As the metabolites of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), tetrabromobisphenol A mono- and di-methyl ethers (TBBPA MME and TBBPA DME) have been detected in various environmental media. However, knowledge of the contribution of plants to their environmental fates, especially to the interactions between TBBPA DME and TBBPA, is quite limited. In this study, the metabolism and behaviors of TBBPA DME was studied with pumpkin plants through 15-day hydroponic exposure. The TBBPA were also studied separately using in-lab hydroponic exposure for comparison. The results showed that more TBBPA DME accumulated in pumpkin roots and translocated up to stems and leaves compared with TBBPA. Transformation of TBBPA DME occurred later and more slowly than that of TBBPA. Interconversion between TBBPA DME and TBBPA was verified in intact plants for the first time. Namely, TBBPA DME can be biotransformed to TBBPA MME (transformation ratio in mole mass, TRMM 0.50%) and to TBBPA (TRMM 0.53%) within pumpkin; and TBBPA can be biotransformed to TBBPA MME (TRMM 0.58%) and to TBBPA DME (TRMM 0.62%). In addition, two single benzene-ring metabolites, 2,6-dibromo-4-(2-(2-hydroxyl)-propyl)-anisole (DBHPA, TRMM 3.4%) with an O-methyl group and 2,6-dibromo-4-(2-(2-hydroxyl)-propyl)-phenetole (DBHPP, TRMM 0.57%) with an O-ethyl group, were identified as the transformation products in the TBBPA exposure experiments. The transformation and interconversion from TBBPA DME back to TBBPA is reported as a new pathway and potential source for TBBPA in the environment.

It is critical to estimate the exposure to indoor air pollution of residents spending most of their time in such microenvironments. However, the understanding regarding PM2.5 exposure in residential indoor environments is very limited. In this study, we collected participants' basic information and time–activity patterns, as well as details of other factors related to indoor air pollution exposure, through questionnaires presented to a large population in 37 counties of China. Continuous monitoring of ambient PM2.5 concentrations was performed using an environmental fixed-site monitoring network. Residential indoor PM2.5 concentrations were predicted using a mass balance model based on the data obtained. Evaluation of continuous daily average residential indoor PM2.5 exposure doses for large populations during winter revealed concentrations ranged from 67 to 195 μg/m3. Finally, differences in residential indoor PM2.5 exposure between northern and southern China were investigated. The results suggested that residential indoor PM2.5 concentrations in northern China, associated with heating, were higher than in the south. The established model could be important for improved understanding of human exposure to indoor PM2.5 air pollution.

Traffic emissions are a complex and variable cocktail of toxic chemicals. They are the major source of atmospheric pollution in the parts of cities where people live, commute and work. Reducing exposure requires information about the distribution and nature of emissions. Spatially and temporally detailed data are required, because both the rate of production and the composition of emissions vary significantly with time of day and with local changes in wind, traffic composition and flow. Increasing computer processing power means that models can accept highly detailed inputs of fleet, fuels and road networks. The state of the science models can simulate the behaviour and emissions of all the individual vehicles on a road network, with resolution of a second and tens of metres. The chemistry of the simulated emissions is also highly resolved, due to consideration of multiple engine processes, fuel evaporation and tyre wear. Good results can be achieved with both commercially available and open source models. The extent of a simulation is usually limited by processing capacity; the accuracy by the quality of traffic data. Recent studies have generated real time, detailed emissions data by using inputs from novel traffic sensing technologies and data from intelligent traffic systems (ITS). Increasingly, detailed pollution data is being combined with spatially resolved demographic or epidemiological data for targeted risk analyses.

A method was proposed to evaluate comprehensive effects of pHs and total metal concentration (TMC) variation for metal speciation human health risk in groundwater. The method used for the health assessment considered comprehensive and mutative effects caused by oral ingestion of groundwater based on human health risk assessment model and MINTEQ simulation. The results demonstrated that the dissolution rate of Ni2+ was affected by pH and Ni total concentration (total-Ni). With the increase of pH, the Ni2+ dissolved rate was smaller in the higher total-Ni at same pH. Ni2+ was dominant components contributed to health risk in groundwater. With the increase of pH in various total-Ni, HINi keep constant at first, and then decreased gradually. The HINi values of Ni speciation above acceptable level only in high total-Ni with alkaline conditions. The obtained results to verify that metals speciation were determined in health risk, and variation factors (pH and metal total concentration) played important role in risk estimation. These results provide basic information of heavy metal pollution control as well as remediation management.

Urban development has led to an increase in urban runoff, accompanied with a decrease in water quality during rain events. One of the major causes of the decrease in water quality is the presence of trace organic contaminants in urban runoff. However, little is known about the sources of organic contaminants in urban runoff, especially related to land-use and temporal trends in those associated land uses. The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence and concentration trends of organic contaminants for a high-density residential site and commercial strip site in Madison, WI. Flow-weighted samples of urban stormwater runoff, collected with an auto-sampler, were composited and analyzed, producing mean organic contaminants concentrations for each storm event. The contaminants, which include pesticides, flame retardants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, corrosion inhibitors, among others, were extracted and analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. There were 30 organic contaminants that had greater than 50% detections in at least one of the sites, and those organic contaminants did provide information on similarities and differences of organic contaminants in urban runoff derived from different land uses. The sum of the total measured pesticides showed no significant difference between sites; this was likely due to the considerable green space and associated pesticide use in both sites. However, there were higher total concentrations of organophosphate flame retardants and corrosion inhibitors in the residential site. The reason for this is unknown and will require follow-up studies; however, several hypotheses are presented. Conversely, there were higher total concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the commercial site; this is most likely due to higher vehicle traffic in the commercial site. These data show that land-use may be important in determining the composition and concentrations of trace organic contaminants in urban stormwater runoff.

Outdoor air pollution is considered as the most serious environmental problem for human health, associated with some million deaths worldwide per year. Cities have to cope with the challenges due to poor air quality impacting human health and citizen well-being. According to an analysis in the framework of this study, the annual mean concentrations of tropospheric ozone (O₃) have been increasing by on average 0.16 ppb year⁻¹ in cities across the globe over the time period 1995–2014. Green urban infrastructure can improve air quality by removing O₃. To efficiently reduce O₃ in cities, it is important to define suitable urban forest management, including proper species selection, with focus on the removal ability of O₃ and other air pollutants, biogenic emission rates, allergenic effects and maintenance requirements. This study reanalyzes the literature to i) quantify O₃ removal by urban vegetation categorized into trees/shrubs and green roofs; ii) rank 95 urban plant species based on the ability to maximize air quality and minimize disservices, and iii) provide novel insights on the management of urban green spaces to maximize urban air quality. Trees showed higher O₃ removal capacity (3.4 g m⁻² year⁻¹ on average) than green roofs (2.9 g m⁻² year⁻¹ as average removal rate), with lower installation and maintenance costs (around 10 times). To overcome present gaps and uncertainties, a novel Species-specific Air Quality Index (S-AQI) of suitability to air quality improvement is proposed for tree/shrub species. We recommend city planners to select species with an S-AQI>8, i.e. with high O₃ removal capacity, O₃-tolerant, resistant to pests and diseases, tolerant to drought and non-allergenic (e.g. Acer sp., Carpinus sp., Larix decidua, Prunus sp.). Green roofs can be used to supplement urban trees in improving air quality in cities. Urban vegetation, as a cost-effective and nature-based approach, aids in meeting clean air standards and should be taken into account by policy-makers.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) are persistent toxic environmental pollutants that cause severe reproductive toxicity in animals. The goal of this study was to compare the reproductive toxic effects of TBBPA and TCBPA on male Rana nigromaculata and to expound on the mechanisms leading to these effects. Healthy adult frogs were exposed to 0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mg/L of TBBPA and TCBPA for 14 days. Sperm numbers were counted by erythrometry. Sperm mobility and deformities were observed under a light microscope (400 ×). We used commercial ELISA kits to determine the serum content of testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Expression of androgen receptor (AR) mRNA was detected using real-time qPCR. Sperm numbers and sperm mobility were significantly decreased and sperm deformity was significantly increased in a concentration dependent manner following exposure to TBBPA and TCBPA. Sperm deformity was significantly greater in the 1 mg/L TCBPA (0.549) treatment group than in the 1 mg/L TBBPA (0.397) treatment group. Serum T content was significantly greater in the 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg/L TBBPA and TCBPA experimental groups compared with controls, while E2 content was significantly greater in only the 1 mg/L TBBPA and TCBPA experimental groups. Expression levels of LH and FSH significantly decreased in the 1 mg/L TBBPA and TCBPA treatment groups. AR mRNA expression decreased markedly in all the treated groups. Our results indicated that TBBPA and TCBPA induced reproductive toxicity in a dose-dependent manner, with TCBPA having greater toxicity than TBBPA. Furthermore, changes in T, E2, LH, and FSH levels induced by TBBPA and TCBPA exposure, which led to endocrine disorders, also caused disturbance of spermatogenesis through abnormal gene expressions of AR in the testes.

Dicamba (DIC) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) are two of the most applied auxinic herbicides worldwide, both individually and as part of a mixture. However, the toxicity and interactions achieved when applied as a mixture have not yet been characterised. The equitoxic and non-equitoxic acute toxicity exerted by binary mixtures of Banvel® (57.71% DIC) and DMA® (58.4% 2,4-D) on the Neotropical fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were evaluated. Results revealed mean values of 1.02 (range, 0.96–1.08) for the toxic unit (TU) that induced 50% mortality (TU50 96 h) to the fish exposed to binary equitoxic mixtures of the commercial formulations Banvel®–DMA®. These results suggest that the mixture is nearly concentration additive. Furthermore, results demonstrated the occurrence of synergistic interaction when non-equitoxic combinations of Banvel®-or DMA®-formulated herbicides were assayed. In this context and regardless of their concentrations, either Banvel®- or DMA®-induced toxicity were synergised by the presence of the counterpart within mixtures. The present study represents the first evidence of the lethality exerted by mixtures of two auxinic herbicides—namely, DIC and 2,4-D—reported to date for fish and other biotic matrices. When C. decemmaculatus is used as the target organism, a synergistic pattern is observed following exposure to a mixture of both herbicides.

A long-lasting high particulate matter (PM) concentration episode persisted over East Asia from May 24 to June 3, 2014. The Nested Air Quality Prediction Model System (NAQPMS) was used to investigate the mixing of dust and anthropogenic pollutants during this episode. Comparison of observations revealed that the NAQPMS successfully reproduced the time series PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ concentrations, as well as the nitrate and sulfate concentrations in fine (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm) and coarse mode (2.5 μm < aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm). This episode originated from two dust events that occurred in the inland desert areas of Mongolia and China, and then the long-range transported dust and anthropogenic pollutants were trapped over the downwind region of East Asia for more than one week due to the blocked north Pacific subtropical high-pressure system over the east of Japan. The model results showed that mineral dust accounted for 53–83% of PM₁₀, and 39–67% of PM₂.₅ over five cities in East Asia during this episode. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the Qingdao and Seoul regions experienced dust and pollution twice, by direct transport from the dust source region and from dust detoured over the Shanghai area. The results of the NAQPMS model confirmed the importance of dust heterogeneous reactions (HRs) over East Asia. Simulated dust NO₃⁻ concentrations accounted for 75% and 84% of total NO₃⁻ in fine and coarse mode, respectively, in Fukuoka, Japan. The horizontal distribution of model results revealed that the ratio of dust NO₃⁻/dust concentration increased from about 1% over the Chinese land mass to a maximum of 8% and 6% respectively in fine and coarse mode over the ocean to the southeast of Japan, indicating that dust NO₃⁻ was mainly formed over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea before reaching Japan.
