ABSTRACT Cowpea is broadly cultivated worldwide, especially in semi-arid or arid regions where soil or irrigation water salt contents can negatively influence the species’ productive capacity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphophysiological responses of cowpea genotypes to irrigation water salinity. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, under a completely randomized design with nine replications and in a 5x3 factorial scheme. Treatments consisted of five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - EC (EC0: 0.55; EC1: 1.60; EC2: 3.20; EC3: 4.80 and EC4: 6.40 dS m-1), applied from the 15th day after sowing (DAS), and three cowpea genotypes (G1: BRS Imponente; G2: MNC04-795F-168 and G3: MNC04-795F-159). EC increases at 35 DAS promoted stem diameter reductions of 8.0% (G1), 11.4% (G2), and 7.7% (G3), indicating different resistance to salinity by each genotype. Leaf area reductions at 25 and 38 DAS were 30.9% and 38.8% for EC0 and EC4, respectively. The BRS Imponente cultivar presented a performance superior to those of G2 and G3 in relation to stem diameter and stem dry matter at 25 DAS, and root-shoot and root-leaf ratios at 38 DAS. | RESUMO O feijão-caupi é bastante cultivado no mundo, principalmente em regiões semiáridas ou áridas onde o teor de sais presentes no solo ou na água de irrigação pode influenciar negativamente na capacidade produtiva da espécie. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho, avaliar as respostas morfofisiológicas de genótipos de feijão-caupi à salinidade da água de irrigação. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com nove repetições, em esquema fatorial 5x3, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CE (CE0: 0,55; CE1: 1,60; CE2: 3,20; CE3: 4,80 e CE4: 6,40 dS m-1) aplicados a partir do 15º dia após a semeadura (DAS) e três genótipos de feijão-caupi (G1: BRS Imponente; G2: MNC04-795F-168 e G3: MNC04-795F-159). Aumentos nas CE aos 35 DAS, promoveram reduções no diâmetro do caule de 8,0% (G1), 11,4% (G2) e 7,7% (G3) indicando resistências diferenciadas dos genótipos aos efeitos da salinidade. Entre CE0 e CE4 as reduções na área foliar aos 25 e 38 DAS foram de 30,9% e 38,8%, respectivamente. Os efeitos negativos da salinidade foram mais intensos nas matérias secas da raiz e da haste, aos 20 DAS e na matéria seca das folhas, aos 30 DAS. A cultivar BRS Imponente apresenta desempenho superior a G2 e G3 em relação ao diâmetro do caule e matéria seca da haste, aos 25 DAS, e razão parte aérea raiz e folha raiz, aos 38 DAS.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to define areas suitable, and the irrigation water requirement for, cultivation of Tanzania guineagrass in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Tanzania guineagrass yield was estimated by a mathematical model, which considers the crop actual evapotranspiration, resulting from the crop climatological water balance. The water requirement throughout the year was estimated for soils with a water holding capacity of 20 (shallow soils), 40 (sandy soils), 60 (soils with medium texture) and 100 mm (clay soils). The relative frequency of occurrence of monthly productions greater than 2,750 kg DM ha-1 month-1 was obtained for different areas in Ceará, representative of most of the state's economic mesoregions. Tanzania guineagrass annual yields in the state of Ceará were between 20,000-30,000 kg DM ha-1 year-1. During the rainy season, the productive potential varies with the economic mesoregion, which presents different climatic conditions. The state of Ceará is only suitable for the rainfed production of Tanzania guineagrass for 4 months each year, predominantly from February to May, while weather conditions do not favor the development of this grass in the remaining months. | RESUMO O objetivo desse trabalho foi delimitar áreas aptas e o requerimento hídrico de irrigação para cultivo do capim Tanzânia no estado do Ceará. A produtividade do capim Tanzânia foi obtida a partir de um modelo matemático que assume os valores da evapotranspiração real, resultante do balanço hídrico climatológico da cultura. A necessidade hídrica para reposição de água ao longo do ano para solos com capacidade de água disponível de 20 (solos rasos), 40 (solos arenosos), 60 (solos de textura média) e 100 mm (solos argilosos). A partir da TAMS obteve-se a frequência relativa de ocorrência de produtividade mensal em diferentes municípios Cearense. Os valores de produtividade do capim Tanzânia no estado do Ceará predominaram entre 20.000 e 30.000 kg MS ha-1 ano-1. Durante os meses chuvosos o potencial produtivo varia em função da mesorregião econômica, as quais apresentam condições climáticas distintas. Portanto, o estado do Ceará possui aptidão para produção do capim Tanzânia, sob regime de sequeiro, durante apenas quatro meses, predominantemente, de fevereiro a maio, sendo que as condições climáticas não favorecem o desenvolvimento do capim nos demais meses.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effect of cooking on the centesimal compositions, the content of bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities in beans of the cowpea cultivars. The beans were cooked without soaking (1:5 w/v) in a pressure cooker for 780 seconds. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test to determine the difference between means of raw and cooked beans. One-way ANOVA: post-hoc Tukey’s test was applied at 5% to compare the data of the cultivars. Significant difference (p 0.05) was noted between the moisture contents of samples, with values ranging from 10.69 to 11.37% in the raw beans and 63.32 to 75.43% in the cooked ones. Only BRS Marataoã showed a slight reduction (1.24%) in the energy value. The total polyphenol content in cooked beans decreased on discarding the broth. BRS Marataoã showed the highest levels of total polyphenols and flavonoids in raw beans, cooked beans, and broth. The raw beans of the cultivar BRS Itaim had greater content of condensed tannins and total anthocyanins. The raw beans, cooked beans, and broth showed statistically significant differences between their antioxidant activities, and the best results were found in the samples not subjected to thermal processing, particularly in BRS Marataoã. In conclusion, cooking influenced the concentration of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities of the beans. Therefore, it is recommended that cooked cowpea beans should be consumed with the cooking broth for optimization of antioxidants. | RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou verificar o efeito da cocção na composição centesimal, no conteúdo de compostos bioativos e na atividade antioxidante em grãos de cultivares de feijão-caupi. Estes foram cozidos sem maceração (1:5 p/v) em panela de pressão por 780 segundos. Na análise estatística utilizou-se o teste t de Student para verificar diferença entre a média dos grãos crus e cozidos. Por meio do método de one-way ANOVA: post-hoc, aplicou-se o teste de médias de Tukey ao nível de 5% para as demais variáveis. Em relação à composição centesimal, houve diferença significativa (p<0,05) apenas para o teor de umidade, com valores de 10,69 a 11,37% nos grãos crus e 63,32 a 75,43% nos cozidos. Apenas a cultivar BRS Marataoã apresentou discreta redução (1,24%) no valor energético. Quanto aos polifenóis totais, observou-se uma diminuição do conteúdo nos grãos cozidos, com retenção no caldo. A cultivar BRS Marataoã destacou-se com os maiores teores de polifenóis totais e flavonóides totais nos grãos crus, cozidos e caldo. Observou-se, nos grãos crus da cultivar BRS Itaim os maiores teores de taninos condensados e antocianinas totais. Os grãos crus, cozidos e caldo apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significativa na atividade antioxidante, sendo os melhores resultados nas amostras sem tratamento térmico, com destaque para a BRS Marataoã. Concluiu-se que o cozimento influenciou a concentração dos compostos bioativos e a atividade antioxidante dos grãos, recomendando-se o consumo do feijão-caupi com o caldo de cocção para aproveitamento dos compostos antioxidantes.

RESUMO O uso de elicitores em plantas para o controle de doenças tem demonstrado ação no acúmulo de fitoalexinas. Dentre estes, produtos do metabolismo de fungos apresentam eficiência na ativação de mecanismos de resistência induzida das plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de filtrados dos fungos sapróbios Curvularia inaequalis, Pseudobitritis terrestris, Memnomiella echinata e Curvularia eragrostidis na indução de faseolina, gliceolina e deoxiantocianidinas. Para isso, discos de micélio dos fungos foram repicados em meio líquido BD (batata e dextrose) e mantidos em B.O.D. a 25 ºC, 12h luz/escuro. Após 20 dias foi realizada filtragem e utilizado os filtrados nos experimentos. A faseolina foi determinada em hipocótilos estiolados de feijão. Para avaliação da gliceolina, foram utilizados cotilédones de plântulas de soja. O acúmulo de deoxiantocianidinas foi avaliado em mesocótilos estiolados de sorgo. Os Resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância e comparados pelo teste de regressão (p<0,05). Os filtrados dos fungos sapróbios C. erogrostis, C. inaequalis, P. terrestris e M. echinata promoveram maior incremento no acúmulo de faseolina nas concentrações 9, 8, 9 e 7%, respecivamente. O acúmulo de gliceolina variou com as concentrações dos sapróbios C. erogrostis, C. inaequalis e P. terrestris, ajustando-se o comportamento ao modelo cúbico. O acúmulo de deoxiantocianidinas aumentou conforme a concentração, enquanto os filtrados de M. echinata e C. eragrostidis promoveram aumento de 2 e 3 vezes mais que a aplicação de água. A aplicação dos filtrados de P. terrestris, C. eragrostidis, C. inaequalis e M. echinata induziram o acúmulo de fitoalexinas em soja, feijão e sorgo. | ABSTRACT The use of elicitors in plants for disease control is demonstrated by the accumulation of phytoalexins. Among these elicitors, metabolic products from fungi have been shown to be effective in the activation of mechanisms of induced resistance. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of filtrates from the saprobic fungi Curvularia inaequalis, Pseudobotrytis terrestris, Memnoniella echinata and Curvularia eragrostidis in inducing phaseolin, glyceolin and deoxyanthocyanidins. For this, fungal mycelial disks were liquid-subcultured in potato dextrose (BD) media and maintained in BOD at 25 °C and 12 h of light and darkness. After 20 days, the cultures were filtered and, the filtrates were used in the experiments. Phaseolin was measured in etiolated hypocotyls of bean. For glyceolin evaluation, cotyledons of soybean were used. The deoxyanthocyanidin accumulation was evaluated in etiolated mesocotyls of sorghum. The results were subjected to analysis of variance and compared by regression tests (p < 0.05). The filtrates of the saprobic fungi C. eragrostidis, C. inaequalis, P. terrestris and M. echinata promoted 9, 8, 9 and 7% greater increases in the concentration of phaseolin accumulations, respectively. The glyceolin accumulation varied with the concentration of C. eragrostidis, C. inaequalis and P. terrestris by adjusting the behavior to a cubic model. The deoxyanthocyanidin accumulation increased with concentration, while the filtrates of M. echinata and C. eragrostidis promoted 2 to 3 times more increases than the application of water. The filtrates of P. terrestris, C. eragrostidis, C. inaequalis and M. echinata induced accumulations of phytoalexins in soybean, beans and sorghum.

This work evaluated the effect of soil water availability on growth and productivity variables of cowpea in northeastern Pará, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a field of 2,100 m2 at the experimental site of the Federal Rural University of Amazon, during the driest season of the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, in a completely randomised design with two treatments (irrigated and non-irrigated), both with 12 replications in the reproductive phase (2012 and 2013). Growth and productivity data were submitted to analysis of variance with two variation factors (water regime and experimental year) at 5% probability. Student's t -test at 5% probability was used in the means of the stomatal conductance data, since this was monitored only in 2012. Final biomass production presented a reduction of 54.3% in 2012 and 26.4% in 2013 as a result of water deficit (DEF) of 76 and 26 mm, respectively. Mean stomatal conductance was reduced by 73% in the grain-filling stage as a result of the lower water availability during this period. Average cowpea productivity under water deficit reached 1,257 kg ha-1 in 2012 and 1,396 kg ha-1 in 2013. The reduction in water supply over the reproductive period significantly decreased production by 72 and 41% (F test, p < 0.05) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. An accumulated water deficit during the reproductive phase caused a maximum LAI reduction of 47% in 2012 (DEF of 76 mm) and of 13% in 2013 (DEF of 26 mm).

The objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds of organic cherry tomatoes grown under fertigation with organic dairy cattle wastewater (DCW) with different nitrogen rates. Tomato plants, grown in an agroecological farm in Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were subjected to four different nitrogen rates (T1=0, T2=50, T3=100 and T4=150% of N). The moisture, lipids, ashes, protein and total fiber contents, soluble solids (ºBrix), reducing and total sugars (%), pH and total titratable acidity (mg NaOH per 100 g) were evaluated. The total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant capacity was determined by the DPPH and FRAP methods. The different nitrogen rates (%N) affected the pH, protein and soluble solids contents. The increase in %N increased the antioxidant capacities, according to the DPPH assay, and TPC. On the other hand, the tomatoes under fertigation with the highest %N presented lower antioxidant capacities according to the FRAP assay. The fertigation did not affect the microbiological characteristics of the tomatoes, which presented fecal coliforms count <3 NMP g-1 and absence of Salmonella in 25 g.

The use of chemical seed treatment is an important tool in the protection of seedlings and has contributed to the increase of rice yield (Oryza sativa L.). The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality and quantify the retention of chemical products in rice seeds treated with insecticide and fungicide coated with polymers. Six seed treatments were used: control, phytosanitary treatment and phytosanitary treatment and coating with the polymers, Florite 1127®, GV5® Solid Resin, Polyseed CF® and VermDynaseed®. The physiological quality was evaluated by the test of germination and vigor by first count tests, germination speed index, shoot length, radicle length, seedling dry mass and sand emergence. To determine the retention of the active ingredients metalaxyl-M and thiamethoxam, an equipment called extractor was used. The experiment was organized in a completely randomized design (DIC) and the averages were separated by the Scott Knott test (p≤0.05). Seed treatment with the fungicide and insecticide, coated with the polymers, Florite 1127®, Solid Resin GV5®, Polyseed CF® and VermDynaseed®, did not affect the physiological quality of rice seeds. Solid Resin GV5®, Polyseed CF® and VermDynaseed® polymers were efficient at retaining thiamethoxam in the rice seeds, preventing some of the active ingredients of the insecticide from being leached through the sand columns immediately after the simulated pluvial precipitation.

Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica e quantificar a retenção de produtos químicos em sementes de arroz tratadas com inseticida e fungicida recobertas com polímeros. Foram utilizados seis tratamentos de sementes: controle, tratamento fitossanitário e tratamento fitossanitário e recobrimento com os polímeros, Florite 1127®, Resina Sólida GV5®, Polyseed CF® e o VermDynaseed®. A qualidade fisiológica foi avaliada pelo teste de germinação e vigor pelos testes de primeira contagem, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento de parte aérea, comprimento de radícula, massa seca de plântulas e emergência em areia. Para determinar a retenção dos ingredientes ativos metalaxil-M e thiamethoxam, utilizou-se equipamento denominado extrator. O experimento foi organizado no delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC) e as médias foram separadas pelo Scott Knott (p≤0,05).O tratamento de sementes com o fungicida e inseticida, recobertos com os polímeros,Florite 1127®, ResinSolid GV5®, Polyseed CF® e o VermDynaseed®, não afetaram a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de arroz. Os polímeros ResinSolid GV5®, Polyseed CF® e o VermDynaseed® foram eficientes na retenção do thiamethoxam junto às sementes de arroz, impedindo que parte do ingrediente ativo do inseticida fosse lixiviado, através das colunas de areia, logo após a precipitação pluvial simulada.

The present study was conducted with the objective of analyzing the covariance structure and repeatability estimates of the variables related to guava productivity, such as fruit weight (FW), fruit number (FN) and fruit production (FP) of three harvests, in 95 genotypes of a segregating population. The study also aims to choose the most appropriate covariance structure of the observations within the same individual by means of AIC (Akaike's Information Criterion) and SBC (Schwarz's Bayesian Criterion) criteria. A covariance structure between repeated measures could be incorporated into the statistical model, with the self-regression and compound symmetry forms being the most adequate. The values of repeatability coefficients obtained for FW (0.25), FN (0.14), and FP (0.29) were considered low, indicating that the three harvests were not sufficient to select the best individuals with greater accuracy for the study population. For the variables PF and FP, estimates of accuracy around 0.50 could be obtained from five measurements, while for the variable FN more harvests would be necessary. These values indicate that in guava-segregating populations, evaluations in the first harvests are not enough to select more stable genotypes for the variables considered in this study.

The study also aims to choose the most appropriate covariance structure of the observations within the same individual by means of AIC (Akaike's Information Criterion) and SBC (Schwarz's Bayesian Criterion) criteria. A covariance structure between repeated measures could be incorporated into the statistical model, with the self-regression and compound symmetry forms being the most adequate. The values of repeatability coefficients obtained for FW (0.25), FN (0.14), and FP (0.29) were considered low, indicating that the three harvests were not sufficient to select the best individuals with greater accuracy for the study population. For the variables PF and FP, estimates of accuracy around 0.50 could be obtained from five measurements, while for the variable FN more harvests would be necessary. These values indicate that in guava-segregating populations, evaluations in the first harvests are not enough to select more stable genotypes for the variables considered in this study. | O presente estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de analisar estrutura de covariância e estimativas de repetibilidade das variáveis relacionadas à produtividade da goiabeira como massa dos frutos (MF), número de frutos (NF) e produção de frutos (PROD) de três safras, em 95 genótipos de uma população segregante. E por meio dos critérios de AIC (Akaike’s Information Criterion) e SBC (Schwarz’s Bayesian Criterion) escolher a estrutura de covariância mais adequada das observações dentro de um mesmo indivíduo. Foi possível incorporar ao modelo estatístico, uma estrutura de covariância entre medidas repetidas, sendo as formas autorregressiva e simetria composta as mais adequadas. Os valores dos coeficientes de repetibilidade obtidos para PF (0,25), NF (0,14) e PROD (0,29) foram considerados baixos, indicando que para a população em estudo as três safras realizadas não foram suficientes para selecionar os melhores indivíduos com maior acurácia. Para as variáveis PF e PROD, a partir de cinco medições seria possível a obtenção de estimativas de acurácias em torno de 0,50. Enquanto que para a variável NF, observou-se que mais safras seriam necessárias. Estes valores indicam que em populações segregantes de goiabeira, avaliações nas primeiras safras, não são suficientes para seleção de genótipos mais estáveis para as variáveis consideradas neste estudo.

The precocity of cowpea is important because it indicates the possibility of increasing and/or stabilizing production in regions with long periods of drought. The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variability and select extra-early cowpea progenies. Fifteen F3:6 progenies were evaluated in 2014 while sixty-two F7 progenies were evaluated in 2015. Two commercial cultivars were used in experiments performed in the irrigated perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, in Marco, CE. The following characteristics were evaluated: number of days for flowering (NDF), number of days for maturity (NDM), plant height (PH), pod length (PL), number of seeds per pod (NSP), number of grains per plant (NGP), weight of 100 grains (W100G) and total weight (MTOT). Data were analyzed in lattice and RBD, according to the methodology of mixed models by the REML/BLUP procedure. Also, the components of variance and genetic values were estimated. Variability among progenies, high heritability and high accuracy were identified for all traits. For NDF and NDM, the progenies presented higher behavior than the controls. The lattice arrangement contributed to a greater gain with the selection of NDF, NDM, PH, NSP, NGP and WTOT. The genotypes 12, 15, 30, 33, 41, 43 and 52 are among the top ten because they have high genetic values in three or more traits. The genotypes 12, 15, 30, 33, 43 and 52 highlight extra-earliness (precocity).

Objetivou- se avaliar a variabilidade genética e selecionar progênies de feijão-caupi extraprecoces. Foram avaliadas 15 progênies F3:6 em 2014 e 62 progênies F7 em 2015, juntamente com duas cultivares comerciais em experimentos conduzidos no perímetro irrigado Baixo Acaraú, localizado no município de Marco, CE. Foram avaliados os caracteres: número de dias para o florescimento (NDF), número de dias para a maturação (NDM), altura de planta (ALT), comprimento de vagem (CPV), número de grãos por vagem (NGV), número de grãos por planta (NGP), massa de 100 grãos (M100G) e massa total (MTOT). Os dados foram analisados em DBIL e DBC, segundo a metodologia de modelos mistos, via procedimento REML/BLUP. Foram estimados os componentes de variância e os valores genéticos. Identificou-se variabilidade entre as progênies, alta herdabilidade e elevada acurácia em todos os caracteres avaliados. As progênies apresentaram comportamento superior às testemunhas para NDF e NDM. O arranjo em látice apresentou maior eficiência que o DBC, pelo maior ganho obtido com a seleção nos caracteres NDF, NDM, ALT, NGV, NGP e MTOT. Os genótipos 12, 15, 30, 33, 41, 43 e 52 encontram-se entre os dez superiores, por apresentarem valores genéticos elevados em três ou mais caracteres. Os genótipos 12, 15, 30, 33, 43 e 52 destacam-se como os mais precoces.

The goal of this work was to evaluate the physiological responses of cowpea under water stress and rehydration in conventional and no-tillage systems. We evaluated two crop systems (conventional and no tillage) and three water conditions (no stress, moderate stress and severe stress). The following were determined: leaf area, total dry matter, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, internal CO2 concentration and leaf water potential. Water stress affected all variables evaluated, with the exception of leaf water potential. Cowpea recovered with respect to all variables after rehydration at both stress levels. Stomatal closure is an important drought tolerance mechanism, and cowpea can be considered a conservative species (i.e., one that prioritizes water status maintenance rather than photosynthetic rate). Planting systems did not affect photosynthetic rate. The tillage system promoted greater accumulation of biomass and higher leaf area.

O estresse hídrico afetou todas as variáveis avaliadas, com exceção do potencial hídrico foliar. Houve recuperação de todas as variáveis após reidratação em ambos níveis de estresse. O fechamento estomático é um importante mecanismo de tolerância à seca, sendo que o feijão-caupi pode ser considerado uma espécie conservadora, i.e. que prioriza a manutenção do status hídrico em detrimento da produção fotossintética. Os sistemas de plantio não afetaram as taxas fotossintéticas. O sistema de plantio direto promove maior acúmulo de biomassa e maior área foliar.
