RESUMO O feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) é uma das mais importantes leguminosas produzidas em regiões tropicais e subtropicais do mundo, principalmente nos países em desenvolvimento da África, América Latina e Ásia. Para um grande segmento da população mundial é a principal fonte de proteínas, calorias, fibras alimentares, minerais e vitaminas. Possui ainda compostos bioativos, destacando-se os compostos fenólicos. É produzido no Norte e Nordeste, consumido também em outras regiões do país e apresenta grande importância para os agricultores que sobrevivem desta cultura. O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar e quantificar os compostos fenólicos no feijão-caupi, cultivar BRS Xiquexique. Tal determinação permitirá conhecer características funcionais do feijão-caupi, como fonte de antioxidantes, o que será de primordial importância para agregar valor funcional e nutricional a este alimento e ampliar as formas de consumo. Os extratos foram analisados por CLAE em equipamento modelo LC-20AT, com injetor manual. Para as análises foram preparadas soluções padrões com os ácidos fenólicos puros, tais como: ácido gálico, quercetina, ácido cafeico, ácido clorogênico, ácido ferúlico, ácido p-cumárico, catequina e epicatequina. Foram identificados catequina (2,07 ± 0,329 mg 100 g-1), epicatequina (0,48 ± 0,130 mg 100 g-1), ácido gálico (67,19 ± 6,200 mg 100 g-1), ácido ferúlico (32,07 ± 0,753 mg 100 g-1) e ácido clorogênico (3,08 ± 0,489 mg 100 g-1) em concentrações importantes. Concluiu-se que a cultivar BRS Xiquexique contêm compostos funcionais, destacando-se o ácido gálico e o ácido ferúlico com maiores teores, comprovando o potencial antioxidante do feijão-caupi. | ABSTRACT Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata [L.] Walp.) is one of the most important legumes produced in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world, especially in the developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the doses of maximum agronomic and economic efficiency as a function of different amounts of roostertree [Calotropis procera (Ait.) R.Br.] biomass added to the soil, that results in the maximum yield of green grains of cowpea in the semi-arid of Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The experiment was conducted at the “Rafael Fernandes” Experimental Farm of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Alagoinha, RN, from August to November 2013. In the experiment was used a randomized completely block design with 5 replicates. The treatments consisted of 20, 35, 50, and 65 t ha-1 (on a dry matter basis) of roostertree biomass added to the soil. The evaluated characteristics were: number of green pods per m2, productivity and dry mass of green pods, number of green grains per pod, weight of 100 green grains, and dry mass of green grains. The following economic indicators were determined: gross and net incomes, production operational costs, rate of return, and profit margin. The maximum agronomic efficiency of the yield of cowpea green grain was reached at the yield of 3.05 t ha-1, using 61.0 t ha-1 of roostertree biomass in the soil. The maximum economic efficiency yielded a net income of R$ 8,701.42, at the production of 3.02 t ha-1 green grains with 53.57 t ha-1 of roostertree biomass added to the soil. The use of roostertree as a green manure presents technical-economic feasibility in cowpea cultivation for green grains in the semi-arid conditions of Rio Grande do Norte. | RESUMO Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar as doses de eficiência agronômica e econômica máximas em função de diferentes quantidades de biomassa de flor-de-seda [Calotropis procera (Ait.) R.Br.] adicionadas ao solo, que resultem no rendimento máximo de grãos verdes de feijão caupi no semiárido do estado do Rio Grande Norte, Brasil. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental "Rafael Fernandes" da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Alagoinha, RN, no período de agosto a novembro de 2013. No experimento foi usado um delineamento de blocos completos casualizados com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de 20, 35, 50 e 65 t ha-1 (em base seca) de biomassa de flor-de-seda adicionada ao solo. As características avaliadas foram: número de vagens verdes por m2, produtividade e massa seca de vagens verdes, número de grãos verdes por vagem, peso de 100 grãos verdes e massa seca de grãos verdes. Os seguintes indicadores econômicos foram determinados: rendas bruta e líquida, custos operacionais de produção, taxa de retorno e índice de lucratividade. A eficiência agronômica máxima do rendimento de grãos verdes de feijão-caupi foi alcançada com o rendimento de 3,05 t ha-1, utilizando-se 61,0 t ha-1 de biomassa de flor-de-seda incorporada ao solo. A eficiência econômica máxima produziu uma renda liquida de R$ 8.701,42, no rendimento de grãos verdes de 3.02 t ha-1 com 53,57 t ha-1 de biomassa de flor-de-seda adicionada ao solo. O uso da flor-de-seda como adubo verde apresenta viabilidade técnico-econômica no cultivo do feijão-caupi para grãos verdes nas condições semiáridas do Rio Grande do Norte.

We evaluated two crop systems (conventional and no tillage) and three water conditions (no stress, moderate stress and severe stress). The following were determined: leaf area, total dry matter, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, internal CO2 concentration and leaf water potential. Water stress affected all variables evaluated, with the exception of leaf water potential. Cowpea recovered with respect to all variables after rehydration at both stress levels. Stomatal closure is an important drought tolerance mechanism, and cowpea can be considered a conservative species (i.e., one that prioritizes water status maintenance rather than photosynthetic rate). Planting systems did not affect photosynthetic rate. The tillage system promoted greater accumulation of biomass and higher leaf area. | RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as respostas fisiológicas em feijão-caupi sob efeito de estresse hídrico e reidratação nos sistemas de plantio direto (PD) e convencional (PC). Foram avaliados dois sistemas de plantio (direto e convencional) e três condições hídricas (sem estresse, estresse moderado e estresse severo). Foram determinados: área foliar, matéria seca total, fotossíntese, condutância estomática, transpiração, concentração interna de CO2 e potencial hídrico foliar. O estresse hídrico afetou todas as variáveis avaliadas, com exceção do potencial hídrico foliar. Houve recuperação de todas as variáveis após reidratação em ambos níveis de estresse. O fechamento estomático é um importante mecanismo de tolerância à seca, sendo que o feijão-caupi pode ser considerado uma espécie conservadora, i.e. que prioriza a manutenção do status hídrico em detrimento da produção fotossintética. Os sistemas de plantio não afetaram as taxas fotossintéticas. O sistema de plantio direto promove maior acúmulo de biomassa e maior área foliar.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of elite-strains of cowpea cultivars under the conditions of the north of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. Fifteen elite-strains and five erect and semi-erect cultivars of cowpea were evaluated in the 2014 and 2015 summer-fall crop seasons in Janaúba MG. A randomized block experimental design was used with four replications. Plant size, lodging and value of cultivation, pod length and grain yield were evaluated. The data of the two crops were subjected to individual and joint analysis of variance. The genotype-crop interactions significantly affected all studied variables. The strains MNC04-792F-146 and MNC04-792F-144 stood out as the most productive genotypes in both crops. The cultivars BRS Itaim and BRS Novaera presented adequate size and lodging characteristics for cultivation, and values of cultivation that meet commercial standards, thus representing good alternatives for the genotypes cultivated in the north of Minas Gerais. | RESUMO Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a performance agronômica de linhagens-elite e cultivares de feijão-caupi, nas condições de cultivo do Norte de Minas Gerais. Foram avaliadas 15 linhagens-elite e cinco cultivares de feijão-caupi de portes ereto e semiereto, nas safras de verão-outono de 2014 e 2015, em Janaúba, MG. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados o porte da planta, o grau de acamamento e o valor de cultivo, o comprimento da vagem e o rendimento de grãos. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos a análises de variância individuais e conjunta, envolvendo as duas safras de cultivo. Verificou-se efeito significativo para a interação entre genótipos e safras para todas as variáveis estudadas. As linhagens MNC04-792F-146 e MNC04-792F-144 destacaram-se por estarem entre os genótipos mais produtivos nas duas safras avaliadas. As cultivares BRS Itaim e BRS Novaera apresentaram simultaneamente características de porte e acamamento adequadas para o cultivo, além de obterem valor de cultivo compatível com o padrão comercial, representando boas alternativas de cultivo no Norte de Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT Cowpea is broadly cultivated worldwide, especially in semi-arid or arid regions where soil or irrigation water salt contents can negatively influence the species’ productive capacity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphophysiological responses of cowpea genotypes to irrigation water salinity. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, under a completely randomized design with nine replications and in a 5x3 factorial scheme. Treatments consisted of five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - EC (EC0: 0.55; EC1: 1.60; EC2: 3.20; EC3: 4.80 and EC4: 6.40 dS m-1), applied from the 15th day after sowing (DAS), and three cowpea genotypes (G1: BRS Imponente; G2: MNC04-795F-168 and G3: MNC04-795F-159). EC increases at 35 DAS promoted stem diameter reductions of 8.0% (G1), 11.4% (G2), and 7.7% (G3), indicating different resistance to salinity by each genotype. Leaf area reductions at 25 and 38 DAS were 30.9% and 38.8% for EC0 and EC4, respectively. The BRS Imponente cultivar presented a performance superior to those of G2 and G3 in relation to stem diameter and stem dry matter at 25 DAS, and root-shoot and root-leaf ratios at 38 DAS. | RESUMO O feijão-caupi é bastante cultivado no mundo, principalmente em regiões semiáridas ou áridas onde o teor de sais presentes no solo ou na água de irrigação pode influenciar negativamente na capacidade produtiva da espécie. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho, avaliar as respostas morfofisiológicas de genótipos de feijão-caupi à salinidade da água de irrigação. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com nove repetições, em esquema fatorial 5x3, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CE (CE0: 0,55; CE1: 1,60; CE2: 3,20; CE3: 4,80 e CE4: 6,40 dS m-1) aplicados a partir do 15º dia após a semeadura (DAS) e três genótipos de feijão-caupi (G1: BRS Imponente; G2: MNC04-795F-168 e G3: MNC04-795F-159). Aumentos nas CE aos 35 DAS, promoveram reduções no diâmetro do caule de 8,0% (G1), 11,4% (G2) e 7,7% (G3) indicando resistências diferenciadas dos genótipos aos efeitos da salinidade. Entre CE0 e CE4 as reduções na área foliar aos 25 e 38 DAS foram de 30,9% e 38,8%, respectivamente. Os efeitos negativos da salinidade foram mais intensos nas matérias secas da raiz e da haste, aos 20 DAS e na matéria seca das folhas, aos 30 DAS. A cultivar BRS Imponente apresenta desempenho superior a G2 e G3 em relação ao diâmetro do caule e matéria seca da haste, aos 25 DAS, e razão parte aérea raiz e folha raiz, aos 38 DAS.

Cowpea is broadly cultivated worldwide, especially in semi-arid or arid regions where soil or irrigation water salt contents can negatively influence the species’ productive capacity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphophysiological responses of cowpea genotypes to irrigation water salinity. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, under a completely randomized design with nine replications and in a 5x3 factorial scheme. Treatments consisted of five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - EC (EC0: 0.55; EC1: 1.60; EC2: 3.20; EC3: 4.80 and EC4: 6.40 dS m-1), applied from the 15th day after sowing (DAS), and three cowpea genotypes (G1: BRS Imponente; G2: MNC04-795F-168 and G3: MNC04-795F-159). EC increases at 35 DAS promoted stem diameter reductions of 8.0% (G1), 11.4% (G2), and 7.7% (G3), indicating different resistance to salinity by each genotype. Leaf area reductions at 25 and 38 DAS were 30.9% and 38.8% for EC0 and EC4, respectively. The BRS Imponente cultivar presented a performance superior to those of G2 and G3 in relation to stem diameter and stem dry matter at 25 DAS, and root-shoot and root-leaf ratios at 38 DAS.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi é uma leguminosa de grande importância socioeconômica para as regiões Norte e Nordeste do Brasil. Entretanto, ainda necessita de mais estudos que avaliem seu desempenho produtivo quando cultivado em regime irrigado e sob diferentes densidades de plantas. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar os efeitos de diferentes regimes hídricos e densidades de plantas na produtividade de grãos, componentes de produção e eficiência do uso de água, bem como a correlação da produtividade de grãos com os componentes de produção da cultivar de feijão-caupi BRS Tumucumaque. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da Embrapa Meio-Norte, Teresina, Piauí, de junho a setembro de 2017, em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo eutrófico. Utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos casualizados, sob esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições, em que os regimes hídricos ocuparam as parcelas (187,7; 233,5; 263,5 e 288,7 mm) e as densidades de plantas, as subparcelas (12; 16; 20 e 24 plantas m-2). Foram avaliados o número de vagens por planta, o número de vagens por metro quadrado, o comprimento de vagens, a produtividade de grãos secos e a eficiência de uso da água. A máxima produtividade de grãos foi de 1.694,46 kg ha-1 com aplicação da lâmina de 288,7 mm e a densidade de 20,4 plantas m-2. O componente de produção número de vagens por metro quadrado foi o que mais se correlacionou com a produtividade de grãos. | ABSTRACT Cowpea is a legume of great socioeconomic importance for the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. However, studies to evaluate its production performance when cultivated under irrigated regime and under different plant densities are necessary. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different water regimes and different plant densities on grain yield, production components and water use efficiency, and on the correlation between grain yield and production components of BRS Tumucumaque cowpea cultivar. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Meio-Norte experimental area, in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil, from June to September 2017, in an Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo eutrófico (Ultisol). A randomized complete block design was used, in a split-plot scheme with four replicates, in which the water regimes occupied the plots (187.7; 233.5; 263.5 and 288.7 mm) and plant densities, the subplots (12; 16; 20 and 24 plants m-2). The number of pods per plant, number of pods per square meter, pod length, dry grain yield and water use efficiency were evaluated. The maximum dry grain yield reached was 1,694.46 kg ha-1, with application of 288.7 mm and density of 20.4 plants m-2. The production component number of pods per square meter was the most correlated with dry grain yield.

RESUMO Variedades tradicionais são fontes de variabilidade genética, principalmente no que se refere a alelos que conferem tolerância a fatores bióticos e abióticos e, portanto, podem auxiliar os programas de melhoramento no desenvolvimento de cultivares promissoras. Contudo, torna-se necessário conhecer esse patrimônio genético em nível que permita sua pretensa utilização em programas de melhoramento genético. Assim, objetivou-se com esse estudo: (i) identificar variedades tradicionais de feijão-caupi que apresentem potencial agronômico e (ii) avaliar a diversidade genética das mesmas para orientação de futuros cruzamentos. Para tal, dois ensaios (litoral e sertão do estado do Ceará) foram realizados em períodos distintos para a caracterização morfoagronômica de oito variedades tradicionais do estado do Ceará mais duas cultivares testemunhas. Ambos os ensaios foram realizados no delineamento em blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Adicionalmente, foi feita a caracterização molecular por marcadores ISSR. Devido a presença de interação genótipos por ambientes, observou-se que para as condições do litoral (Fortaleza), a variedade tradicional Boi Deitado foi a mais indicada, e para as condições do sertão (Madalena) foi a Vinagre Barrigudo de Caldo, por serem superiores quanto ao rendimento de grãos e quanto a outros caracteres agronômicos. Buscando ampliar a base genética do feijão-caupi, sugerem-se cruzamentos entre os genótipos Boi deitado e Cojó para a geração de populações segregantes em futuros programas de melhoramento. | ABSTRACT Landraces are sources of genetic variability, especially with respect to alleles that confer tolerance to biotic and abiotic factors and, therefore, can aid breeding programs in the development of promising cultivars. However, it is necessary to know this genetic patrimony at a level that allows its alleged use in breeding programs. In this sense, the objective of this study was: (i) to identify cowpea landraces that present agronomic potential and (ii) to evaluate the genetic diversity for future cross-breeding. For this, two trials (coastal and sertão of the state of Ceará) were carried out in distinct periods for the morphological and agronomic characterization of eight landraces of the state of Ceará plus two control cultivars. Both assays were conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Additionally, the molecular characterization by ISSR markers was done. Due to the presence of interaction genotypes by environments, it was observed for the conditions of the coast (Fortaleza), the traditional variety Boi Deitado and the conditions of the sertão (Madalena) to Vinagre Barrigudo de Caldo, as the most indicated to be superior in grain yield and in other agronomic characters. In order to increase the genetic base of the cowpea, we suggest crosses between genotypes Boi deitado and Cojó for the generation of segregating populations of future breeding programs.

ABSTRACT Cowpea has great socioeconomic importance, especially in the North and Northeast of Brazil, and its genetic improvement has become increasingly relevant. This study aimed to assess the genetic divergence among cowpea genotypes of the active germplasm bank of the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco to indicate the most divergent and productive as parents aiming at enriching its breeding program in this institution. The experiment was carried out at the experimental station of Itapirema, Goiana, PE, in a randomized block design with four replications. Thirty genotypes were used in the study, being two of them the controls (Miranda IPA 207 and Paulistinha). The parameters flowering, number of pods per peduncle, number of pods per plant, pod length, ten pod weight, grain index, number of grains in ten pods, hundred-grain weight, grain yield per hectare, plant habit, color of flowers, leaves, pods, and grains, and grain shape were assessed. Genetic divergence was observed among the cowpea genotypes. Pod length and weight, flowering, hundred-grain weight, and the number of pods per plant were the main contributors to genetic divergence. Crosses indicated to enable new gene combinations more favorable for cowpea are Pitiúba x Cabeçudo, Pitiúba x Manteiga, and Pitiúba x Costela de Vaca. | RESUMO O feijão-caupi possui grande importância socioeconômica, principalmente nas regiões Norte/Nordeste do Brasil. Devido a este fator o melhoramento genético dessa espécie vem se tornando cada vez mais relevante. O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a divergência genética entre genótipos de feijão-caupi do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma do Instituto Agronômico de Pernambuco (IPA), a fim de indicar os mais divergentes e produtivos como genitores de forma a enriquecer o programa de melhoramento da cultura nessa instituição. O ensaio foi conduzido na Estação experimental de Itapirema (IPA), Goiana-PE, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Utilizaram-se 30 genótipos sendo duas testemunhas (Miranda IPA 207 e Paulistinha). Foram avaliados: início de floração, número de vagem/pedúnculo, número de vagem/planta, comprimento médio de vagem, peso de dez vagens, peso dos grãos de dez vagens, índice de grãos, número de grãos em dez vagens, peso de cem grãos, rendimento de grãos/hectare, porte, cor da flor, da folha, da vagem e do grão e a forma do grão. Existe divergência genética entre os genótipos de feijão-caupi avaliados. As características peso de vagem, início da floração, comprimento da vagem, peso de cem grãos e número de vagens por planta foram as que mais contribuíram para a divergência genética. Os cruzamentos indicados para viabilizar novas combinações gênicas mais favoráveis são: Pitiúba x Cabeçudo, Pitiúba x Manteiga e Pitiúba x Costela de Vaca.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade física e fisiológica de sementes salvas de feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) utilizadas no semiárido brasileiro e compará-las com as variedades de sementes certificadas. Foram testadas 37 amostras de sementes salvas oriundas de diferentes municípios do Rio Grande do Norte e duas variedades de sementes certificadas (BRS Guariba e BRS Pujante), provenientes do campo de produção da Embrapa Produtos e Mercado, Petrolina, PE. Para avaliação da qualidade física, as sementes foram submetidas aos testes de grau de umidade, peso hectolítrico, peso de mil sementes e pureza física. Na avaliação da qualidade fisiológica testou-se a germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência em campo, índice de velocidade de emergência, matéria seca de parte aérea e envelhecimento acelerado. As sementes salvas de feijão-caupi apresentaram grandes diferenças, sugerindo tanto a influência da variabilidade genética como dos diferentes ambientes de cultivo. A utilização de sementes salvas de feijão-caupi pelos pequenos produtores das áreas semiáridas do nordeste do Brasil se constitui em prática inviável por se tratar de sementes de qualidades física e fisiológica inferiores às sementes de origem certificadas. | ABSTRACT This study evaluated the physical and physiological attributes of saved cowpea seeds (Vigna unguiculata L. RESUMO A salinidade é prejudicial ao desenvolvimento vegetal, causando diferentes danos às espécies, ou até mesmo entre genótipos da mesma espécie, com os efeitos sendo agravados quando combinado a outro estresse, como o térmico. Objetivou-se avaliar a tolerância ao estresse salino de genótipos de feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) em diferentes temperaturas. As sementes dos genótipos Pujante, Epace 10 e Marataoã foram semeadas em rolos de papel (Germitest®), umedecidos com diferentes concentrações salinas de 0,0 (controle); 1,5; 3,0, 4,5 e 6,0 dS m-1, acondicionados em câmara de germinação (B.O.D.) nas temperaturas de 20, 25, 30 e 35 ºC. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em parcela subdividida no esquema de 3×4×5, com quatro repetições por tratamento. As variáveis analisadas foram porcentagem de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz e massa seca total da plântula. Nas condições de temperaturas de 30 e 35 °C, o aumento da concentração salina foi mais prejudicial à germinação dos genótipos Epace 10 e Pujante, enquanto para o Marataoã isto ocorreu na temperatura de 20 °C. Na temperatura de 25 °C a germinação e o vigor dos genótipos foram maiores, sendo que, o genótipo Pujante mostrou-se mais tolerante ao estresse salino, enquanto Epace 10 e Marataoã a temperaturas elevadas. A germinação dos genótipos de feijão-caupi foi mais sensível ao estresse salino quando submetidas ao estresse térmico, causado por temperatura baixa de 20 °C ou elevada de 35 °C. | ABSTRACT Salinity is prejudicial to plant development, causing different types of damage to species, or even between genotypes of the same species, with the effects being aggravated when combined with other types of stress, such as heat stress.
