The mombin tree (Spondias mombin L.) is found in almost all regions of Brazil. Fresh and processed mombin fruits are increasingly demanded by the market. The objective of this work was to evaluate the post-harvest characteristics of mombin fruits coated with cassava starch and PVC film. Fruits from the mombin cultivar Lagoa-Redonda were harvested at physiological maturity in Limoeiro do Norte, State of Ceará, transported to the Chemistry Laboratory of the Ceará Federal Institute, Limoeiro do Norte campus, and stored for 8 days at 29.7°C and 59% of relative humidity. A completely randomized experimental design in a 3x5 factorial arrangement was used, with three coating types (control, cassava starch at 3%, and cassava starch at 3% combined with PVC film) and five storage times (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 days), four replicates and five fruits per plot. The fruit skin color, external appearance, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio and weight loss were evaluated. The PVC film was effective in maintaining the fruit external appearance and decreasing weight loss. The use of cassava starch was not as efficient as the PVC film for conserving mombin fruits. The post-harvest life of fruits was 8 days for those treated with cassava starch or cassava starch combined with PVC film, and 6 days for the control.

This study aimed to evaluate the use of starch degradation index (SDI) in the diagnosis of areas of impact injuries in 'Tommy Atkins' mango, in different maturation stages. The experiment layout was a fully randomized factorial design (5 x 2), represented by five maturation stages and two handlings, with and without impact, with four replicates. SDI was determined through a subjective scale of scores indicating mango pulp darkened areas by reaction with iodine-potassium iodide solution. Subsequently, these scores were correlated with physicochemical quality variables. The results showed no influence of impact on fruit quality, in any of the studied maturation stages. Moreover, soluble solid contents increased throughout maturation stages, regardless of whether the fruits suffered impact or not. As a result, SDI is unsuitable to indicate fruit impact injury. However, there is a good correlation between SDI and pulp color, vitamin C, pH, titratable acidity, soluble solids, SS/ TA ratio and non-reducing sugars.

This work evaluated the effect of soil water availability on growth and productivity variables of cowpea in northeastern Pará, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a field of 2,100 m2 at the experimental site of the Federal Rural University of Amazon, during the driest season of the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, in a completely randomised design with two treatments (irrigated and non-irrigated), both with 12 replications in the reproductive phase (2012 and 2013). Growth and productivity data were submitted to analysis of variance with two variation factors (water regime and experimental year) at 5% probability. Student's t -test at 5% probability was used in the means of the stomatal conductance data, since this was monitored only in 2012. Final biomass production presented a reduction of 54.3% in 2012 and 26.4% in 2013 as a result of water deficit (DEF) of 76 and 26 mm, respectively. Mean stomatal conductance was reduced by 73% in the grain-filling stage as a result of the lower water availability during this period. Average cowpea productivity under water deficit reached 1,257 kg ha-1 in 2012 and 1,396 kg ha-1 in 2013. The reduction in water supply over the reproductive period significantly decreased production by 72 and 41% (F test, p < 0.05) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. An accumulated water deficit during the reproductive phase caused a maximum LAI reduction of 47% in 2012 (DEF of 76 mm) and of 13% in 2013 (DEF of 26 mm).

The objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds of organic cherry tomatoes grown under fertigation with organic dairy cattle wastewater (DCW) with different nitrogen rates. Tomato plants, grown in an agroecological farm in Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were subjected to four different nitrogen rates (T1=0, T2=50, T3=100 and T4=150% of N). The moisture, lipids, ashes, protein and total fiber contents, soluble solids (ºBrix), reducing and total sugars (%), pH and total titratable acidity (mg NaOH per 100 g) were evaluated. The total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant capacity was determined by the DPPH and FRAP methods. The different nitrogen rates (%N) affected the pH, protein and soluble solids contents. The increase in %N increased the antioxidant capacities, according to the DPPH assay, and TPC. On the other hand, the tomatoes under fertigation with the highest %N presented lower antioxidant capacities according to the FRAP assay. The fertigation did not affect the microbiological characteristics of the tomatoes, which presented fecal coliforms count <3 NMP g-1 and absence of Salmonella in 25 g.

RESUMO Alterações no espaçamento de semeadura podem gerar modificações no comportamento da cultura, das plantas daninhas e nas relações de competição entre ambas. Um experimento foi desenvolvido para determinar os períodos de convivência e controle das plantas daninhas no algodoeiro, semeado em espaçamento de 0,76 m entre linhas. A semeadura do cultivar FM 993 foi realizada no dia 08/01/2010 buscando-se atingir uma densidade de 190 mil sementes ha-1. Para determinar os períodos de convivência, período anterior a interferência (PAI), período total de prevenção da interferência (PTPI) e período crítico de prevenção à interferência (PCPI), foram analisados os períodos de 0; 5; 10; 15; 22; 29; 36; 43; 50; 57; 64; 71 e 190 dias de convivência ou de controle inicial das plantas daninhas. As plantas daninhas de maior importância relativa foram Amaranthus retroflexus, Bidens pilosa, Eleusine indica, Digitaria horizontalis, Alternanthera tenella e Commelina benghalensis. Admitindo-se a perda máxima de 5% em relação a produtividade, o PAI foi de 11 dias após a emergência após a emergência (DAE), o PTPI foi de 46 DAE e o PCPI de 35 dias, entre 11 e 46 DAE. A tolerância equivalente ao desvio padrão da média do tratamento no limpo resultou no PAI de 6 DAE, PTPI de 55 DAE e PCPI com duração de 49 dias, entre 6 e 55 DAE. | ABSTRACT Changes in row spacing may result in changes in crop and weed behavior and crop-weed competition. A study was performed to determine the periods of weed presence and weed control in cotton sown with 0.76 m spacing between planting rows. Cotton cultivar FM 993 was sown on 01/08/2010 with the aim of reaching a density of 190,000 seeds ha-1. Treatments with either weed presence or weed control during the first 0, 5, 10, 15, 22, 29, 36, 43, 50, 57, 64, 71, and 190 days of cultivation were established to determine the period prior to weed interference (PPI), total period of interference prevention (TPIP) and critical period of weed control (CPWC). The weed species with high relative importance were Amaranthus retroflexus, Bidens pilosa, Eleusine indica, Digitaria horizontalis, Alternanthera tenella, and Commelina benghalensis. Considering a maximum yield loss of 5%, the PPI was established 11 days after cotton emergence (DAE), the TPWC at 46 DAE, and the CPWC between 11 and 46 DAE, for a total duration of 35 days. Considering a maximum acceptable yield loss equal to the standard deviation for the weed-free treatment, the PPI was established at 6 DAE, the TPWC at 55 DAE, and the CPWC between 6 and 55 DAE for a total duration of 49 days

ABSTRACT The permanence of sugarcane straw on the soil surface, in systems without the pre-harvest straw burning practice, directly affects the soil organic matter dynamics. The objective of this work was to evaluate the changes in total organic carbon (TOC), carbon in the light organic matter (CLOM) and particulate organic carbon (POC), and their carbon stocks in a typic Quartzipsamment cultivated for nine years with sugarcane crops, which were conducted without the pre-harvest straw burning practice, in Paraipaba, State of Ceará, Brazil. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected at depths of 0.0-0.025, 0.025-0.05, 0.05-0.10, 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m, in the sugarcane crop area and in an adjacent native forest area, in order to quantify the TOC, CLOM and POC, as well as the carbon stocks accumulated in the layer 0.0-0.30 m related to these fractions (TOCSt, CLOMSt and POCSt). TOC content changes after nine years of sugarcane crops, conducted without pre-harvest straw burning, were found only in the layers 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m. The CLOM varied only in the layer 0.025-0.05 m. The POC content changes were more noticeable than the changes in TOC and CMOL. The CLOM of the sugarcane crop area presented high similarity with TOC, which may affect their quantification in studies related to the soil organic matter dynamics. The sugarcane crop increased the TOCSt, POCSt and CLOMSt in the layer 0.0-0.30 m, compared with the adjacent native forest area. | RESUMO A permanência da palhada da cana-de-açúcar sobre a superfície do solo no sistema sem queima do canavial tem influência direta na dinâmica da matéria orgânica desses solos. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar as mudanças ocorridas nos conteúdos de carbono orgânico total (COT), carbono da matéria orgânica leve (CMOL) e carbono orgânico particulado (COP) e em seus respectivos estoques de carbono em um Neossolo Quartzarênico após nove anos de cultivo com cana-de-açúcar sem queima prévia do canavial em Paraipaba-CE. Foram coletadas amostras de solo deformado e indeformado nas profundidades de 0,0 - 0,025; 0,025 - 0,05; 0,05 - 0,10; 0,10 - 0,20 e 0,20 - 0,30 m em uma área sob cultivo de cana-de-açúcar e em uma área de mata nativa adjacente, quantificando-se os teores de COT, CMOL e COP, assim como os valores de estoques de carbono acumulados na camada de 0 - 0,30 m associados a essas frações: EstCOT, EstCMOL e EstCOP. Mudanças no conteúdo de COT após nove anos de cultivo de cana-de-açúcar sem queima foi observado apenas nas camadas de 0,10 - 0,20 e 0,20 - 0,30 m. Já o CMOL apresentou variação apenas para a camada de 0,025 - 0,05 m. As mudanças ocorridas no conteúdo de COP foram mais perceptíveis do que no conteúdo de COT e CMOL. O CMOL na área de cana apresentou uma elevada similaridade com o COT, o que pode tornar inviável sua quantificação em estudos para inferir sobre a dinâmica da matéria orgânica em solos. O cultivo de cana-de-açúcar aumentou o EstCOT, o EstCOP e o EstCMOL na camada de 0 - 0,30 m em comparação a área de mata nativa adjacente.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and yield of cowpea grains in different intercropping systems with millet, in wet and dry seasons. The experiments were performed in the experimental field of the Department of Plant Science of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using a randomized block design with three replications and five treatments: T1- sole crop of millet; T2- sole crop of cowpea; T3- intercrop of millet (1 row) and cowpea (1 row) with 0.5 m between rows (1Mx1C-0.50); T4 - intercrop of millet (1 row) and cowpea (1 row) with 0.75 m between rows (1Mx1C-0.75); and T5 - intercrop of millet (1 row) and cowpea (2 rows) with 0.5 m between rows (1Mx2C-0.50). The cowpea shoot dry weight, root dry weight, number and dry weight of nodules, grain yield and 1000-grain weight, and the millet fresh weight, shoot dry weight, grain yield and 1000-grain weight were evaluated. The land-use efficiency index (LUE) showed significant differences in yield between the sole crop of cowpea and the intercropping system, with greater grain weight in the intercrop 1Mx2C-0.50. On the other hand, the intercrop 1Mx1C-0.75 was not recommended for the study conditions. | RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento e a produtividade de grãos do feijão-caupi nos diferentes sistemas de consórcio com o milheto, na época das águas e da seca. Os experimentos foram conduzidos no campo experimental do Departamento de Fitotecnia, da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e cinco tratamentos: T1- cultura solteira de milheto; T2- cultura solteira de feijão-caupi; T3- consórcio com uma linha de milheto e uma de feijão-caupi espaçadas de 0,5m (1M x 1C-0,50); T4- consórcio com uma linha de milheto e uma de feijão-caupi espaçadas de 0,75m (1M x 1C-0,75); e T5- consórcio com uma linha de milheto e duas de feijão-caupi espaçadas de 0,5m (1M x 2C-0,50). No feijão-caupi, avaliou-se a massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca de raiz, o número e massa seca de nódulos, a produtividade de grãos e a massa de 1000 grãos; enquanto no milheto, avaliou-se a massa verde, a massa seca da parte aérea, a produtividade de grãos e a massa de 1000 grãos. Pela comparação do índice de equivalência de área (IEA), se verificou diferenças significativas na produção de feijão-caupi por área explorada, no sistema consorciado em relação ao cultivo solteiro, com a maior massa de grãos no consórcio 1M x 2C-0,50, em relação aos outros. Por outro lado, o consórcio 1M x 1C-0,75 não é recomendável para o local.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the foam-mat drying kinetics of mango pulp (cv. Keitt) adding 1% Emustab® and 1% Super Liga Neutra®, for a whipping time of 20 minutes, dried in a forced -air convection oven at different temperatures (50, 60 and 70oC) and foam layer thicknesses (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 cm). Drying kinetic data were used to build drying curves and then fit to Page, Henderson, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic and two-term Exponential models. Both temperature and foam layer thickness influenced drying time, which reached the shortest value at the highest temperature and smallest thickness. The Page model provided the best fit to the experimental drying curve data. | RESUMO Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a cinética de secagem em camada de espuma da polpa de manga cv. Keitt, com a incorporação de 1% de Emustab® e 1% de Super Liga Neutra®, para um tempo de batimento de 20 min, desidratada em estufa com circulação forçada de ar em diferentes temperaturas (50; 60 e 70 oC) e espessuras de camada de espuma (0,5; 1,0 e 1,5 cm). A partir dos dados obtidos durante a cinética de secagem foram construídas as curvas de secagem e ajustados os modelos de Page, Henderson, Henderson e Pabis, Logarítmico e Exponencial de dois termos. Verificou-se que a temperatura de secagem e a espessura da camada de espuma influenciaram no tempo de secagem, com os menores tempos de secagem observados na maior temperatura e na menor espessura. O modelo de Page foi o que melhor se ajustou aos dados experimentais das curvas de secagem.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the performance, carcass yield and intestinal morphometry of 1- to 21-day-old broiler chickens fed a diet containing increasing levels of sunflower cake, supplemented with or without an enzyme complex (EC). We used 1200 Cobb 500 birds, which were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2x5 factorial scheme and five levels of sunflower cake inclusion (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%) in diets supplemented or not with EC. Each treatment consisted of 5 replicates. Animals were fed the experimental diets from 1 to 21 days of age and from 22 to 42 days all birds received the same feed based on corn and soybean meal. There was no interaction between the level of sunflower cake inclusion and presence of EC. From 1 to 21 days of age, the weight gain, final weight, and feed intake linearly decreased (P<0.05) with increasing sunflower cake inclusion level. At 42 days old, after animals consumed diets based on corn and soybean meal (from 22 to 42 days), the levels provided least 21 days did not influence the performance results. Animals receiving the EC in the first phase showed better results at the end of the experiment (P<0.05). Up to 21 days old, carcass yield decreased, and abdominal fat increased with the sunflower cake inclusion. The addition of EC in the diet improved the thigh, breast and carcass yield. Intestinal morphology after 21 days revealed that the three segments of the intestine had at least one type of change, such as a decrease in villus height and increase in crypt depth, with increased level of sunflower cake in the diet, affecting performance. | RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho, rendimento de carcaça e morfometria intestinal de frangos de corte alimentados com níveis crescentes de torta de girassol de 1 a 21 dias de idade recebendo ou não complexo multienzimático. Foram utilizadas 1200 aves da linhagem Cobb 500, as quais foram distribuídas em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 2x5, e cinco níveis de inclusão de torta (0, 5, 10, 15, e 20%)às dietas, suplementando ou não com complexo multienzimático (CE). Cada tratamento foi composto por cinco repetições.Os animais foram alimentados com as rações experimentais no período de 1 a 21 dias de idade e de 22 a 42 dias de idade todas as aves receberam a mesma ração a base de milho e farelo de soja. Não houve interação entre o nível de inclusão da torta de girassol e uso do CE. O ganho de peso, o peso final e o consumo de ração apresentaram decréscimos lineares (P<0,05) conforme o aumento dos níveis de inclusão da torta no período de 1 a 21 dias de idade. Aos 42 dias de idade, após o consumo de dietas a base de milho e farelo de soja por todos os animais, no período de 22 a 42 dias, os níveis fornecidos até 21 dias não influenciaram nos resultados de desempenho. Os animais que receberam enzimas na primeira fase apresentaram melhores resultados ao final do experimento (P<0,05). O rendimento de carcaça decresceu, e a gordura abdominal aumentou conforme a inclusão da torta até 21 dias de idade. A adição do CE na dieta melhorou o rendimento de coxa, peito e carcaça. Na morfologia intestinal aos 21 dias, os 3 segmentos do intestino apresentaram ao menos um tipo de alteração, como diminuição na altura de vilos e aumento na profundidade de cripta, conforme o aumento do nível de inclusão da torta de girassol na dieta, afetando o desempenho.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de gesso e vinhaça na produção de matéria seca, nutrição e atributos químicos do solo cultivado com alfafa. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 3 × 5, com três doses de vinhaça, 0, 150 e 300 m3 ha-1 e cinco doses de gesso agrícola (0, 3, 6, 9 e 12 Mg ha-1). Foram avaliados a composição química e matéria seca da parte aérea (MSPA) e os atributos químicos do solo (0-0,2 e 0,21-0,4 m). As doses de vinhaça aumentaram os teores de potássio, enquanto as doses de gesso promoveram acréscimos lineares nos teores de cálcio e enxofre no solo. A saturação de bases foi crescente e o magnésio teve efeito quadrático na camada de 0,21-0,4 m em função das doses de gesso. Os teores de cálcio, magnésio e fósforo na folha da alfafa foram menores com a aplicação de vinhaça. As doses de gesso promoveram acréscimos lineares na MSPA da alfafa. A dose de 150 m3 ha-1 já foi suficiente para aumentar a MSPA. Os teores de cálcio e magnésio na folha tiveram ajuste quadrático, com máximo acúmulo de cálcio em 9,5 Mg ha-1 e o magnésio com ponto de mínimo na dose de 8,7 Mg ha-1 de gesso. Os teores foliares de enxofre sob doses de vinhaça e os de potássio na maior dose obtiveram máximo acumulo na presença de 9 Mg ha-1 de gesso. | ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the application of phosphogypsum and vinasse on soil chemical properties and productivity and nutritional characteristics of alfalfa (Medicago sativa). The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, using a 3×5 factorial arrangement, with three vinasse rates (0, 150 and 300 m3 ha-1) and five phosphogypsum rates (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 Mg ha-1). The alfalfa chemical composition and shoot dry matter (SDW) and soil chemical properties (in the layers 0.0-0.2 and 0.21-0.4 m) were evaluated. The vinasse rates increased the soil potassium contents, while the phosphogypsum rates promoted linear increases in soil calcium and sulfur contents. The base saturation was increased and the magnesium content showed a quadratic response on the layer 0.21-0.4 m with the increase in phosphogypsum rates. The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus contents in the alfalfa leaves were lower with vinasse application. The phosphogypsum rates promoted linear increases in alfalfa SDW. Vinasse rated 150 m3 ha-1 was been enough to SDW increase. Calcium and magnesium contents in the leaves fitted a quadratic model, with maximum calcium content in the phosphogypsum rate of 9.5 Mg ha-1 and the minimum magnesium content in the phosphogypsum rate of 8.7 Mg ha-1. The leaf sulfur contents in all vinasse rates and leaf potassium contents in the highest vinasse rate showed maximum accumulation at near 9 Mg ha-1 of phosphogypsum.
