Under the climate change context, warming Southern Ocean waters may allow mercury (Hg) to become more bioavailable to the Antarctic marine food web (i.e., ice-stored Hg release and higher methylation rates by microorganisms), whose biomagnification processes are poorly documented. Biomagnification of Hg in the food web of the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the world's fastest-warming regions, was examined using carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) stable isotope ratios for estimating feeding habitat and trophic levels, respectively. The stable isotope signatures and total Hg (T-Hg) concentrations were measured in Antarctic krill Euphausia superba and several Antarctic predator species, including seabirds (gentoo penguins Pygoscelis papua, chinstrap penguins Pygoscelis antarcticus, brown skuas Stercorarius antarcticus, kelp gulls Larus dominicanus, southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus) and marine mammals (southern elephant seals Mirounga leonina). Significant differences in δ¹³C values among species were noted with a great overlap between seabird species and M. leonina. As expected, significant differences in δ¹⁵N values among species were found due to interspecific variations in diet-related to their trophic position within the marine food web. The lowest Hg concentrations were registered in E. superba (0.007 ± 0.008 μg g⁻¹) and the highest values in M. giganteus (12.090 ± 14.177 μg g⁻¹). Additionally, a significant positive relationship was found between Hg concentrations and trophic levels (reflected by δ¹⁵N values), biomagnifying nearly 2 times its concentrations at each level. Our results support that trophic interaction is the major pathway for Hg biomagnification in Southern Ocean ecosystems and warn about an increase in the effects of Hg on long–lived (and high trophic level) Antarctic predators under climate change in the future.

Understanding the processes that underlay an ecological disaster represents a major scientific challenge. Here, we investigated phytoplankton and zooplankton community changes before and during a fauna mass kill in a European protected wetland. Evidence on gradual development and collapse of harmful phytoplankton blooms, allowed us to delineate the biotic and abiotic interactions that led to this ecological disaster. Before the mass fauna kill, mixed blooms of known harmful cyanobacteria and the killer alga Prymnesium parvum altered biomass flow and minimized zooplankton resource use efficiency. These blooms collapsed under high nutrient concentrations and inhibitory ammonia levels, with low phytoplankton biomass leading to a dramatic drop in photosynthetic oxygenation and a shift to a heterotrophic ecosystem phase. Along with the phytoplankton collapse, extremely high numbers of red planktonic crustaceans-Daphnia magna, visible through satellite images, indicated low oxygen conditions as well as a decrease or absence of fish predation pressure. Our findings provide clear evidence that the mass episode of fish and birds kill resulted through severe changes in phytoplankton and zooplankton dynamics, and the alternation on key abiotic conditions. Our study highlights that plankton-related ecosystem functions mirror the accumulated heavy anthropogenic impacts on freshwaters and could reflect a failure in conservation and restoration measures.

Environmental exposure to 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) is extensive, and studies related to human risk assessment must continue. Especially, prediction of toxicodynamics (TDs) related to reproductive toxicity in males is very important in risk-level assessment and management of 4-NP. This study aimed to develop a physiologically-based-toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (PBTK-TD) model that added a TD prostate model to the previously reported 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP) physiologically-based-pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model. Modeling was performed under the assumption of similar TKs between 4-n-NP and 4-NP because TK experiments on 4-NP, a random-mixture, are practically difficult. This study was very important to quantitatively predict the TKs and TDs of 4-NP by age at exposure using an advanced PBTK-TD model that reflected physiological-changes according to age. TD-modeling was performed based on the reported toxic effects of 4-NP on RWPE-1 cells, a human-prostate-epithelial-cell-line. Through a meta-analysis of reported human physiological data, body weight, tissue volume, and blood flow rate patterns according to age were mathematically modeled. These relationships were reflected in the PBTK-TD model for 4-NP so that the 4-NP TK and TD changes according to age and their differences could be confirmed. Differences in TK and TD parameters of 4-NP at various ages were not large, within 3.61-fold. Point-of-departure (POD) and reference-doses for each age estimated using the model varied as 426.37–795.24 and 42.64–79.52 μg/kg/day, but the differences (in POD or reference doses between ages) were not large, at less than 1.87-times. The PBTK-TD model simulation predicted that even a 100-fold 4-NP PODₘₐₙ dose would not have large toxicity to the prostate. With a focus on TDs, the predicted maximum possible exposure of 4-NP was as high as 6.06–23.60 mg/kg/day. Several toxicity-related values estimated by the dose-response curve were higher than those calculated, depending upon the PK or TK, which would be useful as a new exposure limit for prostate toxicity of 4-NP.

Reservoirs located in middle and high latitudes freeze for months in winter, where the accumulation characteristics of pollutants are changed by superimposed influence of salt exclusion from ice on the surface and pollution release from sediments at the bottom. Taking total nitrogen (TN) of Biliuhe reservoir in Northeast China as an example, we developed a model to simulate TN accumulation characteristics influenced by ice and sediments during the freezing period (NACISF), and quantified contributions of TN from ice and sediments. Model parameters of ice and sediments were determined by laboratory freeze-up simulation experiment and sediment release flux simulation experiment, and water quality data were obtained from field investigations. Results showed that the annual average amount of TN input during the ice-covered period from 2015 to 2020 was 220.77 t, the output was 400.11 t, and the accumulated amount was 589.52 t. TN excluded from ice and released from sediments contributed 8.12% and 7.17% of the total TN inputs in winter, respectively. Analysis showed that the TN excluded from ice was positively correlated with ice thickness and initial TN concentration. The maximum ice thickness of Biliuhe reservoir had a 13 year cyclic feature, and the proportion of TN excluded from ice to the total TN inputs in different periods ranged from 10.68% to 17.30% (mean 13.18%). Meanwhile, TN accumulated seasonally as summer > autumn > winter > spring. The TN exclusion effect in 2050 would be weakened when considering the combined effects of climate change and human activities, with a reduction of about 40.85% compared to the current. It is concluded that the NACISF model took into account the influences of both ice and sediments, which provided a detailed understanding of the accumulation characteristics of TN during freezing period, and had important reference significance for water quality management in winter.

High demands for but strict regulatory measures on Organophosphorus Flame Retardants (OPFRs) have resulted in mainland China transitioning from the region that imports OPRFs to one that exports these substances. Simultaneously, large quantities of terrigenous OPFRs have been exported to adjacent seas by the major river systems, particularly the Yangtze River. This study examined the presence of ten OPFRs in China's adjacent seas. High levels of OPFRs were observed in seas south of mainland China, with Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and Tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) dominant. The terrigenous OPFRs were redistributed by the ocean surface currents, with OPFRs tending to accumulate in regions with lower current speed. The producers of OPFRs are mainly distributed along the Haihe, Yellow, and Yangtze river systems. The application of OPFRs to electric vehicle charging stations, charging connectors, and 5G infrastructure in the Chinese mainland will likely drive rapid growth in OPFR related industry in the future. The diffusion trend map of OPFR indicated that the Bohai Sea and the central northern Yellow Sea are at high risk of ecological damage in the spring. The offshore region of the north of the South China Sea tended to aggregate more OPFRs in summer. Regions of the OPFR aggregation effect were at a higher risk of ecological damage.

Cadmium (Cd) is a potentially hazardous element with substantial biological toxicity, adversely affecting plant growth and physiological metabolism. Therefore, it is necessary to explore practical and environment-friendly approaches to reduce toxicity. Jasmonic acid (JA) is an endogenous growth regulator which helps plants defend against biological and abiotic stresses. To determine how JA help relieve Cd toxicity in rice, both laboratory and field experiments were implemented. In the seedling stage, the role of JA in mediating rice Cd tolerance was investigated via a fluorescent probe in vivo localization, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and colorimetry. At the mature growth stage of rice, field experiments were implemented to research the effects of JA on the Cd uptake and translocation in rice. In the seedling stage of rice, we found that JA application increased the cell wall compartmentalization of Cd by promoting the Cd combination on chelated-soluble pectin of rice roots and inhibited Cd movement into protoplasts, thereby reducing the Cd content in the roots by 30.5% and in the shoots by 53.3%, respectively. Application of JA reduced H₂O₂ content and helped relieve Cd-induced peroxidation damage of membrane lipid by increasing the level of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione (GSH), but had no significant effect on the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Additionally, field experiments showed that foliar spraying of JA inhibited rice Cd transport from the stalk and root to the grain and reduced Cd concentration in grain by 29.7% in the high-Cd fields and 28.0% in the low-Cd fields. These results improve our understanding of how JA contributes to resistance against Cd toxicity in rice plants and reduces the accumulation of Cd in rice kernels.

Land application of sewage sludge is increasingly used as an alternative to landfilling and incineration owing to a considerable content of carbon and essential plant nutrients in sewage sludge. However, the presence of chemical and biological contaminants in sewage sludge poses potential dangers; therefore, sewage sludge must be suitably treated before being applied to soils. The most common methods include anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, lime stabilization, incineration, and pyrolysis. These methods aim at stabilizing sewage sludge, to eliminate its potential environmental pollution and restore its agronomic value. To achieve best results on land, a comprehensive understanding of the transformation of organic matter, nutrients, and contaminants during these sewage-sludge treatments is essential; however, this information is still lacking. This review aims to fill this knowledge gap by presenting various approaches to treat sewage sludge, transformation processes of some major nutrients and pollutants during treatment, and potential impacts on soils. Despite these treatments, overtime there are still some potential risks of land application of treated sewage sludge. Potentially toxic substances remain the main concern regarding the reuse of treated sewage sludge on land. Therefore, further treatment may be applied, and long-term field studies are warranted, to prevent possible adverse effects of treated sewage sludge on the ecosystem and human health and enable its land application.

Previous literature on prenatal phenol exposure and thyroid hormone (TH) alteration is conflicting, and the possible mechanisms of action involved remain unclear. We aimed to examine the association between prenatal phenol exposure and levels of maternal and neonatal THs, as well as the possible role of iodothyronine deiodinase (DIO) gene polymorphisms in this relation. We studied 387 Spanish mother–neonate pairs with measurements of maternal phenols, total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free thyroxine (FT4), maternal and neonatal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and maternal genotypes for single nucleotide polymorphisms in the DIO1(rs2235544) and DIO2(rs12885300) genes. We implemented multivariate linear and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions to examine the association between phenols and THs (including sex-stratified models for neonatal TSH) and investigated effect modification of genotypes in the maternal phenol-TH associations. In single exposure models, we found negative associations between maternal triclosan (TCS) and neonatal TSH (% change [95%CI]: −2.95 [-5.70, -0.11], per twofold phenol increase) – stronger for girls – and less clearly for maternal ethylparaben (EPB) and TSH (−2.27 [-4.55, 0.07]). In phenol mixture models, we found no association with THs. In the genetic interaction models, we found some evidence of effect modification of DIO gene polymorphisms with stronger negative associations between methylparaben (MPB), propylparaben (PPB), butylparaben (BPB) and TT3 as well as bisphenol A (BPA) and FT4 for DIO1(rs2235544)-CC. Stronger inverse associations for genotypes DIO2(rs12885300)-CC and DIO2(rs12885300)-CT and positive ones for DIO2(rs12885300)-TT were also reported for BPA and FT4. In conclusion, we found some evidence of an association between phenols and TSH during pregnancy and at birth in single exposure models, the latter being stronger for girls. Since no association was observed between maternal levels of phenols and TT3 or FT4, the possible role of the genetic background in these associations warrants further investigation.

Environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, nano/microparticles, and organic compounds have been detected in a wide range of environmental media, causing long-term exposure in various organisms and even humans through breathing, contacting, ingestion, and other routes. Long-term exposure to environmental pollutants in organisms or humans promotes exposure of offspring to parental and environmental pollutants, and subsequently results in multiple biological defects in the offspring. This review dialectically summarizes and discusses the existing studies using Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model organism to explore the multi/transgenerational toxicity and potential underlying molecular mechanisms induced by environmental pollutants following parental or successive exposure patterns. Parental and successive exposure to environmental pollutants induces various biological defects in C. elegans across multiple generations, including multi/transgenerational developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, and metabolic disturbances, which may be transmitted to progeny through reactive oxygen species-induced damage, epigenetic mechanisms, insulin/insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling pathway. This review aims to arouse researchers’ interest in the multi/transgenerational toxicity of pollutants and hopes to explore the possible long-term effects of environmental pollutants on organisms and even humans, as well as to provide constructive suggestions for the safety and management of emerging alternatives.

Open waste burning emissions constitute a significant source of air pollution affecting human health in India. In regions where cleaner fuels have displaced solid biofuel usage, open waste burning is rapidly becoming one of the largest sources of airborne human class-I-carcinogens and particulate matter. As the establishment of waste management infrastructure in rural India is likely to take years, we explore whether health-relevant emissions can be reduced by legalizing the burning of dry non-biodegradable waste in improved devices. We measure the emission factors of 76 VOCs, CH₄, CO, and CO₂ from different types of waste burned in two different improved devices, a burn basket and a local water heater. Based on our experiments, we create four “what-if” intervention scenarios to assess the improvement of air quality due to the emission reductions that can be accomplished by four management strategies. We find that substituting the traditional, more polluting water heating fuels with dry plastic waste across rural India can reduce primary emissions (e.g., −29 Ggy⁻¹ for benzene) and ozone formation potential (−2960 Ggy⁻¹) from open waste burning. When dry waste is used in lieu of more polluting fuels, and its burning serves a purpose, the net class-I-carcinogen benzene emissions, would be halved compared to the present. The change in emissions for the class-I carcinogen 1,3-butadiene would become net negative. This happens because the emissions avoided when part of the solid biofuel currently used in rural India is replaced by plastic waste (4.1 (1.2–4.1) Ggy⁻¹) exceed the waste burning emissions of this compound (3 (1.2–3.7) Ggy⁻¹) by so much, that residential sector emission reductions offset all waste burning emissions including those of landfill fires. Our study demonstrates that India's air quality can be improved by permitting and promoting the use of dry packaging waste in lieu of traditional biofuels and by promoting improved burning devices.
