Degradation of Residual Herbicide Atrazine in Agri-Food and Washing Water Texto completo

Atrazine, an herbicide used to control grassy and broadleaf weed, has become an essential part of agricultural crop protection tools. It is widely sprayed on corn, sorghum and sugar cane, with the attendant problems of its residues in agri-food and washing water. If ingested into humans, this residual atrazine can cause reproductive harm, developmental toxicity and carcinogenicity. It is therefore important to find clean and economical degradation processes for atrazine. In recent years, many physical, chemical and biological methods have been proposed to remove atrazine from the aquatic environment. This review introduces the research works of atrazine degradation in aqueous solutions by method classification. These methods are then compared by their advantages, disadvantages, and different degradation pathways of atrazine. Moreover, the existing toxicological experimental data for atrazine and its metabolites are summarized. Finally, the review concludes with directions for future research and major challenges to be addressed.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that can cause morbidity and mortality in humans, domestic animals, and terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. The environmentally robust oocyst stage of T. gondii is fundamentally critical to the parasite's success, both in terms of its worldwide distribution as well as the extensive range of infected intermediate hosts. Despite the limited definitive host species (domestic and wild felids), infections have been reported on every continent, and in terrestrial as well as aquatic environments. The remarkable resistance of the oocyst wall enables dissemination of T. gondii through watersheds and ecosystems, and long-term persistence in diverse foods such as shellfish and fresh produce. Here, we review the key attributes of oocyst biophysical properties that confer their ability to disseminate and survive in the environment, as well as the epidemiological dynamics of oocyst sources including domestic and wild felids. This manuscript further provides a comprehensive review of the pathways by which T. gondii oocysts can infect animals and people through the environment, including in contaminated foods, water or soil. We conclude by identifying critical control points for reducing risk of exposure to oocysts as well as opportunities for future synergies and new directions for research aimed at reducing the burden of oocyst-borne toxoplasmosis in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife.

Chlorinated flame retardants, particularly dechlorane plus (DP), were widely used in commercial applications and are ubiquitous in the environment. A total of seven species of aquatic organisms were collected concurrently from the region of a chemical production facility in Huai’an, China. DP and structurally related compounds including mirex, dechloranes 602, 603, 604, chlordene plus (CP), DP monoadduct (DPMA), and two dechlorinated breakdown products of DP, decachloropentacyclooctadecadiene (anti-Cl10-DP) and undecachloropentacyclooctadecadiene (anti-Cl11-DP), were detected in these aquatic organisms. Nitrogen stable isotope ratios were also measured to determine the trophic levels of the organisms. Trophic magnification factors (TMFs) for these chemicals were calculated with values ranging from 1.0 to 3.1. TMFs for CP, mirex, anti-DP, and ∑DP were statistically greater than 1, showing evidence of biomagnification in the food web. Concentration ratios of anti-Cl11-DP to anti-DP showed a significant relationship with trophic level, implying that anti-Cl11-DP had a higher food-web magnification potential than its precursor. The biota-sediment accumulation factors and TMFs for DP demonstrated stereoselectivity, with syn-DP having a greater bioaccumulation potential than anti-DP in the aquatic environment.

Global aquatic ecosystems are essential to human existence and have deteriorated seriously in recent years. Understanding the influence mechanism of habitat variation on the structure of the food-web allows the effective recovery of the health of degraded ecosystems. Whereas most previous studies focused on the selection of driving habitat factors, the impact of habitat variation on the food-web structure was rarely studied, resulting in the low success rate of ecosystem restoration projects globally. This paper presents a framework for exploring the effects of spatial variations in water quality and hydrological habitat factors on the food-web structure in city waters. Indices for the evaluation of the food-web structure are first determined by integrating model-parameter extraction via literature refinement. The key water quality and hydrological factors are then determined by coupling canonical correspondence analysis with partial least squares regression. Their spatial variation is investigated using spatial autocorrelation. Finally, fuzzy clustering is applied to analyze the influence of the spatial variations in water quality and hydrological factors on the food-web structure. The results obtained in Ji'nan, the pilot city of water ecological civilization in China, show that the Shannon diversity index, connectance index, omnivory index, and the ratio of total primary production to the total respiration are important indicators of food-web structural change. They show that the driving factors affecting the aquatic food-web structure in Ji'nan are hydrological factors (e.g., river width, water depth, and stream flow), physical aspects of water quality (e.g., air temperature, water temperature, electrical conductivity, and transparency), and chemical aspects (e.g., potassium, dissolved oxygen, calcium, and total hardness). They also show that the stability of the food-web is more prone to spatial variations in water quality than in hydrological factors. Higher electrical conductivity, potassium, total hardness, and air temperature lead to deteriorated food-web structures, whereas better transparency improves structure and stability. We found that water and air temperature are the most important factors in the spatial variation of the food-web structure in the study area, followed by total hardness. Transparency is the least important factor. Large disparities and varied spatial distributions exist in the driving effects of water quality and hydrological factors across regions attributable to differences in geographical environments, water salinity (fresh vs. sea water), and environmental factors (e.g., water pollution). The above methods and results serve as a theoretical and scientific basis for a high success rate of aquatic ecosystem restoration projects in the study area and other cities worldwide.

The Milky stork is listed as an endangered species endemic to the Southeast Asia region. In Malaysia, the population is currently being reintroduced back into the wild. However, the increase of anthropogenic activity throughout the coastal area might expose the population to hazardous chemicals such as heavy metals. This study highlights the contamination of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in the Milky stork’s diet. Additionally, this is the first time an integrated exposure model being used to assess heavy metal exposure risk to the population. Lead level (5.5–7.98mgkg⁻¹) in particular was relatively high compared to Cd (0.08–0.33mgkg⁻¹). This was probably related to the different niches occupied by the species in the aquatic environment. The results further show that the predicted exposure doses (through intake of both food and water) for all metals are much lower than the Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) values. The total exposure dose for Cd was 0.11mgkg⁻¹d⁻¹ with TDI value of 0.54mgkg⁻¹d⁻¹ while Pb total exposure dose was 0.31mgkg⁻¹d⁻¹ with TDI value of 0.64mgkg⁻¹d⁻¹. Several possible factors that could lead to the observed pattern were discussed. In conclusion, there is an urgent need to improve the current habitat quality to protect the endangered species. The authors also emphasized on the protection of remaining Milky stork’s habitats i.e. mudflats and mangroves and the creation of buffer zone to mitigate the negative impacts that may arise from pollution activity.

RESUMEN: La industria alimentaria es uno de los sectores más contaminantes a nivel del agua, sus cargas orgánicas generan consecuencias como la contaminación y eutrofización del medio acuático, afectando así los ecosistemas. Debido a ello, las industrias han adoptado planes para el uso eficiente del agua, conceptos de economía circular y estrategias de producción limpia, que han ayudado a disminuir la huella hídrica de dicho sector. En el presente estado del arte se explora la información referente al tema, en el cual se encontró que la gestión del recurso hídrico tiene como común denominador, estrategias como la estructuración de una adecuada área de gestión ambiental, la caracterización de los vertimientos, los principios de producción más limpia como reducción de pérdidas, reuso, recirculación del agua y el tratamiento final, la educación ambiental, capacitaciones al personal, planes de mejora continua, mantenimiento preventivo, cambio de tecnologías obsoletas, principios de economía circular, instalación de trampas de grasa, tecnologías limpias, plantas de tratamientos de aguas residuales, dispositivos ahorradores, hasta extenderse más allá e incluir entre sus metas, planes para comunidades, proyectos sociales y de innovación y desarrollo, protección de cuencas, humedales y agua en general. Así las empresas podrán adoptar medidas que les permitan alcanzar los objetivos y metas enmarcados en el desarrollo sostenible y fortalecer su área ambiental, reducir costos, ayudar al medio ambiente y ser más competitivas a nivel empresarial. | Pregrado | Ingeniera Ambiental

This study investigated the feasibility of using an invasive snail, Pomacea canaliculata, as a food source and water purifier for the commercial breeding of the loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. The predatory potential of M. anguillicaudatus (3.5–5.5 g) against hatchling snails was evaluated in aquaria and simulated paddy fields. Some hatchling snails left the water to avoid being preyed upon by the loaches, and approximately 10 hatchlings died per day in the presence of five loaches in aquaria, whereas a weaker snail control effect was observed in the simulated paddy fields. The growth of rice seedlings (Oryza sativa) was not reduced by the presence of hatchling snails alone, but the shoot biomass of seedlings coexisting with snails was promoted after introducing the loaches. Additionally, the presence of P. canaliculata adults improved the aquatic environment in the short term for loach breeding by decreasing the turbidity of the water. Importantly, M. anguillicaudatus (12–18 g) mortality decreased and its weight increased in the presence of adult snails.
