Due to their characteristics, colloidal particles are able to control the dispersion of many organic and inorganic pollutants in soils and streams. Colloidal precipitates generated by acid mine drainage (AMD) process are usually amorphous or nanocrystalline materials, and their stability plays a crucial role in controlling the fate of metals released by sulphide oxydation. This paper describes a study of elements release (Fe, Al, Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, S, Zn) due to desorption or destabilization of three different colloidal precipitates, two ochreous and a greenish-blue precipitate, sampled at the Libiola mine site (northwest Italy). The samples were heated at high temperature in order to verify this treatment as inertization process. At room temperature, the most easily extracted element was S (with released percentages from 8.39 to 29.17 %), but considerable amounts of Cu, Zn and Mn (up to 16.6, 610.6 and 595.6 mg/kg, respectively) were also observed in the leachates for greenish-blue precipitates. The highest release of elements (S > Cu, Zn, Mn, Cd > Co, Ni > Al, Fe, Cr), with minor differences depending on the mineralogical composition of the samples, was observed for heat-treated samples obtained through moderate heating and mainly formed by anhydrous phases. Samples treated at high temperature had the lowest release, with only Cu showing a significant concentration in the leachate of greenish-blue precipitates. The results showed that dissolution/desorption is limited from ochreous natural colloidal precipitates occurring at the Libiola mine site but also that high amounts of some metals can be remobilized from greenish-blue precipitates. The destabilization of all percipitates through dehydratation–dehydroxylation can further remobilize important amounts of ecotoxic elements. Heat treatment at high temperature could be a definitive, although expensive, way to fix heavy metals in the solid fraction, preventing their dispersion in the surrounding environment.

This paper describes the development of an artificial neural network (ANN) model based on economical and sustainability indicators for the prediction of annual non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) emissions in China for the period 2005–2011 and its comparison with inventory emission factor models. The NMVOCs emissions in China were estimated using ANN model which was created using available data for nine European countries, which NMVOC emission per capita approximately correspond to the Chinese emissions, for the period 2004–2012. The forward input selection strategy was used to compare the significance of particular inputs for the prediction of NMVOC emissions in the nine selected EU countries and China. The final ANN model was trained using only five input variables, and it has demonstrated similar accuracy in predicting NMVOC emissions for the selected EU countries that were used for the development of the model and then for China for which the input dataset was previously unknown to the ANN model. The obtained mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values were 8 % for EU countries and 5 % for China. Also, the temporal trend of NMVOC emissions predicted in this study is generally consistent with the trend obtained using inventory emission models. The proposed ANN approach can represent a viable alternative for the prediction of NMVOC emissions at the national level, in particular for developing countries which are usually lacking emission data.

The present overview discusses the findings of cryptosporidiosis research conducted in Africa and highlights the currently available information on Cryptosporidium epidemiology, genetic diversity, and distribution on the African continent, particularly among vulnerable populations, including children. It also emphasizes the burden of cryptosporidiosis, which is underestimated due to the presence of many silent asymptomatic carriers.Cryptosporidiosis is recognized as one of the leading causes of childhood diarrhea in African countries. It has dramatic adverse effects on child growth and development and causes increased mortality on a continent where HIV, poverty, and lack of sanitation and infrastructure increase the risk of cryptosporidial waterborne infection.

Biological aerated filters (BAFs) are widely used for the treatment of micropolluted surface water. However, the biological process produces dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), which, as precursors of nitrogenous disinfection by-products, pose potential threats to drinking water safety. Therefore, to control DON in BAF effluent, it is necessary to study the influence of BAF operation parameters on DON production. In this study, the influence of filtration velocity in a BAF on DON production was investigated. Under different filtration velocity (0.5, 2, and 4 m/h) conditions, profiles of DON concentrations along the media layer were measured. The profile at a filtration velocity of 0.5 m/h showed a decreasing trend, and the ones under filtration velocities of 2 and 4 m/h fluctuated in a small range (from 0.1 to 0.4 mg/L). Moreover, the relatively high filtration velocities of 2 and 4 m/h resulted in a lower level of DON concentration. Additionally, 3D excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize DON. It is found that the patterns of DON at a relatively high filtration velocity condition (4 m/h) were obviously different from the ones under low filtration velocity conditions (0.5 and 2 m/h).

Adams, Samuel | Adom, Philip Kofi | Klobodu, Edem Kwame Mensah
This study examines the effect of urbanization, income, trade openness, and institutional quality (i.e., regime type and durability) on environmental degradation in Ghana over the period 1965–2011. Using the bounds test approach to cointegration and the Fully Modified Phillip-Hansen (FMPH) technique, the findings show that urbanization, income, trade openness, and institutional quality have long-run cointegration with environmental degradation. Further, the results show that income, trade openness, and institutional quality are negatively associated with environmental degradation. This suggests that income, trade openness, and institutional quality enhance environmental performance. Urbanization, however, is positively related to environmental degradation. Additionally, long-run estimates conditioned on institutional quality reveal that the extent to which trade openness and urbanization enhance environmental performance is largely due to the presence of quality institutions (or democratic institutions). Finally, controlling for structural breaks, we find that trade openness, urbanization, and regime type (i.e., democracy) improve environmental performance significantly after the 1970s except for income.

China’s natural waters are experiencing an increasingly anthropogenic perturbation widely including acidification and hypoxia, and toxic metals including copper (Cu) are subject to a series of reactions including chemical speciation and transformation. However, there is still little information available regarding such alterations of metal behaviors in China’s natural waters. By using solid phase extraction technique, this study for the first time measured total dissolved Cu, and different Cu species: toxic labile Cu (referred to those free cupric ions and some weakly organic compounds adsorbed onto Chelex-100 resins), the organic refractory Cu (referred to those adsorbed onto C18 resins after passing through Chelex-100 resins), and residual Cu (obtained by subtracting labile and organic refractory fractions from the total) in a freshwater lake (the Lover) and a saltwater lagoon (the Yundang) in Xiamen, China. Our results demonstrated that both waters were characterized with relatively low levels of total dissolved Cu (5–10 nM), as a result of a net removal process dominated by particle adsorption and precipitation. Relatively high proportion of organic refractory Cu (as high as 50 %) was observed in the saltwater Yundang lagoon as a result of organic matter production and/or discharges followed by complexation nearby. On the other hand, the toxic labile Cu accounted for >40 % of the total dissolved Cu pool in these waters, and particularly the increased proportion of toxic labile Cu (as high as 70 %) occurred in the bottom sulfidic Lover Lake. Our study provides clear evidence that toxic labile Cu could be transformed under reducing environments such as deep sulfidic waters of the Lover Lake (Xiamen, China), and the releases of toxic labile metals are increasingly threatening nearby aquatic ecosystems.

Lorente, Daniel Balsalobre | Álvarez-Herranz, Agustín
This study establishes the existence of a pattern of behavior, between economic growth and environmental degradation, consistent with the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis for 17 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries between 1990 and 2012. Based on this EKC pattern, it shows that energy regulation measures help reduce per capita greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To validate this hypothesis, we also add the explanatory variables: renewable energy promotion, energy innovation processes, and the suppression effect of income level on the contribution of renewable energy sources to total energy consumption. It aims to be a tool for decision-making regarding energy policy. This paper provides a two-stage econometric analysis of instrumental variables with the aim of correcting the existence of endogeneity in the variable GDP per capita, verifying that the instrumental variables used in this research are appropriate for our aim. To this end, it first makes a methodological contribution before incorporating additional variables associated with environmental air pollution into the EKC hypothesis and showing how they positively affect the explanation of the correction in the GHG emission levels. This study concludes that air pollution will not disappear on its own as economic growth increases. Therefore, it is necessary to promote energy regulation measures to reduce environmental pollution.

The occurrence of six common antibiotics in the surface water, sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) of the Jiyun River, a typical river in the livestock-producing region in Beijing, northern China, was investigated. The results revealed that the antibiotics were widely distributed in the studied area. The aqueous samples were contaminated by the antibiotics, and the target antibiotics presented in highest levels were sulfonamides, with maximum concentrations of 230 and 385 ng/L for sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole, respectively. Oxytetracyline, one of the tetracylines, was the most frequently detected compound in the particulate phase with maximum concentration of 121 and 130 ng/g in the sediment and SPM, respectively. The total antibiotic concentration in the water was higher in the tributary than that in the main river, demonstrating that the tributaries were discharging antibiotics into the main river. In addition, the partition coefficients of sediment-water (KpS) and the SPM-water (KpSᴾᴹ) were calculated. Overall, the KpS decreases with an increase in the contents of SPM. In terms of the interaction between SPM and water, linear relationship between logarithm of KpSᴾᴹ (log KpSᴾᴹ) and the logarithm of molecular weight (log MW) was obtained, suggesting that large and heavy molecules are more likely to be attracted to suspended particulates, eventually leading to their enrichments in bed sediments.

Kaur, Kirandeep | Satindara Kaura, | Arawindara Kaura,
Scanning electron microscopic observations were made for the changes in the surface ultra morphology of gill of Labeo rohita as indicators of the stress of lethal (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 mg/L dye) and sublethal (0.0225, 0.045, and 0.09 mg/L dye) doses of Basic Violet-1 (CI: 42535, Trade name- Methyl Violet-2B). Present study was taken up as insufficient data exist regarding safety of this dye. The dye was observed to be cytotoxic in nature during the short term (96 h) exposure to lethal doses and tumorogenic as well as cytotoxic during the long term (150 day) exposure to sublethal doses. The dye caused reduction or complete loss of microridges, proliferation of chloride cells, and degeneration of gill lamellae and rakers. The toxic effects became more pronounced with duration as 0.0225 mg/L dye caused remarkable distortion of the normal structure of gills after 150 days of exposure. Such changes may have become the underlying cause for 45–50 % mortality of fish exposed to even sublethal doses of dye as the gills of fish perform a range of vital functions. In the present study, changes in ultra morphology were observed on the 50th day whereas mortality was noticed between 100 and 150 days of subchronic exposure. Therefore, time to time monitoring of ultra morphology of gill will provide us early indicators for the stress of very low levels of pollutants which may later cause mortality of the fish.

Diop, Mamadou | Amara, Rachid
This paper presents the results of seasonal (wet and dry seasons) and spatial (five sites) variation of mercury concentration in seven marine organisms representative for shallow Senegalese coastal waters and including species of commercial importance. Total mercury levels were recorded in the green algae (Ulva lactuca); the brown mussel (Perna perna); the Caramote prawn (Penaeus kerathurus); and in the liver and muscles of the following fish: Solea senegalensis, Mugil cephalus, Saratherondon melanotheron, and Sardinella aurita. The total selenium (Se) contents were determined only in the edible part of Perna perna, Penaeus kerathurus and in the muscles of Sardinella aurita and Solea senegalensis. Hg concentration in fish species was higher in liver compared to the muscle. Between species differences in Hg, concentrations were recorded with the highest concentration found in fish and the lowest in algae. The spatiotemporal study showed that there was no clear seasonal pattern in Hg concentrations in biota, but spatial differences existed with highest concentrations in sites located near important anthropogenic pressure. For shrimp, mussel, and the muscles of sardine and sole, Hg concentrations were below the health safety limits for human consumption as defined by the European Union. The Se/Hg molar ratio was always higher than one whatever the species or location suggesting a protection of Se against Hg potential adverse effect.
