Modelling the environmental behaviour of pollutants in Algeciras Bay (south Spain) Texto completo

An environmental study of Algeciras Bay is carried out through numerical modelling. First, a 2D barotropic model is applied to calculate tides and mean circulation. Results of this model are used by a sediment transport model which provides suspended matter concentrations and sedimentation rates in the Bay. It includes three particle classes. An effective diffusion coefficient has been calibrated simulating temperature distribution inside the Bay. An additional validation is obtained from an independent nitrate dispersion simulation. Then heavy metal dispersion patterns are investigated using a model which includes water–sediment metal interactions and uses the outputs of the hydrodynamic and sediment transport models. The metal transport model has been applied to simulate the dispersion of Zn, Cu and Ni. Results from the hydrodynamic, sediment and metal transport models have been compared with measurements. Model results also indicate that transport inside the Bay is relatively weak. Numerical experiments have been carried out to determine flushing times for conservative and non-conservative pollutants. Flushing time is about 20days for a conservative tracer, and this value is mainly due to the M₂ residual current. Tides are not effective in removing pollutants.

The contamination of aquatic environments has become the focus of increasing regulation and public concern due to their potential and unknown negative effects on the ecosystems. The present work develops a monitoring and statistical study, based on the analysis of variance test (ANOVA) and the multivariable analysis, both for insoluble soap and LAS in order to compare the behavior of different anionic surfactants in this environmental compartment. First, a novel and successfully validated methodology to analyze insoluble soap in these samples is developed. The matrix effect and the comparison of different extraction techniques were also performed. The optimized analytical methodologies were applied to 48 representative samples collected from the Almeria Coast (Spain) and then a statistical analysis to correlate anionic surfactant concentration and several variables associated with marine sediment samples was also developed. The results obtained showed relevant conclusions related to the environmental behavior of anionic surfactants in marine sediments.

Baseline Hg concentration in bycatch fish from the SE Gulf of California were determined in muscle and liver of 19 species. Levels of Hg in muscle were compared with legal limits of this element in national and international legislation. Considering all fish species, mean concentrations in liver (2.458±1.997μgg⁻¹) were significantly higher (p<0.05) than in muscle (0.993±0.670μgg⁻¹). The sequence of averaged Hg concentrations in most ichthyofauna was liver>muscle. Highest level of Hg in muscle (2.556μgg⁻¹) and liver (7.515μgg⁻¹) corresponded to Diapterus peruvianus and Ophioscion strabo, respectively. Considering muscle samples, none of the species had levels of Hg above the limit (1.0μgg⁻¹ wet weight) in the Mexican legislation; with respect to the Japanese (0.4μgg⁻¹ wet weight) and British (0.3μgg⁻¹ wet weight) legislations, 26.3% and 31.6% of the species respectively, were above the corresponding limits.

The spatial distribution of polychaeta along pollution gradients often reflects different degrees of disturbance. In order to evaluate polychaeta fauna of an organically polluted tropical bay, 20 sandy beaches distributed in five areas were sampled. The relationship between community structure, slope, beach index, exposure, sediment and water quality parameters were analysed. Multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed differences among areas and beaches. Scolelepis chilensis dominated at mouth of bay beaches whereas Streblospio gynobranchiata and Capitella capitata complex, at inner beaches. Highest polychaete density was recorded at areas 3 and 5 with the dominance of Saccocirrus sp. and the organic indicator species C. capitata complex and Polydora sp. The most important factors obtained from canonical analysis were sorting, slope, mud and organic matter percentage. Marine biotic index (AMBI) showed that areas 3 and 5 were highly affected by anthropogenic factors, given that a poor polychaeta fauna, dominated by opportunistic species, were found. Polychaete assemblages were affected by eutrophication along an estuarine gradient as well as by morphodynamic condition of the beaches.

Historical environmental pollution in a semi-enclosed coastal bay was investigated using high-resolution sedimentary records for Cₒᵣg, Nₜₒₜ, CaCO₃, δ¹³C, and δ¹⁵N signatures, and trace metals. A temporal increase in organic matter might have been attributable to enhanced primary marine productivity, presumably caused by increased anthropogenic nutrient inputs in the semi-enclosed, eutrophic system. Metal accumulation occurred in three stages: a preindustrial stage before the 1930s with natural concentrations of metals, an industrialization stage (1940s–1970s) with the highest concentrations, and a postindustrial stage (post 1970s) with stable or decreasing concentrations. However, Hg exhibited a different accumulation history, with concentrations increasing in the early 1900s and accelerating after the 1920s, probably in response to coal burning.

Photosystem II (PSII) herbicides are used in large quantities on agricultural lands adjoining the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Routine monitoring at 14 sites in inshore waters of the GBR using passive sampling techniques detected diuron (32–94% of sampling periods) at maximum concentrations of 1.7–430ngL⁻¹ in the relatively pristine Cape York Region to the Mackay Whitsunday Region, respectively. A PSII herbicide equivalent (PSII-HEq) index developed as an indicator for reporting was dominated by diuron (average contribution 89%) and typically increased during the wet season. The maximum PSII-HEq indicates the potential for photosynthetic inhibition of diatoms, seagrass and coral-symbionts. PSII herbicides were significantly positively correlated with remotely sensed coloured dissolved organic matter, a proxy for freshwater extent. Combining these methods provides for the first time the potential to cost-effectively monitor improvements in water quality entering the GBR with respect to exposure to PSII herbicides.

The effects of the photosystem II (PSII) herbicide diuron was assessed on thirteen tropical foraminifera hosting diatom, dinoflagellate, red or green algae endosymbionts. Inhibition of photosynthesis (reduced ΔF/Fₘ ′) by diuron depended on both symbiont type and test ultrastructure, with greatest sensitivity observed for diatom- and chlorophyte-hosting species (24h IC₂₅ 2.5–4μgL⁻¹). Inhibition kinetics was slow (24–48h until maximum inhibition) in comparison with corals, suggesting structural differences may influence herbicide uptake and transport. Although foraminifera were generally less sensitive to direct effects of diuron (inhibition ΔF/Fₘ ′) than other marine phototrophs, damage to PSII (reduction Fᵥ/Fₘ) occurred at concentrations lower than observed for other organisms (24h IC₂₅ 3–12μgL⁻¹). Damage to PSII was highly light dependent and occurred at very low light intensities indicating limited photoprotective capacity. The high diversity, widespread occurrence and relative sensitivity make foraminifera good bioindicator organisms to evaluate phytotoxic stress on coral reefs.

To assess the impact of an artificial dyke in Chonsu Bay (CBD) on the organic carbon (Cₒᵣg) cycle, we measured excess ²¹⁰Pb activities, Cₒᵣg and nitrogen content in sediment cores. The Cₒᵣg oxidation rates (Cₒₓ) on the surface sediment and benthic nutrient fluxes were also quantified with an in situ benthic chamber. The higher excess ²¹⁰Pb inventory, Cₒᵣg and nitrogen in cores near the CBD indicated lateral transport and local, massive deposition of particulate matter due to tidal circulation altered by artificial dyke construction. The Cₒₓ in sediment near the CBD was about twice as high as that out of the bay, suggesting the importance of benthic remineralization of organic matter. The benthic fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate were four to six times higher than those outside the bay, corresponding to 141% and 131% respectively, of the requirements for primary production.

The total pollution load management system (TPLMS) was first applied in 2007 to the highly developed Masan Bay watershed, Korea. To evaluate the effect of TPLMS on water quality improvement, we analyzed the water qualities in rivers and bay during 2005–2010, targeting chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended sediment (SS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) loads. Land-based pollutant loading all decreased during this period, with a significant reduction in COD and SS loads (p<0.01). The COD reduction in seawater, following the TPLMS implementation, was also significant (p<0.01). Time-lagged responses in COD and Chl-a supported an estimated seawater residence time of ∼1month. Land-based nutrient loads were also significantly reduced for TN (p<0.01) and TP (p<0.05), however, significant reductions were not observed in the bay, indicating potential alternative nutrient inputs from non-point sources into the bay system.

The occurrence of tetracycline resistance (TRG) and integrase (INT) genes were monitored in Crassostrea virginica oyster reefs of three pristine creeks (SINERR, Georgia, USA). Their profiles revealed 85% similarity with the TRG/INT profiles observed in the adjacent to the SINERR and contaminated Altamaha River estuary (Barkovskii et al., 2010). The TRG/INT spectra and incidence frequencies corresponded to the source of oceanic input and to run-offs from creeks’ watersheds. The highest incidence frequencies and concentrations were observed in oysters. TRG/INT incidences correlated positively (Spearman Rank=0.88), and negatively correlated (−0.63 to −0.79) with creek salinity, conductivity, dissolved solids, and temperature. Coliform incidence positively correlated with temperature, and not with the TRG/INT incidence. The Altamaha River estuary was the primary TRG/INT source for the reefs with contributions from creek’s watersheds. TRG/INT were carried by non-coliforms with a preference for low-to-temperate thermohaline environments coupled with bioaccumulation by oysters.
