Kang, Jia | Ma, Teng-Fei | Zhang, Peng | Gao, Xu | Chen, You-Peng
Utilization-associated products (UAPs) and biomass-associated products (BAPs) were quantified separately in this study to characterize soluble microbial products (SMPs) in a drinking water lab-scale biological aerated filter (BAF), and their basic characteristics were explored using gel filtration chromatography and three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectrophotometry with fluorescence regional integration analysis and parallel factor model. UAPs were observed increased with the increase of filter media depth and accumulated after BAF treatment, whereas BAPs were basically constant. 3D-EEM spectroscopy analysis result showed that tryptophan and protein-like compounds were the main components of UAPs and BAPs, and fulvic-acid-like substance was a major component of BAPs, rather than UAPs. In terms of molecular weight (MW) distribution, UAP MW presented a bimodal distribution in the range of 1–5 and >10 kDa, while BAP MW exhibited unimodal distribution with MW >20 kDa fraction accounting for more than 90 %. The macromolecules of UAPs accumulated after BAF treatment. This study provides theoretical support for in-depth study of SMP characteristics.

Yadav, Anoop | Garg, V. K.
This paper reports the effect of earthworm population density on the vermicomposting of effluent treatment plant sludge of a bakery industry. Four waste mixtures containing 0, 10, 20, and 30 % sludge along with cow dung with five different worm population densities were established for 14 weeks under controlled moisture and temperature conditions. The results showed that average worm biomass, growth and cocoon production were lesser at higher population densities. Sexual maturity was attained in 3rd to 5th week in all waste mixtures. Worm growth was inversely related to worm population density in the waste mixture. Results also indicated that lower worm population is favorable to worm biomass production. On the other hand, mineralization and stabilization of the waste mixtures were more at higher worm populations.

The laccase and ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (USPIO) have been assembled inside the tubular mesoporous silica via co-adsorption technology to prepare host/guest-type immobilized laccase, which is applied to degrade methoxychlor (MXC) in aqueous and reverse micelle environments. The effects of various parameters on degradation of MXC were studied. Under the optimum conditions, the degradation rate could reach maximum value of 45.6 % and remain at 20.8 % after seven cycles. Moreover, the addition of small molecular compound 2, 2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) to the system could greatly improve the degradation efficiency. The MXC degradation process is a first-order reaction, and the activation energy of MXC degradation catalyzed by immobilized laccase (41.46 kJ mol⁻¹) is relatively lower than that catalyzed by free laccase (44.91 kJ mol⁻¹). Based on the degradation products measured by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), the degradation mechanism of MXC has also been proposed.

This study evaluates the efficacy of a sanitary sewage treatment system, proposing post-treatment of the effluent generated by the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket UASB reactor, through a Fenton coagulation/oxidation ((ferric chloride (FC) or ferrous sulfate (FS) and peracetic acid (PAA)), followed by a double filtration system, composed of a gravel ascending drainage filter and a sand descending filter. Following the assessment of treatability, the system efficiency was evaluated using physicochemical and microbiological parameters. In all treatments performed in the pilot unit, total suspended solids (TSS) were completely removed, leading to a decrease in turbidity greater than 90 % and close to 100 % removal of total phosphorous. In the FC and PAA combination, the effluent was oxygenated prior to filtration, enabling a more significant removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), which characterizes aerobic degradation even in a quick sand filter. The treatments carried out in the presence of the PAA oxidizing agent showed a more significant bleaching of the effluent. Concerning the microbiological parameters, the simultaneous use of PAA and FC contributed to the partial inactivation of the assessed microorganisms. A 65 % recovery of the effluent was obtained with the proposed treatment system, considering the volume employed in filter backwashing.

Yin, Guanyi | Liu, Liming | Chang, Xiao | Sun, Jin
To explore the future of the material demand, pollutant emission, production, and arable land area surrounding the Dongting Lake basin, and to find a potential solution for agricultural development, this study assumes the following four agriculture intensification scenarios: the natural development scenario (ND), the production development scenario (PD), the moderate intensification scenario (MI), and the local resilience scenario (LR). The scenarios focus on different developmental patterns (natural development, short-term production growth, long-term sustainability, or self-sufficiency).The result shows to satisfy the food demand in 2030, and the production of crop and meat will be 26.96, 30.25, 28.05, and 16.27 × 10⁶ t in ND, PD, MI, and LR, respectively; more than 1.78 × 10⁶ ha of arable land is needed. Compared with the year 2012, the material input and pollutant output will increase by a maximum of 18.32 and 122.31 %, respectively. By classifying the environmental risk into four categories—greenhouse gas emission, air pollution, eutrophication, and ecotoxicity—the composite environmental risk index (CER) is calculated. The CER in PD was the highest, followed by that in ND, LR, and MI. Due to the production allocation within the 35 cities and counties, the spatial distribution of CER is more homogenous in PD and MI than in ND. The analysis of the scenarios reveals that through technological improvement and spatial allocation of agricultural production, scenario MI could be a potential direction for the government to design a sustainable agricultural-environmental system.

Jain, Ram B.
Using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the period 2003–2012, the objective of this study was to evaluate trends in blood lead levels (BLL) among adults aged 20–64 years (adults) and seniors aged ≥65 years (seniors). In addition, the contribution of other factors like gender, race/ethnicity, smoking, and exposure to secondhand smoke at home in explaining variability in BLL was also evaluated by fitting regression models with log10 transformed values of BLL as dependent variables. BLL decreased over 2003–2012 (p < 0.01). Irrespective of gender, race/ethnicity, and smoking status, seniors were found to have higher BLL than adults. Based on the magnitude of differences between the 5th and 95th percentiles, variability in the levels of blood lead was found to be substantially higher among seniors than among adults. Males had statistically significantly higher adjusted BLL than females (2.32 vs. 1.76 μg/dL for seniors, p < 0.01 and 1.66 vs. 1.13 μg/dL for adults, p < 0.01). Non-Hispanic whites had statistically significantly lower adjusted BLL than non-Hispanic blacks (1.99 vs. 2.42 μg/dL for seniors, p < 0.01 and 1.22 vs. 1.42 μg/dL for adults, p < 0.01). When compared with non-smokers, smokers had statistically significantly higher BLL (2.19 vs. 1.86 μg/dL for seniors, p < 0.01 and 1.54 vs. 1.22 μg/dL for adults, p < 0.01). Non-obese had statistically significantly higher BLL than obese individuals (2.11 vs. 1.93 μg/dL for seniors, p < 0.01 and 1.48 vs. 1.27 μg/dL for adults, p < 0.01). Exposure to secondhand smoke at home (SHS) was associated with statistically significantly higher BLL than when there was no exposure to SHS (β = 0.0683, p = 0.03 for seniors; β = 0.034, p = 0.034, p < 0.01 for adults).

The aim of this study was to investigate the performances of polyamide nanofiltration membranes during water reclamation. The study was conducted using nanofiltration concentrates obtained from two different nanofiltration drinking water treatment plants placed in the northern part of Serbia (Kikinda and Zrenjanin). Used nanofiltration concentrates contained high concentrations of arsenic (45 and 451 μg/L) and natural organic matter (43.1 and 224.40 mgKMnO₄/L). Performances of polyamide nanofiltration membranes during water reclamation were investigated under various fluxes and transmembrane pressures in order to obtain drinking water from nanofiltration concentrates and, therefore, reduce the amount of produced concentrates and minimize the waste that has to be discharged in the environment. Applied polyamide nanofiltration membranes showed better removal efficiency during water reclamation when the concentrate with higher content of arsenic and natural organic matter was used while the obtained permeates were in accordance with European regulations. This study showed that total concentrate yield can be reduced to ~5 % of the optimum flux value, in both experiments. The obtained result for concentrate yield under the optimum flux presents considerable amount of reclaimed drinking water and valuable reduced quantity of produced wastewater.

To improve the public’s awareness of urban air pollution and promote establishment of more efficient policy toward urban air pollution, we investigated the government employees’ perceptions of current urban air pollution and their willingness to pay (WTP) taxes for improved quality in Nanchang, China. Stratified cluster sampling strategy was used to distribute 629 questionnaires, and 608 were completed anonymously, yielding a 96.7 % response rate. Descriptive statistics frequencies and proportions were used to summarize the sample characteristics, and logistic regression models were performed to assess the associations of perception of urban air quality and WTP versus demographic variables. We found low awareness of urban air pollution (34.5 %) as well as low WTP (44.9 %), especially among the middle aged people (age 30–39 and age 40–49). Our study shows that female employees have better awareness of urban air pollution but much less willingness to pay for air quality improvement. Majority of the government employees showed their support to the government for more effective policies toward environmental protection, indicating more enhanced public education and environmental protection campaigns to improve the public’s awareness of air pollution and work with every citizen to improve air quality. This study also obtained baseline information useful to the local regional and even national government in developing nations in their attempt to control urban air pollution in future.

Rafique, Nazia | Tariq, Saadia R. | Ahad, Karam | Taj, Touqeer
The influences of Cu²⁺ and Fe²⁺ on the photodegradation of soil-incorporated chlorpyrifos were investigated in the present study. The soil samples spiked with chlorpyrifos and selected metal ions were irradiated with UV light for different intervals of time and analyzed by HPLC. The unsterile and sterile control soil samples amended with pesticides and selected metals were incubated in the dark at 25 °C for the same time intervals. The results of the study evidenced that photodegradation of chlorpyrifos followed the first-order kinetics. The dissipation t₀.₅ of chlorpyrifos was found to decrease from 41 to 20 days under UV irradiation. The rate of chlorpyrifos photodegradation was increased in the presence of both metals, i.e., Cu²⁺ and Fe²⁺. Thus, initially observed t₀.₅ of 19.8 days was decreased to 4.39 days in the case of Cu⁺² and 19.25 days for Fe⁺². Copper was found to increase the rate of photodegradation by 4.5 orders of magnitude while the microbial degradation of chlorpyrifos was increased only twofold. The microbial degradation of chlorpyrifos was only negligibly affected by Fe²⁺ amendment. The studied trace metals also affected the abiotic degradation of the pesticide in the order Cu²⁺ > Fe²⁺.

2016
Su, Haojie | Wu, Yao | Xie, Ping | Chen, Jun | Cao, Te | Xia, Wulai
Carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the three most important essential elements limiting growth of primary producers. Submerged macrophytes generally absorb nutrients from sediments by root uptake. However, the C:N:P stoichiometric signatures of plant tissue are affected by many additional factors such as taxonomy, nutrient availability, and light availability. We first revealed the relative importance of taxonomy, sediment, and water column on plant C:N:P stoichiometry using variance partitioning based on partial redundancy analyses. Results showed that taxonomy was the most important factor in determining C:N:P stoichiometry, then the water column and finally the sediment. In this study, a significant positive relationship was found between community C concentration and macrophyte community biomass, indicating that the local low C availability in macrophytes probably was the main reason why submerged macrophytes declined in Yangtze floodplain shallow lakes. Based on our study, it is suggested that submerged macrophytes in Yangtze floodplain shallow lakes are primarily limited by low light levels rather than nutrient availability.
