Cluster analysis applied to CO2 concentrations at a rural site Texto completo

In rural environments, atmospheric CO₂ is mainly controlled by natural processes such as respiration-photosynthesis or low atmosphere evolution. This paper considers atmospheric CO₂ measurements obtained at a rural site during 2011 using the wavelength-scanned cavity ringdown spectroscopy technique and presents two clustering methods, the silhouette being calculated to evaluate procedure validity. In the first method, clusters were formed depending on the similarity of wind roses, with satisfactory silhouette values. An anticyclonic rotation of the wind direction was observed during the daily cycle and clusters were formed by consecutive directions following the mixing layer evolution. However, monthly roses revealed four quite different wind directions, mainly oriented in the E-W axis. Although CO₂ was not used in this procedure, a successful link between clusters and CO₂ was obtained. In the second procedure, clusters were formed by the similarity of CO₂ histograms calculated in intervals of one or two ancillary variables, wind direction, time of day, or month. The influence of a nearby city, the daily evolution of the low atmosphere, and the growing season were highlighted. Finally, the usefulness of the method lies in its easy extension to other gases or variables.

The contamination of drinking water resources by toxic metals is a major problem in many parts of the world, particularly in dense populated areas of developing countries that lack wastewater treatment facilities. The present study characterizes the recent evolution with time of some contaminants deposited in the Congo River and Lake Ma Vallée, both located in the vicinity of the large city of Kinshasa, capital of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Physicochemical parameters including grain size distribution, organic matter and trace element concentrations were measured in sediment cores sampled from Congo River (n = 3) and Lake Ma Vallée (n = 2). The maximum concentration of trace elements in sediment profiles was found in the samples from the sites of Pool Malebo, with the values of 107.2, 111.7, 88.6, 39.3, 15.4, 6.1 and 4.7 mg kg⁻¹ for Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, As and Hg, respectively. This site, which is characterized by intense human activities, is especially well known for the construction of numerous boats that are used for regular navigation on Congo River. Concerning Lake Ma Vallée, the concentration of all metals are generally low, with maximum values of 26.3, 53.6, 16.1, 15.3, 6.5 and 1.8 mg kg⁻¹ for Cr, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb and As, respectively. However, the comparison of the metal profiles retrieved from the different sampled cores also reveals specific variations. The results of this study point out the sediment pollution by toxic metals in the Congo River Basin. This research presents useful tools for the evaluation of sediment contamination of river–reservoir systems.

In this study, different types of food wastes were used as the major source of protein to replace the fish meal in fish feeds to produce quality fish (polyculture of different freshwater fish). During October 2011–April 2012, the concentrations of Hg in water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment of the three experimental fish ponds located in Sha Tau Kok Organic Farm were monitored, and the results were similar to or lower than those detected in commercial fish ponds around the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region (by comparing data of previous and present studies). Health risk assessments indicated that human consumption of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), a herbivore which fed food waste feed pellets would be safer than other fish species: mud carp (Cirrhina molitorella), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and largemouth bass (Lepomis macrochirus). Due to the lower species diversity and substantially shorter food chains of the polyculture system consisting of only three fish species, the extent of Hg biomagnification was significantly lower than other polyculture ponds around PRD. Furthermore, the use of food waste instead of fish meal (mainly consisted of contaminated trash fish) further reduced the mercury accumulation in the cultured fish.

Paracetamol is a widely used as an analgesic and an antipyretic that can easily accumulate in aquatic environments. This study aimed to enhance paracetamol removal efficiency from water by combining the biocatalytic activity of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with the adsorption of nanofibrous membrane. Poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid)/SiO₂electrospinning nanofibrous membrane was prepared with fiber diameters of 200 to 300 nm. The membrane was made insoluble by the thermal cross-linking process. HRP, which was previously activated by 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole, was covalently immobilized on the surface of nanofibers. Immobilized HRP retained 79.4 % of the activity of free HRP. The physical, chemical, and biochemical properties of the immobilized HRP and its application in paracetamol removal were comprehensively investigated. Immobilized HRP showed better storage capability and higher tolerance to the changes in pH and temperature than free HRP. Paracetamol removal rate by immobilized HRP (83.5 %) was similar to that of free HRP (84.4 %), but immobilized HRP showed excellent reusability. The results signify that enzyme immobilized on nanofibers has great application potential in water treatment.

Heavy metals are persistent environmental contaminants, and wild animals are increasingly exposed to the harmful effects of compounds of anthropogenic origin, even in areas distant from industrial centers. We used atomic absorption spectrometry to determine levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in liver and kidney of wild Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) in Poland. Cd concentrations in liver (0.21 ± 0.44 μg/g) and in kidney (2.81 ± 4.52 μg/g) were lower in juvenile than in adult beavers. Pb concentrations in liver (0.08 ± 0.03 μg/g) and kidney (0.08 ± 0.03 μg/g) were similar among all individuals, while both Cu and Zn levels were higher in liver (Cu 9.2 ± 4.5 μg/g; Zn 35.7 ± 3.5 μg/g) than in kidney (Cu 3.7 ± 1.1 μg/g; Zn 21.5 ± 2.7 μg/g). Cu levels also differed between juveniles and adults. We reviewed the literature reporting metal concentrations in beavers. Our results indicate metal contamination in beavers away from important industrial emission sources and suggest the natural environment should be regularly monitored to ensure their levels are below recommended, legal values.

The glutathione metabolism contains crucial antioxidant molecules to defend the organisms against oxidants. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the response of the glutathione metabolism in the liver of freshwater fish Oreochromis niloticus exposed to metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn) in different periods. Fish were exposed to metals (as 1 μg/mL) individually for 1, 7, and 14 days and subsequently antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, GPX; glutathione reductase, GR and glutathione S-transferase, GST) and glutathione levels (total glutathione, tGSH; reduced glutathione, rGSH; oxidized glutathione, GSSG and GSH/GSSG ratios) in the liver were measured. There was no fish mortality during the experiments, except Cu exposure. The antioxidant enzymes responded differently to metal exposures depending on metal types and exposure durations. GPX activity increased only after Cd exposure, while GST activity increased following 7 days of all metal exposures. However, GR activity did not alter in most cases. Total GSH and GSH/GSSG levels generally decreased, especially after 7 days. Data showed that metal exposures significantly altered the response of antioxidant system parameters, particularly at day 7 and some recovery occurred after 14 days. This study suggests that the response of antioxidant system could help to predict metal toxicity in the aquatic environments and be useful as an “early warning tool” in natural monitoring studies.

Selenate and selenite are two main kinds of inorganic selenium (Se) sources in soil, but these substances can pose threats to the environment. Phytoextraction is an emerging technology to remove Se from polluted soils by using a hyper-accumulator. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate Se phytoextraction potential of pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) and to determine the effects of Se on growth and Se accumulation of pak choi under successive planting conditions (four crops). Results showed that Se concentration in pak choi shoots significantly increased as selenate and selenite rates increased. Se concentration increased in successive crops on soil treated with selenite; by contrast, Se concentration decreased in crops on soil treated with selenate. Se concentrations of pak choi on soil treated with selenate were higher than those on soil treated with selenite. The maximum Se accumulations amount in crops on selenite- and selenate-treated soil were 7818 and 8828 μg · pot⁻¹, respectively. High bioconcentration factor (BCF) values indicated that pak choi could accumulate more Se from Se-contaminated soil. The Se phytoextraction efficiency of pak choi increased under successive planting conditions in selenite and selenate treatments; the maximum Se phytoextraction efficiencies of four successive crops of pak choi on selenite- and selenate-treated soil were 4.91 and 31.90 %, respectively. These differences between selenate and selenite treatments were attributed to the differences in Se forms in soil. Total and available Se contents in soil decreased significantly during repeated planting crops on soil treated with selenate; conversely, total and available Se contents decreased slightly in crops on soil treated with selenite. These results suggested that pak choi could highly tolerate and accumulate Se. Thus, pak choi may remove Se from contaminated soil; indeed, pak choi can be used in the phytoextraction of Se in polluted soil.

The primitive electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has brought a series of environmental pollutants in Guiyu, China. Antimony is one of the important metal contaminants and has aroused the global concerns recently. We aimed to investigate concentrations of antimony in human hair from Guiyu and compared them with those from a control area where no e-waste recycling exists, and assessed the potential risk factors. A total of 205 human hair samples from Guiyu and 80 samples from Jinping were collected for analysis. All volunteers were asked to complete a questionnaire including socio-demographic characteristics and other possible factors related to hair antimony exposure. The concentrations of hair antimony were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Our results indicated that the level of hair antimony in volunteers from Guiyu (median, 160.78; range, 6.99–4412.59 ng/g) was significantly higher than those from Jinping (median, 61.74; range, 2.98–628.43 ng/g). The residents who engaged in e-waste recycling activities in Guiyu had higher hair antimony concentrations than others (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference of hair antimony concentrations among different occupation types in e-waste recycling. Multiple stepwise regression analysis indicated that hair antimony concentrations were associated with education level (β = −0.064), the time of residence in Guiyu (β = 0.112), living house also served as e-waste workshop (β = 0.099), the work related to e-waste (β = 0.169), and smoking (β = 0.018). The elevated hair antimony concentrations implied that the residents in Guiyu might be at high risk of antimony contamination, especially the e-waste recycling workers. Work related to e-waste recycling activities and long-time residence in Guiyu contributed to the high hair antimony exposure.

The coffee processing industry is one of the major agro-based industries contributing significantly in international and national growth. Coffee fruits are processed by two methods, wet and dry process. In wet processing, coffee fruits generate enormous quantities of high strength wastewater requiring systematic treatment prior to disposal. Different method approach is used to treat the wastewater. Many researchers have attempted to assess the efficiency of batch aeration as posttreatment of coffee processing wastewater from an upflow anaerobic hybrid reactor (UAHR)-continuous and intermittent aeration system. However, wet coffee processing requires a high degree of processing know-how and produces large amounts of effluents which have the potential to damage the environment. Characteristics of wastewater from coffee processing has a biological oxygen demand (BOD) of up to 20,000 mg/l and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) of up to 50,000 mg/l as well as the acidity of pH below 4. In this review paper, various methods are discussed to treat coffee processing wastewaters; the constitution of wastewater is presented and the technical solutions for wastewater treatment are discussed.

The objectives of this study are to diagnose and prevent environmental problems that threaten urban sustainability, the impact of changes in lifestyle (diet, domestic sanitation, and motorization), and production style (agriculture, industry, and services) with the rapid urbanization on regional nitrogen (N) flows, and the water environment was quantitatively evaluated. The megacity Shanghai was chosen as a case study to investigate the temporal changes in nitrogen flow during 1980–2008 by a multidisciplinary approach (a field survey, a regional nitrogen mass balance model, input-output analysis, etc.). Although the total potential nitrogen load in Shanghai has decreased in the 2000s and water pollution problems seem to have improved, the problem has shifted and expanded to affect a wider area through the food/product chain and water/air movement. Further effective solutions that aim at material cycles are necessary and have to be implemented on a large scale.
