ABSTRACT The production of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) for fresh consumption must overcome a challenge: the high production cost. The use of cultivars with determinate growth habit is an alternative to reduce costs. Thus, the objective this work was to evaluate the acceptability of tomato fruits from cultivars with determinate growth habit for fresh consumption. Seeds of 10 hybrids and one variety were grown in open field, arranged in six randomized block design, and tested for sensorial acceptability. The analyses were carried out using 50 not-trained consumers, considering their visual and sensorial preferences by affective methods and purchase intention. The hybrid Thaise grown with and without staking and the hybrid Gabrielle grown with staking had higher visual preference by the consumers, with frequency of 24%, 18%, and 22%, respectively, in the first position; and the hybrid Dominador showed higher frequency (18%) in the second and third positions; these hybrids had purchase intention above 80%. All hybrids and varieties had significant difference in the mean test at p<0.05. The highest means found for Carrara, HM7885, Santa Cruz Kada, Asti, N901, Dominador, and Equatorial (appearance); Asti and N901 (color), Asti, Dominador, and Equatorial (aroma), and Santa Cruz Kada, Asti, Dominador, and Equatorial (flavor). Asti, Gabrielle (grown without staking), HM7885, and Equatorial had purchase intention above of 50%. The hybrids Ap533, Portinari, and Thaise grown without staking showed acceptability index lower than 70%. Plants with determinate growth habit produce fruits with acceptable visual and sensorial qualities for fresh consumption.

| ABSTRACT Our study was conducted in the experimental field of the Department of Technology and Social Sciences (DTCS) of the State University of Bahia - UNEB, Juazeiro-BA. The experimental design was comprised of randomized blocks, sub-subdivided in plots, with four replicates comprising the plots of three different shading methods, gray shading screen (GS), red shading screen (RS), and blue shading screen (BS), and the control treatment with no shading. The subplots comprised three mini-tomato cultivars (“Sweet Million”, “Red Sugar”, and “Shani”), and sub-subplots consisted of seven sampling times. The traits evaluated were: dry matter accumulation in leaves, stems, roots, and fruits, total dry matter, shoot length, root length, total number of fruits, and overall yield. The results of the growth analysis showed that dry matter accumulation in organs of mini tomatoes was similar in all treatments and that the highest total dry matter accumulation occurred under RS. In all treatments, fruit was the preferential drainage; however, the cultivar “Red Sugar” showed higher dry matter accumulation in other plant organs. “Red Sugar” also showed the highest number of fruits per plant; however, when we evaluated total productivity, “Sweet Million” and “Shani” showed similar, higher values than “Red Sugar”.

| ABSTRACT This paper aimed to assess tomato grafting on different solanaceous species through two grafting methods. Scions were cut from cultivar Santa Cruz Kada seedlings. A fully randomized experimental design was carried out with treatments in a 9 x 2 factorial scheme. As rootstocks, four accessions of mini-tomatoes (0224-53, RVTC 57, RVTC 20 and 6889-50 - Solanum lycopersicum L); two species of wild tomato (Solanum habrochaites var hirsutum ‘PI-127826’ and Solanum pennellii ‘LA716’); other two tomato species [Solanum, cocona (Solanum sessiliflorum) and physalis (Physalis peruviana)] and a control with cultivar Santa Cruz Kada (auto-graft) rootstocks were used. In addition, two grafting methods were evaluated full cleft and approach graft. Fifteen days after grafting, plants were assessed for graft-take percentage; root length; plant height; leaf number; foliar area; root, stem and leaf dry matter; and ratio between shoot and root dry matter. Based on the results, we may state rootstock and grafting interaction had effect on both graft -take rate and plant development. Overall, the studied plants should be recommended as rootstock, except for 6889-50 mini-tomato (S. lycopersicum L.) and S. pennellii. Full cleft grafting was most suitable for cocona and physalis, while the approach method showed better results for the mini-tomato accessions 0224-53, RVTC 57 and RVTC 20, as well as for S. habrochaites.

ABSTRACT The use of intercropping system allows crops to better utilize inputs supplied and the productive capacity of the area, which can be advantageous to the farmer. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the production performance of eggplant and industrial tomato intercropped as a function of the date of eggplant transplantation compared with tomato transplantation, in two seasons. Ten dates of eggplant transplantation were evaluated (-30, -25, -20, -15, -10, -5, 0, + 5, +10 and +15 days compared with tomato transplantation), with the first season from February to September 2009 and the second from August 2009 to February 2010. The number of commercial fruits per plant, commercial yield per plant and commercial yield of eggplant and tomato were influenced by the date of transplanting of eggplant. Highest eggplant yields were obtained in the second season, due to the more favorable weather conditions for the development of this crop. Late eggplant transplants resulted in yield losses due to tomato interference. For tomatoes, the later the eggplant was transplanted, the higher the yield. Therefore, it is concluded that the species have a high degree of interference with each other and the variation in the time of eggplant transplantation influenced the production characters of both crops. In terms of production, the intercropping of these species may not be economically viable for the farmer due to negative influences on the growth, development and production of these crops.
