suggest that this geographic gradient in mercury concentrations is due to differences in colonies' foraging areas. Understanding penguins' exposure to mercury derived from local food webs is a crucial first step in evaluating the impacts of this heavy metal on their conservation status.
